It is remarkable that the effective altruism movement doesn't latch on to the goals of SENS Research Foundation much more readily than it does. SENS is a perfectly cut out for effective altruists. The amount of bang for your buck at the early stages is much higher than it would be at the later stages, and there's good reason to believe it will have an impact as we've seen hints of this in the private sector.

So, I've been following Aubrey de Grey's work for over 10 years, and unfortunately there has been effectively zero academic progress during that time. It's also not entirely clear whether or not curing aging will be something that helps all people, or rather just those who are currently rich, allowing them be rich forever.
Because even if you were immortal, you would have to work at 1000$ per hour, 24 hours are day, 7 days a week, for 3000 years, to make as much money as some of richest people on earth (26.280.000.000$ which is about 18% of what Jeff Bezos owns).
De Grey's point that "death makes other people unhappy" is not really a very good point, because you could use the same logic to say "we should not allow anyone to be born, because then they would eventually die and thus cause suffering". It's more complex than just saying "aging causes death, and thus suffering".

Well, it's a good point if you're already alive, like all of us.

@@paul-luukprofijt7134 I'm mystified you don't see any academic progress. [The Sens Foundation] has a whole list of intramural and extramural publications that have released since the founding of SENS 10 years ago. You can find them on SENS.org under the research tab, though you are right to suspect a lot more has been spun off into start-ups if that is what you believe.
Also if you've been following SENS for 10 years you must know Dr. de Grey never discusses "immortality" given its religious usage and the fact that as he states he is merely working on better medicine. Suffering comes from dying, and that's what aging eventually does to you. Death is suffered by the people who survive those who've died.
All your arguments Dr. de Grey has addressed countless times. Why haven't you advanced the conversation beyond that to put forth why his rebuttals aren't valid?! Because that's what he's been inviting for many years. It astounds me that after 10 years of time to appreciate the point of view that is central to his foundation, you come back with points of objection that are identical to the kneejerk reactions he discusses all the time during his lectures. Were you following his lectures about the pro-aging trance 7 or so years ago when that started?

@@doedicurus Yeah, he's clearly wrong. The amount of progress that has been made in the field of senescence is just one indicator that we are making headway in tackling this scourge. The one area that we are lacking in is alzhiemers research. I believe the 2020s will be a major groundbreaking decade. We do have to get our act together when it comes to dealing with climate change.

At the beginning, when he was talking about importance, I thought he would have said that aging currently causes more than 2/3 of all human deaths. In other talks, he usually includes this fact. Weird that he didn't mention it here since it was super relevant.

I also think it is sad that anti-aging isn't more mainstream yet. If you were hanging from a cliff by your fingers, surely you would use all your resources and power to try to climb up and save yourself?!
In a way we are all hanging off that cliff that is life, and the gravity pulling us down towards our death is aging. It is just happening so slow, but yet so surely. Why aren't we doing all in our powers to prevent death and aging?
I think the time is now for us to take action. For every year we grow older, we lose life motivation and our cognitive abilities decline. Moreover, this kind of research probably takes much more time and money than we are aware of. Lots of trial and error and lots of brainpower is required. We should start now. If we wait until we are older, it is likely too late.
Just think if only 1 million people worldwide donated $10 a month. It would make a gigantic difference.
If we wait too long Aubrey De Grey will lose motivation and drive because he will realize he himself will be too old to benefit from the research.
Sorry for my long rant haha, but just imagine being on your death bed and seing the news on TV that the cure is coming out in a month...

So huge amounts of money and resources are pouring into the anti-aging community, and why isn't at least some of this money is going into SENS? Even a fraction of it would make a huge difference!

Spread the word, donate to SENS! Make this movement more well known. We can make a difference.

I still need to be convinced that working against aging is more important than working against factory farming.

First we solve aging. Then we have enough time to solve food. Currently we are far away from having a food crisis. Or would you rather die?

as much as I don't wanna die, and I think I have years to spare, having said that I agree, if we don't have a climate to live in what's the point..? But these things aren't mutually exclusive, we can work on both at the same time

    • @roger3893
      @roger3893 4 роки тому +8

@@randomgamingstuff1 Well people should focus on what they think is most important. People tend to be more productive that way. Personally I think the climate never will be so bad that it is unlivable and eventually I bet we will even be able to manipulate the climate back to normal.

My Point is that as an altruistic cause, extending healthspan seems less impactful than working on factory farming (just for the sake of the animals). That doesn't mean you can't be interested in it personally & selfishly: I definitely am!

We can do MORE than one thing at a time. Otherwise I agree with you.
