Something a bit different for this weeks video, comment your thoughts on living in New York! Also let me know if you want to see more NYC informational content!
Erik Conover thanks Erik!! To be honest I'm so embarrassed after watching your video at how much I actually pay to live in NYC. I need to learn, no I MUST learn to budget so I can live with less stress and be able to travel more like I did when I lived in California. Great content as always! Thank you for always inspiring 💙
Erik Conover As an OG viewer it’s nice to see the NYC blood still running through your veins. I remember watching your first video, just days after it was posted. It’s always been a dream of mine to move to nyc and I’ve been planning and saving for years. Now it’s only a few years away. Thank you for this video, it really motivated me to stay focused on my dream !
In South Africa it costs me about 450usd per month including rent and car costs, so going to New York I should be able to live for about 3 hours at most
Yeah I don't understand that, when I lived in NYC I had what was similar to his breakfast and it cost me maybe around $4, and mine included avocado toast and almond milk in my coffee.... ($15-20 for coffee beans, $3 loaf of bread, $3 avocado, $4 carton of eggs, $3 carton of almond milk) and I shopped at whole foods so you could probably do even better than that if you just went to the smaller bodegas.
As a 20 year old, born and raised in Queens, I can say it costs way less if you live in another borough and commute into Manhattan for your work. Not only is rent cheaper, but the average costs for groceries and daily consumables is greatly reduced. Living and paying rent in Manhattan is a pocket drainer.

@@MrPipoma rent $950/mo (3 bd 1 ba, split w two roommates) utilities: $60/mo food: $160/mo transportation: $0 if you bike gym: $27/mo entertainment: $200 total: $1,397/mo it's a very comfortable and livable lifestyle. i also have student loans and all that, but obviously not everybody has those haha
Bro I can live even cheaper than you but I don't want. The answer is a Green Card to USA :) free apartament, job for start. After some time first million and my own home :)
I like this guys hussle. These videos are well made and it's glossy but not insanely over the top unrealistic. All his videos he's essentially being honest, lots of people say it's crazy expensive to live there which is true. But most aren't gonna retire in new York, they just want to live a part of their lives in new York to experience it....it's a story itself...good work
I agree. Doing the math, his cheaper budget makes New York livable on $40k/year ($50k/year if you want to save for retirement), which is the usual starting salary (for a college graduate).
4.526.433 views well restaurants and bars are filled with people without those professions so there’s that. This experiment is also very subjective half of his expenses arent even realistic plus no one lives in Manhattan like that
There is even cheaper way of living. Spectrum internet - $44 Electricity - around $40. ( Just put most things into one outlet and turn them off to reduce trickle cost) Food - balanced diet $90 a week Fitness $15 Rent - Brooklyn and queens are in the "City" too and only 20 mins via train you can find something decent $1500+ Transport - $82 metro monthly via pre-tax It's all about budgeting, understanding your constraints and working inside them. If you want to live like a king but don't have the means then make the means!
The thing that surprised me the most was the cost of a coat from the thrift store! Here if you find a nice vintage coat in a thrift store it would be like $20 not $200
bonbonzz do not take the coat very literally, I think what he meant by the price of the coat are the things you spend on clothes, makeup, accessories, shoes, what you spend on extras in general per month
How are you so creative.. I would have sat there rambling about how people can't budget yet you managed to make that so understandable and seem so easy without offending anyone. Love your work Erik!
Munich, Germany. rent for a studio apartment is 700 USD / month, you can easily bike everywhere, food and fun averages at around 350 USD / month for me. So that is just over 1000 USD a month. You could, however, easily triple that by spending your money recklessly on eating out everyday, cabs, drinks in town, etc. I choose to go to a restaurant once a week and save money to travel the world :)
Christian Schrade, why restaurant once a week? Do you really feel the need for that? Or do you feel you are missing out on something if you don't do it because others are doing it?
Ok. Fair enough. Cause personally I don't care. Nothing I miss in my lifestyle. It is very very rare I eat out. Not only to save money, but also I like cooking my self. I can cook my meal better than most of the restaurants I can afford eating out in the town :-)
This is crazy, where I live my rent is $400 a month! I live in a urban city in Québec, Canada, for information. Everything is cheaper, except from the fact that you need a car to go everywhere. That $2 600 budget is about what I costs me to live for 3 months. I'll never complain about stuff being expensive here anymore.
I never in my life heard of a 1000 dollar jacket im my life, would never pay for that, thats stupid i think, maybe I'm just ghetto, but a 20 dollar jacket that can last a few years is just fine with me lol
Devin Mccurry armani its only 120 to 200 maybe lil more but i fine that price good compare to 1000 , you gotta invest in your self, why work to death if you wont enjoy the money in things you want , priorities first tho
It has to be though because it's so darn expensive. That's like people saying woo-hoo, Burger King pays $15 an hour in California...well yeah, Califreakingfornia is expensive, that's why.
Minimum wage is still the same and not everyone's garuntee to make over 50k a year to live in the city like that. Which is why more people are rather doing roommates and still not have much to save. Today's mind set of many young people is waste money to show off, and impress others you don't know either. That's not a life.
The video I've been waiting for! life isn't easy, but it's manageable and and as a teen, I can't wait to move to the big city. Your videos Erick always inspire me to do more and accomplish my goals. Thanks Bud!
Lived in a city once before, London. I now live a west coast village in Scotland with small harbour and my Fairline - Phantom 46, it's bigger than my house. The sense of freedom is immense. NY, London and Berlin are nice when I go for business but I will never live in a rat run again.
No matter where you live or what you do, always live below your means, but within your needs. Also to budget, budget, budget. That's the key to financial success.
Nashville TN and everything is basically the same. Now that's living outside the city so to speak. Mortgage is $800/ car&insurance $300/ Electricity $160/ cell phone $90/ Gas $250 month/ so not to much more than you. Although I didn't put food on here. Nashville housing market is going crazy. 124 families are moving to Nashville everyday, it's something crazy like that. Living right in downtown Nash is ridiculous, I've seen some apts go for $2,100 +
Brian Potts Nashville is the talk of Tennessee. Beautiful area and businesses are investing for cheap (while they can). It is no wonder Nashville is growing so rapidly.
I live downtown Nashville also and the rents are skyrocketing 65 to 70% of my salary is going to rent and utilities. I'm moving back in with my parents and just commuting the so I can finally save some money
Pink, this is what I expect as Nashville continues the grow. People wanting to live in the center of the newfound growth naturally dives the prices up. Hopefully Nashville will keep its charm as it continues to grow.
2017 We moved from Silicon Valley California to the Litchfield Hills of Connecticut to escape the outrageous cost of living in the Bay Area. It’s nice to take a short drive into NYC on a whim for the weekend and then return home to serenity.
I live in a small town in Kentucky, where I probably spend between 600-800 dollars a month max. It helps that my house in the country is paid for and the cost of living is very cheap. I also work in a factory here and make $68,000/yr.
I used to think this, but I don't anymore. It's an amazing city to visit and stay for a while. But I don't see the value in living in a shoebox with bed bugs and cockroaches, loud neighbors, even louder and dirtier/smellier streets, so many obnoxious people, brutal weather conditions, (hot and cold), all the while paying more for rent than nearly anywhere in the world. For what? Living in NY would be amazing if you were making an absolute KILLING with money and had a big house on the upper-east side - sign me up. But that's the 1%. Most people are living in squalor compared to other cities they could be in for the same cost of living. Not worth it at all.
same here. It was always my dream and some friends actually moved to London/New York. we're all in our 20s and they are not able to save a single penny. when they lose their jobs, they couldnt pay the next rent. I wouldnt want to live like that but some people like uncertainty and taking risks
Please don't fall into the fantasy. If you make enough to live here, then you're most likely working so much, it's hard to enjoy it. And vice versa. The Chinese say, if I send you to heaven, I send you to New York. If I send you to hell, I send you to New York. Lived here for 30 years.
I think for everyone who hasn't experienced living in NYC (myself included), would imagine themselves somewhere in Manhattan living the "Christian Grey" life or if not living in an industrial apartment or penthouse w/ just above average pay rent while enjoying life. But after watching "lifestyle" videos about people living in the big apple, I've realized that its actually quite hell if you don't earn at least 100K+ to at least have a comfortable lifestyle. It kinda changed my point of view but I still want to at least try.
Fred Flintstone - there is no such Chinese saying. It could be something your Chinese parents said to you, but it is not a saying used by anyone else to describe heaven, hell or New York.
For example, i live in Slovakia, and this is how much it cost. You can buy 2 room apartment for about 60 000 euroes ( not capital city), or rent one for 350 a month. Car insurance is not expensive, for a nice sedan lets say 2018 Mazda 6 you will pay about 120 euroes a year. Petrol is 1.40 a liter. Grocieries cost pretty much the same as everywhere else. Taxi is about 5 euro for 3,5 miles yourney. Electricity is for an ordinary couple about 35 euro a month for 2 room apartment. Salaries are about 600 euroes a month after tax for low job to 1000 for ordinary job like firefighter, soldier, if you work IT than about 1400 to senior accountant or similar 3000 a month. Gym membership is about 25 euroes a month. Ordinary pension is about 450 a month, soldiers and policemen about 800 a month. If you go to restaurant, ordianry working day meal ( soup and main meal) is about 4 euroe, night out restaurant meal in nice restaurant about 15 to 20 euroe for a meal per person. All in all, new your has its beauty, but somehow you have to earn quite a lot to enjoy life there. Great vid btw
You should study a bit more before you write something. Anyway, 3rd world countries are some developing countries of Africa, Asia, Latin America and Oceania. Do you even know where Slovakia is? Looks like you have no clue :)
Very interesting topic Erik! I couldn't believe some of the expenses in the first half and then how you were able to cut it so much is so crazy. You're so right, moderation is KEY! You can do anything in life when you set your mind to it.
many younger people will try to live like the first lifestyle and assume they have to blow through tons of money. There's so many ways to save in this city and 8.5 million people make it happen.
My boyfriend is from Peru and I am from Louisiana. We met for the first time on Dec. 4th in Boston. On Dec 9th we spontaneously decided to catch a bus (4hr 30min ride) to NYC. It was just for the day and we got there early Saturday morning at 2:30 AM. It was both our first time there and first week we've ever spent together. It was an absolute dream. On foot we walked around that city for about 20 hours give or take. We didn't sleep the night before. Around 7am that morning was when it snowed for the first time in NY and we just happen to have been there. It was my boyfriends first time EVER seeing snow in his life too. In that 20 hour period we got NY pizza at 3:30Am, visited the Rockefeller Christmas tree (and was the first people to go up to it before they had just moved the gates to enter that morning). We visited the new World Trade Center (& memorial of the old one), Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Times Square, and more!! All on foot. Towards the end of the day when the snow picked up and we were tired it got crazy. It was Saturday night and they had tons of people. We finally found a taxi and got back to the bus station to go back to Boston. We got back at 5Am Sunday morning and were complete zombies. Anyways we will never forget that time. It was absolute magic. Having my soulmate with me who lives so far away, was finally with me in the most magical city in the world. I had to share this because it makes a week today since we did it, and Erik has taught me so much about living your best life and going out and just LIVE. We did that. Thank you Erik for showing me anything is possible. I wish I could have seen you in the city!! All my love, Cylie + Franco. PS: I have pics and stuff on my instagram for anyone who actually read this!! (: @cylielynn
Sabrina O In NYC thrift stores are where the mega rich donate their musty smelly designer stuff. So that coat was originally probably around $8k or $10k. lol
i dont see the appeal of NYC anyway if you can't reap the benefits of the good aspects... sure you can work out on the street and make all your own meals and not do anything but guess what, you can do all of that in bfe oregon or wherever too. it depends what you care about and what you do. unless you work in some sort of industry that doesnt exist somewhere else...modeling, acting, fashion, yada yada theres no point. i would rather live in oregon and live good off of 96k a year than the way you lived for 96K+ in the first portion of the video. on another type of video, one could argue that you actually can live on a smaller income in many places if people didnt feel the need to constantly upgrade their phones, tvs, cars, buy mcmansions, etc. youtuber and social media fame is yet again leading this generation into feeling like they need all of this stuff to survive or be happy. just like the 90s did, etc. that is why the american dream is failing, because the american dream wasnt about all of that.
Caligula Longhbottom 100% on the money. I never understood the people who work at Low income jobs here in the city. You should be working somewhere lucrative or niche, like the examples you bought up. Also, definitely a lot of keeping up with the Jones and trying to impress people instead of being grateful for what you have. Much better to be in another place that's cheaper than keep struggling like a college student, living with a roommate or two.
Caligula Longhbottom Don’t have to own a car in nyc, and there’s ALWAYS something to do and somewhere new to go. So. You pay for that, with thousands of other things you can’t get outside of NYC.
Caligula Longhbottom you can do modeling in many places and for acting why wouldn't you move to either Atlanta or LA they both make most of the movies and tv shows so moving to NYC doesn't make sense if your an actor
I thought that was just me thinking that. He needs about £30,000 a year to just survive on the bare minimum in NY. Yikes. And £200 for a jacket? Where is Primark?😂 It's so expensive.
I live in South Georiga. I would I am not a big fan of small town living but being a married College students both my husband and I live in a really nice apt 2 bedroom downtown with amenities for only 600 a month. We spend about 350 on groceries and 500 on other bills and entertainment. We have enough left over to travel and pay our way through school. I am hoping to live in the city once we are finished.
Living in Croatia as a student i pay maximum 550$ for rent, food, coffe with friends, public transport, partying etc. every month, but mostly i spend even less. 😊
I am currently living in Seoul, South Korea and it costs about $1900 per month. I used to think Seoul was an expensive city to live, but after seeing this video I guess it's not that expensive. New York is surely a very pricey place to live. But very beautiful and charming! I enjoyed watching this video. Very useful and meaningful content!
in queens, the rent is $1500 a month. and you can eat for $7 a meal cooking yourself. you can order jackets off of walmart for $30. buy shoes from kmart for $30 also. i actually know a guy from queens who buys food from restraunts that cant sell their food at a discounted price
Aaaaah the single life. Add a wife 2 kids and some family (countless in laws) and friends... ie countless birthdays, holidays, sick days, because days, vacation days, doctors, groceries, 4 people (12 meals per day plus snacks), dinner parties, life insurance, health insurance ($2000 a month for family on average), private schools for kids ($1200 per month per kid), a vehicle, parking, auto insurance, auto repairs, home repairs, hair cuts, clothing, hobbies, daily travel expense, cell phone bills yay fam plan, internet, cable, aaaah and yes a much larger crib $$$, and yeh the list goes on like a saline dion song. Yup I remember the single days. BTW great Vids keep em flowing.. you are the man bro.
no one should force anyone to marry someone nor having kids😁 but I get it. we as humans need company in our lives. but money fucks everything and put limits
i was living in nyc , with 350$/m shared room + 120$/m for Subway + 19$/m Sim Card (lycamobile) included internet and free calls .. + 300$/m for food expenses + 50$/m other expenses = 850$/m Total hahaha
Lol I know right south side of Jamaica too lol haha, NYC today because of these hipsters n yuppies is making even the poorest parts rent go up!!!!!! That's why I was forced to move out way back......
Install motion sensor led lights. If you really cook all your meals, take the time at home at evenings and week ends to cook, package and freeze meals you can take for lunch and eat at home during the week, saving (by what I've seen in this video) $35 per day. Lay off expensive designer clothing. I'll bet you can probably save $1,500 per month like this.
I guess English is not your first lenguaje, he say "One of the more expensive" not "the most expensive". By the way English is not my first lenguaje either.
Jay M dozen organic eggs $5-$8 (average $6.50) Organic loaf of bread $3-$5 (average $4.00) Organic Gallon of OJ or Milk $5-$8 (average $6.50 ) Bananas $2-$4 for 6 bananas (average $3) Total $20/6 days (because who doesn’t skip one breakfast after a long night) So yeah a little over $3/day with organic breakfast prepared at home...
j ross amm 1$ for 15eggs so like 8$ a week about 1$ a day for breakfast u can buy some vegtabals for the whole week for 10$ also a piece of meat daily would cost 4$ daily maybe pissa or something about 5$ and i only eat pizza on free day also if u go to gym supplements is 60$ a month if u use it wisley about 2$ a day other stuff [toasts , bread , sweets] would cost less than 10 - 20$ a week so in total 10- 15$ a day for good & healthy food
I work in manhattan and commute there 5 days a week - I’m living at home with my parents right now to save money and pay off my student loans. I don’t pay rent but I’ll chip in for things here and there, buy my own groceries, etc. I calculated my costs one day and I’m spending ~1200 a month while living rent free just on bills and necessities. NY is just so crazy expensive and student loans are ridiculous lol But I like the comparisons you did. A lot of people at my job will buy lunch every single day. Even if you find a 10 dollar lunch deal, that comes to 50 a week and a month later that’s 200 dollars... I always make my food at home and meal prep for the work week. It’s incredible how much money you can save when you make slight changes like that.
Candid G Don’t want to be too invasive but what general area do you commute from. I worked in the city 2 months ago and the commuting costs were high relative to my salary. Similar situation living with parents with student loan debt.
Not invasive! I live on Long Island. And my student loan monthly payments are high AF. I also have a car so I can ya know, get to the train, go grocery shopping, etc.
Candid G ok, I’m northwest of the city. Commuted by bus & subway. I refinanced my loans a little over 2 years ago so they’re equal to my commuting costs. Hopefully 🤞I’ll be back (working) in the city or even another city soon.
Lana Draai I don’t think so, 300$ rental minimum, 30$ per week x4 for food = 150€ + travel expenses, insurance, car costs, extra food, visits, clothes...!
Dude in my country Kenya I spend around 150$ monthly included all costs. House which is a bedsitter = 7$/monthly Water bill-3$ monthly Electricity - 2$monthly Transport - 50$ monthly food - 20$ monthly Phone bill and internet - 5$monthly Life here is cheap and I live 30km from the capital city. I know people here who live even on 70$ a month
Well costs depend on country. Poland here takes around 500$/month for me to live here. But my salary would be just enough to pay for his cheaper version on NY :D
no because its a service, not a right. our government also doesnt regulate it or take it away after political turmoil etc. so go tell iran how corrupt the usa is.
quote: "our government also doesnt regulate it" But allow to keep cartel. Iran is very corrupted, but it does not mean, that usa is not corrupted. In usa is a lot of air in price of many things, for example health care is heavy corrupted in USA. quote: "I live in India and my internet cost 8$ a month and average speed is 300kbps" In india is very low quality of population, i.e. a lot of bad people.
There are problems in all countries, no country is or will ever be a utopia. With progress on some issues, other issues will arise, that is how the world works. Nothing is perfect but quite frankly the United States is pretty damn good. Id trade high cost internet and live in the USA before Id ever consider India...
200 won't even cover a plan that won't cover anything until you hit a $6K+ deductible. The cheapest bronze plan, which won't even cover things like prescriptions until you hit $6K+, is still over $400. I too luckily get healthcare through work, but it's a small employer and the money that they're spending on healthcare would easily be a raise for me of over $10k per year if we had universal healthcare.
I was shocked about the price you said. 500 a month for health care insurance? Damn. I feel priviledged that health care is covered by taxes where I live, so it's almost free for everyone.
That's a rip off I'm born and raised in NYC hells kitchen b4 the hipster yuppies came and kicked the original residents out in the early 90s.......my parents were paying 400 a month, grandfathered rate.......now the same apt their paying 4800.......fact!!!!!!!!!!!
You just popped out in my feed and I appreciate this video. I'm a senior in college living with my parents and I just can't wait to have my own place. This is really awesome! I'm also a business student and I'm probably going to work as a project manager in the future in the IT field so I'll probably make good money. But you're so right! Living modestly to travel is what I am definitely going to do. I just gotta find some really good buddies to split this rent. Lol
I used to live in New York City and I can tell you it’s becoming even more expensive in Brooklyn so don’t be afraid to spend apartments rent at stores.
no, sorry, maybe i read wrong, 25 dollars for breakfast? i'm italian and here is so rare found a place where you spend 25 dollars for breakfast ahaha omg. I mean for example i go in a bar , take a coffe, a croissant , i spend 2 , 50 euros . sorry for my english. same for launch , 15 dollars if i go in a restaurant . but if i want to take an hamburger from burger king , so i need a fast launch, i will spend 8 euros but i take the full menu like hamburger chips and coke . Is so different here about south and north italy. Usually if you go in south of italy you eat so much and spend little, instead in north there are luxury restaurant where spends a lot of money for not much food.
An average meal tends to be $10 if you're lucky- and that's at Chipotle. When you eat out at something other than a restaurant chain, you should def be expected to spend at least $15-20...it's NYC after all :)
Miami Beach - yeah, I make a lot of pasta dishes with varieties of grilled veggies and/or meats but it never most me more than max $5 a serving. It’s usually $3 or less.
NYC seems like a place where you really have to co-operate with each other. Living in Chicago, the 2nd estimate really doesn't sound that insane. Our house costs 1500 a month and it doesn't have a home theater. All together, we probably spend about 2,000-3,000 a month
Hey handsome, I am a native new yorker, and I couldn,t wait to leave nyc, the cost of living is really to high I moved to mass. Where I have been living for more than 20 years. All who want a piece of the big Apple, well just pick up a bowl of whip cream and happy dippin.
Wow this is amazing Erik. We are a family of four (two small kids). We live in Prague, CZ. We spend 3,600 USD per month on average. Your video is great, thank you.
Living with a roommate when I'm 30 just to say I live in NY? Nah...plenty of great cities in the US where you could live downtown by yourself, live a great life, etc., all under less than $2500 a month. I'd know - that's my life.
you get what you pay for though. NYC has its reputation for a reason. It's a great city with lots of opportunities for the young and ambitious souls. People don't just come here to say "hey I live in NYC". They come here for opportunities, diversity, connection and amazing pizza. If he couldn't afford the $2,500 rent then he wouldn't have taken it, clearly he's paying the rent.
You could shop for food when grocery stores have offers (buy one get one free for example) and choose TJ’s :) those were my tricks to living in nyc . And Whole Foods has great prices on many items if you take the time to compare, even cheaper than regular groceries but organic and much healthier !
I dont understand why people move to the city, maybe a 100 miles from it, but right into it??? traffic, expenses, living space, parking... a 500 sq ft place or less is not living at all for 2250 rent. where I am at $2500 a month could get you a 5500sq ft home, 3 car attached garage, 5 beds and 5 baths. value at 430k to buy it. Places like this are ideal for gatherings and backyard bonfires. I just dont get the city living thinking, always more crimes, noise, pollution.
Gamer007 for most, living in the city is easier. Don’t need a car, don’t worry about parking or traveling time if closer to your job, more activities to do. Living in the country is easier if you save up and can work from home or know people to hire you as selections are more limited and driving is mandatory as everything is spaced out. Living outside the city is best of both worlds while also the worst.
Why do that, esp in NYC where you would ride a train into the city and home again for two hours each way!! I LOVED being in the center of all of the action and there were things to do 24/7. $2500 a month did not even pay for my common expenses ($12,450. per mo) and RE tax ($125 as it was a tax abatement new building) (these you pay monthly to your apartment building and to the city) or no go!! IF you own a car, you pay btwn $500,000 to $1,000,000 just for the space PLUS maintenance fees of around $1000. a month to keep it clean. I had a 1250 main terrace with outdoor kitchen and lounge area as well as two 12 x 8 terraces off each bedroom so outside was available and much used. NO Maintenance and even your garbage is taken OUT of your apartment for you while you are at work. The super will come in and will take the trash out for you adn wipe down the trash can. I never ever lifted one finger for maintenance. Which was great because in NYC, you are CONSTANTLY moving somewhere every day. On Sundays, if I didnt go out to a brunch or to someones condo for it, I would sit at home and get caught up on my life. If that day was filled.....oh well, sleep while you can during the week because you LIVE for the weekend. Even if you hit a new bar/club every Saturday night for a year, you STIL would NOT see all of the places. I tell you one thing......I willl NEVER EVER live in a city with under 5 million people. NEVER.
Definitely want to see more!! Great video , keep them coming 🖒
Wow I thought I had to earn 10'000 per month to survive in NYC, I am ready to move ! NYC I'm coming ! Thanks Erik for this useful video !
Erik Conover As an OG viewer it’s nice to see the NYC blood still running through your veins. I remember watching your first video, just days after it was posted. Great video Erik! As always!
In South Africa it costs me about 450usd per month including rent and car costs, so going to New York I should be able to live for about 3 hours at most
Same in Poland.

8 dollars to cook eggs and coffee for brekky each day!
Are those _Faberge Eggs?_
Going out to eat breakfast cost 25 dollars like damn, where I'm from getting a bite eat in 10 dollars or less for one and we complain about that lmao

I think this video isn't intended for the poor like yourself.

As a native New Yorker, this video was so refreshing. I love your videos Erik you are inspiring xx
Mike Santis I just enjoy eating out. I am not that good of a cook myself 😅
Ok. Fair enough. Cause personally I don't care. Nothing I miss in my lifestyle. It is very very rare I eat out. Not only to save money, but also I like cooking my self. I can cook my meal better than most of the restaurants I can afford eating out in the town :-)
Mike Santis I usually go some burger joint or a Thai place. So nothing too fancy. Probably 15-20 USD for a main and a drink.
Hey you should make a video about it, I’d watch it
This is crazy, where I live my rent is $400 a month! I live in a urban city in Québec, Canada, for information. Everything is cheaper, except from the fact that you need a car to go everywhere. That $2 600 budget is about what I costs me to live for 3 months.

Minimum wage is still the same and not everyone's garuntee to make over 50k a year to live in the city like that. Which is why more people are rather doing roommates and still not have much to save.

Simple, short, to the point and purely amazing, brilliant, you should do this for every city in the USA and Capitols around the world!!!
What a dream it would be to live in New York City 🌃

We did that. i dont see the appeal of NYC anyway if you can't reap the benefits of the good aspects... sure you can work out on the street and make all your own meals and not do anything but guess what, you can do all of that in bfe oregon or wherever too. it depends what you care about and what you do. unless you work in some sort of industry that doesnt exist somewhere else...modeling, acting, fashion, yada yada theres no point. i would rather live in oregon and live good off of 96k a year than the way you lived for 96K+ in the first portion of the video. on another type of video, one could argue that you actually can live on a smaller income in many places if people didnt feel the need to constantly upgrade their phones, tvs, cars, buy mcmansions, etc. youtuber and social media fame is yet again leading this generation into feeling like they need all of this stuff to survive or be happy. just like the 90s did, etc. that is why the american dream is failing, because the american dream wasnt about all of that.
Caligula Longhbottom you can do modeling in many places and for acting why wouldn't you move to either Atlanta or LA they both make most of the movies and tv shows so moving to NYC doesn't make sense if your an actor

also if u go to gym supplements is 60$ a month if u use it wisley
about 2$ a day
other stuff [toasts , bread , sweets] would cost less than 10 - 20$ a week
so in total 10- 15$ a day for good & healthy food
I work in manhattan and commute there 5 days a week - I’m living at home with my parents right now to save money and pay off my student loans. I don’t pay rent but I’ll chip in for things here and there, buy my own groceries, etc. I calculated my costs one day and I’m spending ~1200 a month while living rent free just on bills and necessities. NY is just so crazy expensive and student loans are ridiculous lol
But I like the comparisons you did.
Lol yeppp...
Candid G ok, I’m northwest of the city. Commuted by bus & subway. I refinanced my loans a little over 2 years ago so they’re equal to my commuting costs. Hopefully 🤞I’ll be back (working) in the city or even another city soon.
lol nice! thats my goal for one day soon
It is the best video you can find now when I'm commenting in here when it's comes to " average cost to live in new york city"
I spend about €500 a month on everything. I live in Utrecht (Netherlands) 😄
Lana Draai yoooo landgenootje!
Haha hoe doe je dat??
Same thing in Prague (Czech Rep)
Wow hoe dan??
Lana Draai I don’t think so, 300$ rental minimum, 30$ per week x4 for food = 150€ + travel expenses, insurance, car costs, extra food, visits, clothes...!
When are we getting that apartment tour, Erik? I've been anxiously waiting! Great video as always.
its comin! The apartment is ALMOST fully decorated
Dude in my country Kenya I spend around 150$ monthly included all costs.
House which is a bedsitter = 7$/monthly
Water bill-3$ monthly
Electricity - 2$monthly
Transport - 50$ monthly
food - 20$ monthly
Phone bill and internet - 5$monthly
Life here is cheap and I live 30km from the capital city.
I know people here who live even on 70$ a month
Well costs depend on country. Poland here takes around 500$/month for me to live here. But my salary would be just enough to pay for his cheaper version on NY :D
Internet is expensive
Because is USA is highly corrupted country.
no because its a service, not a right. our government also doesnt regulate it or take it away after political turmoil etc. so go tell iran how corrupt the usa is.
I live in India and my internet cost 8$ a month and average speed is 300kbps
quote:
"our government also doesnt regulate it"
But allow to keep cartel.
Iran is very corrupted, but it does not mean, that usa is not corrupted. In usa is a lot of air in price of many things, for example health care is heavy corrupted in USA.
quote:
"I live in India and my internet cost 8$ a month and average speed is 300kbps"
In india is very low quality of population, i.e. a lot of bad people.
There are problems in all countries, no country is or will ever be a utopia. With progress on some issues, other issues will arise, that is how the world works. Nothing is perfect but quite frankly the United States is pretty damn good. Id trade high cost internet and live in the USA before Id ever consider India...
You're forgetting health insurance, which can easily cost $500+ in NYC.
I’m lucky my company provides it for me lol saving money 101 get a good job
Yeah add that to the list and it's little wonder no one can save.
At least 200 dollars per month, it’s crazy. I’m so glad my jobs covers a lot of it. Health care should not cost more than 100 imo
I was going to comment how inaccurate this was until I watched the second half, LOL!
I'm a very big fan of u...
And New York is the heaven...
I'm from India...
thanks for the love!!
I made a vid with my expenses too. Crazyyy how much it really costs. Mine comes out to be like 4200 a month all said and done just to live
i'm going to watch it
That's a rip off I'm born and raised in NYC hells kitchen b4 the hipster yuppies came and kicked the original residents out in the early 90s.......my parents were paying 400 a month, grandfathered rate.......now the same apt their paying 4800.......fact!!!!!!!!!!!
nice vid
You are really doing it man. Love the video. Just like how you love your New York. I love my Toronto.
I didn't know Ollie Ritchie was your room mate! You guys are going to make some amazing videos together! 🙌
heyyy how is Vancouver:)
haha just for the month of December
The fact that you “watch” Titanic with your roommate cracks me up 😂😂 ahh I need friends 😜
Your video is very helpful ! NYC ❤️
Lol
Love this cost comparison Erik! Good job!
New York is fascinating because there are so many different ways to live life here
actually this is easy, it really depends on what borough of NYC. Queens for example is not that bad.
My new favorite channel on youtube!
so work is watching coinbase charts lol
Marketing
Dude in Greece you only need like 600$ max for everything.. if you live alone..
Hello from Romania :) Almost the same here.
Not necessarily in some towns you can pay 400 € only in rent
250$ here in India if you live in a big city
@@rahulmahbubani1392 wow thats cheap !
in Tehran you can live with 100-150$ a month
Usually if you go in south of italy you eat so much and spend little, instead in north there are luxury restaurant where spends a lot of money for not much food.
bella fra
Sooooo where does your "roommate" sleep? Especially since you have the Murphy bed......😁
j w OMG. You took the thought right out of my head LOL 😂😂. I think that might be too personal to ask.
His roommate sleeps between his legs.
j w Isn't there a couch in the living room?
Cool video. I am from New Jersey originally but i've lived in Uppsala, Sweden the last 8 years and I think the cost of living here is quite awesome
Whaaat?! That dinner doesn't cost 15$, probably something like 3$ lol
Miami Beach It’s New York
I live in CA- Berkeley to be exact which if not the same more expensive than NY. Dinner like that should NOT be $15, lol.
An average meal tends to be $10 if you're lucky- and that's at Chipotle. When you eat out at something other than a restaurant chain, you should def be expected to spend at least $15-20...it's NYC after all :)
8$+10$+15$ for home made, standard light food? Equals 1000$ month, no way that can be right!
Miami Beach - yeah, I make a lot of pasta dishes with varieties of grilled veggies and/or meats but it never most me more than max $5 a serving. It’s usually $3 or less.
This city is not meant for new settlers
I think this is much better - "If you can make it in Uganda, Brazil, Mexico and Philippines, , you can make it anywhere"
NYC seems like a place where you really have to co-operate with each other. Living in Chicago, the 2nd estimate really doesn't sound that insane. Our house costs 1500 a month and it doesn't have a home theater. All together, we probably spend about 2,000-3,000 a month
I could live for a month using your electricity bills alone.
3600$ isn't a bit too much for Prague??
"Because i live in NYC, i don't cook." ...so relatable...lol
Living with a roommate when I'm 30 just to say I live in NY? Nah...plenty of great cities in the US where you could live downtown by yourself, live a great life, etc., all under less than $2500 a month. I'd know - that's my life.
Alon T you feel me
you get what you pay for though.
לונלון נשיקות מישראל ♡
Where do you live?
@@RocknRollDina yes. One thing I love about NYC is the vibe and diversity. I also shoulder bump people time to time and blame it on the crowds lol
You could shop for food when grocery stores have offers (buy one get one free for example) and choose TJ’s :) those were my tricks to living in nyc . And Whole Foods has great prices on many items if you take the time to compare, even cheaper than regular groceries but organic and much healthier !
Nice tips!
I love this video! It really shows how anything is possible if you make the right choices to make it happen.
I just dont get the city living thinking, always more crimes, noise, pollution.
agree 100%. I live 15min outside of my major city. 4650sqft 6 bedroom 3.5 bath fully custom home. mortgage is $2150 per month.
u wouldnt rly need a car in new york
NEVER.
Gamer007 I agree. Nyc is over rated. It's sooo fukin expensive and this dumb city eats your money. I don't find the allure of the city at all
Love this so much Erik! Such a clever approach to this video! We lived there for almost 7 years everything is on point for sure!
WTF $25 for breakfast?
Its like throwing your money out of the window
waslos man holy shit your mad
waslos man Lol it’s not an everyday thing I think the purpose of that $25 breakfast was to portray how people live on 6 figure salary.
According to his expenses he must earn more than 10000$ per month
maybe a Michelin shop
