This channel is all about TMJ disorders - what they are, how they manifest, what to do about them and how they relate to other issues that may be going unnoticed in the body such as tongue tie, sleep apnea, ADHD, and more! I will also be posting about being a dentist and a working mommy to two wonderful children. Thank you and I hope you enjoy my videos!
Thank you so very much for this wonderful information !! I’m overweight by 20 - 30 pounds and I need to get down to about 230 - 220 pounds . I’m at about 235 - 240 pounds . My goal is about 215 - 210 pounds !!
You’re welcome and best of luck to you!
Eat is always advised 😊
Always!
I have excruciating pain if I eat anything hot or warm. I am in so much severe pain... worse than childbirth.
I’m so sorry to hear that!
@@theTMJdoc Thank you so much....I have a call into my doctor and I am hoping perhaps he can send me to a specialist. Your videos are so important.
I hope you’ve found help! Thanks for your kind words!
Dr. Priya,
I like your informative Video on TMJD: To Eat or Not to Eat.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for this! I have been having chronic pain for 3 days now and have to take pain relievers that my dentist prescribed whenever I can’t take the pain any longer.
Sorry to hear this! I hope you are well soon!
Thank you so much for all your tmj videos! I completely agree with your list of foods to avoid
You're welcome! Glad you agree :)
I got diagnose with tmj it went away but it came back worse then ever. Im even dizzy. My jaw is in extricating pain along with ear aches
SOrry to hear that!
I have pretty bad TMJD flare up right now and I've resorted to blending my food since I need to eat alot to maintain my muscles.. Sucks but I need to eat!
yes, you need to get your nutrients to heal!
I have reduced eating too due to tmj and feel weak nowadays
Sorry to hear that!
So I have to give up my beloved bagels and drink less coffee 😭. But gotta do it.
It will likely help! 🙏🏼😊
Thanks for sharing your videos with us this is really a blessing for us ❤️

For me it’s the jaws BUT the teeth also, they’re permanently sensitive so I can’t eat hard or crunchy stuff and at times I have to go on a full liquid diet.
Sorry to hear this!
Hi love all your information thank you for sharing. Do you know any TMJ specialists in Gilbert Az? I need one to get a new night guard made.
Thank you,
Mary ps I’ve been doing your exercises they really help:)
I’m so glad the videos are helpful! I don’t know anyone in Gilbert, AZ - sorry!
Hi mary
To avoid sugar as well like cakes? I love them 😭
Not forever! Just during a TMD flare..
Thankyou so much doc🙏
You’re welcome! Please be sure to Subscribe 🙏🏼💝
I like the way you say "angry muscles"... You speak really well.
Dr Priya, could you please specify around how many litres of water should we drink? Especially the ones having TMJ disorder..
Regards....
8 cups a day.
Exellent presentation
Thank you!
What about popcorn
Probably not the best
Is having sugar in moderation okay? Or do you have to avoid it your entire life with tmjd..
In moderation is fine!! :)
Thank you for this video. Do you think pita bread would be considered okay because it’s a thinner, less dense bread like bagels, etc, or should I avoid bread altogether?
I literally just made homemade pita bread yesterday, and now I don’t know what to do😂
Hi doctor. I am from NJ I been dealing with TMJ issues for awhile. It went from clicking/ popping sound to crepitus. As you can imagine it’s very frustrating. I have tried a mouth guard that was made for me and it worked for awhile but I obviously I have this problem still going on.that Suggestions on what to do? I’m also going to PT to see if that will help. Thanks!
you're welcome and I hope you find relief!
Hey doctor I need your quick advice tomorrow my closest person has plan a meal for me so we were going on a place which has pizzas, soft garlic bread and pasta so
I can eat doctor
I’m sorry but I can’t give you advice over the internet and without examining you in person!
Thanks for this video, my doctor prescribed me a liquid diet for a week, has been really hard, do you think is necessary or can I get better just by eating soft food? Is this diet forever? Am I never going to be able to eat nuts, raw veggies, etc..? :(
Since I haven’t examined you myself, it’s probably best if you follow your doctors advice. :). You should be able to eat tougher foods once the TMJD is taken care of.
How are u now? Did u get better? Are u still on soft food diet?
@@user-fq2rj1kg8r Thanks for asking, I'm doing better, I got botox y it helped tons, but it's temporary, I just followed that diet for a week and I have had normal meals, I just try not to overload my TMJ with a lot of hard foods.

Hi Dr.Mistry, I have been suffering from very bad facial pressure every SINGLE DAY since the past 2 & 1/2 months, it gets so intense at times I can feel my face and jaw constricting, went to a ENT at first thinking it’s related to sinus but have been on their treatment regimen since a month and there has not been any progress whatsoever. I stumbled upon TMJ and found your videos !
Could TMJ start slower and build up over months? Cause my symptoms were somewhat bearable first and progressed …
Can TMJ cause pressure on the forehead (like tension headache but x10times more painful) and behind the eyes?
Love your videos, Very informative and easy to understand without going too much into medical terms !
Appreciate it a lot !
Sending my love from India 🤗 keep doing the amazing work 😊
yes TMJ can cause pressure in the forehead and behind the eyes and it can build up over months.
@@theTMJdoc ahhh, it is sooo painful and constant ! Ended up going to the ENT thinking it was allergies/sinus... just found out it might be issues with TMJ from the ENT herself.
Your videos are very informative..I gave myself all the massages you have recommended and I already felt 10% better ..though the pain came back 😫😞.
Thank you so much for replying 🥰 appreciate your channel soooo very much !
Hey, where are you residing in india? I could help
Same in my case tooo
Thank you so much for your video! How long do you advise to stay away from chewy foods?
That can really vary from person to person and depends on the severity of the TMJD issue. Sorry I can't answer more specifically.
@@theTMJdoc OK. Thank you for your response.

Hello thier I enjoyed the video. I got my orthotic splint which lines the top middle line of my teeth with the bottom. I told the dentist about jaw manipulation. I showed him your channel...I noticed My left side that when I pushed gently would make a crunch sound. That is getting better. However. As I mentioned my cartilage has started to grind together when I swallow on the left side of my throat. I went for test about 4 months ago and My food was going into my stomach. So after about 3 weeks with this new orthotic. noticed when I eat my through would feel more tense. Like theirs more pressure around my Adams apple and right at the bottom of my throat I keep thinking I am getting Dysphagia. It rely is a bad felling and now I feel the food staying in my throat a little. Then it goes down slow .I hope I am just panicking. I am scared to keep the splint in now. I am using my night one but might stop using that also. I don't know if I should just keep using the splint and eat way less because I did eat a lot for 4 days in a row. I only at a little today and it wasn't good. I was hoping that if I keep the splint that the symptoms would clear up and with hard work get myself swallowing normal again. I also had a aura migraine attack 2 week prior to my orthotic and my vision is not the same. I am going to se a doctor for that also. I am discouraged and the doctors here are not like in USA.I just don't no if I should continue treatment. I have been waiting so long for this. It always seems to be a trade of. It seems to be healing that crunch on my left side. Where I push on my left tmj and around that ear was always sore and swollen in the mri. Well I no tmj can effect many things. I don't no if others experience this with thier orthotic ?It always seems to be a trade of. Like my last dentist with the orthotic sixth that we used to eventually put crowns after my bit was better. That made pressure worse in my head and back of it. The pressure that was being mad worse went away. When I took it of I felt pretty good for about 2 weeks. It fixed some things like when I would talk the tightness would build so greatly it was unreal. Now its just the pressure in my teeth and that itself is better ass well. I am hoping that its the same with this one. Its always a trade of .I don't no if I leave this in and it heals everything but makes other symptoms worse while its in. When i wore a 30 dolor mouth gard the pressure in my face would go away 80% but then gradually go into my neck 80%. and vise versa when off. Maybe this is the same way.. Then it will leave when out. I no thier scare tissue that must have healed wrong before and is pulling on things but not sure. Do you no of.. DrJimMcCarty?. I wont send a long message again but its hard to explain in a short story
I'm sorry I don't know of Dr. Jim McCarty. I'm not sure what to tell you about your swallowing problems as this is not a symptom I encounter frequently.
@@theTMJdoc I talked to a doctor in American he treats this with injection. common treatment is to inject a small amount of Marcaine into the ligamentous portion of the anterior digastric at the anterior inferior border of the chin (tip of the chin). This modality often improves TMJ difficulty swallowing of food, liquids and even saliva. Cheek it out if your interested. I no you like to geek out with this stuff lol. www.michiganheadandneck.com/tmj-throat-tightness/.Also This doctor heals many tmj patients' wish every tmj doc and dentist would no teach each other. This would catapult tmj treatments...

@@chipper23100 oh wonderful thank you!!!! I’ll look into this!
I can say I understand the feeling of food going down and getting stuck but I think it’s muscles that are tight. The more I do my tongue exercises the worse that feeling gets so pretty sure it’s muscles. We’re you checked for a tongue tie?
Also I feel you on the vision thing it’s weird!
You are beautiful i forget my pain during watching your beautiful smile and body language now i believe i will be oky in few days
Thank you for your kind words.
Omg I feel like my last teeth
Is this a question?
Dr. If my mouth is not stuck full open and full close is it mean my tmj not dislocated ?
Actually the pain is very low i ignore it but the passage of time between 10 to 12 days my right side joint is very painful even i can't eat (chewing) properly food but my mouth still open properly and close but little bit pain when i was close to hard and open little bit extra please tell me what can i do i am to much worried about my joint
I'm sorry but I cannot tell you about your specific condition over the internet and without examining you. Please see a TMJ dentist or TMJ physical therapist for further evaluation and diagnosis. Good luck!
Hey....I had lower teeth fillings last year...since then I'm having tmj...does uneven or incorrect fillings be the root cause of TMJ?
It could be the reason but but staying open for a long period of time is usually more linked to the onset of tmjd.
@@theTMJdoc it happened for me a few years ago. I wonder why it's never been healed and I am still suffering from TMJD?
Can liquid food such as porridge, soup, fruit juice, be considered as water?
Still good but there’s nothing as hydrating as water in my opinion 😊
I started to notice I had pain in my jaw whenever I would eat. I went to the dentist and it turns out I have my wisdom teeth growing in horizontally and I’m not sure if this TMJ related pain will go away once they’re out. Is it likely they will?
It's impossible to say without examining you in person. Sorry.
My nose would run constantly when I eat could this be related to tmj?
No I don’t think so
These videos are great. I'm up in Tacoma and may come to see you if my TMJ pain doesn't go away. My dentist recommended the Gentle Jaw, what do you think?
I don’t think that stretching the jaw, which is what the Gentle Jaw protocol is, is a good idea when you’re in pain.
@@theTMJdoc My pain started last November after a wisdom teeth extraction surgery. It was horrible muscle pain for months, finally got better in late March. Was pain free from then until a couple weeks ago when I think I started straining my jaw muscles again when I started lifting weights. It was mild pain and managable. After a dentist visit where my jaw range of motion was extremely small I started using gentle jaw (been on it for a few days now). My pain (which was on my right side, underneath ear, I think one of the pterogoids?) has been reduced by a lot and my range of motion is increasing a ton in only a few days! Just thought I'd share with you my story so far. Thanks for the great videos.
@@droidean oh good!!! I’m so glad it’s been helping!
@@theTMJdoc Thank you! My only theory is how maybe I was overworking tight muscles that needed some stretching to loosen up a bit. Kind of like joggin on tired and tight legs? Not sure. I will still be using some of the techniques from your videos, as well. :)
I used the gentle jaw and it did help enough to feel like it was worth the money. I just only go as far as I can comfortably...
Can we use a juicer machine
yes!
Hey doc priya! I have visited and discussed my tmj issue with dental doctor. They adviced me neubrol forte and musidin sr 6mg .for 14 days. I don't want to use musidin . due to its side effects. can u plz suggest me. Pain medicine instead of that??
**Secondly I want to ask from u . I have done my opg x ray .all learnt from ur videos . One of my tooth 🦷 need filling on urgent basis. In tmjd issue as I discussed with u. Can I go for filling ?? Ur suggestion is imp for me tell me that I'll b waiting..
** third and last make video with pictures and mention what major problems patients face from tmjd and how long one can take to recover. sleep disturb pattern improvement tips also .
I'm facing lots of pressure on my neck n much more.. 😰😰
Hi there - I really don't feel comfortable advising you on medication since I'm not familiar with the meds you mentioned and since you are not a patient of mine. As for going in for a filling, it's best if you discuss that with your dentist. It's difficult for me to make the video you suggested because the "major problems" with TMJD are incredibly vast and varied and it can take from 1 month to a few years to recover.
If you wear a orthotic or night splint.
How long does it usually take for your jaw go back to normal position if you stop wearing it?
The orthotic typically does not change the position of your jaw permanently. It holds the jaw in a different position when wearing it.
@@theTMJdoc
Ok so if you stopped wearing any splint would it be about a week to change that position etc....sorry
@@michellewood7183 I’m sorry I don’t understand your question. A splint doesn’t change the position of your jaw. Just like prescription glasses don’t change your eyesight.. a splint holds your jaw in a specific position only when you wear it. As soon as you take it off it goes back to its regular position
@@theTMJdoc Yes that's what I wanted to know so how does the orthotic then if doesnt more your lower jaw how does it relief the inflammation from TMJ does it just help take pressure off jaw joints.
@@michellewood7183 it puts the muscles in their relaxed position for long enough to help the muscles get out of their pain/spasm cycle.
Can this be a temporary and minor condition if you have no teeth alignment or other issues? I don't hear the clicking sound in the jaw and it hurts less too sometimes but gets worse after I eat
It’s hard to say whether it’s temporary or minor without examining you in person. But it certainly could be..
Is there a cure for TMJ without surgery?
Yes! We rarely refer out for surgery.
@@theTMJdoc So can you do a video on what to do if your disc is out? How do you get it back in without surgery? This is what I am trying to avoid.
@@MsAlpacafarm I talk about how we treat this in my videos “Jaw Locked Closed” Parts 1 and 2. Please watch and lmk if you have any questions!

@@MsAlpacafarm good luck! Also do the muscle releases in my UA-cam playlist “tmj exercises and muscle releases”. Where do you live? Have you seen a tmj dentist?
Doc I have been having jaw pain since a week. Actually I opened my mouth a little wider and the next day I had the situation where I could barely open my mouth to speak. Gradually by eating soft food it started opening day by day. Now I can eat well but some days I have pain at the bottom of my jaw. Should I wait for few more weeks or see a doctor. Actually my family doctor asked me to wait for few days for it to heal on it's own.
I'd recommend seeing a skilled and experienced tmj dentist or tmj physical therapist
@@theTMJdoc thank you for replying doc. Your videos literally saved me from wisdom tooth extraction and I got my cbct done few days back. Actually the doc rated the condition 4/10 and advised me to get tens therapy and my sleep appliance. Should I consider it now or later? Actually I have financial issues and also I don't wanna wear the day device and then get braces 😫😫
Mam i am 19 year old male..
Due to my uneven teeth alignment only one of my masseter grown more which made my face asymmetric.
But just one month ago i started my braces treatment.
So my question is can my one side masseter shrink after my teeth regain their original position.
or simply if they came align again can my one side masseter reduce naturally?
It's really impossible to predict if the masseter will shrink on its own. I wish I had a better answer for you.
