Fun fact: More people die to moose attacks in Canada every year than bears and wolves combined. The reason moose are so dangerous is that bull moose in particular during mating season are extremely territorial and not afraid of humans at all. Bears and wolves would much rather avoid you and will usually only attack a human if they feel threatened.

Moose aren't typically aggressive towards people, but if you ever see one up close, you probably won't want to stick around. You're right that they aren't afraid of people, and they are just massive, like 7 feet tall at the shoulders and well over 1,000 pounds, not to mention antlers on the bulls that weigh over 50lbs and are 5-6 feet wide. They are basically tanks, and it's difficult not to feel incredibly small in comparison.
That said, being stuck outside in -30° weather when you're not prepared for it, is far more terrifying, and a bad enough blizzard in rural areas can basically make you instantly lost and, unable to see more than a few feet away from you.
I think the worst real life thing in the game though, is when you're walking on ice and you hear it cracking under your feet.
I know some guys who had that happen to them while snowmobiling, and went right through the ice. They were lucky and managed to get out of the water, and find a cabin they were able to break into for shelter. They lost all their supplies with the snowmobile though, and very nearly froze to death. They had already reached paradoxical undressing by the time they were found and rescued.

The Long Dark is a game where you have to debate every single step you take. The struggle of thinking “Should I stop in this small car and sleep during the storm and possibly freeze, or should I try to make it around this bend in the road and see if there is a cabin? If there isn’t a cabin or any shelter I won’t have time to walk back to the car an freeze in the cold.”

Fun fact about moose, from someone who has spent time in Northern Canada and Alaska. I've encountered black bears, wolves and Grizzlies, but nothing is scarier than a moose at night. The main reason: moose are stubborn to the point of death. If a moose decides it wants to kill you, it's GOING to kill you. Or die trying. Most carnivores will give up if they feel like you're too much effort. Not so much with moose.

I have so many memorable moments from this game. It's amazing how it manages to make you feel invincible one minute, and minutes from dying in the next. I remember my first bear encounter. I was walking in a hilly forest I hadn't explored before and got mauled by a wolf pack. 3 wolves in total all attacked me one after the other. I had a rifle with me, but because of the hills I couldn't see the wolves in time so it was useless for defense. Once I'd scared them off my health was at 15 %. I pushed forward, rifle in hand and when I walked over the next hill I saw a frickin bear just a few metres in front of me. Knowing I was most likely screwed, I took aim and managed to score a lucky critical hit on the bear, killing it instantly (for those who don't know, bears can take several hits to kill). I spent the next couple of days cooking the meat from the bear in its cave.

Nice. This game really is a story generator. I played it a bit too much to the point where it invaded my dreams, and had an ongoing dream that I opened a barber shop for bears in the Canadian wilderness, so for sanity's sake I put it down for a while. But those moments of triumph in the face of despair in the game such as you describe... yeah, that's what keeps me coming back.

    • @AM-gv9db
      @AM-gv9db 3 роки тому +22

@@PeterEvansPeteTakesPictures yeah I've noticed that it's often my own cockiness that gets me. I think that just because I have good clothes and a rifle I'm good. But then I get mauled by a surprise attack and realize I forgot to bring a bandage... My biggest scare was coming back from 2% condition on day 94 when I tried to get the 100 days survived achievement. I got 2 bleeding wounds but only had one bandage and no cloth. Used an emergency stim, tore up my hat and crafted the bandage and went to sleep right before dying. I've never dreamt about having a bear barber shop though :p

I've had a couple close calls myself in this game. Once, during the first times I played this game, I was attacked by a wolf near my current base at the time at Pleasant Valley. Nearly killed me, had like 5% hp left, and in the middle of a blizzard at night of all times! after fighting the wolf off, i took a potshot at it to make sure it ran as far as possible before limping back to my base to recover. next couple days after recovering i left to go fish, found the wolf dead on the ice of the lake. I like to think that I somehow managed to shoot it.
Other time I was caught in a blizzard with little to no supplies to make a fire while on my way to the abandoned town. bunkered in a trolley, and with no energy left I had to scavenge for sticks to make a fire. was convinced that I was gonna die from hypothermia. Needless to say, I survived and managed to find an abandoned workshop to hold up in and recover continuing my journey.

The reason why I love this game is because of the several themes woven in the world and the gameplay. You went from buying whatever you need at a shop to scavenging for food and migrating to lands where you can find better prey, like the nomadic primitive cavemen who didn't even have the comfort of farming. All of it while surrounded by the bones of the Old World, taking what those who came before you had left to be swallowed by the pass of ages.
Our negligence and greed took us down from where we were, and nature reminded us about where we came from. How small we are without our priced technology, how insignificant we are on our own, how hopeless we become when all that awaits us after fighting a constant battle is The Long Dark.

Try starting out in mystery lake. There are power lines and train tracks that can help guide you in snowstorms and fog. Don't spoil it by looking up maps. Most of the fun comes from discovery. Also, pay close attention to birds. They can tell you A LOT of things. Rely on your senses. Stop and listen for predators, prey and birds to warn you. Look out for landmarks to keep your bearings as you have no compass or indication on the map as to where you are aside from using charcoal in clear weather. Stick to the easiest, level paths at first as they lead to structures more often. And be careful what you eat, the color indicates your chances of getting sick. Also, the clothing you wear: the two slots indicate inside and outside layers. inside layers(closer to character) only matter in terms of warmth degrees while outside layers (further from character) offer damage protection, wind protection and warmth along with wetness resistance. Try not to hoard either, it WILL tire you out quicker and slow you down. I could go on forever lol. I'm on day like 200 on my second voyager run. I love this game

Regarding the story, The Long Dark lets you write your own. You go out, check your surroundings, make a plan. For example, you are running out of bullets, and want to make yourself a bow & arrows. There seems to be a forge past that railway tunnel. Go out and explore, use the forge to make your own arrows. Thats a story/mission, which is much more effective IMHO.

XD Now you can only save in survival mode if you sleep or enter a building and I think that's still pretty cool because you can't just save wherever/whenever you want, you gotta PLAN that shit.
I kinda wish more was said about Hinterland, the company that created TLD. Those guys/gals are 100% committed to making a great game! They are constantly working on this game, even after it's official release from Beta! They take and respond to all kinds of feedback and even make adjustments based on popular demand! They consistently put out newsletters and updates and keep in touch with their fans in ways that most game developers just don't. Seriously, the Hinterland team are incredible! Exceedingly patient with the constant requests for updates for new regions or chapters to the story mode while not disregarding those who genuinely offer good feedback! If any of you are going to play the long dark I have some tips for you I have survived almost 250 days in one stalker run and 111 days in a interloper run
Tip 1: you do not need to eat all the time
Only before you sleep, so you can starve yourself all day but as long as you eat before you sleep you’ll regenerate all of the health you lost from starvation this allows you to ration your food for a very very long time
Tip 2: sticks are one of the best fuel sources while you walking around pick up as many as you can and you’ll always have fuel for a fire
Tip 3: NEVER EVER WASTE TIME, for example if your cooking food and the food take an hour to cook be doing something else while the food is cooking don’t just pass time that hour is long enough to make repairs, read or even leave and go look for firewood, this takes some time to learn how to do properly but once you do it allows you to maximize your time and never waste any

I've sunk so many hours into the survival mode of this game, if you're starting out just know you will die, over and over and over again, and it will be frustrating and you'll want to give up but each time you'll learn something new that will help you get to the next day and you'll gradually learn how to survive longer, I've recently gotten to a point after maybe 120 days survived where I finally have some decent clothing and enough resources that I feel like I'm at a point where I can "comfortably" start taking big risks and venture out and explore further regions but even then I've had some very close calls.
It's definitely a slow-burn game, you only get one life each play through and the lack of base building might be off-putting for some but give it a chance, eventually you'll find a region that has an already established "base" with its own advantages and disadvantages that you can make work for you where you can fortify yourself (probably) with the help of neighbouring zones.
The main thing for me about this game is the potential it has going forward, I love survival games and I'm really looking forward to how this game develops with the story mode and what changes/extras they will add to the survival mode.

You sleep, camp out, or sit to raise stamina. You drink medicine and eat to raise health. And you sleep, drink coffee, or dead eye tonics to raise dead eye. You loot enemies or buy ammo. More cool info on the Quiet Apocalypse!
Not only is the Geomagnetic Storm a worldwide event, meaning Great Bear isn’t the only region affected, this whole game also happens during what’s essentially a second Great Depression. Supplies were already really low, so low in fact that America and Canada had to combine their economies to survive. Not much food was on the table, oil supplies were low, and most people had to learn at least some basic survival skills to keep going on. Then the First Flare hit, which is the official term for the geomagnetic storm, and the whole world went to Hell in a handbasket.
Keep in mind, this game’s apocalypse was partially inspired by that one time in the 1800s that an actual geomagnetic storm made the Northern Lights so big that you could see them from *MEXICO!* Now imagine an EMP hits the entire planet at once, the more civilized areas are in pure chaos. I think that’s why TLD is set where it is, because it would just be The Division if it wasn’t.
Heh, alright I’m done. This game is awesome!

The weather can really mess with you in this game. I was exploring around my base cave when a fog set in and I lost my bearings. After wandering around for most of the day freezing and starving I came across my own footprints in the snow. I had spent the whole time wandering around in a big circle. I froze and died before nightfall - killed by fog

This game has something no other game of its genre does! I remember playing this game one day in 2016 or 2015 I think it was, either way.. My dad had an hearth attack at home while I was playing this. Fast forward time, I still play this and I always remember the incident happening, but it was kinda like therapy and help for me back then when I obviously was scared! It's a way to get off of my thoughts and calm down, and imagining I'd be there all alone, off the grid and thoughts (though I really wouldn't want to lol). It's kinda like therapy for me. But now he's doing good, no sign of illnesses or anything :)

What a nice review! Great job.
You've definitely covered the best aspects of the game.
I've played the alpha version a long time ago and loved it. By the time I've seen this game was released on Xbox I've felt so happy! Now, more players will be able to experience what a survival game is about: Survival. I made it this morning, but the night is gonna get windier... Do I have enough supplies and shelter to make it through this night?
TLD is an awesome game, and I'm addicted to it again!

8:59 Moose are scary, you've just never lived around them. They're easily one of the most threatening out of all the ones you listed because they're the ones that are generally closer to urban areas. Also if you hit one with a car, your car will be nearly totaled but the moose will just be a bit stunned. They're also so stupid they sometimes run into PARKED cars.

Things I would like to see in The Long Dark:
    1. A Thermos. Having one HOT cup of coffee, herbal tea, or tomato soup stay HOT longer.
    2. Candles. In between not making a fire and saving my lantern oil, sometimes I just want a little bit of light to make it up to the bedroom or grab something out of storage.
    3. Stone arrowheads, a stone knife, and a makeshift whetstone. If you can consistently kill rabbits with stones, the fire hardened arrows seem useless. If there are only a few forges and ammunition benches in the game, then maybe there can be a few more 2nd tier items that are made with stones.

I think the best thing about the Long Dark is that you don’t have a lifelong goal in a plot, or a base to build, or a boss to fight… it’s that you’re just trying to survive until the next day.
It creates a more realistic experience, where your main enemy is the elements and nature. There’s no automatic turrets or armor that can make you hard to kill. Bears, wolves, and moose will fuck you up even if you have a rifle if given the chance.

I remember asking YEARS ago if they were going to add a feature where the clothing on your 3d arms changed depeding on the clothes you wear (they said yes), as well as gloves. Yet they didn't implemented it, never. It's such a shame because it breaks the immersion for me A LOT. It appears the player is in a snow environment without gloves, makes no damn sense.
