Well......if Sotomayer's HJ WR was to be broken, it definitely was that year 2014 when Barshim was in his prime and I don't think there is any doubt he did have the talent to break it back then, but sadly that time has passed now, as he did suffer an injury sometime after 2014 and of course Father Time has occurred so its really unlikely he ever gets that close to challenging the WR ever again......the really sad thing is, we will have to wait another 20 to 30 years before someone else comes along to challenge the Sotomayer WR again......
I was in the stands in New York in 2014 when Barshim and Bondarenko both jumped 2.42m in the same competition and BOTH of them were having attempts at 2.46m. The crowd was going crazy because they recognized that they were seeing something very rare. Barshim had the best attempt at it and while it was close, he just wasn't getting quite enough height to clear it. I don't know when we will ever see 2.46m. It is almost like 2.45m is approaching the human limit. Yes, there is a human limit. How do I know that? Nobody will ever high jump 4.00m or 5.00 m unless they can fly, so we know there is a limit. We are clearly approaching it.
@@peters6119 wow.....that would have been cool to see and partake in! As far as the human limits, I tend to agree however, something you aren't factoring in though in this regards is that I can see the shoe companies making jumping shoes that slightly aid in their performance similar to what is going on in the distance running genre these days with runners closing in on breaking 2 hrs for a marathon and other incredible times that are being run lately.....the other component to this human limits theory is that there could very well come along a genetic freak similar to Usain Bolt in the sprints or Crouser in the shot putt, in which they simply are physically superior to any and all prior high jumpers be it that they are 6' 10" tall yet weigh only 150 pounds but have some kind of advantage in their muscular skeletal make up........the other potential to the human limit theory is the better training and understanding how the human body works and develops.....these are things that can still evolve that will make a difference......I agree, NO one will be high jumping 4 or 5 meters......but just like the 7 foot barrier I could see a very slow progression over the 8 ft barrier once a few athletes start doing it......I do believe some of the high jump WR longevity is due more to a mental block than a physical one......I think both those guys could have jumped 2.46 had they not had some many jumps already during the competition.........
Sotomayor retired after two positive steroid tests in 2001 - it's pretty likely he was on something else undetectable during the height of his career too.
I think a lot of people ignore that, even on Barshim’s highest jump, his calves and heels would’ve knocked the bar down had it been at the world record height.
To set a record that will never be touched, it is almost imperative that unrelated circumstances make the record unbreakable. There are a couple of baseball records that meet these criteria. One example would be the season record for "complete games" by a pitcher. Track records will be broken due in part to better training regimes, but primarily due to technology and ever-improving equipment.
Gee!! I never actually saw Sotomayer jump before. Dang he could get up there. Also I never knew Barshim attempted 2.46m/8 feet 0.75 or 1 inch. He cleared it, but couldnt get his calves/heels over. That was in 2014?
You forgot Wilt Chamberlain who actually competed in the high jump before the Fosbery flop. "avid track and field athlete, he high jumped 6 feet, 6 inches, ran the 440 yards in 49.0 seconds and the 880 yards in 1:58.3, put the shot 53 feet, 4 inches, and long jumped 22 feet. Chamberlain was the star player for the Overbrook Hilltoppers basketball team, wearing jersey number five."
The backward dive high jump pelvic lift occurs earlier and more pronounced manner because of spinal mobility as the jumper clears the crossbar axis. I cannot speak about the all important approach mechanics because of space limitations.
Cool video, but putting NBA players (even MJ) in conversation with these guys does a disservice to elite T&F high jumpers. MJ is maybe the greatest basketball player of all time, but lets not pretend his high jumping skills were anything on the level of elite T&F high jumpers.
The thing not taken into account in that 2.43m is the positioning of his feet. He would not have cleared bigger heights. A missing comment is how those with the athletic ability (like in long jump or triple jump) are weeded out by other sports that draw on that athletic skill and pay much more, like basketball, handball or volleyball. That's why Sotomayor' s record might be unbeaten.
Neither do I, I also don't get 50" being the standard. That is absolutely no standard. The world record for the running vert is 50". So no idea what he's talking about and for what sport. A standing 35" vert is high.
7:20 I'm pretty sure Stefan Holm did 2.40m too, and if I'm remembering it correctly I think he has the record for highest jump relative to his height with like 60 cm over his height or something crazy like that
Sotomayor is indeed the world record holder at 2.45m but many do not consider him to be the greatest high jumper of all time. Sotomayor is 1.93 tall but Stefan Holm of Sweden is only a modest 1.81 tall but boasts an incredible personal record of 2.40m. This is an astounding 59cm above his own head whereas Sotomayor's world record is a more modest 52cms above his own head. In fact, throughout his career, Holm jumped higher above his own head on several occasions than Sotomaypor ever did even once. Holm, like Sotomayor, won Olympic gold and four indoor world titles.
I remember seeing Javier Sotomayor break that record, and his jumping was insane. I also remember watching Flojo on TV. Can you imagine what Bob Ballard could of done if he didn't go out for beer and tequila the night before? Anyone who's OR/WR has stood for more than 10 years, should just be called "the great", and anyone afterwards shouldn't be acknowledged unless their new record stands for at least 10 years. They have to earn it through time. 😊
When I was a kid playing basketball, I would challenge myself with jumping. Can I touch the ceiling with my head? With my elbow? I managed those two but bringing my butt that high? Oh, boy...
For me, the spud webb dunk will always be the greatest of the jumping feats ! as for the "vertical jump test" it is completely irrelevant to the HJ event, which requires a running take off of one foot.
The other thing not really mentioned here that separates straight verticals from high jump is that you have to jump off of one leg. The amount of force that has to go through the tendons and muscles on that one leg to jump 8+ feet is absurd.
2:53 - Your thumbnail sucks! Why does it say 50 inches when he jumped 96.457 inches?? As soon as I looked at the thumbnail I said to myself "that can't be right, every high jumper can jump more than 50 inches". In fact, if the comparison is to a basketball rim, it still doesn't make sense as the rim is 10 feet or 120 inches. Making the jump just 23.5 inches below a basketball rim, no where near close to 50 inches.
I'm confused af as well. He also said 50" is the standard for jumping, when it isn't lmao. The running vert world record is 50". No idea what this dude is saying
The back arc was there, but the butt couldn't clear. a bit more power on the jump so there's less need to force anything over. I'd bet he could clear 2,5 meter barb wire fence and land on his feet with ease. Just the competition situation got the best of him. Instead if simply leaping over it like he had most likely already done dozens of times back home, he "went for the World Record!" and that didn't happen, obviously.
I've seen a video of a jumper clearing a bar of something like 2m35 with a huge margin, but I can't find the video again. Does rhis remind someone of something ?
Barshim’s 243 jump wasn’t higher than Sotomayor’s WR, it’s an illusion created by Barhim’s very flexible spine, but his lower hip/upper thigh never went much higher than 243 at any point of this jump, this was about a 243 jump, like his attempt at 246, his lower hip/upper thigh was what knocked the bar down.
Donald Bradman . Statistically the greatest sportsman ever ( there might be an Australian woman who is even better) . Bradman's batting average is 35% better than anyone who has played cricket in the last 146 years. Discussion closed.
It doesn't matter if someone had a 6-foot vertical jump off two feet, they couldn't high jump. High jump rules specify you must jump off one foot only.
There must be some maximum vertical any human could achieve on Earth. Since F = ma, a = F / m. And since m is constant for any jumper then F must increase as a increases, and you’d want to maximize a to achieve the greatest height. But the human body can only withstand some threshold of force before, say tearing a tendon. I’m sure somebody’s probably worked this out before. (Of course when jumping, at least on the way up, a isn’t constant but would be the maximum when first leaving the ground and would be 0 when reaching the peak. When coming back down a would simply be equal to g. I think this is right.)
His 2.44m jump was incorrectly described in the video as 8 feet. 0 inches. It is not. 2.44m is only 7 ft. 10.512 inches. His 2.45m jump in 1993, the current WR, is the only jump ever over 8 feet. (8 feet. 0.48 inches).
Sir Donald Bradmans test batting average. Doubt very much that will ever be beaten. I know its not athletics but still it is a record that is worth looking at.
@@sir_sack It still makes no sense relative to a basket ball rim which is at 120 inches. So the jump is just 23.5 inches below a basketball rim, no where near close to 50 inches.
Great stuff, enjoy your videos. One small quibble. Lebron does not belong in this video. His "record" is about longevity and rule changes which neuter defenses in the modern NBA As your graphic shows, Jordan's average per game scoring is superior based on the total games played.

They have to earn it through time. 😊
I love running
When I was a kid playing basketball, I would challenge myself with jumping. Can I touch the ceiling with my head? With my elbow? I managed those two but bringing my butt that high? Oh, boy...
For me, the spud webb dunk will always be the greatest of the jumping feats ! as for the "vertical jump test" it is completely irrelevant to the HJ event, which requires a running take off of one foot.
I read that Dwight Stones had a very low vertical jump. I don't remember exactly but it seems like it may have been around 23 inches.
The other thing not really mentioned here that separates straight verticals from high jump is that you have to jump off of one leg. The amount of force that has to go through the tendons and muscles on that one leg to jump 8+ feet is absurd.
High jumping is so alien bro
I jumped high. I jumped over a whole person.
Sotomayor and Barshim are men who can fly like birds
All very interesting but who could forget the beauty of the rivalry between Ulrike Meyfarth and Sara Simeoni?
It's more impressive since there's way more science to making you jump higher this day and age...
GOAT jump
Good luck trying to break Mr.Sotomayer's world record !
@7:27 Stefan Holm also did 2.40m
I've seen a video of a jumper clearing a bar of something like 2m35 with a huge margin, but I can't find the video again. Does rhis remind someone of something ?
That was Artur Partyka :)
You forgot to add stefen holm... he also cleared 2.40m
For basketball...what are the point/minutes look like. Who is the most efficient ?
Jordan is roughly 10% better than James if you calculate pts/min played. Alone at the top in that category. Just like James is for total points.
Good idea to show Basketball hoop for comparison.
But BBall hoop is 46cm off the floor so your graphic needs adjusting!
And I’m not kidding😳
Barshim’s 243 jump wasn’t higher than Sotomayor’s WR, it’s an illusion created by Barhim’s very flexible spine, but his lower hip/upper thigh never went much higher than 243 at any point of this jump, this was about a 243 jump, like his attempt at 246, his lower hip/upper thigh was what knocked the bar down.
Donald Bradman . Statistically the greatest sportsman ever ( there might be an Australian woman who is even better) . Bradman's batting average is 35% better than anyone who has played cricket in the last 146 years. Discussion closed.
8:44 anyone see how the bar sags in the middle? Looks like a 2cm sag to me when you compare the bar at its attach point
I'm pretty sure they measure the middle of the bar, so any sag would be to the jumper's disadvantage, if they were off center.
Barshim 2.41 ireland, barshim 2.42 New york, Artur Partyka 2.37
It doesn't matter if someone had a 6-foot vertical jump off two feet, they couldn't high jump. High jump rules specify you must jump off one foot only.
Javier Sotomayor = El Caballo - The Horse
Faux "El Caballo" c'est Juantorena
An American baseball player did something that the ‘rest of the World’ did not beat. Well, that is a surprise!
Standing High Jump
5'2" ~5'8"
Training'76
Risk of Rain soundtrack!? Right?
I remember Bob Beamon and Mike Conley in the Long Jump. Has anyone come close to 29 feet?
Mike Powell set the existing world record of 29 ft 4 1⁄4 in. in 1991.
7:24 Stefam Holm also jumped 2.40 m and you didn't put his name on the list
he also ignored Ivan Ukhov who cleared 2.42 despite Sotomayor also being on the doping list
7:26 where is Stefan holm
His 2.44m jump was incorrectly described in the video as 8 feet. 0 inches. It is not. 2.44m is only 7 ft. 10.512 inches. His 2.45m jump in 1993, the current WR, is the only jump ever over 8 feet. (8 feet. 0.48 inches).
2.44 meters is 8 ft. 0.06 inches. 2.40 meters is 7 ft. 10.512 inches.
Sir Donald Bradmans test batting average. Doubt very much that will ever be beaten. I know its not athletics but still it is a record that is worth looking at.
I had the flexibility and timing over the bar to match these greats...however, I severely lacked the vertical leaping ability, lol
How about Bradman record in test cricket 99.94 average?
Sotomayor is the GOAT
Simply put, If you don't clear the bar, you didn't make the jump. The highest jump in history is 2.45 and it's not up for debate.
Agreed.
I don't understand that thumbnail
it shows how high it is compared to a basketball net, something which most people can picture the height of
@@sir_sack Ohhh
@@sir_sack It still makes no sense relative to a basket ball rim which is at 120 inches. So the jump is just 23.5 inches below a basketball rim, no where near close to 50 inches.
When told he'd jumped 8 feet he just shrugged. It meant nothing to him.
Javier Sotomeyer 8ft!!!!
Recycled old video? Didn't you post this before?
What in the.....
Great stuff, enjoy your videos. One small quibble. Lebron does not belong in this video. His "record" is about longevity and rule changes which neuter defenses in the modern NBA As your graphic shows, Jordan's average per game scoring is superior based on the total games played.
