Turtle Hatchlings Scramble for the Ocean in Delray Beach, Florida -- Sony HXR-NX80 Video

The Sandoway Discovery Center in Delray Beach, Florida, released a half-dozen loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings into the ocean this morning. Dozens of onlookers watched as turtle conservationists demonstrated how they mark and monitor turtle nests on the beach. Then they dug up a nest that had reached its "due date" and found that the hatchlings had already hatched and left their nests. The conservationists had a half dozen hatchlings they had removed from another nest at the ready so they could show how the hatchlings scramble for the sea as soon as they dig their way out of a nest to the beach surface.
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission website, Florida's most common turtle, Loggerheads nest between April and September. Each female can lay up to 150 eggs. The eggs take 49 to 58 days to incubate. Loggerheads can grow to an average weight of 275 pounds.
