Sorry for this newbie question: why do you lay the tool flat on top of the work piece at 1:19?
It’s a very good question. I’m listening/feeling the vibrations the tool makes on the wood. If the sound is consistent and smooth then the wood is a full round cylinder. If the wood has flat surfaces on it the tool will bounce and make an uneven loud sound. This technique makes it so you don’t have stop the lathe to check if the wood is fully round.
