Amazing video. Not only printed a whole set, but reviewed creators along the way, assembled all minis and painted them. And provided a machine review on top of that. Most youtubers would split this into 3 - 5 videos. This is top quality and should see more exposure within 3d printing community.

Lol that remark around the 7:30 mark, i 100% agree with, i literally unboxed my saturn 3, leveled the plate, dialed the resin in, and have been non stop printing for 3 months, no adjustments besides throwing a heater in the room it prints. Its a science that has been well documented and easy to follow along with. Not an art in itself.

I agree with your assessment of "not a hobby". I've had a AnyCubic for a couple years now and I have just run gallons of resin through it with little to no messing around with it. I have to change the FEP occasionally and the standard "cleaning out the vat" chores, but aside from that it's just another consumer electronic device. One of the wonders of 3D printers is how much they just work.

I've tried a couple Mars 3 for my business, and at this point theirs no way I can recommend it. First one had a squeaky Z Axis and lasted a couple weeks before the motor gave out and I sent it back. 2nd one I got last month and it arrived as a dud.
Just do yourself a favor, get a Mars 2S. About 50 bucks cheaper, pretty easy to find for 180 bucks. It lasts for a lot longer and the quality and build size is about the same as the Mars 3. You'll get about 4 months out of the screen as a power user, and while the screen is 1080p, you really don't lose much detail even at small sizes.
If you're looking to spend more, just grab the Saturn. Though I'd recommend starting with the Mars 2S. This is because Elegoo has a factory warranty on most things up to 6 months. So when a part inevitably fails, hit up Elegoo and they'll send you a new part. If you fix these yourself you'll learn a ton and it helps to know how to replace a screen on a cheaper model before trying it on a 500 dollar Saturn without prior experience.
Long read but hopefully worth it for whoever wants to get into resin printing. My only advice is to not go in thinking this is an Easy Bake Oven, it a machine you're gonna dial in and repair. It's messy and frustrating but super rewarding with the tangible results you get, especially when you make your own 3d models.
Oh and print in a garage, the fumes will irritate your throat if their just floating around a room. The resin isn't really all that toxic to the touch, so bare hands is fine just wash up with soap before going out in the sun or that resin is gonna cure on your hands and burn like hell.
TLDR: You can be rough on these, just know how to fix it, and hit up Elegoo if you have problems. Mars 2S > Mars 3 for newbies, and be patient. It's gonna go wrong, a lot. Thanks for whoever read this book.

I have an Anycubic photon mono 2. I am blown away by resin 3d printing. It’s amazing at how this machine can print just about anything with no he amounts of detail it produces. I haven’t had to mess with the settings at all and I have had perfect prints on about everything that I have printed. I have had only 2 failed prints on this machine and that was my fault, lol. I had corrupted files, go figure. But with that being said it is well worth the money to get one of these machines be it Anycubic or any other brand. I encourage it thoroughly.

"Resin isn't a hobby of itself"
(-Posibility of shotty supports needing even more cleanup on the mini)
    -Needs a curing station
    -Needs a washing station
-Resin is toxic only to be handled by gloves
    - A whole setup will run you around 600$

It’s not that it’s a hobby in itself, it’s that you need a separate, well ventilated space that’s only for 3D printing. It’s that most of the materials you’re working with are really really nasty. The risks are very real. The fumes, the resin, the alcohol, the mess. That’s why I walked away before I started.

    • @OnceinaSixSide
      @OnceinaSixSide  Рік тому +2

Fair concerns to have! I actually made a whole video about those fumes and making it safe in a shared space. The point I was trying to make is that it doesn't have to be this thing that consumes a lot of time or energy. It can be as easy as just slicing files and hitting print.

These are great points. I love the results I'm getting, but there's a LOT of icky cleanup and maintenance, even when you get to the stage where you know what you're doing.
I think we have a responsibility to make it clear to people that you're not buying a replicator from Star Trek when you buy a printer. 3D printing is an investment in time and money.
The "it's a hobby in itself" message is an easily-understandable shorthand for this. I'm glad I was warned what to expect, and it certainly tallies with my personal experience.

Here's the key to success with it: Clean your build plate with IPA and paper towels THOROUGHLY prior to installation, then sand like you see me do in this video with 240grit, and clean again with IPA, then sand a bit more, then clean again. Let it dry for at least 30 minutes to an hour, and then install the magnet. Presupporting is difficult, I both love and hate that the market shifted to be all presupported. Love that it is easy to download my favourite creators prints and throw them on instantly, but hate how difficult it can be to keep up and compete as a one man operation for the most point with how many hats I have to wear to get these models out haha. Especially when we are almost pressured to sell a model that may have taken 50-100+ hours designing/refinining/supporting/printing (Ripjawz) for a few dollars. I still love the industry though and those that choose to support us like yourself, and I look forward to more of your content.

Deserved a sub! Funny you mentioned at the end about the Z lift at the end of print. On my saturn 2 it is more of a bug due to build volume and height. Causing the resin to splash all over inside the cover which slightly melts the acrylic cover. This was remedied with a quick email to support and a firmware update so that it now lifts about half way up (depending on print size) which is plenty enough to remove the prints already. However I still understand your point having owned Longer orange 10 which did not really lift after finishing the print. rant over anyway will def check more videos and your STLs and if I like what I see Ill toss in a coffee

Great video; I’ve been looking for content like this on UA-cam forever!!
I do have to disagree that resin printing isn’t a hobby in itself. I agree that post processing is essentially equivalent to building models; however, tinkering with settings is annoying and is something unique to printing. Also, you talked for about five minutes how rare it is to actually find perfect pre-supported files. Anytime I get a new set of minis to print (primarily Archvillain Games), it is going to take me at least an hour to lay out my build plates and slice my files; and that’s if they are perfect! Generally though, I have to fix files in mesh mixer, find islands, and in some cases resupport. In contrast, when I want a quick project, I can get a kit, build it, and paint. I love my Mars 3, but until all the files are all “S tier”, there is hobby time that has to be invested into 3d printing that simply isn’t required from model building.
Fantastic video! Time to go check out your backlog!!

Glad you found your way here! There can be a lot to resin printing if you want there to be, but I believe so strongly that we're basically already at plug and play levels of printing (barring learning to level a build plate and calibrate resin [which a noobie can easily do in the first day with their printer]). So if your printer has no mechanical issues (the manufacturer did their job right, QC is good etc), your build plate is level, your exposure time is dialed in, and finally your presupported files are well made - you can absolutely just print off plate after plate, around the clock. It's like airbrushing right, you can if you want get really technical with it and learn the thing inside and out and play around with different needle sizes, air pressure, paints and whatever, or you can just blast primer through it and nothing else and never even think about the airbrush beyond "I need to prime minis right now". Same thing with resin printing.

Thank you so much for making this video, I picked up one of these and the mercury x during the prime day sale. Actually, had quite a few issues with amazon sending me first the wrong printer and then a damaged one, finally the third one works and is amazing. But I have been lacking in knowledge, pretty much just going at it and making whatever I have wanted, which is great but sometimes the prints turn out poorly or I don't understand settings. Finding this video has been a greet teaching moment and I cannot wait to dive in more when I have time to make even more high-quality prints. Oh, and that carbon filter works in my opinion, at least with water washable resin. I have had no issues keeping it running at my hobby desk, however I do have a bottle of normal resin as a gift so it will be spending some time the garage when I get around to using that up.

Known about 3D resin printing for a little while and I've been interested. Just found your channel when I was looking at Mars 5 Ultra videos. I know this video is a year old, but this printer is $120 brand new on Elegoo's website today. $85 is you're wiling to risk a used one. I cannot believe that for so little I could start printing miniatures of that quality. It is way past time to get one of these and level up my hobby.

Hey man what might be helpful tip for you as far as curing goes is try water curing your prints. Super easy, once the "wash" phase is done just drop the minis in a container with water and hit em with the uv. It'll cure the whole mini better and faster.

Would have suggested using the XP2 test for dialing in quickly, then run either the Towns or Cones of Calibration (it's not really discussed much but CoC is a more supports oriented calibration.) 2.5s at .05 layer height is usually a good place to start when you're operating temperatures are around 20C. If your environment is colder, you might run into some complications.
Also, re: Additional supplies to go with a resin printer set up: A silicon rubber baking mat or one of those pet mats with the lip on the edges is good to have so any spills and/or drips are somewhat contained and easier to clean up.
