    Bought this game almost 10 years ago, but didn't get to play it often since most board games nights have more than 2 people. Brought this out after the pandemic lockdowns recently and played it again. Thanks for this walk through because it helped with clearing up mistakes we made in our game.

    There it is! One of my all-time favourite games. I'm always so impressed by how quickly you learn games and how few mistakes you do. You're also always so evenly matched, and to really enjoy this game I believe you need to have close to the same level of experience. The production was very good as usual and it was easy to follow your actions.
    Now, tell me honestly, since you are so even, doesn't it feel just a little more important to get that win....?

    • @AllAboardBoardgames
      @AllAboardBoardgames  3 роки тому +1

      Hi SIrbrastias! Haha... yeah, I guess you have been waiting for this one since you spotted it sitting on our shelf. Twilight Struggle is pretty tough, and intense but what a great game! I can see why you love it! The levels of complexity are mind-boggling, and it is as important to manage the cards that favour your opponent as it is to play your own at the right timing. You constantly have to be keeping an eye on every region on the board, and it is often a tough decision whether to use your cards for the event or for the Ops. The history of the Cold War jumps out at you and especially during the late war I find myself going "Ooooohhh, I remember that!".
      Yeah, getting the win when we are so even is pretty big for us, especially in a game as strategic as this. Actually we are both very competitive and this week I have been kind of moping around whereas Glai has an extra spring in her step! lol I'll have to try harder to restore proper order for this week's game (though Glai has a different idea of what "proper order" is!).

  • @keithdm1313

    Another outstanding playthrough! Congratulations to Glai on her close victory. Glai's effort in turning the Middle East was the key to victory. Pat certainly got excellent mileage out of the Red Scare and Norad cards... I felt sorry for Glai when Pat repeatedly cancelled her cards during the Headline Phase. All in all another great playthrough of a great game. Both of you have built a very entertaining channel, and it has become one of my favorites. Thanks to both of you.

      Hi Keith. Thanks a lot for your very kind comment. It means a lot to us to hear that we are one of your favourite channels! What a nice compliment! We're delighted that you enjoyed the video.
      Yeah, Twilight Struggle is a very aggressive game and I felt bad for Glai when I played Defectors to cancel her headline, and the Red Scare/Purge 3 times to reduce her Ops! In fairness, she knew that there was a possibility of a Defectors so she didn't always headline her best card. The Muslim Revolution was huge for her in the Middle East. Between that and Nasser, it is a very difficult region for the US... Norad is fantastic though - as long as you have an influence in USSR controlled countries, you can stick in a free influence which is a great help in breaking control, especially if the stability number is high. All in all, it's a brilliant game!

      @@AllAboardBoardgames Hey thanks! I'm positive it'll be a memorable time with my father. This isn't rwally my first game but 2022 is my first year of delving into this hobby. Yes, TS is indeed very deep and I first heard it from Sung Won aka ProZD who is known for voice acting and skits, who is also really into board games (he is actually my first inspiration for picking up board games). I had a bunch in my shelf for a while first being Sushi Go Party, then Dixit, Poitlnt Salad, Ticket to Ride, Cabo, Space Base then my first love: Everdell. Then I went straight to heavy ones like On Mars (😂 yeah that was a monster of a game, but so worth it to learn), Kanban EV, Lisboa, Barrage, Age of Steam, Root and my latest: Twilight Struggle.
      PS, the close up of cards in your videos are really helpful. Forgot to mention that. Very slick and great of a help. Thanks again! 😊

      We're glad that the close up of the cards is helpful to you. Cards are so important to so many games, so we thought that it would be helpful to pop them out so you guys could see them clearly and hopefully make it easier to follow what is going on in the game.

      On Mars was such a huge jump, but in all honesty it is subjectively my no. 1 game so far. But downside is it’s super difficult to bring to the table. I think it’ll be worth of a try for the two of you! I mean I love the chemistry between you Pat and Glai and near the late war part things are getting intense. On Mars is actually really intense in 2p mode. Very thinky and confrontational. Euro down to the very core.

      Hi Alexandre. Thanks a lot for your comment. It's great to hear that you are enjoying the video. Realignments can be great, especially if you have control of the countries around the one you want to realign, but it also carries the danger of getting a bad roll and losing influence yourself. But, there certainly are situations where realigning would be worth doing. Hope you enjoy the game when you get your hands on it!

      @AllAboardBoardgames  8 місяців тому

      Hello there. Thanks for watching our video. Really glad to hear that it was helpful to your learning of the game. As regards Realignments vs Coups, Realignments just remove influence and never add any. You can also lose your own influence in the target country so it can be a bit dangerous. Coups are a bit less of a risk. Realignments can sometimes be good though because they do not affect the DEFCON level. In general we prefer to use Coups though.

    Thank you two so much for creating this playthrough. I'm just learning the game, and your work has benefited me tremendously.
    That said, I've got a question...
    At the 50:48 mark, the USA player indicates that he's adding an additional 1-point of influence in the Philippines, and replaces the marker there with a blue, face-up control marker.
    However, the USSR player intervenes, points at the Philippines stability value, a 2, indicates that the USA doesn't control the country, and flips the marker back to it's white side. At that point, the USA player appears to agree.
    Could someone please explain exactly what occurred in this situation, as it appeared that adding a second influence marker to the Philippines actually DID give the USA control? :)

      Hi Koushami. For the scoring you can only score for Control, Domination OR Presence. Of course if you have Domination, then you also have Presence, but you only score for the highest level that you have. So, in the case of the Asia Scoring, Glai had Domination which gave her 7 points. She does not also score for having Presence. Then she also scored for her Battleground country (North Korea) and gets 1 point for that. Pat only had Presence, so he gets 3 points (for Australia). That gives Glai +5 points.
      As regards Europe, Pat had Domination worth 7 points + 3 battlegrounds bringing him up to 10. Once again, he does not also score for Presence. Glai had Presence worth 3 points + 2 battlegrounds for a total of 5 points. That gives Pat a +5 on this one.

    If someone controls a region it cost 2 influence to break there hold (3:00) it then goes back to costing one

    • @AllAboardBoardgames
      @AllAboardBoardgames  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Wayne. Thanks for your comment. Glai was able to break my control of West Germany because of the Cambridge Five card played at 2:39. She was able to add an influence anywhere in Europe because I had the European Scoring card. If she had been playing a card for the Ops value and using it to place influence, then she would indeed have had to pay 2 influence to break control.

    Hi! Thanks for the video, it was really helpful, I have a question, though. At 2:12:54 why did Pat became dominant in South America? Pat controlls 2 BG countries and Glai controlls only one. That's clear. But Pat and Glai both control only 1 normal country each. So Pat is not dominant in SA, because he does not control more normal countries than his opponent. Am is missing something? In order to be dominent in a region you have to control more BG countries AND more normal countries, right? Thanks in advance!

    • @AllAboardBoardgames
      @AllAboardBoardgames  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Dávid. We're very happy to hear that our video was helpful to you. As regards your question, Domination is when you control more countries and more Battleground countries than your opponent, and you must control at least 1 non-Battleground country and at least 1 Battleground country. When it is stated that you must control "more countries", this means the total number of countries (Battleground and non-Battleground) that you control in the region. In this case, Pat controls 3 countries (2 Battleground and 1 non-Battleground) to Glai's 2 countries (1 Battleground and 1-non Battleground). You do not necessarily have to control more non-Battleground countries as long as you control at least 1 of them.
      If you have any other questions please feel free to ask!

      @@AllAboardBoardgames Thank you very much! Unfortunately, I have the most recent print, and GMT changed the rules: the publisher "cut out" sentences from the original rulebook, so it became shorter but in my opinion it is not as clear as the previes versions. I have another question, if You don't mind: at 2:11:18 Pat counts the EU points, but I think he made a mistake, he would have got one extra point, because Poland is a BG country and it is next to to USSR so it worths 2 points. Am I right? So just for clarification: Domination → You control more countries than your opponent and MORE BG countries than your opponent(but you have to control at least 1 of each types of countries). Control → You control ALL of the BG countries, AND you control MORE normal countries than your opponent. Is it right? Thanks again!

    • @AllAboardBoardgames
      @AllAboardBoardgames  3 роки тому +1

      @@davidvenyercsan8424 It is a shame that they cut out sentences if it is going to make the game unclear. There are quite a few rules in Twilight Struggle to get your head around, so I'm sorry to hear that the new rulebook is not as easy to understand.
      Yes Dávid, you are absolutely correct about Poland, and we missed that one in our scoring. I (Pat) should have gotten an extra point because Poland is adjacent to the USSR.
      You are correct about Domination → You control more countries than your opponent and MORE BG countries than your opponent(but you have to control at least 1 of each types of countries).
      Control is a little bit different → you have to control more countries in the Region that your opponent and you must control ALL of the BG countries. You do not necessarily need to control any of the non-BG countries to get control.
      As for the Asia scoring, to get Domination one of us would have had to have had more BG countries than the other so there was no need to count the non-BG countries.

      Hi there. Twilight Struggle is a very deep game. It is quite long, and it is very heavy, so we find that it can be difficult to get it to the table. However, if you are the kind of person who plays heavy games, and you have someone who is also interested in them, then I would say that the game is very replayable. You will see most of the cards each time you play, but the different orders in which they come out affect the board in different ways. You have a lot of choices each turn so every time you play will be different. I hope this helps!

    I am confused - in the first headline phase, Pat plays a 4 ops card, and Glai plays a 2 ops card. So why does Glai go first in that round? I thought the ops value of a card in the headline phase determined which player goes first during that turn.

    • @AllAboardBoardgames

      Hi Matthew. No, the ops value of the card does not determine which player goes first apart from in the headline phase. The USSR player always goes first. Hello there. To resolve a Coup attempt, you roll a die and add the Ops points on the card to it. Then you multiply the Stability Number of the target country by 2. In this case, Italy has a Stability Value of 2, so 2 x 2 = 4. If the modified die roll is greater than the doubled stability number, the coup is successful, otherwise it fails. Hope this helps! Kai Fuller, thank you for your advice. We will consider inter-cutting the player comments, but one thing that we would be a bit concerned about is that we do not want to interrupt the flow of the game. We like our viewers to be able to follow the game clearly and formulate their own strategies as the game goes on, in an attempt to make our videos more inclusive. That is why, at the end we just try to give a taste of what we were thinking or trying to do during the game. We always appreciate feedback and advice so thanks for your comment!
