  • In which I make synthwave from scratch using Arturia's Jup-8 V, an emulation of the classic Roland Jupiter 8 synthesizer. Thanks to them for sending that and the MicroLab over!

This was so cool to watch! I've always wondered how synthwave music was created. Reminds me a bit of the Turbo Kid soundtrack too.

Synthwave is easily my favorite genre of modern music. I loved Pop and New Jack Swing growing up, then hip-hop and R&B in my teens, but this vibe always hits different for me in adulthood. Nice job, Gabe. You did the wave justice with this one.

You, my friend, is a Millenial with an 80's kid Soul for Music!
So love to see that smile of yours when you say: 'There you go!' It's an authentic young Song Wizard eureka at the works!
You would've had a blast of a lifetime if you were born about 35 years ago. With you taste and skills you would've rocketed dude!
But then again, the legendary Jupiter 8 is a rare synth to find unless you got special resources to the pro studio. I am the few lucky ones who got the real thing (non-MIDI..1981) stashed in my studio.
Keep it up! So loove your retro music!

I agree these Arturia plugins are just amazing and the best alternative to people like us who can't afford vintage synths. The Jup-8 is definitely one of the ones from Analog Lab that I use most frequently in my Reaper projects. Thanks for the cool video, great sounds man!

Thank you so much for showcasing a warmer, gentler side of Roland Jupiter 8. Not only did the Arturia make an amazing virtual synth, but thanks to their work and your great demo, I am no longer convinced that Roland Jupiter 8 is nothing more than a collection of cool and stylishly layered, yet an ultimately disappointing collection of icy cold and harsh sounds that have no place in anything other than 80's synthpop or harsh modern-day electronica. It was good to be convinced otherwise

Great vid! Been using a bunch of V Collection stuff lately. Also if you ever get into Ableton, you'll probably dig the "Capture Midi" function, it tracks what you've been playing so you can capture great improv takes.

There are many really nice musical ideas here. Great work! I love the way this software sounds. We finally can make analog sounding music without having to be wealthy enough to buy all the vintage gear (I sold my Ob-Xa for $400 in 1998, thinking I could just buy another one later....oh snap!). Keep up the good work. I will continue to follow your music.

Dude this was really amazing. Love the modlies and the mood. Would love to Listen to something with Vocals composed by you too....maybe you can find a singer or I think there is even a plugin for voice maybe that would even work as synth wave stuff has most if the time heavyly edited vocals or even robotic voices

V4 is a huge improvement, it outperforms Roland's own emulation and uses more CPU.
I was listening to Radio Ga Ga and i noticed a Roland Jupiter 8 for the pads, i tried to match Arturia Jupiter 8 V4 to the sound patch Queen used, i was very confused because it sounds exactly the same.

Gabe, respect for making real music and not just bleeps and comparing saw waves. I'll tell you something you might find interesting. I've spent tons of time playing real Jupiter 8s and just about every other classic analog, plus the new stuff of course. A real Jupiter 8 wouldn't actually sound like the popular "Synthwave" genre at all. Synthwave to me ear, 99% of em are using softsynths. Digital synths just don't sound like an analog (to me). I'm not saying digital sounding synths are bad at all, I love them actually. I'm just saying if you played a real jupiter 8 and tried to make this same exact vibe you'd be very surprised. Listen to any video of a Jupiter 8 on youtube and you'll see what I mean. BTW I own Jupiter 8v3 and the entire v collection 7 as well as a room full of analogs. I enjoy both. If you want to get real synthwavy sounding try the Arturia Synclavier, CZV, DX7v and fairlight CMI. Synthwave I believe is more inspired by 80's movies and video games. These are all digital synths but not virtual analog, generally they are FM and early digital synthesis, with some very primitive sample playback. Movies were big on these synths, but games used console and computer generated sound. That is more chiptune usually but there's a bit of crossover between the genres when it comes to sound design. I'm no expert, but I can tell you check out the Synclavier if you haven't. It's what most of those 80s movies were scored with and the original was 100k and up.

I use the jup8v for the leads, but use the modular-v for bass. For pads it's straight to the dx7-v and the cs-80v fills out any other instruments where I want people to know it's a cs-80v

and I am the cheap guy using the old free TAL plugins and the Tyrell 6 synth, my only paid plugins are from waves, (Rhodes and Wurlitzer) so far, so good. The Arturia V collection is superb, but I can't justify to spend what they ask for... Because I prefer hardware anyways (Kawai KC 10 spectra, Korg monologue, volca bass, microbrute)
I like turning knobs too much xD
