    CORRECTION NOTE: I managed to delete a text overlay that pointed out the A6600 has in body stabilisation and eye AF in video, both of which are slight differences to the A6400, but otherwise the comparison to the A7C is similar. Thanks for watching, like, subscribe and let me know thoughts in the comments:)

    I just upgraded from an A6100 to the a7C and like anyone who has seen a Michael Jackson music video during Halloween, I'm thrilled. Catalyst Browse is phenomenal and just down right mind blowing. I got the 28-75 f2.8 Tamron and it's my new favorite lens.

    To me, I think the Tamron 17-70 really raised the bar for APS-C, and especially the a6400. Having that fixed 2.8 at such a focal zoom range is really a game changer for cropped sensor cameras. Also, the ISO capabilities of the a6400 is pretty damn good, too, and so..... I often struggle with upgrading, but I am never unhappy with the results of what I am shooting, and so... I'm sure at some point I'll upgrade, but probably not because I really need to. ;) It never ends.

    • @dbvares8745

      Hey Rock, thanks for sharing the great insights:) That Tamriel is definitely on my wish list when funds allow - I hear the stabilisation is good too which is important for me. I’m working on a low light comparison of the zv-e10 and a6400 now and it’s interesting to see the high iso performance as I’m running tests!
      As always, if your current gear is working well then upgrades might be nice, but wait a bit longer and there’s probably a bigger upgrade coming:) As you say, it never ends 😂

    Not a fan of comparing such a wide price gap. We're talking about 2 very different price points. With 1 being a hybrid apsc and the other being a hybrid full frame. We're asking if you should buy a really good hobby camera or a professional entry to mid-level camera. Maybe looking at it as a one-time buy and keep for 10 years. I can see the a7c being a good option. But if you factor in the much much higher cost of the body and the higher price lens. You'd come out much better with the A6400. I think it would have been better to compare the a6600 here. And even then it would be hard to justify going to the a7c unless you plan to make a living with it. Maybe an A7iii would make for a better comparison for the class of camera that the a6400 or a6600 are.

I immediately bought the SmallRig cage with the amazing silicone handle and it is WAY MORE COMFORTABLE to grip now. Used is on a tripod wide shot on a big choir festival while I did run and gun with my A camera. Same colour science so no colour matching to do. Highly recommended!!!

Question- I already have an a6400 with a sigma 16mm 1.4. would it make sense to stay with this kit as a beginner youtuber and maybe invest in a drone or a gimbal for a better variety of shots instead of marginally improving the talking head shots with a small audience size?

    Hello DB Vares,
    Love your channel.
    I have a question. I'm on a fence of buying a camera for my Casual Filmmaking and doing some videos on the go while I travel.
    Few years ago I purchased Panasonic Lumix G85 with kit lens, and returned it the next day, because the video quality was comparable, almost the same with my smartphone. So I want to risk again and try going with Sony, but I'm not sure what to choose.
    I love how you can get ultra-wide with FF A7C, and I don't seems to find a Speed Booster for the ZV-E10.
    So here are my options:
    1) Get ZV-E10 with kit lens + Sigma 16mm 1.4 + Gimbal
    2) Get A7C with kit lens and maybe a lens down the line.
    I shoot mostly videos, sometimes photos. As far as I know image quality between a6400 and ZVE10 is almost the same.
    What route would you recommend going? I know A7C is better camera, but is it $1,000 better?
    I want to keepy camera long-term, and I'm scared that If I purchase ZVE10 and Sigma Trio, they would be redundant when I decide to go FF because I think APSC is going to give me the same image I get on my Samsung Smartphone.
    And yes, you can use APSC lens on A FF, but what's the point if the FOV is narrow.
    Looking forward for your reply.

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  2 роки тому +1

      Hey iFA, thanks for the kind words and interesting Q.
      And apsc camera will destroy a smartphone for image quality and bokeh in many situations so I wouldn’t worry about that. Apsc isn’t far off full frame and has some advantages like price, lens size, weight etc
      I wouldn’t worry about zve10 becoming redundant you can use apsc lenses on full frame anyway so those won’t lose any utility. Generally camera gear holds some resale value so you’d always be able to get a reasonable chunk of cash back if choosing to upgrade later.
      So based on what you’ve said I think zve10 would be a good match for the use you describe:) Hope that helps!

    Hey brother. I enjoy your videos and I'm subbed! There's a video I was watching about APSC, vs. full frame, medium frame, large frame, in a topic entitled "film making and it's history". The UA-camr talks about how relatively the APSC and Full Frame are not so different. Going to medium and large format. Now that's a drastic difference in size. I think the push to go the full frame route may be due to some camera manufacturers using marketing strategies. What do you think about that? Thanks for your videos!

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Francis, thanks for watching and sharing the genuinely intriguing question!
      I think it’s all relative. There will be people who create amazing content on smartphones-the nature of what they shoot means the constraint that make you or I want different cameras and lenses won’t impact them so what we see as upgrades wouldn’t impact their use case.
      Change what the creator cares about/notices/nature of what they make and aps-c could be perfect. Especially if low light or extra bokeh don’t matter too them. It’s all about where they feel constrained and if that sensor size doesn’t limit them then there’s no need to upgrade.
      Jumping to full frame is, as you say, quite incremental in some areas. However while the jump to medium format might be more significant it seems like the price of bodies, lenses, gimbals etc would be just as noticeable if not more so.
      Very simplistically a bigger sensor should help low light and bokeh amongst other things - I love shooting with both so I’d love to get some medium format gear one day - but I’d be lying if I said I felt constrained with full frame so there’s no urgency there for me - others could legitimately have a totally different perspective.
      As for marketing: definitely some truth there. A good business will always segment its products o reach as many people as possible in the market and the more you convince to upgrade over time the better so many will get things they like the idea of but maybe don’t fully utilise - I’m probably guilty of that with some stuff but I always try to grow into any gear I invest in 😆
      Value wise full frame is definitely a jump - systems like Sony where lenses are usually across aps-c and full frame help a bit though. Plus for me I’d rather spend a bit more on an a7c than an a6600 to get the bigger sensor, catalyst stabilisation and flip screen. If the only difference were sensor size I might have made a different call.
      Anyway sorry for the stream of consciousness super long answer but there’s a few thoughts 😆 Let me know yours and any other Qs and thanks again for the fascinating topic 😁👍

I am looking to get into wedding videography and need a camera, I want one that will last me a long time, I am thinking of getting the A7C with the kit lens for now and then upgrade the lens over time or getting the A6400 with a bit better lens from the word go? My current thinking is the full-frame allows for far better video quality potential down the line with quality lens whereas the A6400 has its limitations with the small sensor irrespective of the lens. Which would you suggest though?

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 роки тому +5

      Hey Robin, thanks for watching and the great question:)
      I’d say the benefits of full frame can get over emphasised sometimes. There’s definitely and advantage for bokeh and low light potential (both of which I love so full frame is my preference 😂) but it’s possible to get great images with either. However if you’re buying for the long term and you care about those things then full frame is the way to go. The bokeh especially can be confusing since the f number of a lens on a crop sensor is not equivalent to the same f number on full frame - ff will always give more blur: this is how I try to explain that factor: ua-cam.com/video/gxvFJgCxEQQ/v-deo.html
      I’d say the fact that full frame can use both its own and crop sensor lenses for video is another advantage which I use quite often. If you wanted a flexible zoom lens with the a7c you could consider something like the crop 18-105 which I get a lot of utility from, for instance: ua-cam.com/video/LQxEcfo4jW4/v-deo.html
      As for the a7c specifically I’d prefer that for weddings for a couple of reasons beyond sensor size: you get the fully articulated screen rather than a flip up screen. If you’re shooting high angle or portrait orientation shots it’s just waaaay better.
      You also get a larger battery which should be beneficial for longer shoots.
      You also get gyro stabilisation as an option, which you don’t with the a6400. For reducing reliance on a gimbal or smoothing handheld shots this is really great: some examples of how that works in practice here: ua-cam.com/video/RB-tWQxzQoM/v-deo.html
      Sorry for the long response but hopefully some thoughts that are helpful:) let me know any other questions, consider subbing if you like this sort of content and have an awesome day 💪👍

      @@dbvares8745 The electronic viewfinder isn’t a strong point, either. Without a center hump like other A7 cameras, the EVF is pushed to the left corner. As a result, it’s small and lacks a decent-sized eyecup. The resolution is also not great at 2.36 million dots. It does improve on the A7 III’s EVF by doubling the refresh rate to 120 Hz, but because of the small size and wide magnification, it’s not as pleasant to use.

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 роки тому

      Great question! so I’d say for a music video having a zoom lens which covers multiple focal lengths is probably going to be most helpful since you can get a variety of shots with one lens.
      From the ones I’ve tested I’d say the 18-105 is a good choice for crop or full frame bodies: ua-cam.com/video/LQxEcfo4jW4/v-deo.html
      And I haven’t tested too many full frame zoom lenses, but the A7C kit lens, 28-60, did a very solid job for video in my experience: ua-cam.com/video/5R5QZzRBwBI/v-deo.html

    Do you think I should get the m50 with the sigma 16 or the a6400 with the kit lens (for vlogs and talking head)?
    Also is it better when starting a UA-cam channel to spend more and get the a7c with the kit lens and zero other gear or the a6400 with the sigma 16 and some nice mics and lighting.
    I can stretch my budget to a maximum of 2100$ but I am kinda afraid of putting this amount into something idk nothing about and idk how to use cameras, this is why I asked about m50 or a6400 at first to keep it under 1000.
    What are your thoughts

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Georges, sorry for the slow reply-hectic times with day job and non YT life just recently 😆
      So I’d definitely agree with keeping to a smaller budget until you’re confident in your understanding of cameras and techniques. Full frame stuff like the A7C is great but there will be plenty of people who don’t use the full potential of that kind of gear and are therefore better off saving money on something which will give equally nice results for their use case.
      I’d say in terms of end results for talking head: get audio sorted first; a cheap lavalier mic will be a solid start although a shotgun or condenser mic are also good. Again jumping to even cheaper options with these kinds of dedicated mics will be a big upgrade over the built in mics of a phone or camera, after that spending more for nicer mics will give less and less noticeable improvement so a good value dedicated mic is a nice balance for getting started.
      I’d then say some simple lighting and experiments with your space would actually be the next most noticeable thing to improve your video quality. I did an experiment using just a smartphone torch and some lighting techniques with results I liked a surprising amount: ua-cam.com/video/bNFSYdgmhV8/v-deo.html and a review of what you can do with one super cheap LED light here: ua-cam.com/video/tIFUPxvCtUY/v-deo.html
      As for gear: if your just doing talking head stuff I’d say an M50 with the sigma will give nicer visuals than the A6400 and kit lens. However from the little I know about the M50 I think it has a pretty significant crop when shooting in 4K, and not the greatest autofocus. I can’t remember for sure but there was a time where cannon cameras weren’t supporting shooting at 24fps either. The A6400 has none of these problems so could be a better option depending on your use case, especially if I’m right about that 4K crop. You could also consider the ZV1, which gives similar results to the A6400 with kit lens but has the advantage of great portability and a few extra features. I did a side by side of those here in case helpful: ua-cam.com/video/D-PPIus5-DI/v-deo.html
      Sorry for the super long answer but hopefully that helps! I’ve likely missed some points so let me know if you have any other Qs. Otherwise thanks for watching, consider subbing if you enjoyed and have an awesome weekend 💪👍

    Personally, I don’t see the a7c being the winner in the category of lens options. There simply are more options in lenses for the APS-C bodies than for full frame bodies, when looking at compatible lenses which can produce images at the intended resolution for the respective body.

    • @MrCowfood
      @MrCowfood 3 роки тому +1

      You can use emount apsc lenses on the a7c. And ff emount on a6400. So they actually have the same # of lenses. The difference is the sensor size giving the a7c a wider range of 'crop' especially in the ff lens dept

    • @daniel.francisco
      @daniel.francisco 3 роки тому +3

      @@MrCowfood There are more options in lenses for a crop e-mount body than for a FF e-mount body, when looking at compatible lenses which can produce images at the intended resolution for the respective body. For example, either the APS-C Sony 50mm f1.8 OSS or the FE Sony 50mm f1.8 on the a6400 will produce the same angle of view and roughly a 24mp raw file. However, only one of these lenses will produce an image which utilizes the full intended resolution on the a7c; the crop mode will leave you with only about an 11mp file. Because of this drastic compromise in resolution, most working photographers and even hobbyists will not accept an APS-C lens as a compatible match for the a7c when shopping for available glass.

      Hey both, thanks for the insightful comments and dialogue:) Daniel is right about being optimised for resolution from a stills photography perspective. The focus here (and across the channel) is mainly videography where the disconnect between 4K (and even 1080p) is already significant compared to the full stills resolution of both cameras / lens setups.
      For video I’ve struggled to notice any appreciable difference in 4K even on large displays when using lenses interchangeably between full frame and aps-c
      For photography I suspect the disconnect is more noticeable!
      From a video perspective I’ve therefore had a similar experience to Mr C where i get good results without any noticeable issues:)

      Hey Doc, that depends entirely on what your use case is. The zv1 and a6400 definitely have some advantages vs the m50 but if what you have already is working well for you then it’s important to work out what the upgrade would achieve.
      What are you shooting most and what are the constraints you’re finding with the m50? A bit more info and I can give some more useful thought:)

      @@dbvares8745 Hey, thanks for the quick reply. Foremost I use the M50 to shoot some Shortfilms and Vlogs. For me the disadvantages of this Camera are in first place the cropping in 4K and there aren’t as many lens options as there are for the Sony a6400. The only „problem“ with the a6400 is that there isn’t any Image stabilization, but I own a DJI RSC2 which is a very good Gimbal.
      Greetings from Austria 🇦🇹

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 роки тому

      Ah thanks Doc, that makes a lot of sense. For me I’d say the a6400 is a great shout if you get a lot of use from interchangeable lenses and don’t mind a gimbal setup when vlogging. If you don’t need quite as many looks the zv1 could be an even better option: more compact, better stabilisation including with gyro data and a more versatile flip screen. Plus neither have the 30 min record limit I believe the m50 has which would drive me crazy 😂
      So I’d say either a6400 or zv1 could be a god choice with the importance of lens selection and portability probably being the key decider between the two.
      Hope that helps and let me know if you end up grabbing one:)
