      @@bsquared4604 - God's gift to oxygen... the whole album cut too close to the truth. Lyrical, musical, and literal genius, the whole package. And I realize I'm responding to a smiley face. But the counter lyrics at the end... Can't anyone else see the pure brilliance?

    1:29 onwards does my head in every time. Brilliant in the arrangement.. dropping from a power pop song into one of the most beautiful homages to Brian Wilson circa Pet Sounds/Smile, bravo to you Jellyfish.. if only the early 90s wasn't owned by scared corporate record companies scrambling for the next Nirvana, the era would've been yours.

    The band hated this video and were talked into it by their management. They raised concerns about the guy sticking a needle into his leg and were ignored as the video company ‘knew what they were doing’.
    It ended up being banned in the uk and various other places. They then were allowed to do what they wanted for their follow up single, ‘New Mistake’.

    • @SlugDestroyer
      @SlugDestroyer Рік тому

      That's a whole new perspective on the video for me, I thought they were doing this in a classic weird/cheesy jellyfish kind of way, but knowing it's actually supposed to be one of those stupid edgy 90s rock music videos with this whimsical harpsichord tune makes it even funnier.

    • @futuristicloser
      @futuristicloser 10 місяців тому

      So that’s why this video feel so out of place in their music video collection. This is easily their worst one. I can’t even tell what is supposed to be happening because of all the cutaways and horrible camera shots, should’ve let the band to their thing

    • @kpaasial

      Many bands were forced to accept whatever their record label thought would be the proper visual interpretation of their songs. The other one band that suffered heavily because of this was of course XTC, the band has said that the only video that is somewhat good is their 1983 song "Funk Pop A Roll" from the Mummer album.

    What a delicious little masterpieces these Jellyfish songs are! At the last moments you can even hear a theremin (Good Vibrations references). These guys really love those 60s and 70s bands and have the perfect balance between agressivity and good taste

    I saw them, twice.
    first time I saw them in san diego at the hard rock café. they played a free show supporting the newly released spilt milk album.
    I was absolutely blown away by the four part harmonies that were pitch PERFECT. I became an instant fan and paid a lot of money to watch them play again in San Francisco.
    I consider myself very fortunate to have seen these guys play live.

      good question. rumor on the streets was they were bankrupted by the cost to produce spilt milk. apparently there is a cost to the name jellyfish and they had to settle the debt with the studio before the name could be used. I also heard there was in fighting in the band during these times. I will just take a very selfish approach to the whole thing and say, it is a damned shame that this talented group of musicians isn't sharing more great music with us.

  • @billbrennan9549
    @billbrennan9549 Місяць тому

    Rock/alternative music in the early '90s was in a state of flux. Hair metal was fading, southern rock found success mainly through the Black Crowes, and Britpop was attempting to break into the U.S. market with limited success (Blur's "Song 2" was meant as a parody). Amidst this emerged Jellyfish, whose Spilt Milk album brought a fresh power-pop sound that hadn’t been heard since the Raspberries. Then, grunge exploded, shaking up the music world with its raw, unpolished style and dominating much of the decade (until pop acts like the Spice Girls took over). In a different reality-one where Nirvana didn't rip off Boston’s “More Than a Feeling”-Jellyfish's "The Ghost at Number One" might have actually hit number one instead of fading into obscurity.

    Just so amazing, all their singles were unbelievable pop masterpieces but this one just seems so prophetic and so fucking tragic as it seems to be making a reflection on Jellyfish’s career as a whole… Maybe just my thoughts

    Much of this song reminds me of The Beach Boys. Sounds like it would have fit right in on "Pet Sounds" or "Smiley Smile"....

    There are people who like to say that Jellyfish songs weren't anti-Catholic. To this I say: really listen to this song and joining a fanclub.

    So good....Not like anything out there at the time...but so way ahead of their time while utilizing something from before their time (slightly)....genius.

    @dorian78insable Yeah. I bought this album when it came out and hadn't heard anything of Pet Sounds. Used to think the banjo at the end was odd, but interesting. Then I heard the banjos on Pet Soujds and finally got it.

    2017 : the first time I have seen this video. I got hooked on Jellyfish in Jan. 1991. I'm really happy that I took the advantage and saw them on the Spilt Milk Tour. What a great song! and what a waste of money this video had to have been. Who produced it? Max Weinstien? Think about how much money the band was billed for that crap. The story telling was so basic it was insulting to the viewer. Me. Sure was "HOLLYWOOD SPECTACULAR" I wish they would have released the Jools Holland tape and called it a "wrap". saving hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the band. Full stop,

    I love the drums! I have some really cool live Jellyfish videos, does Andy always play standing up? Fucking brilliant.

      I think he always plays drums standing up. In his earlier band "Beatnik Beatch" he's standing in the music video.
