This is wonderful I really hope I can learn to use it I think it could be really helpful for me in the future as I am deaf and my best friend is blind and he is interested in communicating with me better in the future as I can lip read really well but it still leaves a gap between us at times
Iim a hearing blind person who would love to learn PT. When I got my 4th guide dog who is my current, there was a deaf blind man also at the Guide Dog Foundation who was there getting his second dog. His first dog was from Leader Dog. Does anyone know how I can go about learning PT? I’m looking through videos on UA-cam. So far all I’m finding are informational videos like this one.
I'm a hearing and sighted person with limited knowledge so I can't say for sure, but it looks like they might be using normal asl, and the only difference is how the listeners are positioned and interacting with the speaker. Sitting together with knees touching, listener puts one hand on the speaker's signing hand and the other hand on the speaker's thigh to add backchannel emoting. It's the backchannel knee or shoulder touch that really seems to be key, and it's fairly simple. Sorry if this wasn't helpful, I'm am still looking for more info myself.
Hi @Alexis Rivas, I am a hearing-Blind ProTactile ASL Interpreter. I would say the best way to learn as a hearing Blind person is to attend in-person workshops, where you can directly feel ProTactile in action. Even if you have substantial usable vision, there are a lot of subtleties to PT that are easy to miss without having the touch component.
You know, I have a lot of Deaf friends and I have a lot of blind friends and I think protactile is a really cool thing but I’m way too autistic for this! Lol way too touchy feely…
thank you for encouraging the hearing community to not be afraid to communicate with y'all
This video is amazing and so informative!!

I think that just makes you the 'quiet' one in the group.
1:32 wouldn't that be ironic
Why is there no sound
I am utterly kidding btw
Think about it.
Lol immediately saw your joke. Made me laugh! Yea as a hearing person: "Why is there no sound?"
Thank you for explaining it so well! I’m learning ASL and I’ll make sure to learn protactile too
