- There are many ways you could light your subject on a location portrait shoot but they break down to essentially using just the ambient day light, bouncing extra light on to your model with a reflector, or adding artificial light from something like a flash.
In this video tutorial, portrait photographer Gavin Hoey looks at how to get the best from all three ways of lighting, by trying them all out in one shoot. Gavin finds three locations, each of which should play to the advantages of certain light. He then passes on his top tips for working with daylight, a reflector, or flash.
By then end of the session Gavin has photographed the same model in three locations, each time using three types of light. Which is best is something that only you can decide.

Gavin says "oh I don't know, lets try, 1/8 power", bang nails it on the first try. Very nice photoshoot and showing the various ways to shoot with light.
I rent a studio from a guy like that, no light meter, sets a light, says shoot around f9. I do, and the picture is perfectly exposed. Experience.
In the 1st two examples, my preference leaned toward flash, but in the last example, daylight & reflector won the day. It just goes to show there really is no one way to light a portrait. It's more important to understand all the tools in your arsenal to achieve your desired result. Great video as always, Gavin!
I live in San Francisco where it’s often overcast, gray, and dull. In those situations, a gold reflector has come in handy to add a bit warmth to my subjects.

@@GavinHoey Keep in mind that using the gold reflector in cloudy / shady conditions actually "mixes" in with the natural ambient bluish light and creates a more corrected / pleasing skin tone. In other words you will not get gold light on a face that is in overcast or shady light to begin with. you could also use the gold at sunrise or sunset possibly to enhance the reddish / golden glow that is already flooding the scene.
I use a gold reflector for when the walls are yellowish and I want to make it white. Just reflect the gold on to the subject and neutralize the white balance in post. Saves a lot of time and effort.
Now that's a use case that actually makes sense 👍

Just ordered that "wind proof" reflector--looks like it isn't as harsh as a non-mesh silver, and that is good for some subjects. Some wind pass through will be nice as well. And inexpensive.
i have used the gold reflector for portraites in bright sunlight in a wood love the look it gives the model

I used the gold side of the reflector with an African American girl. The tones were golden and beautiful on her skin. It was my first time using it and I thought it worked rather well. Great video as always Gavin. I love you work and tutorials. Thank you!

I have used the gold for stylized portraits, for sunset aesthetics, for color, with filters in the background.
Great video Gavin, well demonstrated and great photo examples. It also helps having a good model like you did, who knows how to pose.

I just got a color checker passport 2 yesterday, used it and thought to myself why didn't I buy this before?! I actually plan on going back to places, taking a picture of the color checker just to correct some older stuff I've done in the past lol

I use gold a lot. Warms up the shot on pale subjects
I researched before taking pictures of some Nigerian friends. Gold reflectors were advised and the pictures were beautiful on my OMD 1 mark 111. These pictures were taken of them outside on a sunny day with them in the shade.

You can get away with neither but for me both are a "must have" 😉
The gold is for turning the sky blue. Especially near sunset. I add the gold then reduce the yellow in post which blues the sky.
Another good video Gavin, thanks. I tried to track down that interesting Glow wind proof reflector in the UK but no luck. It is very cheap currently from Adorama if I was in the USA but 45$ to ship plus incoming UK taxes is too much :-(

thanks, I like the side by side comparison of the styles. As far as the gold side of the reflector, yes. However, only once was a seriously trying to get a gold color to augment a weak sunset. The other times I was just playing with it to see what it was like in case I ever might need it. So not often, but hey, I bought it, I need to know what it does.

I’ve used golden side of a reflector as I wanted my reflected light to match beautiful warm ambient light. It turned out really well.
In my mind that would make the warm ambient light even warmer but if it works for you, great 🙂

Yep, same place we filmed the recent new Olympus camera / lens video.
Finding suitable locations is tricky at the moment, so we're lucky this one is very accommodating and a few miles down the road 👍

This was a video that was right on time. Ever since the ADseries from Godox blew up, people are just skipping reflectors and eagerly buying another piece of equipment because it’s popular. But if they knew how reflectors and natural lighting worked, it would be much easier to grasp how to properly expose with a strobe.
Guilty! Definitely need to go back to my reflectors in a lot of situations!
Gold reflectors can be quite useful. For example, I once shot some golden brown muffins and added the gold reflector to bring out the colour. I've also photographed jewelry with it too. Can't say I've done a portrait, though I'd be willing to give it a go. Great video as always, Gavin!! :)

Great photo shoot Gavin. I have a question I have tried the off camera flash using my canon 50 D, with the canons 430 ex2 with the transmitter yongno st-E2 this all works fine with correct exposure. Now I use the same setup with my 5DRS the flash fires an the exposure is too dark, I change all the settings and still nothing works. Any suggestions.

I used the gold side of the reflector on a model with darker shin tone.
The reflector you used can apparently be used as a diffuser too. As you're holding it, we can see through it. Interesting, like best of both worlds I guess.
Another enjoyable video Gavin and crew. Gold side of a reflector is something I find works very well with darker skin tones when reflecting light onto a face/body. It can also be used for reflecting from behind a model for kind of a flyaway hair rim light quite effectively.

Gavin, his wife and the model is great. But personally I I wanted to adjust the atmosphere of daylight with a bit of more definition. Do you think it is possible to realize this with a black "deflector" what gives more shadows and definition?

I have used the gold reflector but it's too warm nearly every time. I used it on a redhead with some good results. She was already warm (because of the hair) but her skin was pale white (we live in Minnesota), so the warmth was acceptable.
Did you use the colour checker with the flash? Colour looks different

The ambient and reflector photos were all taken in Aperture Priority mode using evaluative metering mode. The flash photos were taken in manual mode using my eyes as the metering mode 😃

Used a gold reflector on an overcast day with an olive skin colored model
Lovely pictures. But daylight does it for me every time.
Enjoyable video. As far as the images go, I liked the natural light photos best - seemed more pleasing with less shadows on the face.

The gold sometimes works better on darker complexions and suits warmer skin tones. I prefer the white side but it lacks some punch. I think with outdoor strobe photography it has a certain look that often looks too sourcey or lit / artificial and that is not my personal taste. I’d love to see videos with strobes that can mimick natural golden hour light rather than just aiming a softbox or umbrella at a 45 degree angle at the subject.

Great video Gavin! It seems that in this case it works better with natural light. Or maybe the flash was not enough powerful ? The images with flash look dark.

Great Tutorial and comparison! May I ask why you used ISO 200, even though there was sufficient amount of light for ISO 100?
Good question. 200 ISO is the native ISO for my Olympus camera, so there's no quality advantage (for me) at shooting at ISO 100

Love your videos Gavin.. the flash is a very usuful soluction when shooting with trees... it clean easily solve the problem of the greenish shadows that you can find in the skin tone of the model..and it's hard to correct perfectly in postproduction.. Moreover flash solution add texture to the dress of the model that can be useful when shooting dress or cloths. Best Regards
That’s a great argument. Besides this, I consistently liked the flash shots most (yeah, of course also the most difficult to bring along 😊)

i use the gold side of the reflector when shooting someone in a pool idk for some reason i feel like it makes them look sunlit golden without sun in their eyes or spottiness or editing ...i am semi new to this though so maybe this isnt the correct thing to do but i like it

Hi Gavin I follow you from Costa Rica.. Pura vida.. I would like to learn how to meter the exact a mount of light using a light meter with flash and hss to get blurry backgrounds and perfect exposure... Can you help me with another excelent video?
I've made many videos on HSS flash, for example ua-cam.com/video/3tVVIi5B23U/v-deo.html but in order to meter HSS flash you'd need a very special meter (Sekonic L-858D for example) which I don't have 😒
Using a golden reflector can deliver great results on dark skin. BTW, your flash samples have a lower colour temperature (compare the greens in the background). Makes them harder to compare to the available light samples.
Agreed. Gold reflectors can really make a dark complexion look great.
My go-to reflector is a Wescott Sunlight. It's got the brightness of pure silver combined with the warmth of gold. Looks really nice on all kinds of complexions.
I always add 1/4 cto when shooting outside because I find flash colour too white

how do you meter for light on location, with flash?
Resting the reflector on the shoulders instead of holding in front of the face won't tire out your assistant, also it's easier to manipulate while keeping an eye on the reflected light..

the moment you don't have a helping hand, the flash on a trypod wins. then you may look for the right position. (for fill near to camera, for effect from the side f.e.) like the video :-)
you can also use a reflector holder you can mount on a tripod. Haven’t tried this but intend to pick one up for around $40
