- Steam bending a Helix Twist is one of those old-school woodworking techniques that not many woodworkers know about. The twist is fairly simple but requires the wood to be bent over a curve twice before the twist can occur. For best results use green and air-dried wood.

Very interesting technique. Had no idea this could be done to wood and it remain stable.
Yea, it’s amazing the way wood can bend, kinda like twisting up metal.
Really interesting video. Not a technique I will ever use, but its good to see something new,
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great demonstration, thank you for filming it. I noted that the twist is tighter in the other end. That can be used as a design feature, but I am curious can you continue the process and for example tighten from the other end to get a more even twist? If you steam in between, will the helix open? Maybe creating a detachable press and twist from both ends at once, little by little? Any recommendations on what type of wood to use? Softwood like pine? Anyhow, that was really cool!
Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed the video. The twist can certainly be improved and controlled to get a better output. Twisting at both ends sounds promising especially if done mechanically. For woods to experiment with I recommend hardwoods like Ash, White Oak and Birch.
