I just got me a mill yesterday and man does it make life easier. In the last 3 weeks I got my sandshark, mill and heat treat oven. I don't have any excuses anymore. Thanks for the video 👍

Perfect timing for me. I’m starting guard fitment today for four knives. Thanks Denis!

I definitely like the step method better. Less worries about gaps, looks great, and is fast with a mill.

The other part I didn't mention is the step method introduces stress risers in those 90 degree corners. If you have a mill, it's easier to mill out all but about .020" near the top of the slot and use that to hammer on your guard. Definitely no gaps that way and you don't worry about the stress risers or thinner tang. I've covered that in other hidden tang knife videos. Thanks for watching.

@@TyrellKnifeworks You still radius the corners using the step method with no issues. You only take a small amount off the tang which has no real effect on the strength of the blade.

@@NelsonJ1try the other method of hammering on the tang while leaving a bit on the top ti mushroom out. I think once you try it, you’ll move to that. It’s what most master smiths use. 😉

@@TyrellKnifeworks I've seen a method used with the mill where you mill a small portion of the underside of the guard thin, so when you hammer it on it easily bend and molds tightly into the shape of the tang. Have you seen or tried that?

I wish this video would have come out a week ago lol. I’m working on a Bowie knife right now and wanted to do a hidden tang, but changed it to a through tang instead.

I'm very happy to have a sand shark! It's been a challenge with a 4 inch wide cleaver though it did make shorter work of getting vertical scratch marks out! I'm looking forward to using it on something a bit more manageable!
Keep up the good work, Dennis! I learn a lot in each video you put out!

I read that as "gourds and handles" for some reason, so I thought this was going to be much more vegetable oriented than it is.

Fitting a gourd to your knife is much more complicated. That’s part of the advanced series. 😜. Thanks for watching
