Beast machines is underrated, they tried to explore some pretty deep philosophical concepts like the nature of free will, the dangers of extremism, and survivors guilt. It probably shouldn't have been on Saturday mornings. It really would have found a more receptive audience on a later afternoon or evening block like Toonami.

I agree. I'm admittedly not that fond of the first season, but I love the second. I actually didn't even know there was a sequel until the day I tuned into episode 16 Prometheus Unbound and looking back I came in at the right time. That and the remaining 10 episodes l thought were not far off from Beast Wars.

There are so many missteps to Beast Machines. The character designs were not only strange, but didn't even match the toys. Character arcs and plots never really got developed or explained like in Beast Wars (which the writers were instructed to ignore), and as a result, the series lack the very depth that Hasbro wanted in the series. I don't hate Beast Machines, but it wasn't the sequel Beast Wars deserved.

Especially seeing as how Beast Machines was a continuation of the story of Beast Wars, heck, Beast Machines started the same day Beast Wars ended, ignoring Beast Wars was definitely a mistake.

I was surprised that you didn't mention the fact that Megatron, chained to the back of the Ark somehow has escaped, traveled to Cybertron ahead of everyone else, totally transformed the planet, switched some characters alignment all in time for the Ark's arrival. That bugged me right away. Lacking a ship, mind you.

    • @177SCmaro
      @177SCmaro 3 місяці тому

I don't think it was ever explained, like a lot of the show's problems, but to me, it was mentioned in Beast Wars that transwarp is capable of traveling through space and time, in fact, that being how they arrived on prehistoric Earth. So Megatron breaking free maybe somehow arrived at Cybertron possibly months or even years ahead of the Maximals by fallout out of transwarp randomly? How he fell out of transwarp and survived to make it to Cybertron without a ship is more difficult to explain unless he was dumped out into normal space pretty much in orbit and somehow made his way to the surface.
Some people also take issue with the virus he somehow made and set loose on Cybertron and I thought that maybe it was something to do with the alien knowledge he gained during his time on prehistoric Earth, maybe as a result of his experiments developing transmetal II technology?
I don't know. My main problem is if the audience has to essentially write the show by filling in all this important information and plot points the writers have failed at something. Then again, it's my understanding that Beast Machines a very limited number of episodes which might explain why certain aspects of the show feel really rushed and contrived and can be a bit forgivable.

Well it depends on where you watched it. YTV in Canada didn't want to wait and got the full series in one shot. Fox Kids wanted to have a second season, which was subtitled "Battle For The Spark", which was also reflected in the toys with an added gimmick where pressing the spark crystal activated a special feature.

I think the reason Beast Machines failed ultimately comes down to two problems:
    1) It fundamentally misunderstood the Beast Wars characters. This was a major problem because the characters of Beast Wars were its greatest strength, and to try and continue their story meant staying true to those characters. Instead, it changed Megatron from an ambitious schemer who didn't care how he acquired power to a somewhat honorable bigot against organics, Rattrap into a self-conscious team player, and Optimus Primal into a militant guru.
    2) Its ambition exceeded its grasp. It wanted to tackle deep philosophical issues, but it often fell back on empty platitudes or just didn't explain its reasoning at all. A great example is how it handled transforming in the early episodes. It implied this required some sort of spiritual centering of oneself, but never explained or demonstrated how the characters achieved that. It's frustrating because the show posited many interesting concepts, but rarely articulated them well or explored them as deeply as needed.

I believe the reason why BEAST MACHINES didn't connect with a lot of people is due to these reasons:
1: It embarks on the after-effects of war. Meaning after you go through traumatizing events, killings, etc. It will mold you into becoming something else. Which, in most cases depressed and mad at the world. That happened in the series, and everyone was too severely depressed. You don't showcase these dark elements in a kids' show, especially every episode. The show was too mature for its audience.
2: The organic robot forms. Many BEAST WARS fans like myself didn't like the organic look of the transformers. I understood what the writers were going for. I/e Making the transformations look more HUMANOID, which correlates with the organic spectrum. But at the same time, it felt a bit weird, and at times they were not good to look at. Not just that, because of the organic forms, the transformers have no weapons (i.e., tech/guns, etc.) except for the limited organic powers such as shock, flight, and beam powers.

That's the main reason why I hated them. Especially Ratrap. We had already done the whole thing of him learning how to drive. And than they do it over again, but worse. I get the reason. They had to pull a Samus. Reset her armor. But Samus doesn't suck in base form. She just has less resources. Ratrap can't even store bombs.

The whole show was completely dependent on philosophical duality for every single one of its conflicts that I kept rolling my eyes in almost every episode. The writers tried way too hard to capitalize on the recent popularity of The Matrix at the time.

The changes come down to management messing with the show. Dan DiDio, who was an executive at Mainframe at the time, told show creators Bob Skir and Marty Isenberg, as well as show bible writer Marv Wolfman, to ignore the previous series, including Beast Wars, and to make the show darker. As his run at DC Comics shows that's basically how he works. He hates continuity and prefers darker stories. So any additions from G1 and Beast Wars happened when they ran around that request. I remember Skir took most of the flack at the time because he was the one who took on the role of defending the series.
Also, the technorganic stuff was Hasbro's idea, as they were trying to keep the Transformers line fresh. The only influence they had was Nightscream, a Skir creation. My problem with him was that he is the same at the end of the show as he is at the start of the show and he's not very likable the whole time. I didn't hate the show and it's hardly the worse of the franchise, but it did have a lot of hurdles to overcome and it didn't always do that very well.

Beast Machines tried to take advantage of the recent popularity of The Matrix at the time and borrowed some of its themes, like philosophical questions regarding duality and free will, etc. in order to draw in new fans. Unfortunately this was the show's biggest downfall. As a result, everything was held hostage to those ideas, including the characters. In fact they no longer felt like actual characters, they were just talking heads made to accommodate the show's themes. Everyone turned into mere walking representations of certain metaphysical problems, which got very redundant and uninteresting fast. I really wanted to like Beast Machines but it will forever go down as a missed opportunity. Even if you removed all references to Beast Wars it would still be a disappointing show.

I agree with the Metroid style downgrade being kind of a cheap move. Watching this when it came out it felt like they just erased all the power progression from Beast Wars. And honestly I didn't like the art style of the new forms , it just felt like a downgrade from how cool and different the older art was. Every type of change had a unique look to it, even between transmetal 1 & 2. And the constant trope of the planet being lifeless like some sort of poorly built "open world" game from the early 2000's didn't help either. I'm glad there were some elements that worked well, but even now after rewatching Beast Wars recently, I don't see myself trying this again.

One of the things that bothers me to this day was the unnecessary "bait and switch" they pulled with Silverbolt. The kept showing Thrust had an instinctive tendency to save Blackarachnia that even he didn't understand setting up a rather charming "You loved and protected me even when you couldn't remember me or yourself" and pulled a switcharoo just for a cheap laugh at her expense by revealing that Thrust is actually Waspinator.
It was almost like the writers were like, "Oh, you're getting emotionally invested in these two characters possibly reconnecting despite all the horrible things done to them, well, psych, he was an ugly bug this whole time!"
And there was the sudden and not very well explained transformation of Rynox into basically another Megatron with virtually the same goals, a plot point they abruptly cut off with no climax.

They were actually a series of short episodes that aired after other Cartoon Network shows, and were done by the creator of Samurai Jack (even down to the artstyle). Perhaps the best thing about them is how they handled General Grevious, allowing his bounty hunter personality to shine through and turning him into an actual credible threat.

And the two fights that come to mind are Mace Windu and the Jedi with the dreadlocks. And General Grievous has never looked as good as he did in there. From his introductions and how he used fear and intimidation tactics to take down Jedi. And the way they tied it into the 3rd film at the end to show how Grevious got weaker was just perfect. That's definitely the best adaption of the Clone Wars that I've seen and yet they decided to make it not canon. Instead we got the 08 version. 😒

I also wondered if it wasn't a little deeper than that for Megatron. He's a megalomaniac, obviously, and so needed something to blame for his failures in the Beast Wars. While on Earth he frequently blamed his minions but after, with no one left but himself he turned to blaming his organic, animal part, the beast-flesh that contaminated his otherwise "perfect" self, and externalized this blame by trying to purge all organics from Cybertron, especially the Maximals. However, what Megatron never realized, much less could accept, was that the "beast" was himself, he IS a monster, it never had anything to do with his body having or not having organic parts.
He would twist other transformers very sparks, enslave, and even destroy an entire world just to feed his own deluded god-complex. At least, that's how I interpreted it.

It is weird. I wondered if it might be a consequence or malfunction caused by his many failed attempts to purge organics from his body? Afterall, in Beast Wars there were situations were transformers ability to transform was manipulated. For example, when Tarantulas created a device that forced the maximals and Dinobot to transform into their beast mode and be locked in it.
Another weird thing with Megatron was that they made it a point to obscure his body every time he transformed back into robot mode and I could never figure out why the creators of the show did that especially when he was fully shown in robot mode in flashbacks.

I just finished watching the show, and I’ll admit: it is overhated a bit. Season 1 was personally my favorite, it felt more in-line with Beast wars, but overall I have many gripes with the show, the 2 main ones being:
    1. Inconsistencies: either in story or characterization, this happened a lot. Especially in Season 2, I found myself asking “Wait, who do you guys know that?” or “Why are you acting like this if you had character progression?” Things were too inconsistent, and the new characterizations for old characters felt out of nowhere(mostly).
    2. Designs: some like Primal, Botanica or Nightscream’s beast mode are ok or great, but to me most of the Maximals didn’t look techno-organic, just very weird animals. I wish they had more metal-looking parts in both forms, plus some design changes to their robot mode(especially Silverbolt). Vehicons were great in design.

Off topic but I know that you're a fan of Gundam and Ultraman. I've been thinking of starting to watch both series. It's just I don't where to start. Which Ultraman series is great for beginners like me? And which Gundam series should I start with first?

    • @omnimonramone8459
      @omnimonramone8459 3 роки тому +1

The original Ultraman is a good start if you like classic Tokusatsu. Ultraseven is a good one if you want a slightly more adult series.
Tiga and Cosmos are also decent starting points.

    • @spencermanning9994
      @spencermanning9994 3 роки тому

For Ultraman, I would start with the first one. I think it can be found online. If you don't care about what happened before, I would also recommend Tiga, Mebius, Ginga, Geed, Z, and any of the Zero movies.
Gundam is a wee bit harder since its continuity is much more vast. If you want to start simple, watch the the first Gundam anime. If you're looking for something a bit different, try G Gundam or Gundam SEED. G Gundam in particular was my introduction to the series, and while it's not the most well-liked entry in the franchise, I personally really liked it. Plus, I'm a sucker for battle royale-esque anime.
I'd also suggest taking a look at Kamen Rider and Super Sentai if you're interested.

Great job! As a die hard Beast Wars fan, all I can say is that I do not accept Beast Machines as canon. They should continue Beast Wars on Earth. Beast Wars does not work exclusively away from Earth. I would be happy if they soft rebooted with the team going back to Cybertron with Megatron as their prisoner and being forced to travel back and undo something Megatron did or concerns the Vok. Back to the Future Part II this sucker, revisit the old series updated and add a new twist for new viewers. Base it on nostalgia. Give the viewers what we want, to feel that feeling again.

My idia of after beast wars is Megatron did not escape the shuttle and he was turned over to cybertron oficials when they arived on cybetron. He escapes prison and leads a new armey for congquest leading the maximals to fight back. I imagine the beast maximals would keep thier transmetal forms. Rinox being the oneley one who did not become transmetal would likeley upgrade himselfe and maby Silverbolf but I imagine the beast and machine maximals would join against Megatron. Megatron did create the raptor drones on earth so he could easily create new drones to boost his army while recruting predicons.

just letting you know beast machines was never intended to be a sequel. it was meant to be it's own self contained story, within it's own setting. but hasbro forced mainframe to change it to a continuation of beast wars at the last second. what i'm trying to get at here, is that it's really unfair to criticize it as a sequel. when the writers did not even intend or want it to be a sequel

    What didn't go wrong?
. The Maximals hideous techno-organic bodies
    . How the Maximals transformed
. The plot not making sense to after he beast wars
. Noble the completely organic transformer
. Fighting between the organic and the technological
. How the hell Waspinator got back to Cybertron
. The series being so much more serious and darker than beast wars
When the Maximals got back to Cybertron they ran instead of fighting Megatron's Vehicons. His transformation virus gas only deactivated Silverbolt and Rhinox but since Optimus Primal, Cheetor, Blackarachnia, and Rattrap had transmetal bodies instead of being deactivated they devolved back into their first beast modes which they were stuck in. If they wanted to survive they had to let the Oracle reformat them but it turned them into techno organics. With how hideous they became if I was one of them I would've picked permanent deactivation

What DIDN'T go wrong? Higher ups mettled with the story and script and made ridiculous demands. Even the writer stated nothing made sense. HE hated nightscream. (So did the audience) The CGI? Was a downgrade. When I saw Beast Machines I thought it was a poor quality Knock off. Honestly? Hasbro mettled and totally ruined what they had. A more interesting concept would have been exploring the Transmetal Animal's on Cybertron, seeing the wave as this upcoming thing and a battle to prepare or get the planet out of the wave.
Hell they could have had the ship caught by the Transwarp wave or whatever on route and it causing a crash land on another cybertronian world. Then it would be them trying to help an outpost already in their own conflict and the reaction with it. Allows expanded characters... Lots of potential. What we got was... Something so bad it looked like a mockery.
And plant transformers? That was up there un peak fucking stupidity.

I'd have to rewatch the series again but the main character doesn't always have to be the focus of the show. Sometimes using the character sparingly only makes the character that much better. I look back at DBZ and how for the most part characters like Gohan, Krillin, Piccolo and Vegeta were the main focus of the show and got the most development. Goku would be absence for most of the saga and his absence would only heightened his character and the anticipation of him showing up. But then again DBZ operated on a long narrative while Beast Wars was more episodic.
