That Everton side in mid 80's were formidable, and, had they been able to play in European Cup, I'm convinced they would have won it (or come very close).
Lineker said in interview a couple of years ago that Everton side were easily best club side he played in during his career.

In the 1966 World Cup Brazil was based in Liverpool, at Everton's training ground. All their games were played at Goodison Park. Brazil were so impressed at Everton's training facilities they took measurements and photographs copying the facilities. 1966 was before the Internet and world-wide TV.
Only once every four years on TV did people ever see the magic of the Brazilians, who played football like they were from a different planet. The Brazilians inspired Everton with the Holy Trinity of the Ball, Harvey and Kendall midfield. Everton did not play kick and rush or long ball. They played a type of football most people today would be more familiar with. Everton took English football to another level. A greatly underappreciated team.

So basicly the Haysel disaster killed any chance of Everton really show what they were capable of on the European stage. The punishment for the English club was far too harsh IMO and all suffered from that just because some hooligans couldn't contain themselves. Sure, hooliganism was worrying back then and this incident proved the catalyst. Even though I'm Liverpool sympathiser I think the punishment on all English teams especially for Kendall's Everton was bit unfair. Imagine if the ban was more leninent - would Steaua, Porto or PSV win the ECC then? Surely Everton would have won it once.

When asked why he left Everton after one season, Gary Liniker replied , because Barcelona we're interested ... English teams were banned from Europe and I wouldn't have left if it was any other club ........ That kind of gives an idea of the standing we had then.

Everton would have beaten Steaua without a doubt if they had reached the final. Probably would have beaten Barcelona as well. What a team they had in the mid 80’s.

I remember meeting him once at the Hall Of Fame dinner in Liverpool. He's had a wee bit to drink - obviously lol - and he got to telling stories. One in particular about how he was told to get Paul Rideout (he had no idea who he was at the time). After buying him, he realised he was brilliant. Afterwards, he was asked why he bought him:
"You told me to get him!", he replied.
"No, I didn't say get RIDEOUT, I said get DRIED OUT!!"

I'm surprised you made no mention of the real turning point of the 83/84 season: in early 84, they were losing 1-0 at Oxford in Milk Cup with a few minutes remaining, looking dead and buried, then one misplaced back pass enabled Heath to equalise, they then won replay.
It's possible that Kendall might have left had they lost that game, it was only a few weeks after that dire 0-0 draw v Coventry.

    • @31cify
      @31cify 7 років тому +35

Well, you have to understand that Liverpool fans, not the Club, the fans, are disliked by most in Britain.
Evertonians don't hate Liverpool because of what they've achieved and what Everton haven't, they're not those types of people. Liverpool are disliked because of their attitude, the majority of them are not very nice fans to put it as subtle as possible. Very few of them ever show any admiration for any other Club or their achievements, all they see is the colour red and their bombastic hatred of any Club who stands in their way.

Bit late to try & answer, but here goes.. starting with the spine of the side that won the League in 85 it was:
Neville Southall - World Class Keeper plucked from the lower leagues.
Kevin Ratcliffe - Everton Youth, class on the ball, good distribution, leader, Master of some of the Dark Arts of Defending, pace to burn.
Peter Reid - Journeyman Professional, midfield enforcer, did whet he did better than anybody else. Never properly replaced.
Andy Gray - Another Journeyman, had hit greater heights than Reid. Seasoned goalscorer, made things happen in the box. Enjoyed terrorizing defenders.
With a spine like that, Everton could dominate teams, and the more artistic players could do their stuff. It was assembled for not very much money.
Don't know loads about tactics, but a lot of our transition came through Gary Stevens [another youth product], a real class act both in attack and defence.
Finally, everything Kendall touched from 1984 turned to Gold, and that side threw the title away in 86 before winning at a canter in 87. Honorable mentions for the signings of Paul Bracewell, Psycho Pat, Trevor Steven, Graeme Sharp and Kevin Sheedy, our very own Messi, who could also put a foot in.
The decline of the club was down to Heysel, Kendall's departure, Colin Harvey's failures, and I would say, the drastically declining health of John Moores.
