Hey Norms clarifying two things. 1) In Japan, the school year starts at the beginning of April (So that was Season 1) and the first semester ends around July (This episode). They come back in early September and go throughout the winter. 2) Shigaraki's motivation was always just to destroy what he didn't like, the attack on the USJ in season 1 was planned by All for One, and he was bummed when society recognized Stain over him, during this episode he realized he always did have a conviction in wanting to destroy the symbol that people put their hopes on (All Might) to show the world how pointless worshiping heroes is Also, Shigaraki's power doesn't turn on and off, it activates when he touches something with all five fingers (which is why his grip on Deku's neck was so weird)
U guys talked over the rest of Shigaraki explainin his conviction😭that’s part of the reason for your confusion but also u have to realize he never had a reason for his destruction he did it cuz it was fun. Now he’s doing it because he wants to show how much society relies on All Might and how fragile it is by taking out all might.
You have to listen closely to what Shiggy is saying. Even though there's somebody in the world at the very moment who is being hurt, people are walking around and smiling as if nothing could possibly hurt them. Shigaraki is disgusted at how people think "no matter what happens, All Might will save us." Society views him as an omnipresent safety net, not realizing that the net is very full of holes that could make the whole thing fall apart. All Might knows he's fallible. But the public don't believe it. In a sense, he is too good at his job to where it's made society a bit delusional.
I love the fact that Normies talk while the important dialogue is happening every fucking time, it's not even close to frustration to the point where I pull my hair out.

Lol, I remembered in fight with Kachan v2 he was wearing T-Shirt in which was written something like poop and original Voice Actors was making fun of Izuku's shirt.
It's the difference between "I want to kill All Might cause I hate him!" to "I want to kill All Might to change society!" One is more narrow minded than the other.
It's around this chapter that Shigaraki slowly started to become my favourite character in the series and the recent manga arc has only sped that along. It's here where it's made clear that the series is just as much about Shigaraki's growth into a competent villain as it is about Deku becoming a hero. With every instance of growth Deku gains, Shigaraki parallels him in both power and in the essence of what it means to be a villain.
@@KingMufasa_8 i was refering to this particular comment. I dont read manga so please dont spoil. I meant at this stage, shigaraki aint shiit. Maybe later he is strong or has something hidden up his sleeve. Dont spoil though

But then I discovered Normies and now I know why I will never watch shows in group. (I still love their reaction specially Avatar but its sad when they miss important details or misinterpret stuff)
Some may agree or disagree with his conviction but one you must admit is his growth as a character so much so that he can be considered the second protagonist
Shigaraki's not badly written. If anything, he's an excellent villain (some even say revolutionary). I look forward to you discovering why. Also, you guys should probably have not talked when Shigaraki was talking about knowing what drives him. That's why you get confused at times during these reactions. You hyper-focused on All Might and seemed to have completely missed the second half of that. That being exposing the fragility of society's sense of safety. And yes, it does make a huge difference now that he has a new drive and conviction, even if it's not immediately apparent to you.
Some may agree or disagree with his conviction but one you must admit is his growth as a character so much so that he can be considered the second protagonist
@Jordan Simeone motivation is not what makes a villain, he has his charisma deep inside his character but you're looking at it on surface level thinking that motivation is all a villain is about, which is heavily short sighted and ignorant smh, a one dimensional thinking process. There's much more layers, you're just looking at him on surface level, also, motivation is not what makes a villain, there are other aspects just as important and can make up for it or replace it. The layers are that, despite how crazy he is, or how insane on the look, ironically he's very rational and he often points out societal issues and flaws in hero society, just like in this ep, how the heroes aren't always right, the mistakes they made are the reason why the society is that rotten right now, his character directly reflects societal issues irl in modern society, even though his motivation isn't realistic or relatable or anything or grey (that's how people judge a villain's writing which is stupid af, one dimensional thinking process), but what he said and what he represents are on the grey area. I don't feel like typing essays here cuz my comment will be eaten and be sent to spam folder but you're not ready for the conversation.
@@ale2753 "all that", like it takes more than a minute to write a wall of text with a keyboard. People like talking about topics that interest them, big surprise.
The main issue is that the dub of the anime takes out a lot of context and nuance. Everything is a lot more one dimensional. Every character, moment, issue, and bit of growth. It's largely robbed of meaning. And the translation is so poorly handled that the careful word choice of the original script loses a lot of impact. This episode had a lot more weight in the original sub. Sucks this is the version they're watching.
can you guys start watching with subtitles or something, the fact that every comment section has paragraphs of text pointing out things you missed that were stated in the show, cos after you miss something important it throws the rest of the reaction off as you get stuck on the one thing.

Yes it’s first semester not year. Remember since this anime from japan. They’re basing it off the Japanese school system. If I remember correctly, my Japanese instructor mentioned that they start later compared to the American school system.
@@Shanequabumblebee It also why you see anime kids getting so much summer homework, becuse it in the middle of their school year and the coming back to same teachers who issued it.
About it being summer break already, the Japanese school year is different to the North American/European system. They start their year in spring, finish 1st semester by summer, have a 5-6 week break with homework, 2nd semester in fall to Christmas time, 3rd semester from the New Year to Spring. Get a small break before starting the next school year in spring. UA also has school 6 days a week (only Sundays off)
what changed for shigaraki is that he realized he has to stand by his ideals and convictions, he has to center his actions on them and actively work to make them a reality, not just be a passive actor in his own life. and no, japanese school years start in april, so they have a semester, summer, a semester, winter, a semester, spring, start of the next year.

@@hunterdonner9970 that's why I think they at least need one person who has seen and understood the show already to sit in with them and explain shit they miss.
Do not adjust your devices, folks - that whistling noise is not a mechanical fault, it's just the Point Of This Episode going shooting over their heads. One of the great points of MHA is that it's not just the heroes who go through development - the villains are on their own course of motivation, growth and evolution. Shigaraki has been lashing out directionlessly at hero society, motivated by his hatred but not actually comprehending it. In this episode, he begins to realise why he so strongly despises heroes, and All Might as the Symbol Of Peace at the top of that society. He begins to move with purpose, re-directing his energies to selectively knocking away the pillars that hold up hero society, aiming to bring it all crashing down: and now he knows where he's aiming.
Shigaraki just understood himself better is all. He was always pissed off at things but didn't understand why. He was a complete mystery to himself. This was just him going "Oooh, that makes perfect sense!" and understanding what it is he is about a bit better. Imagine a young teen not knowing how to deal with someone resorting to teasing and all that and suddenly one day a friend brings it up and they suddenly go "oh i like them!". I mean if you pay attention Uraraka is going through something like that right now. Coming to terms with her feelings and not even understanding them until she gets a little push from Lazer boy mc twinkle saber. Understanding your feelings and motivations and having them are two different things.
The misunderstandings of the plot on the normies' part are pilling up, it seems. Eventually they will be completely clueless about the simplest plot points, which will absolutely affect their enjoyment of the show. Just you wait.
It's funny because shonens have a habit of thinking that the viewer is too dumb to get anything hence why soo many overexplain everything. So even with the overexplaining they still can't get basic things that younger viewers could get.
@@RogueBlood343 I just hope they start taking our feedback to heart and start paying more attention instead of trying to cram in jokes during exposition
The reason why the episode was important for the villain was that before he was taking it as a game. That's why in season one he was saying things like "Game Over, All Might cheated and should have loss, etc" He simply now understands that he needs to have a conviction that matches Stain's when it comes to his goal. To no longer see it as a game, but a reality to do. And that will let him be a leader.
Imagine your reaction to Shigarki showing up in the mall if you hadn't looked at the title "Encounter" and were discussing before watching the episode. If you noticed, the title didn't show up until after it happened. I tried to warn you guys several times but whatever
Because everyone else explained the shigaraki stuff so imma explain that semester meant "semester" in Japan they run on a year long school system. So summer break is simply the cut off from 1st semester to 2nd semester
If there's one thing that's consistent with reaction videos, it's that any misinterpretation or misunderstanding is heresy and shall be purged with unholy fire and destruction.
I don’t know if you knew, but summer break in Japan is short (yet still there longest break, even though they still have assignments and extra curricular stuff) and it’s after the first semester. Winter break usually starts off the second semester, and spring break indicates the end of the third semester and the start of a new academic year, so when Midoriya said end of the first semester he meant 1/3 semesters lol.
unless funimation changes things up, they will dub the first several season 4 episodes on the same day they air in japan and then they'll revert to airing them 2 weeks later for the rest. if u want to wait for the dub, you won't have to wait very long. that said, season 4 doesn't even start until october. edit: also, consider watching the movie. it fits between seasons 2 and 3 and IS canon.

Shigaraki didn't have a singular focus before, he was all over the place, Despite him talking about killing all might BEFORE. NOW he DOES have a specific motive, an EXACT focus on all might
Shiragaki seems like a poorly written villain now because unlike villains in most other stories, he’s not a fully realized villain yet. MHA is about both the growth of the heroes as well as the villains. Before this ep Shiragaki had as much conviction to be a villain as Mineta to be a hero; that is, he did it just because. He’s not a strong villain now, because he’s not meant to be. You’re meant to see his actions and ideas now as juvenile and nonsensical, because they are.
Shigaraki has a great arc. We don't often see the villain get the protagonist treatment in terms of character development. I often find myself almost rooting for him to be the great villain he aspires to become.
Y’all really need to start paying attention and if you can’t even push yourselves to do that, you should just stop watching the show all in general. smh
Everybody here surprised at their stupidity. Where have you guys been during their AoS/HxH/American Gods/Rick and Morty/Community reactions. Most of the time they can't follow a simple plot nor do they get pop culture references or quick jokes. So many Rick and Morty jokes flew over their heads, no I'm not saying you have to be a genius to get R&M, it's a simple show to understand and they have the same problem with Community. Especially in the beginning they were so lost at the tropes/cliches that were being parodied. And with AoS they have no clue how to deduce something logical that's also pretty straight forward. Or they just don't get the point of a storyline... heck they even got a lot of trouble with understanding DBZA while claiming they are big DB fans. Nahid, Mickey and Mikey are constantly lost while that paraody makes amazing references about iconic plotlines.
No, no one is really surprised, people just were patient. We all knew and saw that they miss the easiest plot points. That they talk and try to edgy, espescially that one dude with the short hair, who tries to joke to show how smart he is but in the end it just shows, that he can't follow a plot made for 12 year olds. In season 3, Funimation put in special effort to keep the same-day dub until episode 11 for obvious reasons. As for season 4, judging by the trailers, Bones already finished the first half, which means the dub can keep the pace for many episodes.

21:14 Chris, that's a great topic for an MHA podcast. Just theorizing what normal things Class 1A would do like which stores at the mall they'd frequent or what music they'd listen to.
Regarding dubs and subs for MHA, they're usually aired simultaneously. Occasionally the dubs fall a bit behind cause of breaks or something, but there's not really much waiting. Unless you guys start doing more double drops for MHA, you'll only be half way through season 3 when season 4 starts, so the dubs are definitely gonna be available once you get around to s4.
For MHA the dub actually comes out either same day or close to it as the sub (I don't know for sure, since I watch the subs) but you guys can keep watching the dub, most likely. It's a really good dub, so you're not really missing out. That's not to say the sub isn't good, because I think the voices in the sub are fucking phenomenal, but the dub is genuinely good too, imo.
You guys keep talking over what Shigaraki's actual convictions are. Yes, he always wanted to kill All Might, but until now he had never really focused on why, he just knew he felt something was wrong. Now he's realized it's because All Might provides a false sense of security to people. He believes that no one is actually safe and that dozens of people could die at any moment. He hates how oblivious society acts to the real danger they're always in. He sees them as being smug in their ignorance.
simonO712 with “now”, do you mean where the normies are at, where the anime’s at, or where the manga’s at? At any rate, by the end of season 2 Shigaraki has already gotten a whole lot interesting, even more so with All for One referring to him as his “successor” and making clear the future parallels between Midoriya and Shigaraki. The Normies have all the available info to see that he’s evolving, they just choose not to see it. It’s quite sad really, and I hope they’ll think differently by the end of the next season.
I opened this UA-cam channel Because i have no gf oh yeah, that arc (though comparatively short) was amazing! Sadly I don’t think they’ll be getting there until season 5
A good analogy for Shigaraki's conviction is when water turns to ice. He always wanted to kill All Might, but he didn't know why specifically and was very chaotic about it. After Stain and talking with Deku, he finally figured out why he wants to kill All Might and what he needs to do to achieve that. A vague liquid idea became a stable solid plan. Water to Ice.
They just finished their first semester. In Japan school starts in Spring and ends in Winter. So their summer break is like our Winter break. It's a short break invetween semesters. They wont reach the end of their first year till season 6.
Summer break is when out Winter break would be. Each seasons doesn’t equal a semester so they can extend it more. If each season was a semester, it would end a lot quicker since the school is only 3 years
As someone who was homeschooled, I take a bit of offense at the "they're always off" comments. That aside, I always enjoy your group's reactions to MHA and look forward to season 3's. For season 4, why not just continue with the dub seeing as it's all but guaranteed to be simul-dubbed?
@@dtmt502 Actually, propably not...the dub will likely air at the same time again...cause some people already saw ep 1 (the dub version) in some convention or something...
I know this is 2 years old at this point but Deku Did something very smart when Shigaraki confronted him. All for one being his master was more of a very big theory they had no full confirmation till Deku asked Shigaraki about it and Shigaraki confirmed it 100% cause of that there is no longer room for any doubt.
The 1st semester ends with summer, because schools in Japan start the year in April so the summer holiday splits up the first and second, so they are still in first year
It still is the first year. Japanese school years have three semesters. So we have just passed 1/3rd of the first year, meaning 1/9th of their entire school career. :D
I think the subtitles for the Japanese version do a better job at conveying the subtle stuff. The Dub kinda butchers the meaning of some of the moments. Don't get me wrong, I'm not upset or anything, but I think thats where the confusion is coming from. No big deal, but sh*t gets deeeeepp lol
Subtitles get the upgrade from verbal comprehension, up to reading comprehension! Lol but I do think the translation is objectively different. Not much, but the scenes are different.
Yo! You might have already heard this but the reason they are doing a break at the end of the semester for the summer is that Japanese school years are different than North American ones. Their school starts in April, and the first term runs until around the third week of July. Their second term runs from September to December, so they only have a short summer break and a longer winter one. In North America we have basically one big break over summer because that is a really busy season for farming, which is a pretty major historical staple for us. :) Cheers!
Shigaraki's conviction did change. The only thing that didn't change was his desire to kill All Might. Before he wanted to kill All Might because he hates him and just because he wanted to. Now he wants to kill him for those reasons and to show society that their sense of safety is a joke. That Heros and Laws do not guarantee their safety. I love that the show did this because this applies to real life. We feel safe because of police officers and other heros like them that protect us and the laws that are put in place to help protect us. But laws don't guarantee our safety. If they did we wouldn't have serial killers or rapist or other heinous things like that. And Police Officers and other heros like them can't save everyone no matter how much they want to or how much we want them to.
This was only the first semester, legit. In Japan, a new school year begins in the Spring, then they take Summer Vacation, then they finish out the school year in the Autumn and Winter. It's not like America where we do the whole school year in one go, Winter to Spring, then split years up with Summer Vacation. So it's only been a few months since Izuku came to UA.
I honestly think you guys should watch the shows subbed bc you usually talk while the characters are explaining something important and then get confused. Looking forward to season 3!

No, it's just the first semester, not the first year; the entry exam was in February, so classes started in probably the first week of March, and it's now summer, so maybe June? Japanese school years are very different than American ones.
@@Animemus Makes sense. I just thought it was March because I thought they got the acceptance letters a week after the entry exam, which took place in February, so I figured they'd start school, like, a week or two after the letters arrived. But it's probably April, like you said.

Parallels? Shigaraki right now would beat and kill Deku with his pinky finger.

I never wanted to watch shows in groups until I discovered Blind wave. While they sometimes make mistakes and get confused, mostly they are on track, help clarify stuff to each other, and have enlightening discussions. But then I discovered Normies and now I know why I will never watch shows in group.
(I still love their reaction specially Avatar but its sad when they miss important details or misinterpret stuff)
Yall dont pay attention sometimes like damn shigaraki deadass was just a villain just to be one
Right? Like before he was more a child misbehaving because he wanted attention, now he has an actual goal, and that makes him all the more dangerous!
Kind of every villain is a hero in his own story his motivation and his ideals is what would make him a hero in his eyes
It wasn't that obvious, the change in his perspective.
seriously they dont pay attention, look how long it took them to realize it was Shigaraki
@Jordan Simeone This was what I thought too until they showed us his past in the manga and stuff. Made me realize his growth all this time.

Yes it’s first semester not year. Remember since this anime from japan. They’re basing it off the Japanese school system. If I remember correctly, my Japanese instructor mentioned that they start later compared to the American school system.
TrueJEM yeah basically the first semester comes before Summer vacation and they come back from summer vacation to the second semester and so on
they are also 15-16 instead of 14-15
Yes I believe their school year starts in the spring, then they have a summer vacation after the first semester and so on.
@@Shanequabumblebee It also why you see anime kids getting so much summer homework, becuse it in the middle of their school year and the coming back to same teachers who issued it.
Season 4 is simuldub so you don’t have to worry about switching to sub
About it being summer break already, the Japanese school year is different to the North American/European system.
They start their year in spring, finish 1st semester by summer, have a 5-6 week break with homework, 2nd semester in fall to Christmas time, 3rd semester from the New Year to Spring. Get a small break before starting the next school year in spring.
UA also has school 6 days a week (only Sundays off)
Homework on summer break. Man that would really suck.
what changed for shigaraki is that he realized he has to stand by his ideals and convictions, he has to center his actions on them and actively work to make them a reality, not just be a passive actor in his own life.
and no, japanese school years start in april, so they have a semester, summer, a semester, winter, a semester, spring, start of the next year.

They really thought Stain tasted some of his own blood and paralyzed himself when the narration stated he passed out because a broken rib punctured his lung
Ikr I used to like these guys when they reacted to avatar and bojack but it seems like now with this and naruto 6 people can't pick up the simplest thing that the show clearly explains.

I shouldn't be suprised that they are still dimwitted at understanding the villian motive due to Stain!
Don't forget, Stain was defeated by his own quirk! He swallowed his own blood!!!1 /s
Diogo Cardoso that shit was incredible how wrong they got that
@Jordan Simeone yes, let your kid watch anime *it's for children after all* lol.
The reason why the episode was important for the villain was that before he was taking it as a game. That's why in season one he was saying things like "Game Over, All Might cheated and should have loss, etc"
He simply now understands that he needs to have a conviction that matches Stain's when it comes to his goal. To no longer see it as a game, but a reality to do. And that will let him be a leader.

I don’t know if you knew, but summer break in Japan is short (yet still there longest break, even though they still have assignments and extra curricular stuff) and it’s after the first semester. Shigaraki didn't have a singular focus before, he was all over the place, Despite him talking about killing all might BEFORE. NOW he DOES have a specific motive, an EXACT focus on all might
the dubs come out around the same time the subs first air

Aww, they think that Shigaraki is a badly written villain... That would be adorable if it weren’t so infuriatingly stupid

simonO712 with “now”, do you mean where the normies are at, where the anime’s at, or where the manga’s at? At any rate, by the end of season 2 Shigaraki has already gotten a whole lot interesting, even more so with All for One referring to him as his “successor” and making clear the future parallels between Midoriya and Shigaraki. The Normies have all the available info to see that he’s evolving, they just choose not to see it. It’s quite sad really, and I hope they’ll think differently by the end of the next season.

Their school starts in April, and the first term runs until around the third week of July. Their second term runs from September to December, so they only have a short summer break and a longer winter one.
In North America we have basically one big break over summer because that is a really busy season for farming, which is a pretty major historical staple for us. :)

This was only the first semester, legit. In Japan, a new school year begins in the Spring, then they take Summer Vacation, then they finish out the school year in the Autumn and Winter.
