    Here where I live, you are only supposed to apply Milorganite 2x per year and when you do, you are supposed to use a "half rate" which means 32lbs only covers 5,200 sq ft rather than 2,500.
    This is because Milo contains phosphorous, and in Florida, we have higher phos in our soils naturally, and in addition, the state of Florida believes that runoff can occur with heavier rates sitting in the lawn.
    More detailed breakdown of nitrogen rates for those who like to understand the "why" behind my recommendations:

    Podcast on Florida blackouts and phos:
    • GLYPHOSATE In My DRINK...
    Does LCN still use Milorganite? Yes, 2x per year. Memorial Day and Labor Day and I use the half rate suggested on the bag. My lawn is always green and it stays green when I apply Milo. However, as you can see in this video, the .36lbs/N that you get isn't enough to fully jumpstart a lawn that has not been fertilized in a long time.

      On the right hand side of the plastic stopper, there looked to be a little tab to line up with the numbers. If you adjust that does it make more sense on the 15 being half way? It looks like at minute marker 7:01 you were past the 30 mark.

      You can go wrong with Milo. Allow the soil tests to determine what and when to put on the lawn. I live about 5 minutes away from Allyn and would never use Milo, but not because it bad. We have very high phosphorous sandy soil so the extra P is not needed. The potassium in the soil is non-existent, so adding some makes for a healthier lawn. Allyn wasted his or his neighbor's money.

    So complicated, here is the easy way to figure fert rates.
    Let's use a fert with 20% nitrogen. I don't care what the bag weight is, does not matter. Divide the 20 into 100, 100/20=5. In this case, 5 lbs. of this particular fertilizer per 1000 square feet will give you one lb. of nitrogen per 1000 square feet.
    Now, if you want a half pound per 1000 square feet, just divide the number in half. 5/2=2.5. In this case you would apply 2.5 lbs. of this product per 1000 square feet to get 1/2 lb. of nitrogen per 1000 square feet.
    You only want 1/3 of a pound? 5/3=1.66 lbs. per 1000 square feet will get you 1/3 of a pound of nitrogen.
    Hope that helps!

    • @davidhurwich8941
      @davidhurwich8941 Рік тому

      Totally agree with this, and it's the approach I use. I generally want 1 lb of N on the ground, so the above is how I calculate how many lbs of fert I need to put down per 1000 sq ft of lawn. Bag rate is meaningless. All about the % of N in the product, and how many lbs of N you want on the ground.

      Just a tip to save you tons of money, if you buy a 33-0-4, at 60 a bag you will get the same rate as Milorganite with less that a quarter bag. I love the stuff but when you really break the math down it's the most expensive fert on the market

    • @Orangeokie7
      @Orangeokie7 Рік тому +2

      @@lsumaniac2485 oh, I definitely agree. I don't exclusively use Milorganite. I actually started the season dissolving urea and spraying it. I like to start using Milorganite when it gets extremely hot like right now. I'm also using the white 50lb bag because the prills are super small and since I use a reel mower on my Bermuda, it helps to get down below the grass canopy. I get the best by doing double bag rate. Set the spreader to what ever the bag says or do the math if not listed. Then one app across the lawn. Then do it a second time across the yard perpendicular to the previous pass. Barring soil issues, nice even, dark green lawn. Usually do this in spring and fall. Single passes in the months inbetween. A couple of those will be synthetic fert to get some other nutrients missing from milo.

      Liquid is great but it comes with its own confusion in calibrating the sprayer. Gotta get the correct amount of liquid down on the correct size area. The more you do either the better you will get. Keep at it.

    • @davidhurwich8941
      @davidhurwich8941 Рік тому +2

      You can, but you don't want to. I live in Dallas, and have St Aug. You want an application of fertilizer at the beginning of June, and then...nothing else through at least mid-september. Reason is- nitrogen drives the bus, and promotes growth. However...in the dog days of summer, when it's 100, the lawn doesn't want to grow- it wants to go into conservation mode. But by giving it fert, you're encouraging it to do something it doesn't want to do. 2nd- a lot of nitrogen during hot days encourages fungus (gray leaf spot). And hence...why Neil Sperry recommends no fert during the summer (if you don't know who Neil is, google for his website. He's the king of Texas gardening)

    As far as im concerned it's stupidly expensive these days given what else is available and what it contains. Ive been using an Andersons product this year that I love now. It's got tiny granules and goes down great. I have been doing 6lbs of humichar and fert apps every 6 weeks. About 2/3 a lb of N.

    • @mitch1847
      @mitch1847 Рік тому

      You're correct. I live about 5 minutes away from Allyn and our very sandy soil is extremely high in phosphorous. Never used Milo and never will. Too expensive and there are other alternatives that will do the job just fine. Allow the soil test results to determine what to put on the lawn, not just because lots of people use Milo. Allyn either wasted his or his neighbor's money.

    • @heavymechanic2
      @heavymechanic2 10 місяців тому

      I agree that Milo will cost you as much as paying a lawn service. This is my recipe; triple 12 and any lawn fertilizer mixed 50/50 and I get good results as it gives me something around 20-8-10 depending upon the products. A light app of Milo just gives me an iron pop but spread at one bag per 15K.

    I’m not sure I understand. There is a regular rate and then Florida rate. The amount of nitrogen does not remain the same 6% wouldn’t it be about 3% because of the different rate. For example if a regular beer was given it would have so much effect on a 100lb person but when administered to a 200lb man in Florida it’s not the same alcohol per lb distributed because the surface area is greater. Maybe, I’m just dumb.
