    Monopod bonus: sometimes a display area (museum, etc.) will allow you to use a monopod when they won't allow the more disruptive tripod.

    Really useful, thanks Brian. I normally need a stick when walking any distance, which can be a nuisance with a tripod. The monopod could both aid my stability and the camera's.
    I'll definitely give It a try.

    Nice video. What I've found is that my monopod attached to the camera lifted off the ground a few inches acts to slow down minute vibrations from shaky hands. This sometimes works better for me than having it on the ground. It's best when extended and I guess can be best described as having a dampening effect.

    I recently got a monopod, and at first, I wasn't sure if I made the right choice. That extra leg that goes down to the ground didn't seem to make much of a difference. But then I watched your video and added a ball head on top of it, and wow, what a game-changer! Now, I don't have to keep adjusting the length of the monopod every time I take a shot. I just tilt it a bit more if I want to shoot lower.(I usually place the monopod in front of me and use it together with my legs to form a triangle shape.) Plus, I can change the shooting angle without messing with the monopod's position. Thanks for the tip-it's really made a difference!

    Thanks Brian! I love a monopod. Tripods have their uses but can be quite a faff to lug around. My cheap monopod setup extends to knee height, which is all i need, and fits in my rucksack. I like to travel super light. Top tip for anyone with a broken gorilla pod: The ball head can be unscrewed and actually makes a great ball head for your monopod. It supports my G9 no problems.

    Spot on advice, I have used a monopod for a few years now and find it much easier than a tripod. At 71 it also doubles as a walking stick. The mini ball head is also a great idea.

      I also use a monopod as a walking stick, especially when walking on uneven ground. I have now just purchased a swivel ball head adapter. I am now 72 years young. Lol.

    I have also used a monopod for years, a three section Manfrotto 679B with integrated tilting head, which I originally bought for my E-1. It's a bit heavy though, which of course makes it sturdy, and it's also rather tall when collapsed. So after seeing your inspiring video, I will now get myself a light and short one when colllapsed (for my E-M1 II and E-M10 II). You are so right -- a monopod is an indespensable tool, and not only for long lenses. I tend to use mine also as walking stick when needed (I'm 76). Greetings from Sweden!

    I own several monopods as they're so lightweight and useful. An head-ball with quick-release plate can be very practical too. Bigger models for higher reach or little optional tripod attach allow us a lot of use for video, external flash support or self-photography too...
    Great video guy! Always a pleasure to see you 😉

    Great video Brian! I have a monopod/mini tripod from 2005 I still use today. I acts well as a monopod and with its tripod legs I can lean it against a fence or table for stability. I keep it my car so I'll always have it handy. All the best!

    Great video on the handling and advantages of a much underreported tool - thank you! I use mine with a tilting head (Manfrotto 234) because back then, I slapped heavy DSLRs + lenses onto it and I did not trust a flimsy mini ball head and did not want to lug along a heavy duty ball head. Also, I used the "selfie stick technique" in conjunction with self-timer and a "guessing act as to pointing the lens" to raise my shooting perspective. (It's a balancing act, so I'd rather not do this in a crowd.) Today, of course, one may use the app on the smartphone to control the camera for that.

    Yes, I have a hybrid tripod/monopod combination. Saves me carrying two! Also have a monopod with a miniature stand. It can be removed and replaced by a spike or rubber end, doubling up as a hiking stick.

    I've used a monopod for years. I'm 60 years old, and I can use all the help I can get. I also like to shoot with my old film camera every once in a while, that has no image stabilization at all.

    I've got the ball head but not the monopod! Iwas thinking of getting a monopod only a week ago. Now I know I need one. Often a tripod gets restrictive. I was doing some group shots and I ended up picking up the tripod with the camera on it and using it like a monopod!🤣🙄

    I'm looking for a monopod for my 150-450 wildlife lens I bought Swiss plate to adjust the lens for balance and put my heavy duty ball head on my monopod I want to try the ball head first before I buy a gimble head since I already own the ball head. Nobody ever mentioned you need to balance the lens on the ball head with a heavy long lens before you use the lens or you need to buy a swiss plate to adjust the balance on the lens

    Great video as usual. Personally, I use a monopod a LOT, especially for video. I think they're highly underrated, and can be bought for not much money. In my experience, a reasonably priced monopod is generally more stable than a cheap tripod!

    Thanks for this video. It reminded me that I already have a monopod that may be just the ticket for using my Oly 75-300mm lens. Since vertical shake should be controlled by the monopod, I assume it would be best to set the IS to IS 3.

      I’ve been looking at a lot of detailed reviews on IBIS systems and across the board when tested (as opposed to pure speculation) the is no noticeable difference by having a camera on a tripod/monopod with or without its IBIS enabled. I’d be tempted just to leave it on full. Let me know how you get on

    My tripod has one leg I've used it sparingly ojust grab the hole tripod may have to reconsider
    Add a nd filter with a slow Sutter speed with a f1.2--f4

  • @stevebonn3463
    @stevebonn3463 3 роки тому +1

    Mostly, the Olympus IBIS works well enough for me. However, I encountered one scenario where it definitely didn't help. I was trying out Pro Capture mode on a bird that was sitting on a fence, an waiting with the shutter halfway down for it to take off. Well, the bird was taking its time and my arm was getting more-and-more tired. Finally, after maybe 4 minutes, I put the camera down to take a break and the bird flew away! For this type of scenario, a monopod would be great, especially with a ball-head like you used in your video.
    I wonder if the monopod gives enough stability for non-handheld hi-res mode to work. Probably a tripod would be better for that, but maybe a monopod, combined with sitting down, would do the trick.

    Another great video Brian. I am also looking to get a swivel ball head for my monopod. It will need to either support my G9 plus lenses up to 45-200mm. Or my Sony RX10 mk4 Bridge Camera. I'm 70 + so stability is also getting a problem for me. Is there a link to your swivel ball head ?. Many thanks matey. UPDATE. I have now bought a swivel ball head adapter .

    Great tips. Would the use of a monopod have an impact on the type of Ibis in Olympus camera’s? E.g. in the Oly em5ii there is vertical, horizontal, automatic and all directions ibis. Which one to choose ?

      I've never had issues and there are a few videos on YT saying similar. Its not as solid as a tripod so from my experience I'd say leave the IS on and just use it

    is it possible to use a monopod for high rasolution captures or isn't there chance even if one would give it a clouple of tries? I mean the regular one, not the hand held feature, some cameras have.

    • @ThatMicro43Guy
      @ThatMicro43Guy  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, its perfectly possible to do but it depends on how still you can keep it. Bracing against a wall or similar will give you the best chance

    Brian, like you I am a monopod advocate, but I think your vision is a little limited. A monopod is not just a vertical stick that holds up the camera. For example, when you talked about using the wall, it would have been much better to move close to the wall and brace the monopod against it. You can to the same thing with trees and fence posts. I carry an elastic "bungee" cord that I can use to lash my monopod to things, making a perfectly stable platform. Of course, using available objects to brace the monopod almost always leaves it at an awkward angle. Instead of a tiny junk ball head, I suggest you try something like my Acratech GPS. I have been on five photo safaris, and the monopod/ball head combination also works extremely well in game drive vehicles where I can use my legs and the structure of the vehicle for bracing, often with the monopod a long ways from vertical.
    You can also find videos where the photographer makes a tripod using his two legs and the monopod, or where he puts the monopod top near one of his feet (standing), resulting in a sort of inverted tripod. Or shorten the monopod and tuck its end into your belt, again creating a tripod.
    Oh, and sans camera, they are very helpful as trekking poles. In fact, Gitzo had a line of "Monotrek" combination poles now extinct. Apparently they didn't sell well. They did look a little flimsy to me, but the concept was sound.
    Speaking of Gitzo, you mentioned that your Manfrotto was a little wobbly at full extension. Rule #1 on this is the same as Rule #2 and Rule #3: Do not buy junk tools. A hundred US bucks will buy a used Gitzo aluminum monopod on eBay. I favor the 5- or 6-section ones for compact storage. Carbon is unnecessary and sometimes weighs more than a similar aluminum pole. There are too many metal fittings for the little bit of carbon weight saving to matter.
    A bit of a sermon, I guess. Sorry.

    • @ThatMicro43Guy
      @ThatMicro43Guy  3 роки тому +1

      Not a problem.
      Yes my vision, in this video, is a little limited. That is unfortunately the nature of UA-cam. Everything you said is correct but putting it into a video format and showing examples of each makes the video much too long time wise, plus I’m aiming it as a wide cross section of viewers some of whom are, like yourself, well experienced and well versed in the subject while others possibly have no idea monopoles even exist. People’s attention spans tend to be very short.
      As for bracing on fences etc, again you are correct and I did a video a few weeks ago on using the older techniques which this certainly firs the bill, but this video was around the monopod specifically.
      Finally, you are correct about the quality aspect, but again I would guess that many of the viewers are unable/unwilling to spend money on an accessory they have not experimented with before. If everyone only bought the best quality then I wouldn’t have needed to point out about the instability of the thinner legs, but I know many people don’t buy expensive and then get frustrated at the little issues.
      Does that make sense?
      Certainly not taken as a sermon though. Very constructive. I thank you. By the video AND our comments it helps pass more experience on to others which is the real point. Best wishes.
