Lots of football clubs live in the past, concentrating on former glories rather than the bleak hinterland of an uncertain present. Perhaps the club that does this the most is Nottingham Forest, who 37 years ago became European champions for the second time in successive years. Now, after multiple relegations, they face a bleak immediate future, supporters disenfranchised by mismanagement and broken promises. So how did it come to this? This video, written by Nick Miller and produced by Joe Devine, seeks to explain that.

Do you think they will get back to the Premier League in the next five years?
uMAXit Football yes , but they will get relegate again
No, they won't....Brentford will get promoted before they do
Why not ?
While it is currently hard to imagine given the dysfunction, 5 years is such a long time in football. Just look at Burton Albion from non-league to the Championship in 7 years. Speaking of, a video on them would be brilliant.
uMAXit Football Leeds United..
A sad story, but a great history. They donated their shirts when Arsenal was first founded in order to help us start up and are the reason why Arsenal wear the colour red.
Agree, always had a lot of time and respect for Forest...and that's coming from a guy who lived in Leicester for six years, and used to watch The Foxes from the chicken run side of Filbert Street! :-D
Trafalgar Quite funny that, Notts County did the same for Juventus.
Trafalgar They're also why my club, Independiente, wear red too, as roughly a year after foundation a board member saw them play and was amazed with their kits. Really hope they're back someday.
Kitsonator1 yes we did, Hench why we have a close connection with Juve and there fans.
And then they've just beaten Arsenal 4-2. How un4-2nate for Arsenal. Let's hope they get to the Prem soon
"If a chairman sacks the manager he initially appointed, he should go as well." - Brian Clough
Honestly what a manager....your own eyes don't lie but he needed Taylor as a balance
Andy Reid was some player
Here after Nottingham Forest Just got promoted 2022!!!
It's incredible to think that they are now one win away from a return to the Premier League. Tifo, if you still check the comments five years on, I'd love to get an update on Forest in the event they beat Huddersfield.
TIFO We need an update.
We defo need an update!
We're back
This is one of the clubs I wish were playing in the premier league along with leeds.
Very true
Ironsinthesoul - I was only wishing the best for those clubs cause they'll get a financial boost when they play in the PL and there is a chance however small that they may compete for the league title which in turn will increase their fan base across the globe. The reason I mentioned those two clubs was because of the way they just dropped off from the PL and it was kind of sad. Also you you can't compare the happiness of Arsenal's fans to that of a lower league clubs because the expectations are different when you compete at the top and in turn comes disappointment with not being able to the CL. So when you said that clubs are more happy playing in the championship or likewise you seem innately out of depth.
+Ironsinthesoul - Let's get something straight here first, I never questioned the loyalty of the fans. Not of Leeds heck not even of those Mancunians. What I said and what I'll always say is that it would be better for clubs to compete in the PL/Top division of any league as opposed to the bottom tiers. Just because I mentioned Leeds and Forest doesn't mean my field of vision is only focused on them only. Also I was being sympathetic and not patronizing one bit. I don't want to get into the tribal aspect of the "fandom" cause I'm just voicing my opinion and I love the game tooooo much for that I love to see every team doing well (Well almost every) .
add Aston Villa to that short list and I would agree with you 100%
I invite you to my channel to watch a small translated by me video about the statements of the New Greek Owner of NOTTINGHAM FOREST Vangelis Marinakis. It is is very interesting i also live to the same city...
What he said at the ends is true, all we want is a club to be proud of, I'm still proud anyway
your avatar looks like the silver Forest badge Panini sticker I had in my 1985 album
Alfie Stanko a proud club in league 1
Red till i die dude....yoooouuu rreeeddss
Alfie Stanko we are finally proud
Adam Dunn there not even in league 1 you melt😂
I am utterly ashamed of the way Doughty was treated towards the end of his tenure, and heartbroken that he died having not achieved what he set out to do. The truth is, we were spoiled having him as owner - a fact emphatically underlined by Al Hasawi's incompetence. RIP Nigel, thank you for saving our club from oblivion.
You almost wonder what England might've won had Brian Clough managed them!
Upender Gowda or if he was to manage Liverpool he probably would have won the European cup every year such a great manager
Upender Gowda they asked him to be the England manager but he turned it down...
Angus Mayo He didn't turn it down. He stated that "Football is my dream and my dream in football is to manage England", the English FA however disliked his constant focus on himself and instead selected other candidates for the role.
The main thing, I think it would have needed to be Clough AND Taylor,. It was that partnership that was special.
Angus Mayo wrong
being a young forest fan is very painful knowing how good our history is, and how awful our future is looking
The most relatable thing I've read in a long time ^
TWalsh2109 so true
TWalsh2109 it's looking good for this season. We've brought in some talent and I'll like to see how they'll get on
we all know how that feels
Shay Forrester 😂 And we about to sack another manager
An update video for this now that they are back in the top league would be great!!
Brian Clough was a football genius.
Great character. Nice to see the main road between Derby and Nottingham named after him.
I study the the uni of Nottingham and my first year just ended and seeing forest being promoted and being in the city throughout the year has been so amazing. WE ARE PREMIER LEAGUE
And now forest are 2nd in the championship with some brilliant players, a brilliant owner and a upgraded stadium on the way with the premier league in touching distance... what a story!
Nivada Stars still top mate
It’s looking good so far, need to keep this run up!
Better luck next season.
And how did that turn out for you?
@@frankmachin5438 pretty well now eh
Very sad. I saw that European cup winning side in 1980. A very good team.
It’s Saturday the 28th of September 2019 & Nottingham Forest are currently top of the championship, selling out at home & away every single week & rebuilding the main stand to take the capacity of the city ground from 29,000 to 38,000 the sleeping giant is awakening at long last.
Martyn Scotton Rebuilding main stand? The whole ground is being refurbished and modernised
Indeed it is
So true
Up the reds ❤️❤️
Josh Butlin up those sexy reds 👍🏻
As an Arsenal fan, I admire Forest. They’ve got a brilliant history and have twice won something that my team has never won (and probably won’t win at least not for a long time), the European Cup. I hope they can turn it around and get back to the Premiership
You should do a video on Liverpools fall from grace after 1990 and why they have yet to win the premier league
Because they never had a team that was good enough to win the league. Istanbul, 2005 was just a fluke TBH!
Dexter Morgan Istanbul was purely down to Gerrard, I'm a Chelsea fan and will always rate lampard above Stevie G but on that day he carried them over the line there's no doubt
Lamont Coleman I agree but coming back from 3-0 down at half time against Milan and winning the whole thing on penalties?? You can't deny they did have lady luck on their side. I mean they did lose to Milan two years later...
Not completely true. Although most of liverpools squads since the 90s have been horribly average, and mostly carried by 1-2 players each season, the 08/09 squad was arguably the best team to never win the leauge. Not only was it filled with great players, but the team was incredibly well balanced, and had a champions league winning manager as well.
RandomGuitarGuy Yeah but Man United 08/09 squad was just out of this world! Probably the best in the world ATM after Barcelona!
Huge club with massive history. Deserve to be in the PL with Leeds, Newcastle, Villa, Sheff Wed etc
Just because they were great team in the past doesn't automatically mean that they deserve PL spot in the present. Only with good ownership, management and on pitch play they could gain promotion. But it's naive to think that they deserve top flight spot for historical reasons. Look at Leeds and Villa - bad ownership and poor on-field play got them where they are now. Today there are new heroes of the Premier League and sure the Big 6 (Man United, Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Spurs) would probobly hold their grasp on the top, but now teams like Stoke, Southampton or even Burnley (they have one of the best home stats in the league now) could cause some upset.
Rav Wilding I miss Leeds United so much
They aren't a huge club, never have been. In fact, to pretend they are or were actually diminishes the sheer scale of Brian Clough's achievement. What's happened in the past 20 years is Forest returning to their natural level.
No, son. You aren't a big club. Neither are we. That's why Clough's achievements, long before you were born, and Ranieri's achievements last season are so broadly admired. Here we have two, three if you count Derby, yo yo teams from three fairly small East Midlands cities doing what ought to have been impossible and beating the genuinely big clubs to silverware. Right now, Leicester are the biggest and best East Midlands club just as Forest were thirty odd years ago and Derby were before that. It'll probably fluctuate again. But don't for a second think you're an English giant with a divine right to return to greatness.
But they’re not a huge club, that’s the point. Fantastic history, but they don’t have the fan base like a Leeds or Wednesday as you named have. Clough himself talked about how amazing it was to get such a small club to reach such a high. Great history but not a huge club. If they were they would have the money to at least have mediocre success.
Not a Forest or Derby fan but as a neutral Brian Clough and Peter Taylor's achievements at both clubs are astounding.
we're back.
Who's reading this after the Huddersfield game! Welcome back Nottingham forest!
absolutely loving this channel. You are teaching us a lot. Good job, we hope u keep it up
I have a dream that one day we will see Leeds United and Nottingham Forest back in the Premiership, not just saving themselves from relegation, but also competing for the Top Four position with the two Manchester clubs, Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs and Arsenal. :)
Now look ❤️🙏😊
Me too
And Derby county
The first part of your statement is going to happen next season, hopefully the latter will follow soon.
your wish has been granted.
Mad watching this in 2023. What a difference a new owner and manager can make!
I support Nottingham Forest because my mum is from there and I wanted to be different from the rest of my family who are Liverpool fans , I love the history of Brian clough and what he's done for the club , but the main reason I support them is because I get a buzz of hope every preseason that we might jus return to their former glory days
Wonderful. How do you think you will fare next season? - Danny
Best channel on UA-cam!
Great work !
It could be even better with the tactical analysis of the team.
Been waiting for one of my subscriptions to make a video, and it was you!!
Finally, you've done it. I had seen you do Leeds United and Aston Villa and thought "Where is Forest." Possibly a Notts County one coming soon?
Great clip as ever. These little bites just leave me craving more!
Well. How about that. We got an answer to that last question.
This is without a doubt the greatest managerial accomplishment in the sport. I don’t care what you think. Clough and this Nottingham team are both underrated.
Leicester City 2015/16 5000-1
It was a 2 man effort, Clough did nothing significant without Peter Taylor!
Sad that football went from unpredictable glory moments like this, to Man City and PSG today
Leictser doesn’t ring bells
Also Lyon beat city
Video about irrelevant club, comment about those relevant club. Show how irrelevant your ' club' is
city and psg 0 CLs
Another great video! Next time do Stuttgart?
Already watched a few videos of yours. Gonna have to say love your work or whatcha do, keep 'em coming. Suggestions: I think Leicester deserved one, on their "miracle" season last year. As for Forest, I am looking forward to see this club back to Premier League.
Thanks buddy!
The future looks bright with Mr. Marinakis! Great video, please make an extension - new owners have brought the club and fans back together again by investing in the squad, appointing established backroom staff, holding meetings with fan groups, publishing plans to expand the stadium, giving back to the community in the shape of fundraisers and charity events and currently sitting in the play off spots! What a turn around, if we go up especially
I'm Forest till I die, and that's a fair assessment.
This season looks promising. Nottingham Forest are showing ambition in the transfer market, really hoping that they can survive relegation this season and who knows one day become again a top 6 Premier League side.
another theme that I was very curious but never got the answers until now. I knew Peter Taylor was influential but I didn't know it was that much. Keep up with the great videos!☺
Awesome as always
If you’re on this comment section sadly you would know Nottingham forest bottled getting play-offs because they some reason have the tendency to not play to the whistle but hopefully the following season they go up also for the first time in a. While Leeds have gone up after being the champions of the league over West Brom who finished second and then it was Brentford with an insane attack and the most goals ever scored in the championship in a single season Ollie Watkins was the highest scorer in the league at a still young age but main part of the story is forest and how they don’t play to the whistle which lets them down massively hope the best from the first Man City supporter as everyone like to say hope you all have a nice day
Picked Nottingham Forest in FM20. After watching this video, I'm very hyped to play the game again after months. Thanks for the video ^^
Thank you for this.
5 years later they are back in the Premier League looks like its the rise and fall and rise of Nottingham Forest now
Amazing achievement. There was a great documentary about Clough's Forrest and it seemed as if Brian Clough and Peter Taylor's falling out was the beginning of the end for Forrest. Peter Taylor was the unsung hero in that duo because he found the young, unassuming talent before they won the league.
He never gets talked about much as a player but over 10 years or so, before he got hurt, Clough scored tons of goals. His conversion rate was like .92. Something like that. Which is top 5 all time.
Love these videos
We now need an updated version the rise, fall and rise again of Forest!!
Well your back in the Premiership now! Make the most of it.
Ian Woan was another good player in that mid-90s side. Really enjoyed watching their football.
They are back!
I love this channel ♥
Thank you kindly - Danny
Do one on how Bournemouth rose to top flight football
Yo Forest Fans I feel the pain and sharing it as I am a Fenerbahce fan and we haven't had the championship since 2014-2015. Salutes!
Always wondered why clough broke the European cup winning team up too quickly. They went from winning it in 1980 to not really challenging for the next 6 or 7 years. Strange that.
Martin D I remember that, the 1984 UEFA cup semi final against Anderlecht. Very dodgy decisions in the game in Belgium, I’m not surprised he admitted it eventually.
As a Leeds fan I hope Forest get promoted. Lots of parallels between the clubs to this day. They too belong in the top flight but gotta be good enough and earn it. They have a big chance.
Watching this today in late May 2023 as a Forest fan feels like dreamland ❤🌳❤🌳❤
Could you do something with AC Milan? Maybe Rise and (sort of) fall,or maybe explaining Arigo Sacchi's and AC Milan tactics?
Optimus the guy who founded a.c. Milan was also from Nottingham
hi, you workits greate, all the people that are behind this channel are making a really good job andi truely mean it...
yesterdeay was de UCL match of PSG 4 - BFC 0... it was a great matach and i think that you can make like a analysis of why and How PSG beat up Barcelona... i know that sound ambicious what i think that it would be great to analyce that kind of matches.
Sory for my erros in my writing (im from a non english country)
Saludos
If forest qualify, then who will mark Goldbridge support ? Forest, Man United, Brentford or Liverpool ? 🙄
Anyone wanting to know more about this side I would throughly recommend 'I believe in miracles'. Honestly the best football documentary I've ever seen with an amazing 70's soundtrack
An amazing story this club has if not a very sad one. There was a lot not mentioned in this video like Roy Keane the Des Walker own goal and of course the Hillsborough disaster. I have seen clubs die right in front of our eyes like both Sheffield clubs Blackburn, Bolton and Oldham Athletic but few fall as hard and as far as Nottingham Forest. I hope things turn around for them.
As a Forest fan, I love this video and I can only hope that some guy will turn up and make Forest great again in my lifetime!
uMAXit Football should do one on Notts County, The Worlds oldest professional Club, We have a very very Big History And We Also have A proud one at that, Its a shame were "overshadowed" as such but it'd be class if u did
Sabri Lamouchi!!!!!
Would love to see your take on the 'actual' influence of a manager on a football team citing examples of teams that have proved to be better than the sum of their parts (Leicester City in 15/16, Portugal/Greece in the Euros etc).
And also the disappointingly waning fanzine culture in football - looking at some of the best fanzines that are still alive and how deeply rooted they are to the whole matchday experience.
for example rehaggel is certainly a miracle man of fotoball benches
i still remember how he overcame the superiority of french and spanish side during his spell in greece through using a 5-3-2 system
he also had managed to win a bundesliga championship with newly-promoted lautern side
santos is also a defense-oriented manager with a lot of sucess during his management in numerous greek teams
More of these kind of videos!
and they rise again 🔥
Fantastic. I hope you do a video on the Shamrock Rovers XI (United Ireland team) v Brazil.
A team Derick Dougan assembled from Ireland both North and South for charity against the will of the IFA. Which cost him his international career with NI.
your voice is heaven
Thoroughly recommend watching the docufilm and reading the book "I believe in Miracles" about Clough's and Taylor's early years at Forest, definitely recommended.
WHOS here after Nottingham Forrest got promoted again
It's the 2021/22 season in the championship and it looks like their gonna come back to the premier league. They're 3rd currently and have an upcoming match against 2nd placed Bournemouth which if they win will take them to 2nd or if they fail then have to fight tooth and nail in the promotion play offs.
One sad fact is that this season (2019/20) is that 19 of the 24 teams competing in the Championship(England's Second Division), including Nottingham Forest, Leeds United, Blackburn Rovers and West Bromwich Albion, once played in the Premier League. Out of the current roster, WBA are the favourites to earn automatic promotion. With Leeds United currently 3rd in the top playoff position. Stoke City are in the relegation zone, alongside former Premier League club Barnsley.
Do video on AC Milan
Umaxit please put a video about AC milan
well actually its an not a secret that italy economy is fallen and player dont get the perfect wages thats the reason why seria a is not as competitive as english,la liga nad bundesliga.
AC Milan would have a connection to the forest one too seen as they were founded by a man from Nottingham.
I’m actually pretty happy with how the team is doing now. I think we could survive next season in the premier league ❤️🌳🌳
And now they are back up after 23 years welcome back to the top flight
please turkish subtitle , please. I love this channel and I can speak and know English but it isn't enough to understand your videos. please bro, I want Turkish subtitle ❤❤❤
I love these breif history
Videos... would love to see one on QPR in their recent years
I'm still salty about that
I was thinking towards their finances since their takeover... players in and out, going leapfrogging between premier league and championship and how the position they are in now
YOUNG MAN, THAT WERE BLOODY GREAT!
Who is watching it after Nottingham Forest promotion back to Pemier League after so long
Do a video on AC Milan's fall from grace.....
they're on the way up so no point.
Davies Duale They're in 7th place, the same as last season. Yes, they did win Supercoppa Italiana but they haven't been doing all that well overall...
Maybe doing a video about the greatest team ever constructed and the tactics behind it would be better?,i mean the Arigo Sacchi's Milan :)
Would love to see a video on the rise and fall of Blackburn Rovers.
My dad went to every home game from 74 to 80 he was 23 when he stopped going cause he said after watching them win both European cups and league they could never top it he saw both european finals live aswell, I suppose you could say he isnt a real fan but he definitely has had a better footbqll fan experience than tonnes of us also soon after the 1980 final he moved to london like many young lads in that time. I just hope one day my team will do anything near to what forest did
You can't blame him for wanting to stop going so he can cherish the good memories. So many fans put themselves through years of heartbreak and I don't blame people if they don't want to go through with that!
uMAXit Football please do rise, fall, rise & fall from 1860 munich. They are the chaos club of germany. You will realise just reading the history on wikipedia...
A great team with a great history and great potential of course! Still has a very strong brand, far better than many teams around Europe which compete in European competitions. Championship is a tough league and it needs consistency so as to make the big step.
I wish Tifo Football would make my University notes one day !!
Please upload a video on fall of
A C milan and Inter milan
Do Sheffield Wednesday please. Loads of history and hopefully a brighter future finally
I'm not a Forest fan but I hope they make it back to Premier League one day along with Villa
Perfect reflection of today's game. A team with an absolutely unbelievable history, a record with the greatest manager in the English game, and now they're floating around the Championship relegation places with an owner so insane he couldn't get Manchester City relegated.
Beating FC Cologne after a 3-3 draw at home in the semi finals of the EC in 1979 was pretty amazing as well. I think I wore a hole in the carpet pacing up and down listening to it on the radio 😊
The rise and fall of Leicester city.
They haven't fallen, yet!
uMAXit Football "yet " :p
uMAXit Football we will be falling very soon though I'm afraid
youseef ihab Hahaha great shout!
just imagine they win the champions league and get relegated this year!
Nottingham Forest are one of the five English teams to have won the European Cup; the other being Manchester United, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Chelsea. I hope they're back to where their belong at the top flight of English football.
Be great if you could go through some of the fallen giants that now play in the Championship like you have done with Forest here, sort of like a series on them. Think Wednesday's story is an fascinating one where we had some exciting teams during the 90's and were a main stay of the Premier League but due to gross mismanagement were relegated in the year 2000 and haven't been back to the premier league since. During that period the club nearly went into administration and with a chairman threatening to sue supporters. Only just now do we have the right ownership to leads us back to the top flight.
please do a blackburn video.. it will really help the fans
THEY BACK
I used Nottingham in Fifa 19 Manager mode and took them to the top of the Prem and won the UCL before leaving for another club. Always had a soft spot for this struggling club. Such a fall from grace.
Time well spent then
Don't forget the Anglo-Scottish Cup. Maybe not the most renowned trophy the game has ever seen but Cloughie cited it as instrumental in building a winning mentality into a team which went on to rule Europe.
Can u do.a.brief history of Wimbledon football club as it.is one of the most interesting stories in football history.
We can put in on "The List". We should have a little video on the current club out in two weeks for our "Rags To Riches" series
ok thanks can not wait to watch
Do you think they will be back in the prem in the next 2-6 years
bobby robson and bryan clough the 2 best english managers - brian was a genius to win the league with forest and derby is unbeleivable and 2 european cups when only the champions played in it ............
Please do something on Southampton, from league 1 relegation zone to Europa league and EFL cup final
Scottchegg It's an incredible story that gets overlooked. I can still remember Forest beating Southampton to all but send them down to League 1. I had a pint with a saints fans and he was convinced that there was no way back for them. Then they went and got back to back promotions, incredible! Forest can learn alot from Southampton like the fact you need to replace good players with good players. This is something that has cost Forest everything.
