I'm a casual bike rider, but wanted to know more about the components on my bike to watch for deficiencies. This gal knows her stuff. She was excellent--very clear, precise and understandable. Thank you for this video

I've been working on bikes since I was old enough to use a wrench. This is an awesome video. It has just enough detail that the average rider needs to know, and nothing more. Great work!

These are all the details a rider should know about their bike. Beautifully explained. As a Mechanic in progress, I can say that every aspect described in this video is absolutely critical about owning and riding a bike. Thinking about using this material to teach some local riders.

Semi-pro tip: When you remove the tube, don't remove yet or move the tire around the rim. Figure out on the tube where the puncture occurred, then bring the tube back to the wheel, line up the valve stem with the valve hole in the rim: you can now narrow down the area to search for the cause of the puncture to wherever the location of the puncture on the tube lines up to on the tire.
Note that unless you tracked the orientation of the tube , there are _two_ candidate locations on either side of the valve, when you flipflop the tube over.

@@rei This video reminded me I need to buy a new bike. I've been on the REI website. Hoping I can find an electric cargo bike capable of moving 200kg uphill! (Including the rider.) I've realized maintenance isn't magic, so I'd be confident spending a lot on a bike. Before, I didn't want to take the risk of trashing it while out on a ride, and the situation being hopeless. But if I can do basic repairs myself, that changes things.

I'm the opposite, like Kat, i always shift to the smallest cog (OK, "when i remember" :-) It shouldn't make it harder, on the contrary,: a) that's where you have the most slack on the chain, so you can move the derailleur out of the way easier when removing or replacing the wheel, b) when putting the wheel back on, you know where to located the chain, it lines up nicely and doesn't get in the way.

I am posing the following question to any bike experts who know a lot about hydraulic brakes. This question concerns a recent real life situation. What do you think of a bike manufacturer who sends a customer a $1400 bike with DOT4 oil in both hydraulic brake reservoirs that were clearly labeled "MINERAL OIL"? The customer wondered why ALL his brake fluid leaked out at around 970 miles.
