    One of my favorite lenses for a tiny setup. Its tiny size makes it looks unintimidating but it has a decent reach of a short telephoto lens. Very suitable for street photography stealthy snap "the shy object" that you don't want to get too close. its close-up focus range also makes it quite versatile as well. I think it fits rather well with my GX85 as it kinda looks awkward on a bigger body. There's not much love for this lens making it very affordable in the used market.

    I had this lovely, tiny Zuiko lens for a couple of years before trading it to 'upgrade' to the Lumix equivalent, thinking it might be 'better' as it cost more. Well, there is absolutely no difference in image quality, and for some inexplicable reason, I preferred using the Zuiko, even though it's almost the same size as the Lumix 42.5mm. So particularly if bought second-hand, this Zuiko is an absolute must have (bargain) lens.

    I own and use the 45mm f/1.8 Olympus. It was the third lens I purchased for my micro 4/3 because based on my shooting style, I rely more on normal and wide lenses than telephoto lenses. I use the 45 for still-life, products, half-length portraits, head & shoulder portraits, face portraits, reportage, and street.
    The 20mm f/1.7 Panasonic normal lens was the first lens I purchased and the 14mm f/2.5 Panasonic wide-angle lens was the second.
    The fourth lens I purchased was the 14-45mm f/3.5 - f/5.6 zoom which I used as a backup to my three prime lenses.
    The fifth lens I purchased was a Panasonic 45-200mm f/4 - f/5.6 to use when I needed something longer than 45mm in focal length.
    The last lens I purchased was a refurbished 17mm f/2.8 because it cost me only $75 and I could use it as a backup for the 45/20/14 three-lens combo that I normally used.

    This was, indeed, my third MFT lens back in ... well. It's a keeper. An idea re: lens hood for this one, perhaps. I like to use those collapsible rubber lens hoods. Affordable, collapsible (as the name says), and, by way of its rubber, it's a good protection in case you knock the lens. The collar may break after a number of years of heavy use, but, hey.

    My first m4/3 prime lens - I came from original 4/3 where I had their 50mm f/2.0, which also was really good.
    Your last picture with the horse's eye has a bit of "noise" - do you know DxO noise reduction programs - I myself have just 'invested' in the program DxO PureRaw, and it completely removes one of the disadvantages of 4/3 compared to the 35mm cameras - higher noise level. It is really amazingly easy to use, efficient and quality.
    I have the Om-d e-m1.1 and yes, it is soon 8 years old, which is seen especially in the noise level, but with DxO's help, it manages for a while yet.

    Lovely video. I love this lens, though I px'd it for the 'leicasonic' 45mm macro. One of the featured structures was Lambley Viaduct, and I recorded an interview with the then mayor on the top of it. Small world 🙂📷

  • @xmeda
    @xmeda 11 місяців тому +1

    You can share the lens hood with 14-42/3.5-5.6 tho.. even the ring is identical.
    And there IS NO FOCAL LENGTH RECALCULATION (crop factor) for stabilization. It simply is 45mm lens no matter what system and what sensor is behind. You are always stabilising 45mm.. and similar for those old rules that if you are shooting with such lens, you should have about 1/50s shutter to prevent shake. But that applies for film era resolution. With increasing resolution, you will need shorter shutter. In reality I can do nice pics with this lens using 1/15s thanks to IBIS. If IBIS is off, then it is shaky up to about 1/30s depending on hands. Of course 1/100s is very safe for such lens.
    DOF behaves similar to FF 45mm F1.8 lens. It is just cropped, so if you are using some small subject in the middle, what else you expect than shallow DOF? :D The DOF changes with distance only, so unless you try to compare identical framing that will require 2x the distance for MFT, it simply behaves like any other 45mm lens.
    And yes 50mm lenses are "sharp" or rather have good resolution and contrast, because those are well known designs for decades. This one is not much different...

      Good compact pancake lens but not quite as sharp as the Oly 45mm. The Pan GX PZ14-42 is another good compact pancake lens but again not quite as sharp as the Oly 45mm. On my E-PL7 they really do slip into a jacket pocket.

      Lumix 20mm f1.7 ... my go-to if I want to do single-lens street photography with my Pen E-P5. Slow, hunting AF, but a smooth package. (Was my second MFT lens.)

    • @jeffslade1892
      @jeffslade1892 3 роки тому +1

      @@kiwikea2002 yeah the E-P5 got some of the stuff from the first E-M5 whereas the E-PL7 only a year later got a lot of goodies from the upcoming E-M10, including more focus points, it does not hunt, but lacks the second wheel of fiddling atop, and only 3-axis stabilisation from the E-M10.1 but to be honest you don't put a massive lens on a tiny camera. The focussing and hunting is done by the camera. The focussing speed of the G9 is almost unbelievable but there is a drawback to having too many focus points, the focus points are close together and it cannot find contrast at dusk. Neither the GH4 not the G7 have this problem.
      My E-M5ii is not quite as small as the E-PL7 (the E-PL8 is just a cosmetic update), and has better haptics (feel) than the Lumix G7 although that is just as capable if not more-so albeit without body stabilisation. The G7 is popular with Vloggers and can currently be picked up used very cheaply. I've never bought a camera because it is the latest thing but because it can do something the other cannot; I got the G7 to B-Cam the GH4 because the E-M5ii cannot shoot video for more than 10 minutes. I got the E-M5ii because I wanted decent IBIS. I got the E-PL7 to replace a Lumix GM1 with something I could operate. I got the GH4 to video (promo) rock bands. And a lot of the kit bought used.
      As always the best camera is the one you have in your hand.

    Great vid mate. Would you consider the 56mm F1.4 a better lens? I have the Olympus 45 and have the sigma 56 arriving soon. • @ThatMicro43Guy
      @ThatMicro43Guy  Рік тому +1

      It depends how you look at it. There’s an 11mm difference in focal length so if you are needing a longer lens the immediately it’s better. But that makes it a non comparison. The f1.4 is giving a faster lens with a shallower DOF especially combined with the longer length, but not a huge difference.
      So no, it’s not going to offer you much more but it is going to offer you some noticeable differences so still probably well worth it if it fits to your main style of shooting. They are both excellent lenses.

    I've had the 45mm for years. Like many fast primes it is not at its best wide open. Depending on program we may have a minimum shutter speed but we don't get a minimum (low number) aperture, which is a pain. With MFT I've found the minimum unstabilised shutter to be one upon focal-length, not double it for FF equivalent i.e. 1/45s. Focal length is focal length. With IBIS one can go slower if need be. On MFT 45mm is a telephoto.

    I’m working through your videos slowly Brian, but this one has annoyed me now! Why? Because I’ve sat back and thought the two zoom lenses I have are all good, but having come from phone photography and being used to a simple 28mm lens, I’m wondering why I don’t just get myself three primes that will give me the faster focus etc!
    With me concentrating on abstract, architecture mostly ( and maybe street if I can pluck up the courage) do you think this would benefit me more? There is the added bonus with a much better quality image over a phone especially if the iso is increased, that a small crop is easily done which can give a few mm cushion.

    • @ThatMicro43Guy
      @ThatMicro43Guy  Рік тому +1

      I’ll start my answer by expressing a bias toward prime lenses.
      I enjoy taking abstract architecture too and I love using the 45mm for this. The big advantages of using good primes are generally better image quality, fas perturbed which really help when shooting inside dark buildings such as churches and castles, they are light, small and discrete.
      The problem is you can get an excellent lens such as the Olympus 12-40 f2.8 which covers most of what you’d need and is still pretty past.
      But I would (and have) bought a collection of good primes all around the f1.7-1.8 aperture. Yes, you can buy faster (f1.2-1.4] but you pay a big penalty for that extra stop of light in a lot more expensive, heavier and bigger.
      My choice 12mm, 17mm, 25mm & 45mm

    • @Ricalex67
      @Ricalex67 Рік тому +1

      @@ThatMicro43Guy well, I’m probably going with the 25 and 45 as they are more in line with what I work at. Later on I’d probably add the 17mm.

      I have just found someone selling a Panasonic Lumix G Vario 35-100mm f/4-5.6 ASPH Mega O.I.S lens, they want £120 and it’s as new. This is significantly smaller size wise than my 40-150 and am wondering if it’s worth purchasing. I know this doesn’t add to focal length but I’m suspecting the smaller form factor will give me a psychological advantage when shooting out in public. Just wanted to know what you think. Thank you.
      Ps - this isn’t instead of the 25 and 45mm primes I intend getting.

    • @ThatMicro43Guy

      Generalisation - Olympus come from fashion photography where ever so slightly soft is wanted (good for weddings and don't forget to video the fight scene) whereas Leica come from reportage where razor sharp is wanted. Depth of field is not just aperture and focal length, it can be designed into a lens; Leica tend to have a slightly deeper DoF. Lumix lenses are drawn from the Leica stable.
