  • After a long period of bad weather, I was keen to maximise the potential of a beautiful day by repeating the same line. The wind was too gusty for proximity flying so this was just a scenic flight in incredible surroundings.

Isn't it better to have trimmers closed when air conditions are bumpy or turbulent?

Yes. You're totally correct. The bumps weren't bad enough to have me concerned about collapses but they were bad enough not to be sensible to fly a proximity flight. Given the wing is only 16 sqm, it has a lot more tolerance than smaller wings and only 5cm trim travel compared to 10cm on the 13 sqm and smaller. A few days later, on the other side of the valley, I was forced to fly trimmers closed the whole way - making for a dull (and thus unpublished!) video.

Why does it make it less likely for collapse with trims closed?

@@albertdallas the steeper the angle of attack or steeper the wing is trimmed, ie open trims, the more susceptible it is to collapse. Any wing will be more stable with trims closed, or no speed bar.
