      It would be a very humbling conversation to discuss with a Protestant Pastor the highs and lows of converting to Orthodoxy. I think of my baptist pastor and how he was in his 30's like myself and how even if he realized that his faith was changing that his family and himself would be put in a difficult financial situation and how his father was a big part of the church and how that would affect their relationships.

      18 Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,

      Humans even with The Holy Spirit & apostolic succession still go wrong. And eastern orthodox is not immune to that
      1)Peter was not perfect human nor was he a perfect disciple
      2)He sank down while walking on water
      3)Our Lord said to peter get behind me satan
      4)Peter reject our Lord 3 times
      5)Our Lord rebuked Peter for calling fire from heaven
      6 Our Lord rebuked Peter when he cut of the soilders ear
      7 Paul rebuked Peter for being hypocrite because he was acting different in front of Jews and different in front of gentiles.
      8 Moses messed up, and he was a important part of Bible ( that's why he never entered the promised land),
      9 David messed up ( and he has the Holy Spirit),
      10 King Soloman messed up,
      11 Saul messed up and God regretted the decision (1 Samuel 15:10-11).
      Hatrick (Saul then David then Soloman back to back messed up)
      12 The apostles run away a day before Lord Jesus got locked up.
      13 The early church messed up Rev 2:18-20, 1 Cor, Galatians.
      14 Apostle John when receiving Revelation worshiped an angel and the angel said "see you do not do that. Worship GOD" Rev 22:8-9
      15 Paul and Barnabas both had a sharp disagreement on John Mark( Acts 15:36-41). And remember that both were Apostles filled with Holy Spirit.
      16 Church in Rev 2:1-6 Lord Jesus Himself said to the church of Ephesus that "I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars" but guess what that church still had problems and Lord also pointed that out "Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love......" So as you can see Churches can do Biblical & unbiblical things at the same time.
      If these people could mess up, why do you think the eo church wouldn't mess up.

      The catholic church is the one true church outside which there’s absolutely no salvation. Orthodoxy position has completely been refuted numerous times on all fronts by councils, scriptures and church fathers. Orthodoxy is nothing short of false religion, schism, and heresy and unless you repent and return to the church of Christ the Catholic Church you’ll perish in the lake of fire

    Great audio essay man. Me and my (ex-Catholic) girlfriend have been blessed to be baptized in the Orthodox Church last saturday on the 27th of April on the feast day of St. Lazarus, officially leaving my Calvinist upbringing and roots. Sadly my still protestant family believes it to be merely religous lunacy/fanaticism, rather than a well thought out search for God and the love of God. Despite efforts to explain and clarify my choices and actions, their hearts remain hardened. They will not hear a word about faith, seeing it through the lens of national/cultural identity, rather than seeing faith through the lens of personal conviction, aka why does one believe in what he believes. I pray that they will one day understand. God bless.

      Colossians 2:18
      18 Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,
      You cannot go to Father through saints nor mary, you can only go to the Father through Lord Jesus Christ= John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
      Ephesians 2:18 For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.
      Holy Spirit intercedes for us=Romans 8:26
      26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
      And CHRIST as well=Romans 8:34

      46 While He was still talking to the multitudes, behold, His mother and brothers stood outside, seeking to speak with Him. 47 Then one said to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak with You.”
      48 But He answered and said to the one who told Him, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?” 49 And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! 50 For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.”.
      Mark 3:35 For whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and mother.”
      John 19:26-27
      26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home. ( Jesus basically said John is the son of mary, and mary is the mother of John from that time onwards).
      By the way sarah is the mother of all proof=Galatians 4:21-26.

    seems like all protestants their path to Orthodoxy is the same.
    Since I was 4 I was raised as a pentacostal evangelical. And for some reason i never felt at home there, I always felt like something was missing. And the older I got, the more I got to understand the arguments, beliefs and the view of evangelicals. And thus also began to disagree with it more and more.
    Biggest revelation I had, was that nobody knew Christian history before the reformation, which to me was a massive red flag.
    "we are the most new branch of Christianity, there for we are correct" and "Anyone who pays respect to Mary is an idol worshipper, she is not the mother of God", were also the things that really made me question that Church.
    Thanks to the person who posted Mechaloschemos chants on youtube, otherwise I might not have encountered Orthodoxy at all, those years ago.

    Hey Bud, great video. I was waiting till my last comment in order to have something really important to say. This content is pure gold, even knowing that you have pointed just a few part of your convertion, because there is so much things that came along that we cannot even explain, remember, or transmit. When you know, you know. We try to bring those testimonies to each other, risking to forgot details, but we try. I honestly would like to bring a full conversation into this comment section, but I know it's not possible, but I would like you to know that you're one of that person that you could talk for hours. Here in Brazil we have a massive Roman Catholic tradion, inherited from portuguese. Orthodoxy is almost inexistent over this side, and the majority of Orthodox churches belong to russian patriarchy (which I have some issues regarding the relation between KGB and church leaders). My family is from Roman Catholic tradition, and I suffered a lot of pressure since I left to Baptist. Some of my struggles reffers to pray to saints, virginity of Mary, and other (that still exists in Orthodoxy, but not related about assumption or coronation). I know that thelogy is not about to fit our believes or personal views on the scripptures (it's the exact oposite), but as you pointed Lewis, he had I lot of doubts, because he saw good arguments on Roman, Lutherans, Anglicans, et cetera (this is my "thorn in the flash"). I'm visiting a Lutheran church this sunday. Thank you (and sorry by my english).

    I'm beginning to understand that every denomination exists today via "doctrinal development" or if the church body is ancient like Orthodoxy or Rome, there is still doctrinal development. The question is; which process of doctrinal development is your conscience held captive to? Rome has a process. Orthodoxy has a process. All others have a process etc. Which process was superintended by the Holy Spirit? Each development seems to be a reaction to historical circumstances...

      The general principle is that Christ has conquered death. This is what my logo is in reference to; it is a simplification of the icon of the crucifixion. In it, one sees Christ hanging on the cross with a skull underneath. According to Jewish tradition, “Golgotha,” meaning the place of the skull, is where Adam was buried. Christ, being the new Adam, succeeds where Adam failed. There’s a video I’d recommend called “The Story of Relics” by a channel named Patristix; it goes into the history of this imagery and how it being considered “dark” today is essentially because it was co-opted and subverted from the early Christians. Hopefully this helps some!

    Can someone please explain the skulls and dark imagery around online Orthodoxy? I’m trying to introduce my girlfriend to the church and it kinda threw her off. I said to her that maybe it’s symbolism for the fact that we no longer fear death, but it seams like an odd cultural development.

    • @untoages
      @untoages  7 місяців тому +3

      It’s a good question. In my case, it’s two-fold. It’s partly symbolic, partly design aesthetic. I drew inspiration from “Death to the World” when it comes to the graphic design for this channel, if you’re familiar with that. With regard to the logo, it’s a simplified version of the crucifixion icon. Many renditions of this icon show Christ on the cross with a skull underneath. This symbolizes 1. The Jewish tradition that Golgotha, the place of the skull, literally had Adam’s skull buried there and 2. Being that Christ is the new Adam, He conquered death by the cross. So the logo is taking inspiration from the theology of that icon. Hope this helps!

    Jesus predicted the fall, and taught us in Luke 11:27 And it happened, as He spoke these things, that a certain woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts which nursed You!” 28 But He said, “More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” From Jesus own words, mere believers are better than the Theotokos.
    We would know the apostasy by those who elevated Mary. It was prophetically expected by the passage above, and the false believers would do it anyway. The centrality of paganism was belief in a Queen of Heaven. Inanna, Isis, Astarte, etc. If you find a Queen of Heaven, you are a pagan even if you call her Mary.

    Augustine might be the greatest evil in the history of written world influence. He argued for infant damnation and righteous persecution. See City of God, Book 1 Ch. 26. He is a father of Catholicism and Luther and Calvin doubled-down on being pro-Augustinian. Christianity begins where Augustinianism ends. John Milton's Areopagitica is the best exposition of that.

    • @the4gospelscommentary

      St Augustine is one of the most important theologians of the early church. You are correct that he was a Roman Catholic, but that is only your implicit admission that Roman Catholicism was the religion of the early church.

    • @untoages
      @untoages  6 місяців тому +1

      Well, I’d be careful with thinking that. St. Augustine is still considered a saint in the Orthodoxy Church, and the councils revere him as a Father of the Church, even. Still, he did get a lot wrong and made a lot of retractions later in life. I would just be cautious not to fall into the extreme on either side.

    • @carltonhobbs
      @carltonhobbs 6 місяців тому

      @@the4gospelscommentary Augustine invented theology to explain post-Apostolic accretions & innovations and attempt to save the dying Roman Empire. Origin first imagined a justification of the new practice of infant baptism by inventing the new idea of original sin, which Augustine would make into a doctrine. What Origin's imagination created to tolerate, Augustine's theology fused it into a new mandate. Early Roman catacombs record that youth near death would be given baptism, but it wasn't something given at birth. The justification for infant baptism (infant damnation) was truly an evil innovation. Even Judaism records infants were not given the mikvah because they were not impure. (Talmud Yevamot 47a) Such was the innovation of when Christianity paganized, (1 Timothy 4)

    • @the4gospelscommentary
      @the4gospelscommentary 6 місяців тому

      @@carltonhobbs You have no evidence for these wild accusations. The doctrine of original sin is taught in the Bible, and by all of the Church Fathers, not just Augustine and Origen.
      The practice of infant baptism was widely spread in the early church, and while it's true that baptism was delayed in some parts of the church, it was not because they didn't believe in original sin. Rather, the argument was that it is better to wait until a person makes a conscious decision against sin, otherwise those baptized in their infancy will just fall in sins again in their youth, and then no baptism remains for them. You can agree or disagree with this line of argumentation, but you cannot use it as a supposed "proof" that there was no belief in original sin in the early church.
      Also, on your view, it would make no sense even to baptize those infants that are in danger of death, since there is supposedly no sin in them that they need to be cleansed of. So your admission that infants in the danger of death were baptized, is evidence of the early Christian belief in original sin.

      @@untoages Augustine is revered by several contemporary saints - Jerome, Pope Celestine, Prosper - as one of the greatest Christian teachers.
      In the Second Council of Constantinople, Augustine is named together with the other great Fathers, whose writings are declared as safe to follow: "We further declare that we hold fast to the decrees of the four Councils, and in every way follow the holy Fathers, Athanasius, Hilary, Basil, Gregory the Theologian, Gregory of Nyssa, Ambrose, Theophilus, John (Chrysostom) of Constantinople, Cyril, AUGUSTINE, Proclus, Leo and their writings on the true faith."
      Nothing at all is mentioned, that we need to be any more careful about Augustine's writings, because of his supposed "innovations", or later retractions. As a matter of fact, since you mentioned retractions, can you name any SUBSTANTIAL retractions that Augustine had to made?
