  • As the COP21 climate talks reach their final crucial stages, outside of the negotiation halls in Paris environmental NGOs, grassroots organizations, climate justice activists and trade unions from all over the world have been uniting to form a new global green movement.
    One of its driving forces is Canadian social activist Naomi Klein, author of This Changes Everything, Capitalism vs The Climate. She has been speaking at activist meetings and talking to UK Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, who before being elected committed to a 100 percent sustainable energy transition in the UK by 2030.
    The last week of the COP21 has seen the opening of the climate action zone, a space for civil society to mobilize and prepare its final protest showdown at the end of the conference on December 12, now known as “D12”.
    VICE News meets Naomi Klein and Jeremy Corbyn and finds out what this new international climate justice movement has in store for the end of the summit.

      +James McKee Liberals (if referring to modern American liberalism) generally reside in inner cities, which are wealthier and therefore have the resources to adapt to climate change. It's the conservatives in the deep isolated farming communities should be the most concerned about as their crops disappear through droughts and floods, and the elderly conservatives who will likely become a burden on society as it scrounges for resources in a hostile natural environment who should be most concerned.

    • @stephenking7095
      @stephenking7095 8 років тому

      +fdgfgdf me. its fudged and selective and most has been thoroughly debunked. you also have a broad church of deniers, some say its not not happening, some say its partial, some say sun, some say something else, basically the deniers have not come to a broad conclusion. to say all scientists are in on it to get their funding is rubbish. if it was really a hoax then there would be 30, maybe 40% of scientific consensus agreeing because universities aren't beholden to governments.
      as Corbyn says there is an ecological crisis going on that, because of the capitalist demand for growth, means we have to savage vast swathes of natural habitat for a dirty fuel and climate change or not, its still wrecking the environment.
      deniers are on the side of the oil companies, the oil companies that do not give a shit about the planet compared to their profit margins. Right wing, Republican, Murdoch, Fox News, a few meteorologists and some keyboard warriors/conspiracy theorists vs. the entire scientific community who study these things for a living. Powerful oil companies with huge PR firms vs. animals who are dying or have migrated due to drastic changes in the environment.
      There is nothing wrong with wanting to care abut the planet, its isnt some conspiracy to take away your car or to stop you using a kettle for making tea, its about how a rising population can use a finite resource with drastically impinging on planetary systems by using clean, natural, renewable energy.
      What knowledge do I have? I've studied glaciers, I've tested streams, I've tested inner city air pollution. I will concede that anyone saying politicians are doing the right things are to be thoroughly scrutinized because normally they are all as slippery as heck, but if this was a hoax and world control they would've enforced this in the 1990s instead of letting fossil fuel companies continuously break agreements. or is that part of the long con too?
      I side with Corbyn, Klein, climatologists, environmentalists and nature as oppose to fat cat oil executives, keyboard warriors and Inhofe, u know, the guy who threw the snowball in the senate to disprove global warming in middle of February. Deniers find so many holes in the official "narrative" that its hard to take them seriously.

    The question should not be whether global weather change is a thing or not, but rather how do we adapt our lifestyle in the most helpful way. Personally I think triple glazing and filling your wall cavity with polystyrene useless. We need to tackle things at the core, like reduce packaging instead of increasing the recycling of said packaging. I don't need each one of my apples individually packed in cling film...

    If those activist want a climate change then why do they oppose nuclear energy as well which can be used in many ways for generating electricity and so on? When any country is on the verge of constructing a nuclear based electricity power station or is about to induct a nuclear powered vessel in its fleet, then why do they protest against the nuclear energy as well.

      Largely it's because the Green political movement arose from not just environmentalist groups but also a strong anti-nuclear sentiment, and since climate change has entered the mainstream, the Green parties have dominated the discourse as being the only "true" protector of environmental issues.

    Socialism, interventionism, protectionism, nationalisation, regulation, and statism aren't good for the environment.
    Private property, free exchange, free markets, classical liberalism aren't bad for the environment.
    People who are sincerely concerned about the hard facts of natural science shouldn't be offended by either of those two statements.
    And there also isn't a force moving society inevitably toward socialism. There isn't a material productive force dictating a dialectical historical process. And the environment isn't moving us toward collectivist management either.

    • @jessieessex
      @jessieessex 8 років тому

      +Tevo77777
      I'm so glad that you asked. It was one specific issue that was brought to my attention which made me skeptical. Until then I had no question, even without conclusive data on either end, that climate change is an issue I should whole heartedly speak up about. I still do think that we should do our best, each of us and as a system to reduce the carbon footprint of our existence. I have not begun to throw all care to the wind, but I am wary of convoluted political agendas that may have a negative impact in the long term. If you would like a link to the video, I am happy to provide it. It was concerning the climate summit that was taking place in France, regarding the proposal to eradicate all efforts to remove resources from the planet. The point that was made was how willing these global corporations were to end mining and turn their efforts purely towers renewables. Of course on the surface, if this is true it would seem wonderful. As this particular video had a point of view that expressed the ulterior motive behind any such agreement, and the possible ramifications of abandoning ALL fossil fuels. Using the example of renewable failure, and newer/higher costs for the renewables, since the corporations would still basically be owning those methods of obtaining and distribution, we would be left reliant on the big corporations once again, forced to change out our systems and those who could simply not afford to do it, would be left in the cold, so to speak.
      I had to wonder if abolishing it all at once might be the cause of massive deaths to certain populations reliant on oil to keep them warm. I imagined how convenient it would be for global elite to be rid of the elderly, solving the social security problem in the process. My heart is always for those who are unfairly oppressed, and though I might be reacting emotionally rather than logically, I can live with my conscious and have no guilt if I just ride the fence until I am sure that the side I land on is the one I feel is best according to all known information.
      I am open to hearing any of your points even if they are different than mine. All I ask is that you refrain from name calling or insults, I have seen so much of this that I just don't care to get involved much anymore. Thanks for your time.

    • @Seth9809
      @Seth9809 8 років тому +1

      jessie SX
      Well the issue is that those in power actually depend on the elderly.
      Think about it.
      When the system didn't want Black people to vote, who was there to push against the youth?
      The Elderly.
      Who was there before when women wanted the vote? Who was there to complain that they didn't deserve it.
      The Elderly. Hell, even the old Queen of England insisted women be powerless even as she ruled her nation with an iron fist.
      Time and time again, the people in power naturally want to remain in power. That's just what power does to you, you like it and you want to keep it.
      Old people grow up in these power structures and thus form their identity around them. People would rather die then shed their identity.

      You're right about the elderly. I was just discussing that very point two days ago. They are the strong opponents to anything liberal in general. A good demographic for certain issues, that is true, though I'm not trying to over generalize, or pigeonhole anyone.
      The video was called The Technocratic Agenda Sustainable Development... I would be interested in your thoughts on it. I am not sure how to research what the person puts forth in the video but I would like to know if he is telling the truth and how much of the truth is actually relevant.
