I felt like the entire season was the Penguin conning you into liking him and then him finally stabbing you in the back like he did to everyone else in the show.
When he continued to deny about killing his brothers as they were about to hurt his mother, I knew he was too far gone. Him killing Vic became obvious much earlier in the show.
I like the fact that they’re not making Oz some sympathetic villain with a tragic backstory, he’s legit evil through and through. Can’t wait to see Batman whoop his ass on the sequel
Personally, I think this is an even better genre and probably the reason I have a soft spot for villains like Slade from Teen Titans, Homelander from The Boys or Chase Young from Xiaolin Showdown. They are definitely evil but you're allowed to see that in different ways alongside a slight humanization of them that makes us see that they aren't really different from other people but some things in their nature just get them to be something you would never imagine the average Joe to become. Basically, a story about getting to know an objectively and undeniably deplorable and degenerate human being better. In a way, "Penguin" can be considered a broken person but we are allowed to wonder how much of it was exactly all because of him and his negative qualities.
Most fucked up part of Oz killing Victor is that he only did it because he also saw Vic as family. He knew that someone could use Vic to get to him and stopped that possibility before it could ever happen.
The ending with his mom looking out of the penthouse window, with a single tear running down her eyes. Paralyzed with a look of horror in her face. Oz telling her how it’s what she’s always wanted. Possibly the darkest thing DCs ever done.

I geeked out so incredibly hard when in Oz's final scene, where he's entering is own new penthouse, he's wearing a 3-piece tux with a tail coat and a top hat he never wears but sets aside on top of an umbrella before he walks inside. His wardrobe has made the full transition to the classic comic/TAS Penguin outfit, and yet its done in a way that doesn't look or seem ridiculous for who Oz has become in the show. I also love that, up until the final episode, they never blatantly came outright and said "he's crazy." His actions, both in present and past, implied there might be something seriously wrong there... but it can just as easily be chalked up to anger problems, selfishness, and a notoriously short fuse. Its important to note, that in traditional batman lore, when The Penguin gets caught and locked up, they don't throw him into Black Gate, they throw him in Akrham... Up until the final episode, its never really clear if Oz is truly delusional or if he's just a gangster. In the final episode, however.. killing victor without remorse... keeping his mother in her own personal hell while he pays his prostitute girlfriend to dress up, change her hair, and pretend to BE his mother so he can live in his fantasy.. his delusion of a boy making his mom proud.. Yeah, in the final episode its revealed how truly sick, insane, and absolutely delusional Oz is and really has been this entire time. They don't try to sugar coat it and blame his psychosis for his evil actions, and they don't try wave his psychopathy in your face and treat him as a one-dimensional bad guy... they keep you guessing the entire time as to what the real Oz is like, and they kept it until the last episode to reveal how crazy he actually is, perfectly contrasting that realisation with the introduction of the Bat Signal in the background. Absolute Masterpiece.
i think he did feel something for victor even in the end (which is why he ended up killing him lol) - like even more than his own brothers 😭 but yeah it was pretty good
@@ibby1295you're right. Oz didn't shed a single tear for his brothers. But he did for vic as he strangled him. Saying it wasn't for nothing. Vic was just too close. And after Vic said "you're my family" it sealed his fate. Family is what caused Sofia to have an upper hand. Oz didn't kill vic because he wanted to, he thought he had to. If he didn't, someone else would try later on just to get to Oz, and Oz knew he would fold just like he did for his mother. Too much of a liability, a weakness. A man is most dangerous when he has nothing left to lose.
I generally like it when Oz is portrayed as sane but incredibly callous or vengeful of the world around but if you’re going to make him crazy this was definitely the way to go. Seeing him in his complete state of insanity at the end recontextualizes so much of his earlier actions and makes the show way more disturbing.
Oz killing Vic is definitely the greatest betrayal I've ever seen in anything. It was simultaneously something I couldn't believe and made total sense to me. As for Sophia's end, I like that one a lot because its way worse then just killing her. Actually everyone around The Penguin gets a fate worse than just death. Vic is killed by his mentor whom he gave total loyalty to, Oz's mom remembers how much she hates her son right at the end and is traped in her own body as a prison, and Sophia is sent back to Arkham a place she would have rather died then gone back to, sent by they guy who killed her brother and took everything from her. The Penguin is peak villainy.
I think the point of Maroni's death is to show that Oz will never get what he wants. Just like how his mom won't be proud of him even if he is the top boss now.
yeah it showed that he didn't actually care about maroni dying because it would make his plans easier, all he cared about was being able to show his dominance and say "i beat you"
Yeah, I don't think it was a problem. If anything, seeing Oz's initial reaction was what was important. Here's this big, bad crime boss, hellbent on revenge for the guy who killed his family... and he dies in the most mundane way possible, not even giving Oz the satisfaction of killing him. The thing about Oz is that he will spin a pathetic, natural death into a calculated and fair victory on his behalf. He is a liar, a faker, and a devil.
Facts and it also reminded me of the story Oz told in the first episode about Rex “One day, guy has a heart attack and dies”. In a way I think Sal was someone Oz held to a high degree and sometimes those great beings we think of so highly don’t get taken out by a bullet or a stab wound, sometimes it’s just a bad heart.
Yeah that makes a lot of sense. Maybe I missed it, but I would've preferred if they dropped some hints that Sal had a bad heart. It was shocking when he just collapsed. I thought he injured himself while fighting Oz, or was poisoned.

Kinda feel bad for Sofia. In the beginning penguin is the reason she is in arkham for 10 years and in the end he put her back in there. Villains are not born they are made
Oz only obsesses about his mom & her approval because the imaginary competition between him & his two brothers was his first ambition in life. Oz is driven entirely by ambition & his first ambitions were "be mom's favorite." It's still his biggest one & will never be fulfilled, naturally. But it also gives him some sort of morale justification in his head, for sure. Really wonderful show, glad to see this from DC Films.
Sal’s death was supposed to feel like that. Like how it felt for Oz. They wanted his death to feel underwhelming just like how Oz did cause HE wanted to kill him, but Sal’s old age and health got to him. It made Oz mad cause he didn’t get the death he wanted

Venom and kraven aren't always villains exactly. Especially venom for so many years now literal decades hasn't been a villain. Don't know anything about morbious but again there's comic book material to go off that shows they aren't really evil. The penguin has always just been a villain

Potentially but I really feel like Oz took a liking to him, he knew too much and in turn could become a liability. Penguin wants all the credit/attention to himself so when they were on sitting on the bench talking about how “THEY” succeeded and made it out. Penguin was probably thinking “We? I didn’t know you spoke French” then killed him off. So it was for many reasons

If she dies, he has to admit that all those things he did was for himself
That ending was so beautifully gross and twisted, he turned eve into this sick memory of his mother which is weird as fuck to tell him what he wants to hear, he got what he wanted, ruined Sophia and his mothers life, successfully manipulated and got rid of victor, and got off scott free He gon be an absolute menace in batman 2
Oz used Eve as an image of his Mother the whole time. When Sofia talks to Eve and looks at the wigs, she asks her 'Oz ever seen this version of you', and Eve replies 'a couple of times but Oz doesn't like it'. Sofia then asks 'What does he like' and Eve says 'He isn't that complicated'. Freud would have loved this show 😆Oz certainly embraces his full desire to turn Eve into his Mother by the end though, another one of his goals succeeded.
The way I see it (spoilers) once she had a stroke she was dead to him, now that she can no longer feed his ego. She’s just a prop now to justify his actions which is horrifying, as she clearly wants to die
I hope we see batman roll up to the penguins penthouse in a future movie and we briefly see Bruce catch a glimpse of Ozs mom just dead and rotting. Would be kinda twisted and a big payoff for people who watches the series. This series got me way hyped for the universe that the original film didn't do but now I see the major potential of this bat. Also wtf vic you fuckin idiot should have gotten out the second time he tried to kill you early on. That hurt to watch just when you thought vic was actually going to make it and he didn't even have a chance
Killing viktor was genius. Up till now, the penguin was evil, but the audience loved him, the same way viktor loved him. Viktor is the audience. We didnt realize that what made The penguin likeable was HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH VIKTOR And HIS MOM. By killing viktor, the audience is betrayed and finally understands that Penguin is evil and sucks. He kept her hidden to the world but eventually got exposed and almost died because they found his weakness: his mom Once Vic said "we're family" that triggered something in Oz that made him realize he can't have any more emotional loose ends that his enemies could exploit.
Salvatore robbing Oz of any earned triumph by goin out realistically, and Oz's emotional reaction to it before playing it off as a victory, is a microcosm of how much more frustrated and dangerous Oz is going to become any time he's reminded of the hollowness of his achievements.
It really shows his psyche though. Like he wanted to beat Sal by himself, but he died due to a heart attack. So he did that monologue trying to convince himself that he had indeed beaten Sal. Same with his mother. He never got her acknowledgement, so he hires Eve and make her dress like his mom to get that " approval." That is why Sal had to die the way he did: to show what type of person Oz was.
I just realized, Sofia had a chance to kill Victor but decided not to. He turned the tables on her losing to Oz in the end while Oz killed him without hesitation to get closer to power without anything to be used against him. Great parallel
You would actually be surprised at how many comic book references this show has. There are smaller Easter eggs like the use of Magpie and the shop next to Penguin's apartment being named "Burgess Jewelry" which is a reference to the actor who played the Penguin in the 60s show, but what this show really does well is taking narrative elements from various pieces of Batman media and drawing thematic ties between them to create a rich and compelling story. Showrunner Lauren Lefranc listed Batman: The Long Halloween and Penguin: Pain and Prejudice as the primary inspirations, and you can see their DNA all over this show. This is how you make an excellent piece of superhero media that is true to the comics while also crafting a brilliant story in it's own right.
Some other comic book elements that were used in this show include the Penguin killing his brothers and his mother becoming a vegetable (Pain and Prejudice), Oz converting an abandoned station into a supervillain hideout, his costume wearing girlfriend Eve Karlo possibly being a homage to Basil Karlo (Clayface), Penguin getting his classic outfit, and Victor being very similar to Jason Todd, who became Robin after Batman caught him trying to steal the tires of the Batmobile. All of these references and nods are earned by the narrative and contribute to the themes of the story.
I won't spoil anything here but they did an excellent job reminding you that Oz isn't a good guy, sometimes you start to feel as if he's not really a bad guy and has his reasons, but then he does something to remind you he's not. Especially in one of the final scenes. Reminds me a lot of how the Sopranos made sure to vilify Tony, and BB with Walt
I totally agree! This show is so good just as an individual show and not even a comic book show, to the point that sometimes you get lost in the plot and are fully rooting for Oz. And then just when you forget, he does something to remind you that he’s a supervillain. The end with Vic encapsulates that perfectly. You’re happy for him, you’re happy he won… and then you hate him more than you ever did. It perfectly sets him up as an evil villain going forward in this universe, and I can’t wait to see where it goes from here

Except Oz makes Walt and even Tony to some degree look like saints in comparison. Only 1 season in and there is truly not even a chance for redemption like Walt sort of had and Tony maybe could have chosen
I saw it coming but didn’t expect it to be like this ngl. I thought it would be like last episode, leaving people behind to save his skin, but they took it to the next level and had him kill Vic with his own hands, because he couldn’t tolerate any more weakness.
I didn't see it coming but I did genuinely believe that the Penguin would become a genuine villain but I did expect Vic to at least be a loyal enforcer. This was for the best as it showed very clearly that there was no altruism in Oz's heart for literally anybody. Vic's face in the final scene of Ep 3 said it all. He knew he wasn't doing right at the time and while he started believing in Oz's lies and that Oz's presence may be a positive for him by the end of the show, we are surprised with Oz showing that he will make the wrong choices because he wants what he doesn't deserve and will do anything for that with no actual regard for anyone else and hence, Vic had to go. The Penguin in this show was in essence what we expect of the character in most Batman media. A bloody monster. Only difference was that this one started a lapdog before rising to the peak by sadistically ruining everyone else, including(in a way) his own mother.
He’s played quite a few characters lately. He was a serial killer in Dexter New Blood, he was in Gen V, he was in Detroit Become Human, he was in John Wick Chapter 4, and he voiced a few charters in Invincible.
To make another point, during the flashback with young Oswald and his brothers. When his brother got 50 bucks from the guy, Oswald wanted to blow it all for his own selfish desires but his brother wanted to give it to their mom. For a guy that seemingly cares so much for his mother, his first thought to where that 50 bucks would go, knowing how much his mom is struggling to raise him and his brothers, wanted to blow it all on what he wanted
If you rewatch the show, especially the first episode, you can catch few foreshadowings and parallels, especially about Vic. This show is a freaking MASTERPIECE.
The ending actually felt horrifying to me. In my mind, him with the mother at the top floor felt like he had propped up, almost a doll/corpse/simulacra of his mother in front of the window, to convince himself he realised -her dream- his promise of getting her a penthouse at the top floor.
1:00 basically the fan service isn’t fan service. It actually strengthens Oz’ downfall. He’s got everything but at the cost of his family, best soldier and now at the cost of his freedom because his antics have set Batman on him.
That batsignal definitely wasn't for Oz, sure he's on Batman's radar but it's not like he wasn't before. Oz is a bigger player now, but Batman didn't care about/go after the Gigantes even after Sofia destroyed Crown Point, and it's not like what Oz has done is even at the same level that the Falcones and Maronis had been doing for years and Batman never went after them. Will he face off with Batman down the road? Absolutely, but it probably won't happen in the next Batman movie.

That was literally the whole point. I don’t think a show with such amazing writing would just show the bat signal to make fans go “oh look it’s batman”. It shows us that even though he “won” the battle at a great expense he won’t win the war.
@valcastillo6777 the symbolic is that he won and got what he wanted (with some major casualties and asterisks) and he ends it with a gigantic explosion that destroys an entire neighbourhood and mass murder of mafia heads (both are things that would definitely alert batman to him btw). The batsignal at the end is supposed to show (in my opinion though) that while he won at the end of the day his elevated status and the violence he caused has put him on a path where batman will be going after him in a meaningful way. And he’ll obviously lose that. Whether it’s in the next movie or not who knows. But the signal isn’t just fan service. It shows that he didn’t actually win. And we know he’s returning for batman 2 as far as I heard
One thing that really impressed me is the recontextualizations of several characters. Particularly Sofia and Ozs Mom. Makes me look foreward to rewatches.
I Really Appreciate how It didn't fall into the 'Black Adam' Problem of turning It's Villain into a Hero in the End. It stuck to it's Guns and made sure to keep in mind that Oz is Not a Good Guy. This just makes Me more Excited for the Future of Matt Reeve's DC and I am gonna Eat this Shit Up Best DC Universe yet.
So far Nolan’s DC is still the best but Matt Reeves is definitely putting up competition. I think it’s still too early to call his the best. I’m really excited for the other villains in the second movie though and I loved the first movie.
It's fantastic to see someone else appreciate the show as much as I do. The depth of the characters, particularly Oswald, and their complex relationships truly make it an outstanding series.
The blend of crime drama and character study in "The Penguin" captivated me as well. The quality of acting was exceptional across the board, adding depth to each character and their respective stories. As for the pacing concerns, I believe that every good story requires a build-up to fully engage with the audience.

its so good, because Oz has a weird relationship with his mother in the comics too, and went into a spiral when she passed away, i cant wait to see where he goes from here (plus he took out his siblings too)
The Sopranos influence on this show is insane. Oz and Vic is literally Tony and Chris, Oz and Tony also share so many similarities they're practically the same character in a different universe.
Yeah the Penguin also speaks almost exactly like Tony. And the whole mental disorder theme is another hint about how inspired the show is by The Sopranos. It's not completely derivative cause you can feel a strong authorial imprint, yet being strongly inspired by a cult series keeps The Penguin from being a true masterpiece imo.

One thing I was absolutely amazed by how twisted and fucked up he is (besides what he did to Vic) is the fact that he never at any point admitted to killing his own brothers. He never admitted it.
This Penguin compared to how his story starts in the comics was actually brilliant. He had a true Rags to Riches moment and the show truly showed how evil The Penguin as a character actually is.
Sofia being put back in Arkham is the ultimate assault by Oz. She basically spent 10 years in hell, got out and was so close to freedom only to get dragged back to hell on earth. I think her ending is perfect for the character, and exactly what Oz would do.
I do think a character like Mr Freeze should be in the spotlight considering his only live action appearance has been in the Batman & Robin film. And Freeze is so much more than that portrayal. I'm just a sucker for well done sympathetic antagonists, what can I say.
Idk why everyone keeps on saying this. This penguin would not make a good main villain nor is he going to be the main villain. Its already confirmed that he’s only gonna have 5-6 scenes in the movie

A lot of treats to those who know about the Batman lore, read the comics or the animated series too. The Falcones and Maronis, Magpie - a villain from the comics, Eve Karlo who shares Basil Karlo's/Clayface's last name, the reporter Summer Gleason who is the reporter from the Animated Series, Sebastian Hady from the comics, Elliot Bridge which ties to Hush, clues to Harvey Dent. To a Batman fan, these were awesome references and I am gushing about it. Can't wait for The Batman Part Two.
I found Eve to be a surprisingly interesting character. The way she stays close to Oz while knowing his insanity and cruelty and then also letting Sofia try and kill him, it gave them a really interesting character dynamic. I wonder if she’ll be a part of The Batman 2.

Just like how clayface molds his face into different looks. Since I doubt this version of Batman would ever directly adapt clayface, that is a pretty cool homage.
5:05 yeah i think they could have saved that just by foreshadowing moments earlier that he had heart problems or that he had to take meds or something, and that's it, i mean he looked old, i wouldn't have questioned it either, especially if they showed he had those kinds of health problems, but yeah it's not a big deal either
Could we argue Oz killing his closest family, getting him stabbed near to death and getting him in a gang war he never wanted. These things could force an older man who has endured a hard prison life into heart failure. Cobb did make all of the happen. You could argue he was the major cause of Sal's cardiac arrest. Thus being his killer by damage over time? Idk I literally just finished the series 3 days ago and wanted to weight in 😅
one of my favourite moments was when oswald and his mom were captured, the acting from colin was insane, where he kept saying mom it was like he reverted to a child state
They had Sal die by an anticlimactic heart attack on purpose so you could see how Oz got upset when he wasnt able to actually best him straight up. Thought that was pretty obvious, Charles.
The most tragic thing is that Oz kept his mom and his girlfriend alive, but had to to kill Victor. Which implies that he loved Victor more than even his girl and his mom, he was too big an emotional liability
It was because Victor had seen him more emotionally vulnerable than any of them had. Oz didn't want anyone to see him like that, he thought it was a weakness. His girlfriend definitely sees his vulnerability in a different way, but he can't exactly kill her for that because he needs her to see his vulnerability for his twisted fantasy.

It‘s good that they built up the characters, to the point that the majority of the viewers thought Oz might be good to someone in the world and even to the point of rooting for him. The last kill was the final nail in the coffin for most people, the last 10 minutes of the series finally unmask Oz.
Saw way too many comments in a row without mentioning Cristin Milioti’s performance. She was astoundingly good and in my opinion she outshined the Penguin himself.
I feel bad for Vic, but at the end of the day, Vic chose the path in life he chose. Vic could've left the criminal life behind by leaving with his girlfriend but instead he chose to not to and wanted to peddle drugs and murder Squid and such. He faced the consequences for his actions in trusting someone like Oswald and living a criminal life.
I mean fair but we have to also remember that Vic is only like 19 maybe 20 at best. It sucks because maybe he would've realized how wrong this was. Vic just wanted to be someone. And ironically Oz tossing his ID into the river feels like Vic dies as a nobody, an unknown. Edit 11/18: After rewatching the episode it is confirmed that Vic was only 17 yrs old. He wouldn't have turned 18 for another 4-5 months.

Interesting that you say that cause that’s the arc that pattinson’s batman goes through in the movie. At the beginning he believes that criminals get what they deserve because they “chose that life” when in reality a lot of crime comes from manipulation and corrupt systems, and the world isn’t as black and white as he thought, which he comes to understand by the end of the movie.
@@campbell9825 The difference being that Vic LITERALLY had a choice unlike most poor people. He could've left with his girlfriend and started a new honest life in a city that wasn't Gotham. He literally sat there in Penguin's car and watched her leave. He could've simply got out of the car and got on the bus she was on. Maybe he could've moved to Metropolis where Superman is and had a much better life or something. But he didn't, and he paid the price for his choices. If you trust people like Oz you lose every single time.

Bro the moment he put his arm around Vic, I knew he was gonna die but the fact that he not only took his money but also threw his only Identification away, Vic dying a nobody. Also it's refreshing that we have a Villain that's not Complex or Nuanced. Penguin was always like this since he was a kid. Straight up the Devil in a Suit and Top Hat. And a Limp.
Maroni macaroni dying the way he did is actually the point; that life is brutal and even if you’re winning and all things are in your favor and you’re more powerful you will still get a fucked up awful shitty know nothing death with no celebration, no one will remember you, no one will give you what you want. It was supposed to reflect back to Penguin how fruitless his endeavor was and how hallow his view of life actually is. It’s a cheap death even though it ISNT deserved. Your feelings of why he died and how you thought it was bullshit are exactly correct and still fit. This show is fucking next level. What a great show 🎉

Personally, I think this is an even better genre and probably the reason I have a soft spot for villains like Slade from Teen Titans, Homelander from The Boys or Chase Young from Xiaolin Showdown.
They are definitely evil but you're allowed to see that in different ways alongside a slight humanization of them that makes us see that they aren't really different from other people but some things in their nature just get them to be something you would never imagine the average Joe to become.
Basically, a story about getting to know an objectively and undeniably deplorable and degenerate human being better.
In a way, "Penguin" can be considered a broken person but we are allowed to wonder how much of it was exactly all because of him and his negative qualities.

The fact that Oz took Vic's wallet was the nail in the coffin for me. Literally took his money back he gave him.
He also basically promised that Vic wouldn't die a nobody, but getting rid of his ID broke that promise.

I geeked out so incredibly hard when in Oz's final scene, where he's entering is own new penthouse, he's wearing a 3-piece tux with a tail coat and a top hat he never wears but sets aside on top of an umbrella before he walks inside. His wardrobe has made the full transition to the classic comic/TAS Penguin outfit, and yet its done in a way that doesn't look or seem ridiculous for who Oz has become in the show.
I also love that, up until the final episode, they never blatantly came outright and said "he's crazy."
His actions, both in present and past, implied there might be something seriously wrong there... but it can just as easily be chalked up to anger problems, selfishness, and a notoriously short fuse.
Its important to note, that in traditional batman lore, when The Penguin gets caught and locked up, they don't throw him into Black Gate, they throw him in Akrham...
Up until the final episode, its never really clear if Oz is truly delusional or if he's just a gangster. In the final episode, however.. killing victor without remorse... keeping his mother in her own personal hell while he pays his prostitute girlfriend to dress up, change her hair, and pretend to BE his mother so he can live in his fantasy.. his delusion of a boy making his mom proud..
Yeah, in the final episode its revealed how truly sick, insane, and absolutely delusional Oz is and really has been this entire time. They don't try to sugar coat it and blame his psychosis for his evil actions, and they don't try wave his psychopathy in your face and treat him as a one-dimensional bad guy... they keep you guessing the entire time as to what the real Oz is like, and they kept it until the last episode to reveal how crazy he actually is, perfectly contrasting that realisation with the introduction of the Bat Signal in the background.

@@ibby1295you're right. Oz didn't shed a single tear for his brothers. But he did for vic as he strangled him. Saying it wasn't for nothing. Vic was just too close. And after Vic said "you're my family" it sealed his fate. Family is what caused Sofia to have an upper hand. Oz didn't kill vic because he wanted to, he thought he had to. If he didn't, someone else would try later on just to get to Oz, and Oz knew he would fold just like he did for his mother. Too much of a liability, a weakness. A man is most dangerous when he has nothing left to lose.

I generally like it when Oz is portrayed as sane but incredibly callous or vengeful of the world around but if you’re going to make him crazy this was definitely the way to go. Seeing him in his complete state of insanity at the end recontextualizes so much of his earlier actions and makes the show way more disturbing.
Oz killing Vic is definitely the greatest betrayal I've ever seen in anything. It was simultaneously something I couldn't believe and made total sense to me. As for Sophia's end, I like that one a lot because its way worse then just killing her. Actually everyone around The Penguin gets a fate worse than just death. Vic is killed by his mentor whom he gave total loyalty to, Oz's mom remembers how much she hates her son right at the end and is traped in her own body as a prison, and Sophia is sent back to Arkham a place she would have rather died then gone back to, sent by they guy who killed her brother and took everything from her. The Penguin is peak villainy.

Yeah, I don't think it was a problem. If anything, seeing Oz's initial reaction was what was important. Here's this big, bad crime boss, hellbent on revenge for the guy who killed his family... and he dies in the most mundane way possible, not even giving Oz the satisfaction of killing him. The thing about Oz is that he will spin a pathetic, natural death into a calculated and fair victory on his behalf. He is a liar, a faker, and a devil.
Facts and it also reminded me of the story Oz told in the first episode about Rex “One day, guy has a heart attack and dies”. In a way I think Sal was someone Oz held to a high degree and sometimes those great beings we think of so highly don’t get taken out by a bullet or a stab wound, sometimes it’s just a bad heart.
Yeah that makes a lot of sense. Maybe I missed it, but I would've preferred if they dropped some hints that Sal had a bad heart. It was shocking when he just collapsed. I thought he injured himself while fighting Oz, or was poisoned.

Oz only obsesses about his mom & her approval because the imaginary competition between him & his two brothers was his first ambition in life. Oz is driven entirely by ambition & his first ambitions were "be mom's favorite." It's still his biggest one & will never be fulfilled, naturally. But it also gives him some sort of morale justification in his head, for sure. Really wonderful show, glad to see this from DC Films.

That ending was so beautifully gross and twisted, he turned eve into this sick memory of his mother which is weird as fuck to tell him what he wants to hear, he got what he wanted, ruined Sophia and his mothers life, successfully manipulated and got rid of victor, and got off scott free

Oz used Eve as an image of his Mother the whole time. When Sofia talks to Eve and looks at the wigs, she asks her 'Oz ever seen this version of you', and Eve replies 'a couple of times but Oz doesn't like it'. Sofia then asks 'What does he like' and Eve says 'He isn't that complicated'.
Freud would have loved this show 😆Oz certainly embraces his full desire to turn Eve into his Mother by the end though, another one of his goals succeeded.

once she had a stroke she was dead to him, now that she can no longer feed his ego. She’s just a prop now to justify his actions which is horrifying, as she clearly wants to die
I hope we see batman roll up to the penguins penthouse in a future movie and we briefly see Bruce catch a glimpse of Ozs mom just dead and rotting. Would be kinda twisted and a big payoff for people who watches the series. This series got me way hyped for the universe that the original film didn't do but now I see the major potential of this bat. Also wtf vic you fuckin idiot should have gotten out the second time he tried to kill you early on. That hurt to watch just when you thought vic was actually going to make it and he didn't even have a chance

Killing viktor was genius. Up till now, the penguin was evil, but the audience loved him, the same way viktor loved him. Viktor is the audience. We didnt realize that what made The penguin likeable was HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH VIKTOR And HIS MOM. By killing viktor, the audience is betrayed and finally understands that Penguin is evil and sucks. Withput Viktor or the Mom , therws nothing likeable or human about him.

Once Vic said "we're family" that triggered something in Oz that made him realize he can't have any more emotional loose ends that his enemies could exploit.
Salvatore robbing Oz of any earned triumph by goin out realistically, and Oz's emotional reaction to it before playing it off as a victory, is a microcosm of how much more frustrated and dangerous Oz is going to become any time he's reminded of the hollowness of his achievements.
It really shows his psyche though. Like he wanted to beat Sal by himself, but he died due to a heart attack. So he did that monologue trying to convince himself that he had indeed beaten Sal. Same with his mother. He never got her acknowledgement, so he hires Eve and make her dress like his mom to get that " approval." That is why Sal had to die the way he did: to show what type of person Oz was.
I just realized, Sofia had a chance to kill Victor but decided not to. He turned the tables on her losing to Oz in the end while Oz killed him without hesitation to get closer to power without anything to be used against him. Great parallel

We live in a world where a Joker project crashes and burns while a Penguin project is critically acclaimed, all before GTA VI too.
You would actually be surprised at how many comic book references this show has. There are smaller Easter eggs like the use of Magpie and the shop next to Penguin's apartment being named "Burgess Jewelry" which is a reference to the actor who played the Penguin in the 60s show, but what this show really does well is taking narrative elements from various pieces of Batman media and drawing thematic ties between them to create a rich and compelling story. Showrunner Lauren Lefranc listed Batman: The Long Halloween and Penguin: Pain and Prejudice as the primary inspirations, and you can see their DNA all over this show. This is how you make an excellent piece of superhero media that is true to the comics while also crafting a brilliant story in it's own right.
Some other comic book elements that were used in this show include the Penguin killing his brothers and his mother becoming a vegetable (Pain and Prejudice), Oz converting an abandoned station into a supervillain hideout, his costume wearing girlfriend Eve Karlo possibly being a homage to Basil Karlo (Clayface), Penguin getting his classic outfit, and Victor being very similar to Jason Todd, who became Robin after Batman caught him trying to steal the tires of the Batmobile. All of these references and nods are earned by the narrative and contribute to the themes of the story.

I won't spoil anything here but they did an excellent job reminding you that Oz isn't a good guy, sometimes you start to feel as if he's not really a bad guy and has his reasons, but then he does something to remind you he's not. Especially in one of the final scenes. Reminds me a lot of how the Sopranos made sure to vilify Tony, and BB with Walt
I totally agree! This show is so good just as an individual show and not even a comic book show, to the point that sometimes you get lost in the plot and are fully rooting for Oz.
And then just when you forget, he does something to remind you that he’s a supervillain. The end with Vic encapsulates that perfectly. You’re happy for him, you’re happy he won… and then you hate him more than you ever did. It perfectly sets him up as an evil villain going forward in this universe, and I can’t wait to see where it goes from here

I saw it coming but didn’t expect it to be like this ngl. I thought it would be like last episode, leaving people behind to save his skin, but they took it to the next level and had him kill Vic with his own hands, because he couldn’t tolerate any more weakness.
Shit didn’t even hit the fan he just killed him for no reason because the writers didn’t know what to do with Vic’s character
I didn't see it coming but I did genuinely believe that the Penguin would become a genuine villain but I did expect Vic to at least be a loyal enforcer.
This was for the best as it showed very clearly that there was no altruism in Oz's heart for literally anybody.
Vic's face in the final scene of Ep 3 said it all.
He knew he wasn't doing right at the time and while he started believing in Oz's lies and that Oz's presence may be a positive for him by the end of the show, we are surprised with Oz showing that he will make the wrong choices because he wants what he doesn't deserve and will do anything for that with no actual regard for anyone else and hence, Vic had to go.
The Penguin in this show was in essence what we expect of the character in most Batman media. A bloody monster.
Only difference was that this one started a lapdog before rising to the peak by sadistically ruining everyone else, including(in a way) his own mother.

When his brother got 50 bucks from the guy, Oswald wanted to blow it all for his own selfish desires but his brother wanted to give it to their mom. If you rewatch the show, especially the first episode, you can catch few foreshadowings and parallels, especially about Vic. This show is a freaking MASTERPIECE.
After Vic kills Squid and breaks down. Oz says it gets easier. Now knowing all Oz has done it's so chilling.
The ending actually felt horrifying to me. In my mind, him with the mother at the top floor felt like he had propped up, almost a doll/corpse/simulacra of his mother in front of the window, to convince himself he realised -her dream- his promise of getting her a penthouse at the top floor.
It was horrifying, she can’t talk or move either.
I hated the entire ending literally no pay off for all the build up just everybody loses and oz is creepy asf now

1:00 basically the fan service isn’t fan service. It actually strengthens Oz’ downfall. He’s got everything but at the cost of his family, best soldier and now at the cost of his freedom because his antics have set Batman on him.
That batsignal definitely wasn't for Oz, sure he's on Batman's radar but it's not like he wasn't before. Oz is a bigger player now, but Batman didn't care about/go after the Gigantes even after Sofia destroyed Crown Point, and it's not like what Oz has done is even at the same level that the Falcones and Maronis had been doing for years and Batman never went after them. Will he face off with Batman down the road? Absolutely, but it probably won't happen in the next Batman movie.

@IneptCardCollector why? It’s symbolic. It shows that Oz may end up at the top but he’s directly in batman’s path now. Which we all know isn’t going to end well for him. That was literally the whole point. I don’t think a show with such amazing writing would just show the bat signal to make fans go “oh look it’s batman”. It shows us that even though he “won” the battle at a great expense he won’t win the war.
@valcastillo6777 the symbolic is that he won and got what he wanted (with some major casualties and asterisks) and he ends it with a gigantic explosion that destroys an entire neighbourhood and mass murder of mafia heads (both are things that would definitely alert batman to him btw). The batsignal at the end is supposed to show (in my opinion though) that while he won at the end of the day his elevated status and the violence he caused has put him on a path where batman will be going after him in a meaningful way. And he’ll obviously lose that. Whether it’s in the next movie or not who knows. But the signal isn’t just fan service. It shows that he didn’t actually win. And we know he’s returning for batman 2 as far as I heard
One thing that really impressed me is the recontextualizations of several characters. Particularly Sofia and Ozs Mom. Makes me look foreward to rewatches.
I Really Appreciate how It didn't fall into the 'Black Adam' Problem of turning It's Villain into a Hero in the End. It stuck to it's Guns and made sure to keep in mind that Oz is Not a Good Guy. This just makes Me more Excited for the Future of Matt Reeve's DC and I am gonna Eat this Shit Up Best DC Universe yet.

So far Nolan’s DC is still the best but Matt Reeves is definitely putting up competition. I think it’s still too early to call his the best. I’m really excited for the other villains in the second movie though and I loved the first movie.

It's fantastic to see someone else appreciate the show as much as I do. The depth of the characters, particularly Oswald, and their complex relationships truly make it an outstanding series.
The blend of crime drama and character study in "The Penguin" captivated me as well. The quality of acting was exceptional across the board, adding depth to each character and their respective stories. As for the pacing concerns, I believe that every good story requires a build-up to fully engage with the audience.

The Sopranos influence on this show is insane. Oz and Vic is literally Tony and Chris, Oz and Tony also share so many similarities they're practically the same character in a different universe.

Yeah the Penguin also speaks almost exactly like Tony.
And the whole mental disorder theme is another hint about how inspired the show is by The Sopranos.
It's not completely derivative cause you can feel a strong authorial imprint, yet being strongly inspired by a cult series keeps The Penguin from being a true masterpiece imo.

One thing I was absolutely amazed by how twisted and fucked up he is (besides what he did to Vic) is the fact that he never at any point admitted to killing his own brothers. He never admitted it.
This Penguin compared to how his story starts in the comics was actually brilliant. He had a true Rags to Riches moment and the show truly showed how evil The Penguin as a character actually is.
Whenever you feel bad about your judgements, remember that IGN gave this show 5/10.

Sofia being put back in Arkham is the ultimate assault by Oz. She basically spent 10 years in hell, got out and was so close to freedom only to get dragged back to hell on earth. I think her ending is perfect for the character, and exactly what Oz would do.

A lot of treats to those who know about the Batman lore, read the comics or the animated series too. The Falcones and Maronis, Magpie - a villain from the comics, Eve Karlo who shares Basil Karlo's/Clayface's last name, the reporter Summer Gleason who is the reporter from the Animated Series, Sebastian Hady from the comics, Elliot Bridge which ties to Hush, clues to Harvey Dent. To a Batman fan, these were awesome references and I am gushing about it. Can't wait for The Batman Part Two.

I found Eve to be a surprisingly interesting character. The way she stays close to Oz while knowing his insanity and cruelty and then also letting Sofia try and kill him, it gave them a really interesting character dynamic. I wonder if she’ll be a part of The Batman 2.

These things could force an older man who has endured a hard prison life into heart failure. Cobb did make all of the happen. You could argue he was the major cause of Sal's cardiac arrest. Agatha was meh. It wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t great. It was the pinnacle of mediocrity.
The most tragic thing is that Oz kept his mom and his girlfriend alive, but had to to kill Victor. Which implies that he loved Victor more than even his girl and his mom, he was too big an emotional liability

It was because Victor had seen him more emotionally vulnerable than any of them had. Oz didn't want anyone to see him like that, he thought it was a weakness. His girlfriend definitely sees his vulnerability in a different way, but he can't exactly kill her for that because he needs her to see his vulnerability for his twisted fantasy.

It‘s good that they built up the characters, to the point that the majority of the viewers thought Oz might be good to someone in the world and even to the point of rooting for him. The last kill was the final nail in the coffin for most people, the last 10 minutes of the series finally unmask Oz.

I feel bad for Vic, but at the end of the day, Vic chose the path in life he chose. Vic could've left the criminal life behind by leaving with his girlfriend but instead he chose to not to and wanted to peddle drugs and murder Squid and such. He faced the consequences for his actions in trusting someone like Oswald and living a criminal life.
I mean fair but we have to also remember that Vic is only like 19 maybe 20 at best. It sucks because maybe he would've realized how wrong this was. Vic just wanted to be someone. And ironically Oz tossing his ID into the river feels like Vic dies as a nobody, an unknown.
Edit 11/18: After rewatching the episode it is confirmed that Vic was only 17 yrs old. He wouldn't have turned 18 for another 4-5 months.

Interesting that you say that cause that’s the arc that pattinson’s batman goes through in the movie. At the beginning he believes that criminals get what they deserve because they “chose that life” when in reality a lot of crime comes from manipulation and corrupt systems, and the world isn’t as black and white as he thought, which he comes to understand by the end of the movie.

He could've left with his girlfriend and started a new honest life in a city that wasn't Gotham. He literally sat there in Penguin's car and watched her leave. He could've simply got out of the car and got on the bus she was on.

But he didn't, and he paid the price for his choices. If you trust people like Oz you lose every single time.
