    I’m a resident of Nassau County. And you showed Glen Head. The whole of Nassau County is like that, some better than others. What you should know about Nassau County. We have 80 plus years of going out of our way to NOT be neighboring NYC. And it’s been shooting us in the foot ever since. Great video, keep up the good work.

      I’m from Hempstead and although my family had a car it only got used for my dad to go to work. Literally walked every where or took the bus. I never sat in it until we moved to Orlando.
      Once we got to Orlando we had to buy a second car because it is unwalkable city (unless you live in the expensive downtown areas which i do now.)

      What do you mean by "NOT be neighboring NYC", like they intentionally make the transit network into the city sparse?

    • @WiseAssGamer
      @WiseAssGamer Рік тому +2

      @@timwalks You could say that. The main reason why we don’t see better transit is because it’s “too much money”. Out of the many bus routes in Nassau County. A total of 3 are 24 hours. I’m not sure if you spoke to anyone while you were in Glen Head, but I’m almost certain that they would talk negatively about Queens. They may not outwardly say anything racist or classist, but you know it’s comings from there.

      @@macedaking Even when the MTA was here. It wasn’t easy to live a car free lifestyle, you were limited on where you could work or play, or whatever. I said it once and I’ll say it again. Without a car in Nassau County, it is easier to get from Nassau to NYC, than it is to get from one side of Nassau to the other.

    As someone who grew up on Long Island and never had a license, I could totally relate. Technically you could live in one of the villages (I lived in Port Jeff) and get around on foot or by transit but you would be completely disconnected from the rest of L.I. Great content!

      Its an app called TravelTime. I don't think it is very accurate, however.

    The first aerial shot you have that shows a cluster of newer tract houses with mansard-type roofs is bleh. The area looks like it's in South Carolina or some part of the Midwest or Southeast. Something about the weather, culture, terrain & history in certain sections of the US to me gives off a dismal vibe. Also, as is true of the LA/SoCal area, etc, the dreariest burbs in the NYC metro area are often 1940s-1950s tract development like Levittown. But that newer tract is another kind of unpleasant.

      Yeah, Ive seen this isolated suburban development the most in southern and midwestern states. It certainly is cheaper, but Im not sure I understand how people appreciate such vapid neighborhoods

    Are there no laws in the US about the width of sidewalks? In the EU the standard is 2.5m, but with limited space can be reduced to an minimum of 1.8m. This is the width that 2 wheelchair users need to pass each other. Seeing sidewalks the with of 2 feet gives me anxiety

    • @timwalks
      @timwalks  Рік тому +3

      If there is it, I believe its state or county dependent. There is no federal mandate I am aware of on such things.

    • @fjuvo
      @fjuvo Рік тому +3

      @@timwalks I would imagine all these narrow sidewalks go against the Americans with Disabilities act. The 1.8m minimum sidewalk in the European Union was set to allow 2 wheelchair users to pass each other. The 2.5m standard sidewalk width comes from the 1.8m + 0.5m safety margin from the road + 0.2m margin from the plot border, so 0.7m of sidewalk is added for safety reasons

      @Geotpf Рік тому +3

      There is definitely no law saying you even have to have a sidewalk. The ADA requires wheelchair cut outs at intersections, so you'll have situations where there are said cutouts but no actual sidewalk beyond it.

    I grew up on Long Island (Eastern Suffolk County) and I don’t think LI builds good walkable suburbs (a lot of places on LI don’t have sidewalks). I’m surprised you included that second example considering there are better suburban options across the US, not great per se, but better than that one in my opinion.

    • @timwalks
      @timwalks  Рік тому +1

      I agree about not building good walkable neighborhoods. But there is more to a neighborhood than walkability (at least in the US since the bar is so low). The fact that this town has some public transit options and has commercial amenities in walking distance is a huge plus for me. In most American suburbs, getting groceries means you have to get in your car and drive to costco or walmart. But I think I do stress in this video that the second town needs to improve walkable options

      @brandontaraku6081 Рік тому +2

      @@timwalks I totally agree that the bar is low, and in the grand scheme of things, that suburb is fairly good for US standards. I was just pointing out that I’ve experienced a few suburbs/suburban like areas that have better neighborhood amenities than that one. One that comes to mind is Brookline MA just outside of Boston. It’s has better walkability and density, and great access to the MBTA green line. There are some other examples, and I even think there are some suburban style neighborhoods in LA that have pretty solid neighborhood amenities (for suburban standards) despite the fact that LA as a whole city is lacking in many departments (particularly public transportation and bike infrastructure). I would say Ocean Park in Santa Monica, Venice Beach, and Highland Park are some other examples of what better suburban development looks like in my opinion. All these examples generally have denser layouts than typical American suburbs, have better walkability/access to main streets/commercial areas, better bike infrastructure, and decent access to transit lines.
      I know other channels like NotJustBikes and CityNerd have also explored this specific topic, and I do think it is an important topic to look at if we are going to fix the problems that this country has.
      Anyways, Keep up the good work!

    Pedantic word definition correction: Neither of these two areas are "cities" or "towns". They are both small parts of other cities. They are "neighborhoods" or "areas".
