@@matthewriegner5180 I am fairly experienced with irons. I’ve only been shooting my Glock since February but I go every weekend. I have experience shooting guns but not semiautomatic handguns. I can run bill drills consistently under 2.50 all A zone and I know I won’t have that speed off the rip but I feel like it will take my training to the next level.

Putting a red dot on my pistol was game changing. It allows me to do essentially what I can do with a rifle in up close shooting which in my opinion is massively critical to response times and situational awareness which more times than not is the thing that can get you killed.

It's almost cheating. I had a cop friend who didn't believe in the dot life. I was standing with him at the 50 and I handed him my gun and asked him to shoot the q target. Shot 5 times went down to check and all 5 in. He now runs dot on and off duty

Former infantry and 20 year urban ghetto cop here. I can see value in the dot for law enforcement. Even then, most of my contact with armed suspects was no more than 20 feet. Usually, it was around 5 feet. Hard to see value in a dot at 5 feet.

I agree. Im former small rural town low crime rate LE. Most our arrests were for someting that was already investigated and warrant issued . Felonies and unfortunately the dark intolerable behind closed doors stuff. No red dots on pistols at the time. Had them on rifles but with poor battery life. The Eotech was actually the long battery life option. I think for LE they're worth the money and trouble of getting into and the public should pay for them. The job is literally looking for trouble and then to do something about it. But for concealed carry ive run into a problem with using one aside from the cost and training needed. It makes the the taller and harder to conceal. I could hide my Beretta 92FS easier than my Glock 48 with the RMRcc on it. My duty now is to mind my own business and avoid trouble and to only act if I morally cant afford to not act or to save my life. I saw two guys shooting at each other in a grocery store parking lot while getting gas. They both sucked at shooting, had shitty guns, and looked the part. I didn't have to nor did i want to do anything about it. Also decided to not bother 911 with something they were already aware of several times. I watched and continued getting gas. It was a good distance away where a red dot would be nice. If i were a cop still i would probably have to address that deal. They both ran when the sirens got close to. Which is what i was staying and watching for. Albuquerque NM police. They get into a lot of shootings. Good department. Leave people alone unless they're victimizing people then they arrest and fuck you up if you resist. They're pretty badass to but i was denied of seeing it in action. But LE and concealed carry for civilian arent the same situation. Civie concealed carry itbis super rare to be disarmed and killed when your gun becomes our gun. Uniformed LE that is a big problem and has been for a long time. Of course you have those who say thats becaue the cop sucked at their job and dont know that a gun can be used from a distance and isnt a knife. Which would be the case if you could just shoot everyone you're about to put cuffs on before hand. For officer safety of course. A lot of the gear is cross compatible. I think both should have good gen3 night vision. Both should have combat rifles, body armor etc.. i dont keep any restraints on my SHTF gear. People can run away and consider me no longer aggressive or they can push it and see how i react when i get scared in that situation. There are just a lot of mission tools and techniques that are even essential for one but a really bad idea, not just or even legally but for survivability depending on what you do. But if you really think you need it you should probably get it. Or even if you just want it badly. I think where LE may have made a bad equipment mistake based off what is common with civie concealed carry is dumping .40&W for 9mm. Shooting through auto body for a cop is very likely if they get into obe to begin with. .40 is better for that . Concealed carriers are more likely to encounter construction material. Sheetrock, wood, metal siding and the idea is not to send lead throug that. I love 9mm. Ive carried 9mm, .40, .45ACP on duty. I didnt have the latest and greatest 9mm. But it was +p+ Federal. I shot a car with all three. Junk car for testing .40 was the clear winner. .357 mag and 10mm was also impressive. Personal guns from another cop in the area that wanted to shoot a junk car. 5.56mm 55gr FMJ was also pretty good. I used a M1A for a patrol rifle but after that switched to a AR for the convenience. Going to the smaller caliber made sense in that case. Also im sure being a inner city ghetto cop is different than what i did when it comes to gear and training. Call to call preplanned shift can be just completely why you became a cop as well as making you wish you never considered the profession from day to day as much as not getting a single call all week long for even some civil shit you cant do anything about even if you wanted to or more often dont want to.

@@jodylivengood4061 Long post but very well thought out. You make some excellent points. I was in very good shape as a cop competing in endurance sports. Two years ago I nearly died from a widow maker heart attack. Four other officers I worked with have had heart attacks. One of them, who had been a Marine, died from one while hiking. All of us were in good shape. The thinking is the constant adrenaline dumps take a physical toll on the body. Makes sense. Let me point out one difference in rural versus urban policing. I could summon a small army when everything went to shit. A rural cop can come upon a very bad person but their sole backup could have a long response time which creates problems. I hope readers not your admonition against getting involved in situations that don't directly involve them. Ain't my circus; ain't my monkey.

6 years in the Marines and over 15 years as a cop.
I’m not opposed to red dots on my pistol. I see it as the natural progression of things, just like when i enlisted we shot iron sights and by the time I got out were running ACOGs.
My thing is this: I have tens of thousands of rounds and reps doing this. I’m very comfortable and good with my iron sights. I don’t want to change. Same reason I like carrying a 45 on duty. Not because i dislike 9, or think a 45 is so much better; but I have been shooting a 45 well for years and it got me through some rough situations and I don’t see a need to change.

This is the exact exception to the rule I spoke of in the video. You know you don't have the time, energy, or want to put in the work to become proficient with a dot on your handgun and there is nothing wrong with that. you see and know the benefits of the dot but know you won't be proficient on it. The folks that just crap on the dot but either have no time on one or even worse they won't admit they don't' want to train it. I have infinitely more respect for a guy that just can tell me yeah i know it's better but I'm not going to put in the work. It's like when we have a cop that's afraid of getting into a fight, so they escalate when they don't need to or just don't show up. but won't admit it because they'll get made fun of. I'll take a guy that knows his limits and can work within them all day over someone who doesn't know limits or worse lies about them

My first was a 508T. Second was some crappy one I needed to put on a pistol to sell it. Third was a Steiner MPS. Fourth was a Cyelee Wolf Pro. The only carry pistol I have without a dot at this point is a Reflex, which will get one sooner or later, but right now I have a course coming up and ammo to buy for it so other expenses have to wait. The 508 and MPS are both rock solid. So far the Wolf Pro is good, but time and two days of training will give me some more data on that. The way I think of the transition challenge is this - when we shoot irons we have that reference throughout the draw, so we become dependent on that visual cue. With a dot, that visual cue is gone and our brain starts to panic trying to find the dot as we present. The shift in thinking that worked for me was looking at how horseback archers shoot with zero visual reference to their bow or arrow. We have other feedback systems in our bodies that we can train to give us the information we need, and when we train those systems to present a pistol (in any position...) that dot just appears when it's needed. I use point shooting drills to do this. Maybe there are other, better ways to do it. If so, I'd love to hear about them.

Red dots are like shot timers to me. I have not had any use or need for one but theyre not stupid and will do their intended purpose. I only have one experience with one. RMRcc. It came with the gun, Glock 48 MOS. That is not a good dot for the beginner. Small window. It also made a thin otherwise concealable gun print due to height added. It was on a plate. If i kept it I would probably have it direct to slide milled and mounted. I also got NV at the same time. Now that is where a pistol red dot is really cool. But my use with NV pistol is a Beretta M9A1 with a suppressors. Langdon tactical is the way to go for RDS on a Beretta 92 but they dont so the RMRcc cut and i can see why. The SRO is still thinner than the slide on that gun. Also that gun is already in my hand if i have to use it for anything serious and finding the dot, especially under NV is easy then. I traded the RMRcc for a used Aimpoint T2 with very little extra money on top to put on my AR after deciding the Glock 48 is cool and unique from other pistols but not what i was looking for. Previously carried a Gen 2 Glock 23. Had that for 12 years as a CCW. Ended up with a Walther P99 AS. Its been more reliable than the 48 and DA/SA is what i like best. Got a bunch of shield mags with the Glock and there have been issues. I just use the 10rd factory mags whenever i use it now. Which sucks because that was a big reason why i went with a 48. It shoots nice though. Better than that 23 did anyway. The main point is get a good quality dot, RMRcc had no problems in that area, and get one that is to your skill level. If you get a good dot and it turns out you wish you didnt it will be easy to sell or trade. When I was whoring around the gun shops looking to trade for something would rather have every one of them wouldnt take one unless it came on a gun traded in or a Trijicon RMR, Aimpoint ACRO and only the P2, or Leupold Delta Point Pro. The RDS on a pistol is a big cheat, in every way. But its one you earn with the expense involved and the training needed. It is not even close to learning how to use one on a rifle. If youre new to pistol shooting and can afford it you should definitely get one. Ive seen one new shooter after another pick up the pistol RDS skills right away and just as many experienced and legit BMF iron sight shooters struggle with it and give up on them or have to take the slow bus to get good with it. But for your concealable pistol you are potentially making it not good for that by adding one as well as it being really the one gun you use that really has no need for one. But hey, I carry a DA/SA because i want pull and fire and no manual safety but after round 1 im in a gunfight so i want easier trigger mode. But i also may need to initiate or respond with a shot where a SA trigger is highly beneficial. That is super unlikely on top of the situation being for the most part unlikely. DA/SA takes some extra work when it comes to being good with a DA trigger and remembering to decock the gun when some shit just went down, but it makes me more comfortable to have that. I started handguns with a revolver so DA wasn't a problem for me. Put that in a 1911 only all day every day for anything thay requires being shot shooters hand and you will see things unravel quick and that's with those who can do some amazing things with that 1911 on top of that. RDS on pistols are the same way. They're a good thing to have available for a lot of reasons mentioned in this video and a few more. But it's expensive and requires training and for some of us extensive, embarrassing even if nobody sees you, the worst kind of embarrassment, retraining. Possibly for no good reason depending in your situation. One type of gun where i think they're nothing but a postitve is handguns that are using more powerful cartridges to really take advantage of the extended range the pistol red dot gives you. Like 6".357 revolver, Glock model 40, things like that. Even with 9mm its super easy to hit even small targets at 100 yards. If thats a requirement with your carry pistol for some reason thay is the way to go.

That's just an issue with shit quality batteries. A majority of red dots come installed with shit batteries. Batteries for red dots have been heavily tested, and you just need to get the quality ones. For coin cell batteries for pistol optics, Duracell is the only way to go. Energizer coin cells are known to fail from the force of the reciprocating slide. For CR123's, Panasonic is the way to go. Panasonic is the only company making CR123's outside of China, and the Chinese ones are junk. Some of Duracell's and Energizer's CR123's are made by Panasonic, but some of them are made in China. You just need to look for "Made in the USA" on the package, as Panasonic is the only CR123 manufacturer in the US. Surefire and Streamlight CR123's are also just rewrapped Panasonics. It's best to just get the originals (Panasonic), though, since they're cheaper (~$1 apiece online)

@uncleFreedom, I have to eat crow. In a previous video you where talking about how much ammo it takes to bound away and disengage and I did not believe you. I ran a test, I went into the hay field and set up qty. 6 double stack of hay to simulate my cover. From the first piece of cover to "safety" was 82.5 yards. For safety and price of ammo I used an airsoft gun and I loaded up 150 "rounds" I approached the first bale and about 10 yards away I mythically "received contact" and I bolted for the first cover and returned fire and proceeded as how I understand to bound. At the end I was way more winded than I thought I was going to be, slipped once and I had 38 out of 150 that I started with. I need to rethink my training plan and mag count because I sucked.

These small service caliber guns are the worst kind of gun for beginners who look at guns like we look at fire extinguishers. I used to work in a gun shop and every part time Fuddster suggested those to these people as well as the annoying 70 year old customer with no life thinking hes gonna get somewhere with the hot 24 year old female buying her first gun. I put a stop to that shit when i became the sales manager. Getting too many returns and new shooters expressing theyre now tried it out but not for me shooters over it. Also had way too many "you need to start with .22lr single shot rifle and maybe in a few years get something bigger" said to someone who has just been added involuntarily to the crime statistics. I always recommend a good double stack 9mm pistol or a 4".357 revolver and if you can afford it to get both and when you require something smaller to not get rid of it or either. When you put .38 special in a S&W 686 there is no discomfort shooting it by anyone who can hold a handgun and pull the trigger. Glock 17/19, USP, 92FS, 5906, P226 all good reliable stuff that we always had new and used for good prices. Wheel guns back then were also cheap unless some kind of early S&W or Colt SAA. Pythons at the time were always under $1000. So the fill size revolver thing is probably not as enticing financially anymore. New ones built in the US are usually pricey and used ones are already in the collections of those smart enough to not pass up Pythons under $1000. But the 9mm double stack pistol availability is incredible now and Glock is not the only game in town for lighweight, consistent trigger, no decocking needed after traumatic experience, pistol anymore. They also have DA/SA poly pistols now. I think the service full size 9mm pistol is also really good for someone who just found themselves in a situation thats making them regret not going down the AR15 rabbit hole. If its a guns for me but not for the anti gun covid panic buyer then fuck em. In fact that's who should get the single shot .22lr treatment. But i have a few friends who didnt own guns, covid hit, Summer of 2020 and decided to get a gun. One male and one female. Neither anti gun and thought it was cool and interesting that i was into them. The female is considerably younger than me and boy crazy and wanted come with me to the gun store for the high dude count. Everyone assumed she was my daughter and didnt make moves or they were as old as her grandfather when we addressed each other by our names instead of "babe" or "honey" or "maple syrup" and it was clear she wasnt my woman. So it didnt work. Told her to go in there by herself. She likes attention. But thats who im talking about. The male friend had a bad experience with guns. His friend, also a novice, bought a Mosin Nagant. They took it out and shot and it hurt the both lf them. He decided he wasnt tough enough for guns. This guy can kick most peoples asses easily. Hes big, skilled, and will unload on a smaller guy like he is the smaller guy. So I guided them both into shooting. Male friend was scared to shoot an AR because of the $80 Soviet surplus. Tried it finally and said it felt like his old pellet rifle only louder. The mosin nagant was also done with no ear pro. However neither has purchased any more guns and only practice when i call one or both up to ask if they want to go with me. But the guns are fire extinguishers to them and there are a good amount of people like that. Anti gun only when it comes to them and at the most limited number of guns personally but fine with anyone stacking them. Ive had a lot of non gun owners ask me what the big deal is about how many guns you own and cant figure out why a few is cool but large numbers of them by a single person are now a threat to society. Often mentioning that even if the gun collector went off the rails they onlym have 2 hands and a limited of weight they can carry. I have to explain that those pushing it at the voter level dont even know why. Its because you can arm your neighbors and friends who dont have but need guns and you need friends and neighbors with guns. In an SHTF scenario that isnt chem/bio/nuclear that the police cant handle. For example when those pushing these laws cross the fucking line emboldened by their own propaganda and sense of high moral clarity. Its those who should get bad gun advice. We should probably be a little willing to take the time to set up the beginner and even the former anti gunner. Look at Tulsie Gabbard. Never a big time anti gunner to begin with. But there is a refusal to to accept her aftet her credible and common explanation as to why she previously thought the way she did and now beleives that was a mistake. We shouldnt be afraid to convince and win someone over. Especially over this matter. Gate keep when its appropriate or even deny if we can. But red carpet open arms here is your copy of the key when we have a genuinly reformed or on our side in spirit or at the least never against us wanting the pew pew. The easiest thing to spot for any of us would be someone faking the interest in firearms or someone who beleives only they are someone to be armed but need you to further their knowlege. Those assholes will quickly say something strongly indicating that. You cant hide the fact you look down on someone when youre proud of it and assume they would never even question why you do since its obvious to anyone.

I use a green laser beam due to the platform (M9A4) and i like it alot. Fast draw, both eyes open, shots land where the beam is. I have a dot on my pcc and i can see some advatage of having a red dot (bright sunlight and longer distance). However, i can pull the laser off the M9 and put it on any other pistol with a pic rail in seconds which is the only thing holding me back from getting a dot for my FN510. The laser is also integrated with a white light, rechargable and half the price of most dots... so im still on the fence for now.
Also, if i miss the on switch during the draw and have no beam on target it adds about 1 sec to transition to irons. That could be a con depending on your perspective.

Im starting to think open emitter is when you use one of these on a home defense long gun. Seems any kinds of holstered pistol , LE, Concealed carry, has the potential to get something in there. Even a purpose home defense pistol is not stored muzze up and could be an issue. Now that i think about it i wonder how many mini red dot equipped carbines and shotguns ended up that way because of the work and expense involved in getting good with one on a pistol. When i decided against putting in the work and ammo to get good with one thats what I was going to do. Put it on my HK sp5. But it was a RMRcc and there was no mount for it. So i traded i for an Aimpoint T2 for my AR. I never got a optic for my HK either. If were to get one now it wouldnt be one you usually see on a handgun either. Plus my home is small and that gun has really good iron sights. But you can see how the open emitter thing wouldnt be an issue on that type of firearm for that purpose. The closed emitter models are way too big for a ccw pistol. That was my main complaint with the RMRcc. Made a small pistol a big pistol. Glock 48 printed more than my Beretta 92.

The red dot training and moving back to irons argument is something I use all the time. And its even better when we are at a gun range and I end up outshooting them on irons with their own gun in speed and accuracy. I've flipped quite a few people to the dot side due to that. You really do end up faster in all facets with pistol. It does take time, and thats just something the shooter needs to accept.
An example of a non-convert is my brother who has a busy job with two new kids. Hes excellent with irons and doesnt have the time to dedicate to learning good red dot motion.

Helpful Tip: Holosun EPS, 508T, 509T (RMR Footprint with an extra plate from Holosun) do not work on Glock MOS Plates. Buy a CH Precision and don't complain about it. The screws from Holosun are NOT long enough to get through that super thick plate from Glock. Just because its OEM Glock, does not mean its the best option...
Another one: Smith and Wesson polymer plates are nice that they come in the box on some models but do not stay put when that slide gets nice and hot (Casual shooters should be fine but NOT A DUTY/LIFE DEPENDENT GRADE OPTION). Should be self explanatory but I cannot tell you how many ignorant shooters try to send it back to SW/Optics Company thinking the plate/optic is defective.

However, in a very short time, I was shooting better, and more accurately with the dot than with irons. I have since put dots on my Sig P365XL and Sig P320 XTEN. I’ve found that red dots on pistols are wonderful, but unlike rifles there are some cons/considerations you have to make . 1) It adds some complexity to holster choices especially concealed carry. Not a big deal but it’s something. 2) Unlike long guns where this just happens naturally, it takes a significant amount of training to target focus & superimpose the dot with a pistol. It’s burned into my brain to focus on the front sight and look for that on the draw. It’s easy to lose the dot on a pistol & your presentation has to be perfect for it to appear. For that reason alone, I require a cowitness with irons as I just don’t have the time or willingness to train out of that. Just my 2 cents.

Red dots on pistols work great for me for awkward position shots and is a godsend for longer distance shots. To match my speed or be faster with just a dot & no front sight reference would require a significant training investment to unlearn and do it differently. You will never see the full benefit or speed with that method think of it as training wheels. See if you can find a reddot class and I highly encourage you to watch. @sagedynamics developing point of aim with RDS on UA-cam. It's exceptional

Red dots are better in every way possible, except cost. Most people are running a $400-$500 gun, and it's hard for people to justify dropping that same amount on an optic when they could go buy 2,000 rounds.

In HEAVY rain a dot is not always the best option. Same in mud.......but most people don't encounter that. However- if you do these are considerations FOR SURE. One thing you said that is 100% true is a dot will improve your iron sighted shooting. You can improve overall fundamentals, a dot is great for most things if you already have yourself squared away. Rain and mud.....those are considerations. I use both, love both. I think every serious shooter should do the same, just my two cents.

I will say that people that haven't shot should learn with iron sights first. If you try to learn from nothing with a dot it will be extremely discouraging and difficult. If you train with iron sights enough you are presenting the gun to the same point every time and when you transition to a red dot (which is better) you won't have a problem finding/losing the dot

I'm sorry but I completely disagree with this statement. As UF stated, you have to invest the time and effort, just like we all had to do with irons, it's just a different version of the same skill set. It's easier for people to keep track of a single point of focus... think the reason we have first focal plane scopes... same kind of concept.

Also the Chinese people arent CCP. Unless you just dont like Chinese people or Asian in general. Im half Korean and grew up around a lot of them and could see why you wouldnt. So its not a lame "you must be racist" accusation. The only ones i like are Vietnamese people. Considerably more down to earth people. My mom had a Korean female friend who was much older than her. Married to a rich white guy. Looked good for a 60 year old lady though. Total bitch though. Thought she was really superior to not only White, Black, Brown people, other Asians, but also any other Korean. She said something that pissed me off. I was 10 or so. Mom had a hair salon. Korean community hang out for real. This lady was always in there doing something that ended up with her getting a $200 bill at the end from my mom. They also all went to the Korean Baptist church. For social reasons mostly. I hated that church but i was made to go and my dad said when i become an adult i can not go there anymore just like he didnt go there. Lady actually said something about my grandmother, the Korean one. She lived with us and is the nicest most awesome lady i ever met and was super good to me at that time. Just turned 100 the other day but back in Seoul now. So i spread a rumor that she was a collaborator for the Japanese during WW2 and later for the communist in North Korea. That i overheard her telling my mom this when she got drunk . She actually moved to California several years before WW2. I told a lady who loved to gossip and she delivered. She also never said where she heard it. Everyone asked my mom about it. My mom of course said that conversation never happened. But people always told my mom their personal stuff in there and she never repeated it to others so it was assumed my mom was keeping hair salon divulged secrets like she would do and has done for anyone asking. Lady i spread the rumor about blamed it all on someone there that was always talking shit about her. Who i also didnt like. But when the one the rumor was blamed on came to my mom and asked if that was really true with a sincere look on her face, my mom can spot a bullshitter, my mom figured out what happened. Because my grandmother started telling her how interested i was in Korean experiences during WW2 and how i wasnt the typical kid who didnt want to hear old people stories. My mom asked what we talked about and my grandmother told her that she was telling me about collaborators and what despicable pieces of shit they are and no different than Jews enforcing rules in the camps in Germany. How they're the root of North Korea being the way they are. My grandmother told me of seeing a few of them get shot in the head after the Japanese were kicked out. They expected to be coming along for a new life in Japan and Koreans were fine with that as long as they GTFO. ButJaps didnt take them. There were from my grandmothers neighborhood and particularly horrible. Snitching off people to the occupiers while not doing so in fear and often not even true. She was always somber about witnessing the horror of war. But not with that story. She thought it was funny when a piece of brain flew into the mouth of the guy next to him about to get shot. The executioner told one of them that it was his lucky day and not going to die then laughed and shot him anyway. One of his sisters was forced into prostitution and later killed for refusing to do some nasty shit so he was in that kind of mood with these guys. But my mom nevet wanted to take me to that church again after that. I really juat wanted to tell that funny yet dark story. As well as prove i wasnt getting all Democrat on you with a lame claim and same old blame glame accusation of racism. I also like trijicon. Super expensive but satisfied with what i got. Got a Ta44 1.5x. Kind of a weird one. But i shot a rifle with one on it and became one of the few that would use something like that and even pay for it.

One other thing to consider is making sure either you know what you are doing mounting your dot, or whomever is mounting it for you knows what they are doing. Mounting a dot isn't just throwing the plate on, then screwing down the dot... there's a lot more you have to do to make it reliable and repeatable! Plus you have to maintain the device.
