- Ever wondered what a GIAC proctored exam looked like? Let me take you on a journey of taking the exam myself - for the SANS Foundations in Cybersecurity I did this spring. I'll take you through exam details, my preparation for the exam, practice tests, booking the exam, and what it looks like during and after the exam itself. Plus I'll share my tips for anyone taking a GIAC exam!
Thank you, @SANSInstitute for sponsoring this video! Ask any questions you may have about the course, the exam or the certification in the comments :)

OLD! YOU ARE STILL A YOUNG BEAUTY! Like 99% of all computer programming test I took as a kid back in the 1990's were open book. I also taught college computers part time for 15 years, almost all were open book tests.
Great videos! Very cool! LOVE IT! FUN TO WATCH! Keep the vids coming!
I found an interesting job ad asking for GIAC. It looks interesting.
Thank you for sharing your experience with studying for it!
Thank you, for taking the time and posting this... I'm having a really hard time and needed that
I’m so glad it was helpful!
@@StereotypeBreakers Sorry for the newb question, are we allowed to share our index? I guess I could ask in Slack...
Congratulations!!!! You deserve it!! *clapped really hard*
Impressive score. You can be proud of yourself. Congratulations to your great achievement, and many thanks for sharing your experience. Received a link to your video with a SANS newsletter today. ☺️
Thank you!! I hope this exam walk through was helpful 🙌
Thank you so much for this video! My exam is just around the corner, so I was hoping your video would come out soon which it did. It was a great overview. Thanks for going into such detail.
I’m so glad this is helpful! One more thing that I wanted to add (going to pin a comment about this tomorrow) is if you do need to take a break, make sure you do that before you really need the bathroom. You gotta answer al of the questions that you’ve skipped then and it’s not fun when you’re desperate 😅
@@StereotypeBreakers Okay! Thanks for the advice!
@@StereotypeBreakers One more question for ya, how close would you say the actual exam is to the practice exams. Are they pretty similar in terms of covering the same topics? If I get a high score on the practice exams, does that mean I'd likely get a high score on the actual test? Thanks!
@@isaiahstoddard3053 the questions were different, but they were similar to the ones on the practice test. So I’d say it’s not a sure indicator as the questions are unlikely to repeat word for word, but it feels very similar. Since it’s an open book exam I’d recommend using the practice tests as also a test for your notes and your ability to find information there. I hope this helps!
Thank you for this video. It helped me alot.
So glad to hear that!!
Thank you for putting this together. I've watched a few GIAC study videos and this is the only one that follows the test taker on her study/exam journey.
Are the binders full of just your notes or are the slides in there? I was planning on just using my index with some notes in it plus the individual books that SANS supplied but now you got me thinking... XD
Congratulations!
am challenged. am going for mine as well. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing this useful informative video
Congratulations on the GFACT certification, Masha!! 👏
Thank you very much!
Hello , can you tell me please which software's we need to install with proctorU? how could you create account on proctorU
An interesting technique not to index the actual SANS material. It seems like you learn better by building out your own notes, like your outline at 4:34. Congratulations!
Congratulations 🍻🍻🍻
This was great. I'm applying to the SANS undergrad certificate program and GFACT will be the first cert as part of the first course. Your video gave me exactly what I was looking for...how to prep notes! I've heard that notes notes and more notes are the key to GIAC exams. Thanks for putting this out.
I havent touched thr books yet and i have only been working through the online videos. Exam is in 2 weeks and now im worried lol
Thanks
Hi! Are there any free resources for giac cert. If there are any let me know please.
How to get the books without training... ?
Was there a lot of programming on it? Did you have to set up multiple servers or all question based knowledge like.
Hi.. how many total no. of hours u gave to this certification…or how many hr. per day..
awesome
how to book for GFACT exam?
Hey, what cost GSOC cert. Thanks! Keep it going!
Looks like if you take the course in this format, they will not mail you the study material --- you need to print them yourself. But if you have the option to study with other people, then the material is sent to you. Is this correct?
SO with SANS can I study on my own and then use SANS for the exam? or do I have to pay for their course and then exam?
Are we allowed to use the official SANS GFACT books during the exam? Or only our written notes?
I believe you can use text books, you can’t use any materials consisting exam answers
Congrats I think Ill use some of this as I study for the COMPTIA Sec plus
Thank you! I hope this video was useful for your exam prep!
@@StereotypeBreakers definitely was. Try to to engulf myself with all the CyberSecurity and tech info I can get. So I’ve added your page to one of my favs.
Yay! Thank you 🙌
@@StereotypeBreakers Sorry I meant to tell you that I follow you o IG as well. More "engulfing" lol
Did it enable you to get a job in cybersecurity?
Appreciate your video, I think you would’ve been better off indexing the SANS material with tabs (they are x100 times cleaner than sticky notes).
would you please share your notes with us.
Why didn’t you follow any of the indexing methods? It sounds like you made a lot of extra work for yourself.
Can you put page numbers for certain topics to navigate quickly?
If that helps you, for sure! I had page numbers and an index for it
For anyone watching this video, this is NOT AT ALL how you study for a GIAC exam. You use the books and make an index (as has been the approach of test takers for 20 years). When you get to the more advanced exams, you'll not only struggle to make effective notes but you'll realise it's an ineffective method of study, despite what your own experiences might be.
Honestly how you can handle that INDEX? Too much stuff and not well organized. But congratulations
I am too old to learn anything now i am not even interested. Is someone the one to defeat cyber attackers.
Well, you have told me truth why i got the problem i am okay with that, if only i was told in the beginning. There is nothing i can do here this is not my country if i am in my country, there will be people to stand for me. people sturdy when they are young not when they are almost going to the grave year. I thought you have come to relieve my pain. My work Place i don't work.
I am 62 yr old still study in cyber security , I will taking my cloud computing exam in 1 month time, age in cyber security is not a problem, the right attitudes and passion toward IT is important, I start of without any knowledge of IT.
Please be aware that these exams cost money and you employer should pay for them. There courses are not for beginners who wanna start a career in cybersecurity, false hopes.
