  • Join us as we explore the haunting remnants of Wellington, WA, once a bustling railroad town and now a ghost town. This eerie site is forever marked by the 1910 Wellington Avalanche, the deadliest avalanche in U.S. history, claiming 96 lives when a massive slide struck a Great Northern Railway train.
In this video, we’ll take a close-up look at:
The abandoned town of Wellington, which was later renamed Tye after the tragic event, and now only remnants of the railroad station and other structures remain.
The Great Northern Railway avalanche disaster site, where the wreckage of the snow-covered train is still visible, and the tragic history is recounted.
The old Cascade Railway Tunnel-a relic of the past that once allowed trains to pass through the Cascades safely, until the second tunnel was completed in 1929.
As we explore the devastation of the March 1910 avalanche and the remains of the old depot, you’ll get a glimpse of how nature’s fury changed the course of history for this small town and the railway. Was the Wellington site left with more than just debris? Many claim to have experienced unexplained phenomena here-**you'll have to decide for yourself if the site is haunted**.

Refreshing to see the area without someone talking through it. Very peaceful video not to mention a very well done. Wellington will always have a special place in my heart that I will never forget. More people should go and experience the beauty of the Iron Goat trail. Maybe, spend time listing to what Wellington has to say. You never know who or what will talk to you if you listen close enough.

There is a book for those of your who like to read. It is called "The 1910 Wellington Disaster". It was written by a man who was there and describes the disaster and the rescue operation. I think the man was Rodney Fletcher and Deborah Cuyle helped him write it. I believe she was Rodneys daughter. I may be mistaken, but when I moved to Washington from the East Coast, I devoured many books about the local history. This is one of those books that you just can't put down.

A friend and I rode through that tunnel on motorcycles in the early nineties. It was clear then except for some large holes in the floor that were cooling pits for lasers that the University of Washington had set up there years before. The holes were covered by some timbers and plywood. The plywood came very near to the wall of the tunnel.
We couldn't see the holes much but assumed that they had water in them so we got off of the bikes and walked close to the side of the tunnel, and walked beside the running bikes that were on the plywood. We feathered the clutch and carefully made our way across. We were prepared to let go of the bikes if they dropped through the plywood!! Fortunately all went well and we rode the rest of the way to the west end of the tunnel. It was much too grown over then to ride out of the west end back then. The east end was about the same as it likely is today. I haven't been there for at least 20 yrs. but now I'm inspired to go now thanks to this video. The words on the bottom of the sign that has the names of the victims of the avalanche are thought provoking!!
I have heard of a tombstone that had similar words on it. Here is what was written on it. "Stop my friend as you go by, where you are now so once was I, where I am now you soon shall be, so prepare yourself to follow me"!!
It was said that someone once added these words in chalk below the epitaph, "To follow you I'm not content, until I know just where you went"!! More thought provoking words!! Thanks for the thoughtful, respectfully done video!

This is well researched here. I knew about this incident, having read a history book on the Great Northern. According to that, there was only one surviving witness, a railroad employee who had gotten off the train to smoke and was on the platform and had the avalanche pass over his head. I see that the state (probably) has constructed a trail on the old roadbed with historical markers and the memorial plaque, but the tunnel is no longer safe.

I went there in the 80’s and it still looks very similar
Tragic site and it hard to imagine the town that was once there as nature engulfed it

I found out at the west end of the snow shed @ 15.50 it was used as bombing practice in 1942 but the pilot got in trouble for doing it.

That would be very disrespectful because of the many souls that died there. I suppose he was transferred from another state to a nearby base and the likely young guy had no idea of what had happened there.

I will never go up there again 😅..I was in the shelter alone getting dark. And had no idea about it being haunted. Most of the dead are still up there having not crossed over. And that poor little girl crying broke my heart after I had injured my self looking for her .I did not find out until weeks later that she is called the little girl lost. And that poor little girl has been stuck up there for over a hundred years. So sad.long story of what happened to me up there. But if you look up GHOST OF WELLINGTON THE IRON GOAT TRAIL I am the no name guy talking to NWPIA of what I went through. I know all about the spirit world and never was afraid. But I am now.😅.You should never be in that shelter at night alone.

Really? Wow! I am not saying that spirit's are not able to be there? But I am a believer in Jesus Christ our lord and savior! And I am sure that those spirit's are not there anymore because, once you have died? You are either in heaven or Hell? It's your choice and God bless you guys for this video and I try watching everyone of them

Soooo sad to read the names on the memorial and see ages - the entire Beck family were killed, including their three kids. Great job on this video!
