@@johncaccioppo1142 I never liked "Beat", too nervous, not really "disciplined". 😂 Actually, it's the only KC album I don't listen to. "Thrak" is great, in combination with "Vroom", but... (it's a personal thing I commented on several times before, and I promised not to again).

But as it matched my own progression, musically as well as emotionally, I loved it immediately. For those who remember those days: "Discipline" is a perfect musical representative of that time, (much better of course but still) comparable to what, for example, the Talking Heads, or the Stranglers, were doing then. (Or even the Rolling Stones 😂.)
The thing is, if they went all the way through, it would've ended up being "Zebra Talk", and I don't know how he was going to make zebra sounds on the guitar.

When I first heard this track, I was stunned. The Stick intro, the particular drums sound, the intertwining guitars, Adrian Belew's solo... never heard something like that before. "Elephant Talk" and "Neal and Jack and Me", maybe the best King Crimson tracks ever. Adrian Belew's solo fragments on Neal and Jack and Me are from another dimension.
Funniest line: "These are words with a 'D' this time" Like if we hadn't figured out by then what was going on lyrically, Adrian is gonna tell us anyway
Incredible stuff ...old high school friend had this on an ancient (previously blank cassette ) No CDs yet folks !! recorded off local college station....trying to decipher it all next to Impossible...but did C it all performed on"" Fridays"" as well....Fripp prob at the height of his playing then...he did the Scary Monsters album about this time too ( some of my favorite solos of his there) as well as performing with his League of Gentlemen band....very Fun times to have had (80s)
I saw King Crimson perform Elephant Talk on Saturday Night Live (or Fridays?). Blown away. Just couldn't believe what I was hearing. Ran out and bought the album the next day. Years back I saw them at the State Theater in Detroit. Many bands fail during live performances. It can't be faked. Seeing King Crimson live is like seeing a force of nature. Unbelievably talented in every way.
This incarnation of Crimson is one of the loudest bands I've ever seen LIVE. (YES in The Round at the Forum in L.A. takes The Crown.) Saw them at the Greek Theater (open air in a residential neighborhood) and the metal seats which were bolted down to the cement were literally vibrating under me. Low frequency Tony Levin. I'm sure the neighbors were pleased. LOL.
I remember show open '84 Larks Tongues III NYC Pier on the Hudson river, Tony was playing his bass (L), bass synth (R) and bass pedals (foot) all at the same time.
King crimson gave birth to math rock on this album..In many ways Discipline can be considered the very first math rock song although u can hear elements of math rock on stuff like Fracture as far back as Starless and Bible black from 1974. Danny Carey from Tool has named it one of his favourite albums and credits Bruford's drumming as a big inspiration.

Just read in Chris Frantz’ book Remain in Love: “We learned in June he used the guitar effect he’d come up with for a song we’d written called L’Elephant on a song King Crimson would call Elephant Talk. Cool. We had talked to Adrian about becoming a permanent member of Tom Tom Club as a singer and guitarist. Somehow, this was misinterpreted by Adrian. We later found out by reading an interview he did that he thought we were asking him to replace David in Talking Heads, as if we could do that.”
Nothing will ever top the shock of listening to Discipline on top of Mt. Evans, on what was North America's highest paved road, in a '69 Bronco with the soft-top on in 90mph wind thirty minutes after drinking a stiff pot of psilocybe tea. Good times. I like it!
Hallucinogenics are so much fun. Not seeing spiders bore out of peoples arms, or your dates face turning lupine (that wasn't fun at all) or mistaking a floor duct for a portal to Hell fun (that wasn't me so it was kind of funny especially when he called the police crying)...lol... That's just too much fcukiñg fun. I mean in smaller more manageable doses where you just think you're a Superman or Immortal.

This album was pivotal for me, sparking a renewed interest in rock music after having put it aside in favor of jazz for a decade. At the time, these were new sounds to the world, but the proficiency of the players musically was evident and abundant from all four members. The sounds- just colors on their pallet, but the combination delivered a punch. To my ears- it still sounds vital today.
I heard this at a record store in Baltimore a few days after it was released, a dude working there said "Hey you guys, check this out..." and dropped the needle on Elephant Talk. Needless to say, the journey began ...
I was 10 when my father purchased all of these in CD format and used to play them as background noise in the car, at home, when we went on vacations... It pulled me through a rough childhood. To be honest, it might be one of the reasons I'm still around. Discipline is my favorite Crimson album, Adrian is my favorite Crimson singer, and this track opened my mind to an universe I'm still exploring to this day. Being grateful that I'm still alive and kicking thanks to this album would be too short of words, but it's true.

Happy 40th Anniversary of the release of this astounding album! It blew my mind when I heard it soon after it came out, and it has remained in my top 10 of all time.
When I was a kid in the early 80s, our market had an unusual feature - and "alternative" public television station in addition to the regular PBS fare. They had their own music video program, originally called FM TV (although they eventually sold that name to a nationally syndicated show and changed to Teletunes). This song was played over the intro. Today is the first time I heard it in full.
Remember first hearing this and then seeing them up in Columbus. We drove up from cincinnati. I think it was January of 1982. I had seen Tony Levin but never had seen Bill bruford, Robert fripp or Adrian Belew who I was really into at the time. I was just like what the f*** am I seeing? It was a nice answer to all the synth rock that was going on. Guitars! Yes!
My new favorite version of this song is Tony Levin's solo bowed-bass, performed during their 2021 tour. I swear he was half-way through before I realized what he was doing.
Tony Levin is takes the bass to a whole new level. Sounds that meld with the whole feel and texture of every song. His Stick playing on this song is mind blowing.

This is a childhood song for me. This isnt exactly how i learned my abc's but it is surely in that same time period where i associate really listening to the song and loving it, when crimson was on growing up. Adrien belew, zappa, and John Lennon's lyrics always lit up my brain in a special way
My mind was blown when I saw them perform this on the TV show "Fridays." They purposefully shocked the world playing unusual textured music on brand new types of instruments. I saw all their shows at Berkeley's Greek Theater. Pure magic!
Never would have thought Primus was inspired by late King Crimson but here I am. But then again I only really listened to very early KC. I was more obsessed with early KC and Zappa's 70s output.
And from here I went out and bought all of Adrian's solo albums. Just opinion but if you can put three drummers onstage you could have done a "Union" style tour like Yes without excluding Belew. The last formation of KC was great but Jingoistic. How could you wet on 30+ years of great music?? Belew brought to KC in the eighties and nineties what Jamie Muir did in the seventies,direction.

I heard Jerry Was A Race Car Driver by Primus before I heard this. It was interesting to hear where Les Claypool got the inspiration for his bassline.
Tony Levin is a big influence on Claypool, that's for certain. Two truly magnificent bassists!

Thats a big jump, a giant leap, from "Epitaph" to "Discipline" - and an almost completely different King Crimson - the evolution of Robert Fripp.

My new favorite version of this song is Tony Levin's solo bowed-bass, performed during their 2021 tour. I swear he was half-way through before I realized what he was doing.
Tony Levin is takes the bass to a whole new level. Sounds that meld with the whole feel and texture of every song. His Stick playing on this song is mind blowing.

One of my absolute favorites.
This is a childhood song for me. This isnt exactly how i learned my abc's but it is surely in that same time period where i associate really listening to the song and loving it, when crimson was on growing up. Adrien belew, zappa, and John Lennon's lyrics always lit up my brain in a special way

My mind was blown when I saw them perform this on the TV show "Fridays." They purposefully shocked the world playing unusual textured music on brand new types of instruments.
I saw all their shows at Berkeley's Greek Theater. Pure magic!

Never would have thought Primus was inspired by late King Crimson but here I am. But then again I only really listened to very early KC. I was more obsessed with early KC and Zappa's 70s output.

King crimson was one of the first bands I really got into. Its been so weird to me how other some other bands stay so constant over so few albums.
This tune has influenced the way I think of any music I make. Top to bottom, it's absolutely perfect.

And from here I went out and bought all of Adrian's solo albums. Just opinion but if you can put three drummers onstage you could have done a "Union" style tour like Yes without excluding Belew. The last formation of KC was great but Jingoistic. How could you wet on 30+ years of great music?? Belew brought to KC in the eighties and nineties what Jamie Muir did in the seventies,direction.
