This is the system I user to sharpen ALL my knives. Any questions about this build?
Will this work for recurves?
@@thewaylonandjoeshow9540 sure, it’s all about how you move the blade across the guide. For recurves like kukri’s, you just need to be a bit more careful with your movements and follow the blade. For really aggressive curves like karambits you just use the edge of the belt.
I was wondering how you address blades of differing thickness? The clamps look like they can take a pretty thick blade, but upon thinking about it it seems like, if the blade is aligned with and centered perfectly in the clamp for a nice thin kitchen knife, that a big bowie with a 1/4" thick spine would be off center in the clamp and then you end up with a different bevel angle on each side. Would you then have to sharpen one side at a time, turning the blade around in between?
@@addictchris2503 The clanps are spring loaded and each blade you put in centers them again. It’s how all blade holders work.
@@TyrellKnifeworks Actually I just modeled the WEN blade holders in CAD. Unlike the WE holder where both sides of the clamp move, with the WEN holder half of the clamp is fixed with the inside face aligned through the center of the holder rod. The other half of the clamp is the only side that moves, so the thicker the blade gets, the more the blade edge moves away from center toward one side and you definitely get a slightly different angle on each side. The GOOD news is that you need a pretty thick blade for that difference to really matter. On a 1/4" thick blade the difference works out to a bit over one degree from one side to the other. You wouldnt notice that difference by eye, and on thinner blades even less.
Since the edge is offset to one side by half the blade thickness, when you flip it to do the other side the edge moves a total of one full blade thickness, so if it really matters you can simply put a shim on the side of the holder bar with the movable clamp the exact thickness of the blade to account for the difference. 1/4" blade, 1/4" shim. Easy peasy.
Its not going to stop me from building the jig and using it. Its still a brilliant jig :)
Just sharpened my first 2 knives with this system A+++
That’s great! Thanks for your support! ❤️
This attachment is amazing!! First knife out of the gate passed the paper test. Thank you for not only a great product but also the perfect instructional video. I highly recommend this to all.
Thanks so much, Erik! I’m thrilled it’s working out for you! 🙏
Looks like a great system Dennis! The cameo from the boss surprised me. Thanks again Dennis and three Mrs!
🤣🤣 She is laughing and very happy someone noticed! Thanks for watching!
She is also happy to be called The Boss!! 😊
What a great idea. I just followed your instructions and made mine. I used 1.5 x 1 inch bar as that is all my metal shop had. Turned out great and so quick and easy to sharpen now. 20 mins before 5 mins now. Thanks for all the great videos
That's great, Toby! I'm glad it's working for you. Thanks for watching.
After years of using different devices, I discovered the TS-Prof sharpener and it is the best one I have ever used.
I’ve used that one. Still you get the start/stop effect on larger knives and it still takes forever compared to using a 2x72 though.
Really like this attachment, especially for larger knives.
Most of the compound abrasives tend to run pretty cool anyway, which is good because they all tend to die a horrible death with too much moisture on them.
It really is nice for large knives and swords since you can swap in a longer guide rod. Thanks for watching!
Got mine Saturday and it works like a champ. Have sharpened several knives with it. Very repeatable, very easy. Thanks!
Thanks so much, Rob!
Well just sourced the rest of the steel....awesome setup. Using a nut and a bolt until my ratchet handles are delivered. Had to slightly modify as I have an old Bader and a TW90 and both use 1.25" tool arms.
Thanks for sharing!!!!
I’m glad it worked out for you!
Brilliant system Mr Tyrell. Just completed your sharpening attachment and it works as you mentioned. I used to hand sharpen directly on the belt and I have to confirm that the first sharpening used to be quite frustrating…. not anymore. Thanks muchly from Saint-Sauveur (Québec, Canada)
I'm glad it worked out for you, Michel! PS - I've been to Saint-Sauveur, it's beautiful there. 😉
@@TyrellKnifeworks I have noticed your Canadian background. I retired to St-So after 36 yr of service with the Canadian Armed Forces.
Must admit that you are offering this sharpening attachement at extremely good price 👍
@@michelheroux6871 unfortunately I can’t ship them to Canada right now. The shipping would be too expensive.
That is slick - looks like it would work nicely.
It works extremely well! More will be available next week.
WOW, those sold out fast...guess I'll have to build my own!! Thank you for this amazing build!!
More will be available to order next week! If you want to get on the list, email me at tyrellknifeworks at gmail. Thanks!
@@TyrellKnifeworks yes sir. Absolutely will get on the list. Thank you
Very impressive sharpening system. I lost my subscription service, when my power went out last week. I just now refound your channel and resubscribe.
Welcome back, Jerry! Thanks for taking a look at the sharpener.
Great video - great tool! I like this for my shop, so will build it for us to use. Thank you for posting this.
I'm glad it was helpful, James! Do total up the parts before you start, I think you might see its not far off the cost to buy it. 😉. Thanks for watching.
I’m new to knife making and I really like the idea of having a jig for final sharpening … nothing worst than spending a bunch of time on a knife and having two slightly different secondary bevels lol! Awesome video thanks for sharing
It certainly is easy to screw this up if you're just doing it by hand. I suck at freehand sharpening like that. Thanks for taking a look.
Brother, this is just freaking awesome :) Ive just ordered the parts and will be building this ASAP! I also have a wicked edge system and while it does give me a great edge, it TAKES FOREVER and I hate using it :) Thank you!
It’s a great system and SO much faster than the WE! Thanks for watching
I feel like these attachments help a beginner learn the feel of doing it on their own. But a professional or someone selling knives, should be able to manage a simple task like this freehand. But it's a very cool tool for the beginner
You’re not a knifemaker I assume? A “simple” task of attaining exactly a 15 or 17 degree angle precisely along the entire blade isn’t something that’s easy to do. Most professionals sharpen with machine like Tormek’s which are around $800 or a Wicked Edge which over $1k, yet they all have 2x72 grinders. This attachment is actually for the medium to advanced knifemaker. A beginner may not even have a 2x72. Thanks for watching
Awesome brother
Thanks for checking it out, Tony!
Well done friend 👍
Thanks for watching, Don!
looks great Denis , I think once I am set up with a 2x72 this will be something I invest some time in making
Thanks for sharing
It really is the best and quickest way to sharpen! Thanks for watching.
Excellent!
Thanks for checking out this build, Anthony!
Brilliant... ordered.
Thanks for your order, Roger! 🙏
Cool but easy sharpening system.
Thanks for taking a look, Stephen. More will be available next week if you’re interested.
Nice system, and of course there's still the possibility of user error (at least for me!) since the grinding angle appears to be regulated by the friction of the WEN attachment on the horizontal bar and the angle set by eye. Can't think of a way around that, but you obviously get great, repeatable results.
Ha, don’t worry about the friction on the bar, that’s completely irrelevant and doesn’t affect the performance. The end result is excellent and very easy to achieve. It was good enough to pass my JS presentation tests. 😉. Thanks for watching, Bryson!
Man I need more info in that jig at 7:30. that is awesome
That’s just a 5/8” rod welded to a plate so the radii are easier to do. 👍. Thanks for watching.
This really looks like the way to go for sharpening. I’m sure with a little practice it will save a huge amount of time. Do you ever create the secondary bevel completely with this or strictly sharpening?
The first belt sets your secondary bevel do you do it all on this attachment! Thanks for watching
Could this be built out of aluminum?awesome Channel and info
Yes, it could be. For me it’s cheaper to source it out of steel is all. Thanks for watching.
I’ll buy one.
They are for sale on my website or at: Housemade.us, maritimeknifesupply.ca, diyeurope. Thanks for watching.
@@TyrellKnifeworks purchased. Can’t wait. Love your work.
@@TyrellKnifeworks which sets of belts do you use to sharpens blades with?
@@dominicdwk I start with a 120 ceramic then I move to the 320/600/1200 Norton Norax belts. I like the structured abrasives for sharpening.
Bro really took my FIRST
Thanks for watching!
Looks like a great system. Went to order this on your link. Link was empty. Are you still making these, or will I have to build it myself?
I have these in stock right now. tyrellknifeworks.com/shop/ols/products/perfect-blade-sharpening-attachment. Thanks for watching
That's an elegant solution!
Question: Would you go higher than 1200 grit for any reason? Maybe just ball out and get a 10000 grit belt for the lolz?
You must really like those Norax belts. Your voice changed so much when you switched!
Haha, yeah my wife thought it would be funny to go one of the voice overs. I don’t typically go higher than 1200 but you certainly could if you wanted a fiber edge. Those Norax belts go really high. Thanks for watching!
Could you recommend a 2x72 grinder, please ?
If you just want to buy one you can assemble, get a Brodbeck Ironworks grinder, they are around $2600. If you can weld and price is a factor, get a Revolution from Housemade.us. They provide a kit for about $725 plus you need a motor ($220) and a vfd ($150). Each performs pretty much identically. I have one of each. 👍
Link to buy is not working :(

@@TyrellKnifeworks Thanks it's on my short list, just got my 2x72 so I need to accumulate some more Opa bucks.
That fixture is WAY crooked!
No, it’s not crooked at all. You’re looking at the camera being at an angle. You think I’d sharpen all my knives on a crooked fixture and also sell hundreds of them?
@@TyrellKnifeworks The camera is not at an angle. The fixture is definitely crooked in this video.
@@David-gld Dude, it's not. Think what you want, but its not.
@@TyrellKnifeworks I rewatched it to be sure. The grinder is almost dead center of the camera shot. The fixture is crooked. You should remount the fixture and reshoot this video. Definitely.
@@David-gld Are you referrint to the 10 minute section? There it probably is a little off cause I'm just talking in front of the camera. I thought you meant at 16 minutes where I'm *actually* sharpening. There is dead straight, and where it counts. Hundreds of these have sold, it's a solid attachment.
That's a bargain for a sharpening system. They should sell really well.
I think it’s a good deal and very competitive. Plus I know it works well. 😉. Thanks for watching!
