🎄The Laws That Block Quaint Cities 🎄
Due to zoning and building codes, it’s actually illegal to build most of the homes that make up a Christmas Village or organize them as tightly as we do. In this episode, we are going to jump around American cities, looking at the various codes that make building a Christmas village problematic.

Noise Pollution is a serious issue in cities around the world that have adopted car centric urban planning. We often cast it aside as a minor inconvenience, but noise pollution has dangerous health impacts. Luckily, with some policy work, we can reduce noise pollution. #bikelanes #transportation #transit #urbanism #city #cities Social Media: Instagram: @i.just.walk Threads: @i.just.walk Better ...

How Cars Changed American Cities

    Unfortunately in the suburbs the old rail lines have been made into bike lanes instead of repurposing them into light rail. Sure it's great for cyclists but our road traffic is horrendous and the existing subway and rail system is not what you'd call reliable.

    Lincoln has built "bike paths" since around 1970. I know of zero biking deaths there. Off-topic babble... Lincoln also had no house numbers or dog leash law until relatively recently. Lincoln's chief of police, Domenic Arena, was on duty at Chappaquiddick. He arrested Senator Ted after he drove off a bridge, killing a woman. Lincoln, in my day,... had zero AA residents, but a number of Asians. Among them, An Wang, the fifth richest American at the time. I sold the chauffer of his stretch Mercedes limo a lottery ticket. An Wang attended all town meetings. Roger Payne, of Lincoln, popularized previously unheard whale songs. Drumlin Farm hosted a huge 60-foot wide radar antenna with a 200 mile range, and is the genesis of the Lincoln Labs /MIT DistantEarly Warning system. The missile silos were in Sudbury. We lived between those bases. Hansom Field was a Strategic Air Command base. B-52's lived there during the American war against the people of Vietnam.

    "Keep X moving": it's perpetually the same slogan, time and again, and it's an absurd one, as the only way to have a city moving (rather than remaining stuck in traffic) is to offer viable alternatives to driving. The idiots advocating against bus and bike lanes because they want to "keep the city moving" actually shoot themselves in the foot. They just suck.

  • @thndr_5468
    @thndr_5468 Місяць тому

    Biggest thing for me where I am right now are how the city doesn't give a shit about bikers. Potholes remain in bike lanes and are never fixed, the "lanes" they do have are filled with gravel and the people here are idiots that don't understand bikes and like u said don't care if you die and wouldn't even notice you under the tires of their lifted f150s. They've never ridden a bike for anything other than leisure and believe that's all they're useful for.

    White flight = living where you want to live. Stop guilting people into feeling bad for freedom of movement.

    • @timwalks
      @timwalks Місяць тому

      I recommend reading about the history of white flight. It had nothing to do with the freedom of movement. In fact it was quite the opposite, as there were many instances where the federal government refused to provide mortgages or loans to white individuals if they wanted to live in non-predominantly white neighborhoods, regardless of whether it was more cost effective. White flight wasn't a cultural trend, it was a systemic governmentally promoted initiative.

  • @arnoldroquerre6912
    @arnoldroquerre6912 Місяць тому

    The phenomenon known as "white flight" was not the main reason for Boston's suburbanization. Boston followed the British model of urbanization as opposed to the European model. In this model, success for an Englishman was defined by owning a "proper English home benefitting an English gentleman" in the countryside, away from the coal dust, noise, and congestion of British industrialized cities, which the British considered filled with the unwashed White masses of workers and miasma gas. This concept of cities was endemic in most cities in the US long before race was an issue.

    i’ve been in ktown since 2010 and right now ktown is split into 3 categories, dangerous homeless people lurking the streets, fun walks throughout the main streets, and overpriced condos and apartments.. that’s all there is here. most the newer condos and apartments complexes you showed are half vacant to this day. They usually start at $2500 for a single(no bedroom just a large single room) and go up to $3900+ monthly.. nobody can afford hose spots. i found ktown to be an excellent area to take long walks and find random people to talk to, i’ve found that a lot of randoms here are friendly

    It’s not the cost of cars that’s the issue for these people, the issue is the parking in the city, plus the stress of driving. The price to park can be more than the cost of the whole car. They could own a whole new car with the money they save by taking the train.

    In terms of transit running north-south, the K line will have an extension running through from the E line, future D line station (Wilshire/Fairfax likley) and the B line. While it won't run directly at Koreatown (it's gonna run through Mid-City and Fairfax area), residents will have more transit flexibility soon albeit with a required transfer.

    If only Joe Biden pushed for E-Bikes instead of EV's, we all might have been better off. I sold my car 14 years ago and bought a new bicycle instead. Since I retired 2 years ago I bought a shiny new E-Bike which I still do all my chores with except load on public transportation. It took some trial and error to make the switch, but it has been well worth the effort.

    Pittsburgh is rough with noise too. And the city loves to put cross walk machines every ten feet special effort to place one outside someone's window!!! Fell for the trendy apartment ad nestle in the heart of the hub bub....12 bars with in 900 ft of my front door. In this part of the city leaders love parades. When I first moved in working night shift a tuba and drums going past my bedroom window. People are paranoid everyone has car alarms that go off nightly for long periods of time. No place to park , paid lot next to my building is free till 8 am....I have 10 parking tickets. Omg the brawl crawl is brutal the next day beer bottles on my front and back steps. Random people knocking on my door at 3 am drunk and confused. But a 2 bedroom hardwood floors gas water garbage included .. huge kitchen and nice size bathrooms large living room ,cats ok no pet deposit, under $900....I wear ear plugs.

    There are a lot of reasons why Cambridge, Somerville, Brookline and beyond are independent cities and towns, but it's not "suburban sprawl and white flight." Here's something to get you started: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston%E2%80%93Brookline_annexation_debate_of_1873 Also, Cambridge has a "relatively low population density." Compared to Mumbai, sure. But of cities over 100,000 in the US it trails just NYC, Jersey City, Paterson NJ and San Francisco. It's a good deal denser than Boston.

    My commute makes much longer and is as much of a pain. I take the 78 bus from temple city at 0635, arrive DTLA (City Hall) anywhere between 0720 and 0730. At approximately 0735, I take the 92 bus to Glendale where I arrive at work anywhere between 0815 and 0835 depending on traffic, speed and passengers. Going home, I take the 501 to Memorial Park, change to the A line, go 3 stops, get out at Sierra Madre Villa Station which is also super loud (something like 12 total lanes of highway [6 in each direction]), go downstairs, get the 266 and then get off and have to walk about 3 NYC type avenues before turning onto the street by my house. At this point, I get out my flashlight because there are neither streetlights nor sidewalks and drivers are insane. If I leave work at 5pm, I rarely arrive home before 6:30pm.

    Regarding 8th Street, all those businesses are open! You just go through the back. It's mostly for safety, and Ktown businesses have a long history of closing their front doors but keeping their back entrances open. A great example is Hanbat Sulun Tang; they added a sign to their back entrance as they grew in popularity over the years.
