  • I never really liked the neck on the Classic Vibe Jazzmaster, but a subscriber has graciously sent me a J Mascis neck. Time to install it on the CV Jazzmaster!

Nice work David, and glad you enjoy it. I was surprised to find out that the neck was thinner than the CV neck but so it goes; at least it wasn’t a deal breaker. I use 11 gauge strings and you probably use 10’s, so that may explain why you would need to work on the nut slots. Anyway, the TUSQ XL nut is self lubricating, so that will be one less thing to have to think about or fuss with. BTW, you did pronounce my name correctly. Happy to see a “case queen” transformed into a “player!”

Actually, I use 9s. The band I play in does quite a bit of country and I do all kinds of pedal steel bends. Lighter strings help with that. At some point I'll try the 11s you sent to see how those work. Thanks again Esau!

@@anotherheadlessdemo Wow, 9’s are a different choice for a jazzmaster, but I get it.

I had 11s on the first Jazzmaster I owned. It was brutal, at least for me! Perfect for surf though.

I might just be inspired to switch necks between my Affinity Jazzmaster and my new CV Jazzmaster.

    This is very interesting!
What do you think are the differences between the two necks -beyond the satin finish?
Do they have different profiles are they the same width of the nut?

      @anotherheadlessdemo  Рік тому +1

The nut on the J Mascis is wider than the CV. It's really noticeable side by side. The profile seems to be similar or identical, at least I can't tell the difference playing the two.

It sounds nice from here, what do you think? Also is the original cv neck too wide for your taste? I think I want one.

The width of the neck wasn't a problem in terms of playing. It was the gloss neck and the feel of the frets I didn't like.

The JM neck is wider at the nut. I much prefer that. For me though, the feel of the frets are paramount.

I have the same feelings aboot the stock neck of my cv jm. I'm thinking about a neck swap to a player series jazzmaster one.

I haven't played a Player series Jazzmaster, but I've tried a Player Strat and Tele and thought the frets were poorly done. The J Mascis frets and neck have a much better feel without the sharp fret ends. My two cents.

I am not sure if Fender makes a decent neck other than the J Mascus.

I haven't played any of the more expensive Fenders. My first Telecaster was a late 90's Mexican Nashville. It had a great neck and much better than any lower to medium priced Fenders I've played recently. Same goes with the J Mascis.

@@anotherheadlessdemo I have a 2016 Mexican Telecaster the neck is okay but I wish it was a bit wider. I only wish it was not such a light maple color. I have a Squire esquire with a neck that has absolutely the best fret work of any guitar In have seen but the neck is so narrow it is hard to play. My next is a Squire Starcaster I LOVE that guitar it is so comfortable but the neck is also too narrow at the nut. I had a wider neck made for that guitar which is now in the painting process and will be installed next week. I can not wait to play that.

Someone asked about the width of the necks (CV vs JM). The JM is slightly wider. I had been looking at a Squier Esquire although I've never played one. Maybe I'll put that purchase on hold!

@@anotherheadlessdemo I wish you lived near me I would let you try Squire Esquire. I do love everything else about the guitar. I am very comfortable with the Gibson and Epiphone 43mm Necks. The Squire Esquire in mm is 42mm at the nut and 42.65 at the first fret. I am in USA but comparing to Gibson I use mm.

I've only played an Esquire once, and I was surprised how many sounds I could get out of that one pickup!
