  • Yes, another table. I just realized when posting this how many table videos are here. On the next one we'll get to some CNC stuff.
Anyway, this table is made with locust and ebonized walnut.
The locust came from trees that were harvested by the Oklahoma City Parks Department. Instead of grinding them up to dispose of, they cut them into slabs and sold them in an auction.
To ebonize the walnut I used the vinegar from the Baltic birch dining table project. In part two of that video I soaked the steel plates for the legs in white vinegar to remove the mill scale. This cleaned the steel plates nicely and what was left was an iron rich solution of vinegar, or iron acetate. ( • Modern Industrial Balt... )
This solution reacts with the tannin in the walnut and turns it black.
I generally don't like to change the color of any wood but I had several gallons of this solution and thought it would interesting to try it.
    Leave any comments or suggestions.

I am so in love with this table and design. Two of my absolute favorite woods. I learned so much by watching this as an aspiring wood worker.

As I was watching this video I thought, "Why use walnut if you're basically 'painting it black'?". But then I read the caption you wrote and learned that it's the tannin in the walnut that does it. So any other wood wouldn't work. Thanks for that lesson. A lot of people wouldn't have added that bit of information so I appreciate learning that.
This is an absolutely beautiful table. What a great idea too, the way you did that. One question I have is did you (or perhaps would you) consider putting a 3°-5° bevel on the edge of that table? I've been looking at tons of table videos getting ideas lately and I've seen that done a few times. It really puts a nice finishing touch on tables of this caliber in my opinion.
    Thanks for the video.

Hello, Thanks for your comment. I generally hate to change the color of any wood, but just had to try this. The grain of the wood is still slightly visible too. Yes, I like putting bevels on the edge of my tables. I was so surprised at how much I liked the locust grain as I was finishing this table that I just left it alone. Here's my latest table that has a beveled edge. ua-cam.com/video/F-tkuG01p8A/v-deo.html

Very, very beautiful table! I’m a little concerned about expansion/ contraction issues on the cross pattern though. Not sure if it’ll maintain seam long term

@@LastLegWoodworks I can understand being comfortable when it's hot. Being hot makes every that much harder, and or unenjoyable.
I was just being silly for the most part, and wanted to give you some friendly grief!! If that is such a thing to do now a days...

Thanks! I’ll admit, I did wonder about changing the color of such beautiful wood. If you look through my videos you’ll see that I don’t really use stain or any colorant. I really wanted to try the ebonizing and plus I had all of that left over vinegar from a previous project to use. Thanks for watching!
