Oh my days. You couldn’t imagine anything like that happening in an area like this. And to think this guy was released to try to start again. Absolutely horrific. x

I was at college in Bilston that night when the shootings happened. When I returned home it was dark and the police had cordoned off the road near the pylon in Beaconview Road where I was living. Floodlights had been set up along the canal embankment, etc. We did not know what had happened or whether the gunman would try to return home later. I had a very uneasy night. When you live close to or know the area so well it made me realise how inaccurate television and the national papers are at reporting on things. They made a lot of mistakes in what they said at the time.
Very true Stephen those who lived in and around the area always know more than whats reported -. I suspect Williams had driven that way on his way towards Wednesbury
I am really enjoying your videos. So is my mother, who is 93. They are very informative and I have learned a lot from you about places with which I am very familiar. It is a pity that West Bromwich has allowed to decline or demolished so much of its heritage that many generations of my family helped build. In 1973, I was a trainee Architect working for West Bromwich Corporation at Wigmore (now demolished). West Bromwich then was a proud town with a great long High Street, new libraries, health centres, fire station, schools and felt positive. In 1974, there was the local government change, and Sandwell emerged. West Bromwich went into decline and, in my opinion, been very poorly governed since then. We must remember our history before the 1970s. Keep up the excellent work, Phil. You are doing a brilliant job of telling our story.
I worked at Kenrick & Jefferson when this happened, I was an apprentice and Phillip was a admin trainee in the Engineering office. When we got to work the following morning a rumour started to circulate around the company that he had been shot and killed, which was hard to believe because in those days there were no mobile phones or social media, so just radio, tv and word of mouth. Such a tragic event and unbelievable what happened after he was released from Broadmore.
As a Charlemont kid I remember it happening and me and my mates going down on our bikes the next day to have a look. Remember the bullet holes around the doorway I think.
Hi Phil those poor people i can't understand how or why they would release this very dangerous and Unstable individual. I found this sad and interesting all the best Paul
I remember this , I was only 4 years old at the time. A friend of my grandads was actually a bin man emptying the bins of the house next door as the incident happened he had to run for cover to get away from the chap , I think the dispute was caused by loud music being played as his mom wasn’t very well.
When you walked up Wyndmill Crescent in a previous walk, there was a murder 3 doors from me in 2018, and then another one 3 months later on Beaconview Road by the tall block of flats
Gruesome 😢. No one ever thinks these things will happen on their own doorsteps, when they do it shocks to the core. A quiet person 😳whilst quietly making bombs in his bedroom 🤨
I worked at same place as Phil Burkett in the 70s He worked in the offices if i remember at K&J ... he got me into.electronic music and we went to see Tangerine Dream at the Odeon in brum...I think he didn't see eye too eye with this neighbour but i.never questioned it.I had left K&J by the time this happened came as a shock.
Many thanks for this floyd its good to get a bit of background - as an aside im also into this type of music. TD was my first exp. of this sort of music then Kraftwerk, jean michel jarre and now my current favourite is Ulrich Schnauss.
