Hi Astro, thanks for creating this. I love your vids. Unfortunately your calculation on distr draw per second migt be wrong. You conclude, a medium burst (listed wth 0.5 MW/s) would only have 1/6 of the medium beam. However, the given burst number is correct when the weapon is active = when the beam is emitted. Although the burst beams do not last for a second, they pull the distr energy in each burst. Thus, the medium burst distr per second is roughly (approximation for simplicity)i: 3.7 (RoF) x 0.5 (Distr draw) = 1.85 MW per sec. So the beam vs. burst vs. pulse comparison (all medium) would be: 3.16 MW/s vs. 1.85 MW/s vs.1.73 MW/s Also, these numbers are still misleading as they do not take into account the following: 1) Beams have higher armor-piercing and are therefore more capable of destroying internal modules like power plants 2) Beams (gimballed and turrets) appear to have a weaker gimballing algorithm, they are slower and sometimes even more sensitive to chaffs. Surprise is when using turrets, that bursts or pulses tend to hit more often. Players can benefit from that a bit, when engineering those. For example rapid fire burst turrets do almost the same DPS than beam turrets with much less distr draw and better hit rates. This is just an empirical observation and meant as example why players should not rely on the paper stats. It depends on your play style, piloting skills and ship type what works best. Kind regards from Germany!!! In case you want to connect in-game: My CMDR name is Apollo Prime
You know what You are absolutely right about that. I didn't think of that, but it make sense that burst laseres only draw power when active. Thanks a lot for letting me know. I have pined this comment to the top so other people will see it when they watch the video.

Some comments: In-game DPS is based of continuous time on target for 10 seconds. Beam lasers don't out damage pulse lasers until you've had about 6 seconds on target. Frag cannons have had dmg boosted vs small and medium sized ships, as of 2.1~2.2. Mag dumping a Frag on an Eagle or Viper will nearly strip shields. Frag cannons actual effective range is roughly
Dps.... damage per second. Not 10 seconds... per second. Which is 1/60 of a minute. Sustainable damage is dpm...damage per minute. Hope this helps you 🤭
Also railguns are definitely not hitscan. As a side note after its max range it still does damage but can miss the target* meaning its not a hit scan. Its a entity in the game files mate that has mass...which means also not hit scan 😋
Good video, thanks. I would like a video about the other weapons in Elite Dangerous; missile, torpedo, mines -- they are harder to compare so may have to be more of a Pros and Cons and guide on them, I imagine.
Nice breakdown. Lots of work went into this obviously, since for me anyway it's a bit of a pain to factor into everything when selecting weapons for some ships. Thanks so much for putting this together. Of course the engineering side of these weapons does some very interesting things to these stats.
Hey Astro, Thanks so much for making such informative videos. I have been playing over a year now and l still find so many things I didn't, know. You do a great job
I have a Python for fighting.. last night I was jumped by 2 ships.. one was a Krait the other fer de lance... I have only 5 beam lasers.. engineered out and the best you can get for the Python... I took both of those ships out in a matter of minutes..
@@zinta1 hmm yeah you are right i don't think they travel together, but i don't do much combat so i'm not entirely sure. It's great that you were able to destroy those gankers though. nicely done
I use the beam lasers, cannons (regular ones) and railguns rn, im not really sure if its efficient, most probably no, but god is that setup satysfying, hitting a railgun on a ship is great, and the cannon having a massive lead, big explosion and that sound is amazing, i wish there was a mod that would shake your ship when you fire it xd
solid video - sadly i think a lot gets left out in basic analysis - the stats on the burst laser and beam are especially odd since it's rather unclear on wtf the stats are referring to, and you kind of have to guess where the numbers are coming from and what they amount to. Thankfully there's videos out there of people shooting at ships until their capacitors run out and you can get a pretty good confirmation there. I'm guessing they weren't listing breach damage in this build when the video was made - but putting the numbers together reveals that there's a surprisingly large jump up in damage from pulse to burst when it comes to hull dmg - if you were looking at the raw dps number, you'd expect it to be about an 18% increase in dps, but it's actually more than double that, around 42% more dmg. This is consistent with the breach dmg being listed actually referring to a per shot dmg, and not the total breach damage of the 3 round burst... which is pretty frustrating given that the other damage listed on the weapon is in fact the combined dmg of the 3 round burst lol So my main take-away from all of this is that my Conda will get *considerable* benefit from switching out my large focussed pulses with large focussed bursts - as this will result in epic increases in hull dmg. That's a pretty considerable increase in power demand though, so I'm not sure how I'll find enough gigawatts to make that happen, but there's not much point in anything less than that. Will monster my powerplant and see how that goes I guess.
Hello, can you please tell me which one is tracking target to shoot? Gimbaled, turreted or Fixed??? I want to upgrade them to which can track and shoot the target. Thank you.

So on paper, rails look like the highest dps weapon in the game. But in reality they are the worst weapon in the game. As heat build up from multiple rail guns or follow up rail shots has not been taken in to account. I love using them, but the only thing they are good for as of 2.2.03 is ai wrecking you with 99.9% accuracy and cheater manoeuvring. They do fuck all against ai Shields or hull and just cook you. They need another balancing pass imo, and to be available in bigger hard point sizes.
+J C I agree that the heat from them are way to much to handle unless you only for 1. I would live to see them having the heat reduced a bit and to have larger sized rails. Maybe an small increase in reload time not to make them too OP
Down to Earth Astronomy Yeah. I think for huge size they should temporary increase power draw when charging to fire, meaning that you have set up your power groups correctly to stop your Shields or thrusters ect from going offline. It should completely drain your distributor (sys/eng/wep) and add a lot of heat. You should really have to think about if it's worth firing or not. But at the same time it should deal massive amounts of damage as it leaves you vulnerable after firing. Thanks for replying and putting out all these really helpful videos, I really appreciate it. If you ever need with testing anything, I would be more then happy to be at your disposable 07.
Actually I typically run an eagle with 2 rail guns and a multi cannon, and the heat is actually relatively manageable during conflict zones, paired with a heat sink( so long as you speed tank your eagle) it is a very good weapon to attack the larger ships with, only downfall is if you are engaged by fighter craft, since the rail guns do suck at hitting the little buggers.

It has. Values indicated are medium size ones, for comparison between weapons types.
