I love that bit in the game. It's repeatable too. Just run your character into a trolley and it will get stuck. Really funny.

About 2:30, I think this game is the best example of a narrative with an amazing female lead which doesn't feel like it's being shoved down your throat as political propaganda or to check off some inclusive checklist. Jesse is such a relatable character and so real, she's genuinely surprised, confused, intrigued. She starts off as doubting herself but by the end, she accepts her authority as the Director and none of it at any point feels forced. Can't imagine enjoying this game the same without Jesse Fayden. Although I liked her performance as Beth Wilder in QB more, that's just personal perference.
At the end of the day, Jesse is Dyna-Mite (If you catch my drift)

idk he's lost his touch imo. He fell into the culture war BS and sounds like more and more like a boomer (I mean the bell and snark over female leads? gimme a break..) He's embraced his Mr. Anti-PC crusader and it detracts from the actual game reviews.
He's about 5 years older than I am, we both started on PC and play exclusively on PC but he sounds like my 65 year old dad.
@@789french5 I think he made a valid point actually, but we all have different perspectives. For instance, even though I know he's not a sell-out and I watch a lot of his reviews, yet I still disagree with him sometimes. Some games he likes and I don't. He obviously prefers certain genres, as do I. He is biased Cody, as is everyone, but he is not a blind enthusiast, as are so many.
I love Ahti, the janitor. He is played by one of the top actors in Finland, Martti Suosalo. His terrible Finglish is awesome. Also the directly translated Finnish proverbs and idioms he keeps using are hilarious. Death Stranding has Norman Reedus, Cyberpunk 2077 has Keanu Reeves... and Control has Martti Suosalo. :)

Women only want equality in jobs considered attractive/cool. We don't see women complaining about how few women work down the sewers now do we.
For once, if they had gone for realism and made the janitor say,,,, a Latina woman, just sayin' that would be most statistically accurate is all, then they would have found themselves with a dilemma. "Do we make this character a woman too and risk insulting women of whatever race/ethnicity we choose to use, or do we make that one a man so we can actually have males in the game other than thugs and goons for you to kill?" If they had gone the first route they would have likely had to use closed captioning due to the character speaking Spanish, or whatever. Yeah, this was a no brainer, just give a man the job and we can have him speak and be anything we want as it won't matter to anyone. The couple dozen women actually playing this game will be okay with it and the millions of young men and boys will just accept it, because, well, "who's going to hear their complaints, if they dare, and give a crap or dare agree with them, anyway?"
All that said, I actually don't mind all this myself as it really doesn't bother me that these characters are women and they tend to be easier on the eyes anyway. I just hate the whole perceived need to push any sort of agenda in this day and age. I honestly thought we were way past all this nonsense back in the `80s. Now in a game where history is being re-written to force in some feel-good PC agenda BS, that's an entirely different matter. If they want to make something a parallel universe imagining kind of thing though, fine. That could open up such possibilities and they can do anything in a make-believe world.

Nice of you to mention F.E.A.R. in your review Mack. Can you please do a retro review on that game in the future?
PCgameplaz It’s still impressive now. Just two years ago I played through it for the first time (I’m 20 btw). It’s by far the most mentally challenging game I’ve ever played. F.E.A.R.’s difficulty isn’t a cop-out like most games where the ai just does more damage. The enemies actually ‘think’ and coordinate with each other.

@@Dregomz02 Yea that was the one flaw that everyone has with it. The funny thing is that problem would completely destroy any other game except that one. You constantly feel on edge at all times which masks the repetitive level design perfectly.

Nowadays I actually prefer if items you can pick up are marked somehow. There's so much clutter in modern games that interactive items don't stand out anymore like they did in old games with simpler graphics. I agree that first person would have been preferable, but the game looks very cool regardless.

I have now been able to play this game with an RTX card and it blew me away. Control has the best physics engine I've ever seen, and it really shows of how great raytracing can look. Physics and graphics really enhance the fun of the combat here.
The games is very demanding tho, my RTX 2070 super is barely enough with all RTX effects on at 1080p

Another awesome review dude. About the 3rd person view, i think to most people it makes sense and feels good because we grew up watching action/scifi/fantasy movies and deep down always wanted to be in control of our favourite characters and actually seeing their actions. It's like, imagine playing Path of Neo in first person, doing bullet-time, but all you see is.....the sky....and a few wavy air pockets streaming past your field of view. That'd just be sad.
I thought this game was amazing.. hate 3rd person but after 20 hours you get used to it. Finally a game that I can enjoy.. most games are so dull nowadays. Eternal snoooore!

as someone who starting playing video games when the Sega Master System was considered cutting edge, this is one of the BEST games I've played. I'm so looking forward to the sequel.
Any game made by Remedy is a must-buy for me. Either the story is interesting, or the gameplay or the gfx and music/audio. There is always something in their games. Also Poets of the Fall is a great band.
P.s. Of course, the males are cleaning the floor of the mighty elite women overlords! LOL
Ahti is a paranatural entity in the game lore (Entity A-001 according to documents found in-game), and the main protagonist is technically his assistant, doing his work while he goes off on vacation. It's hinted at heavily that he's some sort of god or personification of the games setting. The game is more like a woman cleaning up the men's messes as well, if we have to force that angle. The entire story revolves around how the former FBC directors and department heads fucked things up.

Control just hit PC today but I wasn't sure if it was a game for me so, I searched for reviews and scrolled past a dozen options thinking "IGN, no. Gamespot, no...etc." Then like a beacon in the darkness Worth a Buy appears at the bottom of the screen. Search over. It was a reminder of how rare honest reviews are. Cheers, Mack.
I think 3rd person works for some games better than others. It's sometimes hard to do melee properly without the peripheral vision you get from 3rd person. Also games with lots of acrobatics or flying I prefer to see my footing in 3rd person.
It can also be helpful for stealth games to see if you are actually hidden.
I know my comment is over a year late, but I'd still like to comment on the 1st/3rd person point you touched on:
- Some people (like me) get incredibly motion sick in 1st person games (changing FoV often doesn't help). 3rd Person games generally never have this issue.
For this reason I almost never play 1st person games. Anyway, love your content Mack, keep it going :)
They had to make it third-person as a constant reminder that they've got a female character, if it was first-person you could easily forget and think you're playing as a man and they don't want that. I might get this game if someone makes a No Clothes mod.
Except there are loads of cutscenes where you always see her. Wouldn't make a difference.

This is free right now on PS4 in the PS Now (or maybe ps+). I love it. But it is short. Like 20 hrs including the side missions and plenty of dying.

Well yeah Mack, of course, it started running like shit if you had raytracing turned on, that stuff is mighty expensive!
I used transparent and opaque reflections only (medium RTX setting) with no problems....this is of course with DLSS enabled, which I found blurred the sharpness somewhat. Nice trade off for the reflections though.
Great review, the only one I've seen who got it right. Some seem to hate the story, I loved it, like David Lynch made a video game. One missed opportunity in this review was showing the other powers which are really fun despite not rising to the level of throwing things which is the crown ability to be sure. You can fly! The detail in this game when you smash an office desk or other everyday items is stunning.
Third person feels like controlling an action movie, or an action figure. Love to see the animation of the character, i wish third person (option) was available in all games. (I do love first person shooters too.)
First person is superior in almost every way though (excluding platforming.)

i totally agree Mack, FEAR had the best AI ! I remember fighting a group up front, then 2 guys seperated and flanked me. But luckily i had a mine placed in the sideway and just heard it go off, then i knew i was getting flanked. Very nice AI behaviour !!!

Hyped for this. Still annoyed at PC nonsense but at least it's in a well-made product. Best looking telekinesis abilities I've seen in a game in a while. The camera looks great too so I was surprised to hear you say it gets in the way.

I know a game that is great in 3rd person but wouldn't be as good in 1st... Prototype. 80% of why i love that game is simply because of how badass the character looks using the powers.
@@djohnson2536 Yeah, you're right i guess. Dishonored did really well with the traversal. I can't imagine games like Assassin's Creed being improved by a first person view, but then again, Dying Light did the free running stuff really well too! I can enjoy a game either way though. I guess it's just down to preference, Skyrim worked better in 1st person because the 3rd person felt shoddy, the animation was shite lol... GTA 5 (imo) felt better in 3rd person for the same reason, the 1st person felt a bit shoddy to me.

It does a good job of fooling people into thinking the AI is good. Most of it is scripted around expectations of how the player is going to approach a situation, but if you're too quick or approach it unexpectedly, the AI just totally shits itself and can't react.
