AJH Synth MiniMod Keys // If Hans Zimmer uses these daily...

- Imagine if Moog had made the original Minimoog a modular system, we'd have something very similar to the AJHSynth Minimod Keyz... and something that sounds identical. Buckets full of warm, rich, exquisite vintage vibes in a very handy format.
It's so much more than a minimoog clone - firstly the VCOs are based on the most revered RA Moog version, then there's the addition of ring mod, HP filter, extra LFOs
Plus all the extras that the NiftyCase brings - velocity,. aftertouch, LFO, Arp, Sequencer, zoning, voice modes multi, MIDI... and a whole lot more.
and then obviously the flexibility of a modular system... wonderful :)

Just got my MiniMod Keys delivered... absolutely blown away! 🔥
nice one... :)
Been admiring this synth from afar and am totally convinced after your great review/video. Thank you!
Cheers, I try to be as honest as I can and demo as much within reason, but couldn't think of many negatives here. The only one I forgot to mention, and also because I wasn't quite sure if I was doing something wrong, was the resolution of the on-board Nifty LFO. It seems to jump from rate to rate. It could be sync'd to the clock by default perhaps. I was going to contact Cre8 to ask but completely forgot, which I guess shows it wasn't too much of an issue anyway.
A very well-positioned synth this is
Thanks for chiming in, Yoda!
Thanks for the video … love it
I bought the nifty keyz and finally had to bought the minimod modules…insane!!!
I just made a little change replacing the HPF for the feedback switch module (same hp)…I use resonance as high pass filter …this is a monster in feedback mode
Please more videos with this 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thats one way of doing it!
Nifty keys really needs to come up with an add-on second tier rack that can attach to the keyz!
That, and a brushed aluminum with blue text version, so it could be loaded up with TipTop Buchla modules. :D (maybe even touch plates :D ) Then it could sit next to this one. I think it would be quite a nice pair.
I was on the verge of ordering one after trying it out at NAMM almost a decade ago, when Moog went ahead and reissued the Minimoog in 2016 (replacing my long-lost mid 70's Minimoog). The AJH sounded amazing, and if I had room for one today...
21:07 The drums punching in! Hell yeah! That entire closing composition could punctuate the terminus of a dystopian film or other moody drama. Synth bass + lead crescendo as the film fades out to black, credits begin rolling immediately upon drum punch-in. An attractive proposition NiftyKeyz + AJH. Good stuff.
haha... I had more of an 80s teen flick ... unrequited love in the burbs.
Your channel is one of the best Ty
I'm lusting for an AJH system like ... forever! Well someday ...
it'll be worth the wait.
you can get it gradually .. they sell all the modules .. imo you don't need the whole system 2 oscillators and the filter is enough if you already have a system with all the regular suspects
My favorite channel right now
My favourite comment 👌👌😀
My NiftyKez is centered around a Roland System-500 with a couple extra VCOs. That first paraphonic patch was gorgeous. I need to try that. AJH has been on my radar forever. Clearly these modules are top notch. Sigh… time to upgrade cases for more space again! Thanks a lot.
space is always a problem!! but not one we can't always somehow overcome. :)
Very cool. As soon as I think I have more than I need (want) something like this pops into my feed 😛. The price though... not surprising but it is about the same as my Voyager cost me 16 years ago (plus-or-minus).
finally someone praising this setup 😁
I didn't realise it wasn't getting the thumbs up from others.. sometimes that can influence your thoughts as well. Occasionally I'll get lots of comments around a particular theme that I didn't think was much of an issue, then find there's pages of discussion on forums about it.
@@StarskyCarrtheres not too much about this as a minimoog style synth system on yt as far as i know...i own this setup for some years now ....love it...
@@mw-tc3mv Ah... that'll be why I've not seen anything. Thought I'd missed a load of comments/reviews on it.
My GAS hurts.
Cracking vid Starsks, it’s great, not only to actually see a review of the AJH Niftykeys monster but to have someone doing something musical with modular. I get why we have polysynths but once you listen to the rawness of modular there really is no excuse for owning a monosynth. Which patch cables are they? ❤
they're from AJH themselves. :)
The beauty of modular gear is that if you find you need an extra VCA or mult then you can always get them (in another case... for more money... unless you have lots of stuff already).
You're right. Because stuff is modular you always get people wishing it had more multi/VCAs etc but its precisely because its modular that people are looking to experiment with the architecture and routing in the first place, and precisely why its not too much of an issue. lots of precisely going on!
Brilliant! GAS set to hyperdrive! 😊
haha and so it should be with this! ;)
I’m definitely getting this it’ll take me time I’m gonna have to piece it together but I’m getting it
that's the spirit 😆
would be very keen to see a comparison with a minimoog
I’ve got the 2016 reissue, but it’s not the same as the first and very early version of the mini. I’ve not actually ever put these side by side just to see.
Yes - definitely need a good A/B comparison with your Minimoog, Starsky! That’s where the rubber meets the road … Are these your AJH modules, or was this sent to you for review by AJH?
Beautiful track at 8:03❤
thanks - I couldn't resist having a go at some paraphony.
"That's a very cheesy line, but I quite like it." It sounded like you channeled Keith Lemon there ^^
you want to see some of the stuff I chop out.😂
If I had the money I'd get a GRP Synthesizer A4
had this on in the background while i was cleaning and the lead at 20:48 made me immediatelly turn my head and gave me shivers
thanks, and well done for doing the cleaning 😁
That’s how you do an intro!!!
haha.. cheers. takes ages to get it right, so I can see why no-one else does it 😂
If only cr8audio had designed this so one could directly mount a Doepfer PSU and busboard after having binned those it comes with. Matching premium modules like these with lowest cost power is not a great plan. Looks and sounds brilliant as expected with great onboard features from the modules and keyboard. None of that changes this hidden gotcha.
Had to turn on CC for the Zimmer movie. I hear "Dunkey" and just could not place...
How does it compare with the Studio electronics midimini V30, obviously one is modular and the other not, but besides that ?
IMHO the two are somewhat aimed at different users. SE kit is built for studio pros making a pretty good living at it. While AJH is among the more premium euroroack marks, cr8audio is certainly not. Were I spending at that level for my modules at the very least Doepfer would be housing them. (Best power this side of quality linear setups) I love the look, format and features, but in my experience you eventually regret "cheaping out" on the non-module parts of your modular.
Check out AJH's channel, their demos are really top notch synth musicanship
What are you trying to say 😂😂
0:29 you would have a matriarch 😂
17:08 Synthex laser harp anyone?
Thanks for the video. Nice synth, although you could buy a REAL Moog (Matriarch) that has similar functionality for a grand less, then buy some good outboard FX boxes with the savings. Options, options... 🙂
Different beasts. The matriarch is new tech.. not dissing it - I have the Grandmother. This is all transformers and discrete components, high end stuff, not integrated circuits etc. fwiw my GM is on its second trip to the tech (filter broke then the pitch bend board). Theres a reason these cost more and it’s not profits. It’s what I passed on good
Offer for a Matriarch tbh.
@@StarskyCarr Hmm... a bit worrying to hear about GM breakdowns. I shall have to be extra courteous to my Matriarch... start making it tea and toast in the mornings, that sort of thing. 😉 Cheers.
Audio velvet.
by definition, simply playing more than one note at a time is polyphonic, regardless of it going through a single filter
paraphonic is just a marketing term
It conveys relevant information to a prospective buyer.
@@Goettel exactly... a marketing term. It makes no sense until somebody tells you it means something other than its definition, and therefore should not be used that way.
@@D1570R73D "exactly"? No, relevant information isn't marketing. Not sure what you're playing at tbh.
@@Goettel how is relevant information not marketing? one of the main points of marketing is telling people what your product does.
I don't think you understand what you're talking about.
What is the cost of this beast?
Found it. $3,500. Ouch.
£2800 inc Value Added Tax in the UK. Fair price, sounds remarkable.
Do those old Moogs really sound like this or is this synth quite a bit more buzzy overall?
I think some have the misconception that older 'warmer' sounding synths are duller or less bright. The opposite is often the case. The Minimoog, for example, is much brighter than the Sub 37, Voyager and the MoogerFooger filters.
Search my user videos and you’ll find me demoing my 1972 mini model D for around 20 minutes. This AJH tsetup comes as close to giving me the feeling of playing my model D. It was just absolutely astounding in its ability to be an instrument with real live character. It just had an X factor that I can’t describe, other than just sounding good and demanding your attention. This one does seem to have a bit more high end than mine but I never looked for extremely bright sounds from it because the filters sounded so good I never ran it full open. This has a rubbery low end aggression you don’t hear in much else.
OK, hurt me... how much $$$?
$3500. Ah well.
@@GoettelOof!
$3500. Yikes. I'll wait for BehringerSynth Minimod Keys
Behringer already does the moog 921 oscillators for £90
you could almost make a clone of this yourself in eurorack.
It's your choice...but keep in mind that Behringer products are disposable. No one will repair them beyond the warranty because Behringer prohibits the distribution of circuit diagrams.
😂 very good @thirstycactus
@@vincentprimault4380Analog circuits are so basic that a child could repair them
I think you may be missing the main point here - the quality of AJH modules is outstanding, the sound is sublime and the after-service should you need it is absolutely top notch. The best is rarely the cheapest…
Lovely but Mono.. 😩
4 mins in before remembered my phone speakers probably would not do two-and-a-half-grand of synth any sonic justice
