1:22 Thank you for mentioning this As a fan of Halo this is something that really bothered me, even trying to view the show as it's own thing And this isn't even just with Chief either, but the show as a whole "No no, we're our own thing, we can do whatever we like! But we're not going to explain fundamental aspects of the universe, and we're going to have a huge twist in episode 1 with 0 emotional weight behind it" It's genuinely just a shame that the show feels like they *tried* to change as many aspects as they could There's a couple small aspects you got slightly wrong (unless they're all references to other stuff), but nothing that really matters (not that the showrunners would notice lmao) Agree with most of what you said through most of this though, good stuff, main thing I disagree with is at the end where you said he's "Just John". From the perspective of a standalone thing (which I guess it's supposed to be), sure, he's "just John". But compared to canon Halo material, he doesn't act like John or Chief. The joke name Jimmy Rings somehow feels more accurate
@@chasepeterson8789 He is. I'm still waiting for an answer from him on why this show is good. I expect my question to go unanswered just like every other time I asked someone.
A lot of effort was put into making the marines feel alive in the games. They joke in noncombat scenes, banter among each other in the firefights, call for aid, apologize for friendly fire, express relief when the chief shows up, express awe at seeing a real spartan and have lines that relate to the current situation. The developers went out of their way to make them feel like real people, looking at combat footage and discovering what real people (Marines?) say in combat. Throughout the games, Chief is very reserved when around the marines. He doesn't show a lot of emotion. But he does act heroically. He pulls that one marine into the dropship on the first mission, spends the 2nd mission rescuing stranded marines and navy personnel and then spends the rest of the 3 games risking his ass for humanity. In the game you can sort of feel his loneliness just by his reserved dialogie when surrounded by the marines. He doesn't say a lot but he is definitely characterized as someone who puts duty first, and his reserved manner hints that it takes a toll on him. A lot of those marines he saves dies, and the helmet hides nost signs of grief. But there is personality there. There are subtle hints that he cares, a few jaded or sassy/cynical lines of dialogue... the way he risks himself for others... the tendency towards high adrenaline risky manievers that could get him killed... these all say something about him. But for most of the game, Cortana is the one showing emotion. She speaks for Chief, both figuratively and literally, by answering questions addreased to him, and showing emotions he is not allowed to. She sasses Chief, shows affection towards Keyes that Chief is implied to feel, and wears her emotions a bit more openly. So throughout the course of the 3 games we see Chief characterized by his interactions with Cortana. At first she says things like "hey, there are 2 of us in here now" implying he is risks himself more than he should. Then you begin to see him sass her back a little. Then he starts to show concern and respect for her as a person instead of a tool... Then, in the game I haven't played, he makes personal sacrifices because he believes in her. He trusts her and takes her side or something. I don't know how that game worked, but there are definitely songs about that relationship. Look up Frozen Sleep. So, long story short, there is character there, its just subtle. And trying to make it not subtle is a terrible tv idea. If they wanted to go that route, they should have done a Reach type plot where he saves the day a few times but slowly loses the members of his team. Introduce the other apartans in season2, after he's been all stoic, and then show him caring for them in subtle ways. Maybe he remembers another spartans birthday and gets her a little something. Maybe he asks about the pilots cat... subtle things that shows he cares abiit those around him, even as he is forced to spend their lives to win a war. Also, take out the mcguffins. Have the objectoves be military objectives instead of scifi bullshit. Thats how you write a good story. And of you need chief to have a character arc, you can have him risk the mission for a teammate like he did in the books. (Yeah, they managed to nake him a character in a book series, its not like there is no precedent to John having a character.)
I haven't seen this show, but I do think that it's funny that as the franchise continues to expand, Spartans get more and more human looking. The story used to harp on the genetic experimentation and augmentations that led to the creation of these 8 foot tall hulking behemoths. In the mini series Forward Unto Dawn, when they de-masked (except for Master Chief of course), they had pale dead eyes and thousand-yard stares. Now, between HALO 5 and this latest show...they're just kind-of tall people in heavy armor. Sometimes. Honestly, their sizes feel VERY inconsistent in this show given what I've seen in this video. At the end of the day, they might as well just be ODST's. And on a side note, compared to FUD, this new series looks very flat and cheap visually. Like a CW show.
The scene you are referencing from Forward Unto Dawn about Blue Team looking like some pale ass motherfuckers is because they are SPARTAN-II's and went through a more challenging augmentation. You start to see them looking normal in Halo: Reach because Noble Team were SPARTAN-III's - except Jorge. The reason for SPARTAN-III's looking 'normal' is because ONI wanted to create cheaper and more expendable SPARTANs. You can research the lore and find that over 500 III's were KIA throughout the Human-Covenant war, but less than 60 II's were killed. SPARTAN-IV's were created with volunteers which is why you see Buck becoming a IV. This is why SPARTAN-III's and IV's would get their asses kicked by a II. They haven't gone through the full augmentation process. ONI wanted quantity over quality with the newer iterations of the SPARTAN Program. And yes, they aren't pale in the series because the showrunners and actors didn't play the games, read the books, or consume literally anything Halo related.
During chiefs upcoming into becoming a spartan, the experiments were a lot more intrusive and dangerous. As time went on, those type of experiments started to fade because not a lot of kids were making it. So you’re right in a sense
@@appraxen5342 That's interesting. Reach is my second favorite HALO game right under ODST. (Spicy take.) And I guess in my mind I always assumed that Noble Team were ODST's also because they were so much more human. Thanks for the info. I'll remember that and TRY to be less critical of the show.
@@samueltheprideofafrikarobi9319 Meh, I wouldn't consider it a spicy take. A lot of people have the same opinion that you probably have. ODST was, in my opinion, the best Halo. The whole detective story mixed with the vulnerability and fear you felt as a player when playing as the Rookie made it such a fun and memorable experience because you weren't playing as some gigachad super-soldier that carries humanity in almost every battle you're part of. Plus the OST was epic, likewise with the ambience of New Mombasa.
Dude yes, even I remember FUD main plot, which I mean isnt saying much since it wasnt that in-depth, but damn. Havent watched the show either but just hearing the summaries of each episode makes me cringe, lore and fan based wise.
The main problem with the show is that the spartans who were previously controlled by the lack of knowing what it is like to not be a soldier which created interesring character moments (like how chief found his first conpanions in blue team and cortana and the bond between them) however the show dumbs it down so it is just a chip in their butt. It removes so much of what made spartans good protagonists.

“it did feel like in order to tell a human story about a soldier exploring his identity, about the effects of war on society and the effects of war on the individual, in order to tell the story of that over a long form you really needed to get under the helm” …that is not the story of Halo👀
the whole point of hiding a character's face behind a mask is so the viewer can interpret the character's emotions based their own reactions, which allows the viewer to actively participate in the story. You know, kind of like in a video game 🤷🏼♀️
Inkr my point exactly here's the thing that bothers me when they try too do movies or shows from videogames the thing is is that videogames is a interactive media lololl u pretend or play like it's u u out yourself into the role so yah honestly as a long time videogamer honestly it drives me up the walk when I c people trying too make a movie from a videogame it very very rarely panes out as good Soo yah that's my 2 cents lol
Arcane is also superb, it and Castlevania are unquestionably the best video game adaptations Funny how keeping faithful to the successful source material breaks the video game adaptation curse…
His helmet never should of came off. Bungie played with the idea that his helmet was his face. Narratively, his suit and his visor was his physical self. It feels like a cheap writers shortcut to ignore those possibilities and go for a run of the mill heroes journey. His mechanic helmet represented a zeitgeist of doing what’s best for the most amount of people. Like wall-e, a movie for kids, the motives were still familiar to anyone who watched it. Nuanced dialogue should of been the focus.
"This one is machine and nerve, and has it's mind concluded..." The Gravemind put it best, Chief isn't really human. He's more an emotionless cyborg at that point in the story, focused solely on completing his task, than anything else.
It isn't that they showed his face per se, I do feel like it could have been done eventually; it's that they did it Episode 1 with absolutely 0 build-up or character development, as if they expected all of that to carry over from the games despite repeatedly telling the audience it was a completely different timeline and not the halo we knew.
This received the the World War Z book to movie treatment. It had a few characters with the same names but they act nothing like those they are based off, it has similar environment since the games and show had alien's in them and it has the same name. its honestly a slap in the face to fans of the series and to the series itself.
I like that they actually f*cked themselves from any hope of being remotely game accurate by drilling Cortana into his f*cking skull instead of the USB Z port at the back of his head and helmet.
A few inaccuracies aside, I thought this was a much better (and fairer) critique of the series' strengths and weaknesses than most I've seen. I do wish folks would stop comparing it to Mando regarding the helmet issue, though. The two have very different reasons for wearing their helmets, and the only reason Chief never shows his face in-game (he does remove the helmet) is so we can better see ourselves as him. That said, I fucking screamed at him when he took it off in an active combat zone in ep five. 🤣
TBF with the helmet thing from what I’ve heard Spartans feel most comfortable well in their armor so removing their helmet isn’t something they really wanted to do at least the spartan II’s from what I’ve heard
@@insertusernamehere163 I think I remember some Spartans feeling that way, especially after prolonged deployments, but I don't recall it being a prevailing attitude. I'm willing to acknowledge I may be forgetting some details of the lore from the books, though. I've got to do a reread.

My issue with halo, it was so bad it hurt, reach was glassed before master chief was let loose, they are artificially changed to have no emotion, not by chipping, if you’re going to make a show based off an IP, learn the IP…. It’s also one of the problems is that pissed off gamers was the new direction is so similar to the old direction it kind of feels like it someone asked to cheat off your test and you get a solid B+ or can they get a C minus and you just look at them gone bro how? Even when you cheat you fuck it up
I hate any show that uses modern guns with a bunch of sci-fi bs on it to represent future weapons. Especially when the source material has plenty of original props that aren’t hard to replicate.
I despised everything about this series and can't quantify everything I dislike about it without coming off ranty forever because I do deeply loved the story and lore told in the games and books. This TV series fundamentally disregarding everything that made Halo well...Halo just for the sake of "it being a different timeline". This desire from the show runners, directors, or investors who whoever ran this shit show doesn't make up for the basic problems of bad pacing, bad directing and bad writing and many mand more issues.
So a lot of people harp on them not playing the games; it was later explained, like all good creators do, well after the fact that they went to number place and got an intense lore dive…on an IP that exists primarily as a video game series. Now, I’m not defending them in the slightest as the IP is a video game franchise first which means the best form of lore dive is to I don’t know play a game from said franchise? That’s equivalent to writing an HP book from the PS1 Sorcerer’s Stone game, it’s just not going to work. But their Ace in the Hole when it game to criticism or critique; it’s the Silver timeline. Great, if it wasn’t easy to differentiate good Halo from bad, now it is. Prime Halo (Bungie’s 1,2,3,ODST,Reach): good. Silver/343 Halo: bad.
Not saying it would have saved the show, it's still not amazing, but it would have been better if the main character wasn't Master Chief. A new completely different spartan with little to no expectations on them and known history. You could still have Master Chief pop up in the show and be the actual Master Chief.
A year later and I think you should revisit paramount and watch 1883. This is from a person who has not watched Yellowstone after three episodes. Stands alone and imo very good show
If they would of at least read fall of reach this would be a way better show. Not only a letdown for fans but also their profits. What’s not interesting with the original Halo story? They could of show Chief easily by just showing the start up leading to the present. IMAGINE the ODST scene from reach acted out. My God they dropped the ball.
This show suffers from a fundamental misunderstanding of how the tech works, the relationship between John and Cortana, who the Covenant are and their dogma, and the the bizarre choice of making the UNC extremely antagonistic. As well as a completely unlikable secondary character of Kwan.
Paramount's Halo: Were going to make a Halo show for people that hate Halo or have never played it. It'll definitely be a success with the fanbase! Amazon LotR Ring of Power: Hold my lembas bread, homie.
its clear that studios are basically greenlighting original ideas under the guise of established ips. this and resident evil have nothing to do with the ip’s and could be better enjoyed(maybe) if not associated but then who would watch it? this isnt halo..its jupiter descending of the galaxy vol 1 or sumn
This is the first time I get to hear what happens in the series as a whole.... I almost started crying out of despair. Not only do they diverge from the og story, they do keep the really shitty part from Halo 5 about Halsey being a war criminal, and already introduces that in season 1? The whole point why they didn't prosecute her before Halo 5 was because during the time of War with an superior force, they did everything to gain any advantage and any favor from her that they could. You don't do that in the early stages. All this does is to further undermine the threat of the covenant. Fml.... 🤦🤦🤦🤦
As a fan of the game i hated this show so much. I can't believe they had the audacity to call it Halo and then not even feature a Halo (aside from the vision and teases) I was expecting the show to take place on one since they're the main driving point of the games. Really didn't like Kwan and her rebel storylines, I'm sure if they were cut out and replaced with UNSC action the show would've been much better. And with her being absent from the last 2 episodes she really felt pointless to me. Didn't like the human girl working for the Covenant, makes me wonder if this was to save money by having human antagonists so they can feature less CGI aliens. Didnt like Chief constantly taking his helmet, but especially not in the first dang episode, like if you're going to do that either only show the back of his head, or build some mystery around Chief first and have the face reveal come much later in the story. I wonder if the actor pushed to show his face more on camera? Or was it a producers choice? So weird seeing Chief in civilian clothes too. Also, the dude that played Captain Keyes would've been so much better as Sgt. Johnson! I don't understand why producers change shows and movies from the source material without any justification when the source material works perfectly fine. Why make this a "Silver Timeline" when a live-action version of Halo Combat Evolved would've worked perfectly fine for TV, each episode of a 10-episode season would be one mission from the game. Too much action perhaps?

They wanted to make a Witcher or a Sonic while using nothing from the games or any other media and ended up assassinating the un killable covenant demon that took down 3 odst's as a child.
As a gamer who has loved and detested some of the franchise. I had excitement as a fan, but it grew to disappointment.
Even casual gamers will tell you that Halo Wars and 3 had better pictures quality than this show.
I've been curious about what happened on this show. So having it explained to me here, I believe, is the best way to find out.
1:22 Thank you for mentioning this
As a fan of Halo this is something that really bothered me, even trying to view the show as it's own thing
And this isn't even just with Chief either, but the show as a whole
"No no, we're our own thing, we can do whatever we like! But we're not going to explain fundamental aspects of the universe, and we're going to have a huge twist in episode 1 with 0 emotional weight behind it"
It's genuinely just a shame that the show feels like they *tried* to change as many aspects as they could
There's a couple small aspects you got slightly wrong (unless they're all references to other stuff), but nothing that really matters (not that the showrunners would notice lmao)
Agree with most of what you said through most of this though, good stuff, main thing I disagree with is at the end where you said he's "Just John".
From the perspective of a standalone thing (which I guess it's supposed to be), sure, he's "just John".
But compared to canon Halo material, he doesn't act like John or Chief. The joke name Jimmy Rings somehow feels more accurate
Cringe
@@reddishcarp1237 Thanks for the insight
@@reddishcarp1237 no way you’re actually defending this show 😂
@@chasepeterson8789 He is.
I'm just glad to see the author of My Immortal still writing fanfics, even though she switched franchise
You could have done a Band of Brothers type show with the Marines in Harvest, Reach, or even during the battle of Earth. But no, we got… this.
I feel bad for Pablo dudes an awsome actor seems like a super cool guy and he did the most with the shit he was given hope no one hates him for the show
Thank you, now I don't have to watch it, you're a lifesaver.
Wait, “the Spartans are named after Thors hammer.” Mjolnir-??? OR the warriors of the ancient Greek city-state known as Sparta.
Bless you cause I don't understand it at all what happened so thanks for explaining it.
Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. It saves me from hours of torture. Love your channel
Poor Pablo, he is a good actor and to see him have to back this junk up is depressing. I hope this doesn't tank his career
Anyone else notice when Soren first gets his trenchcoat it's missing a sleeve to showcase his messed up arm but when he puts it on again it has both sleeves. Also that was mackis brother? I'm pretty sure they were going to kiss when they were reading that book. Idk it's a blur.
“it did feel like in order to tell a human story about a soldier exploring his identity, about the effects of war on society and the effects of war on the individual, in order to tell the story of that over a long form you really needed to get under the helm”
…that is not the story of Halo👀
the whole point of hiding a character's face behind a mask is so the viewer can interpret the character's emotions based their own reactions, which allows the viewer to actively participate in the story.
Castlevania will be the only adaptation of a video game I will like
Arcane is also superb, it and Castlevania are unquestionably the best video game adaptations
Funny how keeping faithful to the successful source material breaks the video game adaptation curse…
3:42
I'm inconsolable, it's way more hilarious than I could have ever imagined.
I've never watched it but it looks like a series of episodes.
I just find it sacrilegious that they showed Master Chiefs face. That should definitely be illegal.
It isn't that they showed his face per se, I do feel like it could have been done eventually; it's that they did it Episode 1 with absolutely 0 build-up or character development, as if they expected all of that to carry over from the games despite repeatedly telling the audience it was a completely different timeline and not the halo we knew.
So what I’m seeing is that cortana when she takes over master chief she becomes more master chief than the master chief in the series
LME: "They hate UA-cam more than Red hates Blue."
Me: "I understood that reference."
The games and graphic novels had plenty to work with and we got this....
I wanted the show to be better. My main gripe is I just wish it wasn't so forgetable. I legit had forgotten I watched this.
9:55
Omg the size difference and smirk make it feel like a romantic scene too lmao I cannot
You absolutely nailed it. One of your best 🤙🏻
So first Resident Evil and how this? Great. This is great.
5:52 Da fookin' leyend of Gin Alley
This show started so good and then it went no where and got so bad at the end
Didn’t play halo but stuff like this makes me fear what a borderlands movie will probably be
Oh god i forgot that might be a thing. As a halo fan i hope your adaptation is better
Hopefully it’s on some mad max shit, all they need is a director that cares about gaming, give it time n some kid will do it eventually
This received the the World War Z book to movie treatment. It had a few characters with the same names but they act nothing like those they are based off, it has similar environment since the games and show had alien's in them and it has the same name. its honestly a slap in the face to fans of the series and to the series itself.
I've never played the halo series. But I understand what it feels when they ruin a game franchises with live action adaptation. #uncharted
#residentevil
Your review is right on. Everything was just okay with a lot of inconsistencies. They really need to get some new writers.
12:40 "whatever the microsoft one is called" 😂😭
you couldn't even give them that
@9:15 ... say "Cortana help him *bing his past"
Did y'all see the Halo Movie: Forward Unto Dawn? I really enjoyed this adaption of Halo
I did. It was good for what it was, but you could really tell that the low budget was holding it back.
I like that they actually f*cked themselves from any hope of being remotely game accurate by drilling Cortana into his f*cking skull instead of the USB Z port at the back of his head and helmet.
Master Cheeks.
"They disabled him like Paramount disable comments." 😂🤣
Boy oh boy am i glad i didn't get hyped for this. I might have had exploded ever so slightly more when John Halo drew his Metal Gear Solid Snake.
Long awaited, at least for me
0:40 lol I LOVE that you have WOW
fun fact:
the microsofts version of siri is called
cortana!
@@reverseBLT same here so if you do end up finding something that says it’s inaccurate let me know I hate the spread of false information so I try to make sure things are correct
well good to know I guess thanks for the work you put it
It had it's highs and a HELL OF A LOT OF LOWS
My issue with halo, it was so bad it hurt, reach was glassed before master chief was let loose, they are artificially changed to have no emotion, not by chipping, if you’re going to make a show based off an IP, learn the IP…. This would’ve been good without the halo attachment but with just made no sense and made it way worse
Wym? He was around and fighting fools for 20 years before reach happened?
Cringe
Red vs Blue >>> Halo: the Series
Um... 12:42 windows 10 has cortana. Which explains so much. If that was the point and i missed the joke its really late and i'm sick. Forgive me. Hope everyone is doing well !
This series has more human villains than actual covenants, I cannot believe they're still making a season 2 after everyone disliked it.
Elvis the Alien did a video on this YESTERDAY with alot more detail....
I can't blame Pablo. His defense for the show on twitter I can blame him for.
Pablo was right, you people are really insecure.
What does that even mean, you want him to shit on the show he currently works on ?
Average delusional gamer lol
omg I forgot this show already
That red vs blue reference was smooth
I watched a bit of this show and it had me in the first half but when chef took off the helmet I was out
It’s also one of the problems is that pissed off gamers was the new direction is so similar to the old direction it kind of feels like it someone asked to cheat off your test and you get a solid B+ or can they get a C minus and you just look at them gone bro how? Even when you cheat you fuck it up
Keep in mind that Paramount+ has greenlit a season 2 for this series
Really….darn I was hoping for a cancellation of the series.
Because it's good
I slowly watched Halo and never finished it.
Honestly, I LOVED Star Trek Strange New Worlds on Paramount+ and it made me not care about Halo...
I feel like I heard you say “halsey” so many Times that I started feeling like it wasn’t a real word.
That mando fade 💯💯💯💯💯
John didn't talk at the end because he was dead. Cortana was controlling his body and suit
I loved the red vs. blue joke
When he took of the helmet the first time I was like hmm ok they just wanna show his face once....then he kept taking it off and I was like wtf
The intro alone was worth the thumbs up lol
I hate any show that uses modern guns with a bunch of sci-fi bs on it to represent future weapons. Especially when the source material has plenty of original props that aren’t hard to replicate.
It's honestly like they saw chiefs suit said "that's cool let's do that" and that's the extent of their research
I hate how they try and black ball my guy LET ME EXPLAIN BUT I SEE MY GUY still going strong
Can't wait to hear how you'll explain this one haha
That homelander joke about made me choke on my coffee. Well played.
Man never take off master chief helmet 😂
It’s a tv drama with a halo skin, kinda like how halo infinite is a live service game without the live service
Oh no
So a lot of people harp on them not playing the games; it was later explained, like all good creators do, well after the fact that they went to number place and got an intense lore dive…on an IP that exists primarily as a video game series.
Have you seen Halo? It's a gritty take on the Red vs Blue series from RoosterTeeth
Not saying it would have saved the show, it's still not amazing, but it would have been better if the main character wasn't Master Chief. A new completely different spartan with little to no expectations on them and known history. You could still have Master Chief pop up in the show and be the actual Master Chief.
Halo, the show where every creative decision that veers off course of the source material seems to lower the quality of the end product.
1:20... Uh. Why is Master Chief showing his face? 😂
"Halo TV Show Won't Please Everyone, And That's The Point," - Producer
This is the first time I get to hear what happens in the series as a whole....
I almost started crying out of despair. Not only do they diverge from the og story, they do keep the really shitty part from Halo 5 about Halsey being a war criminal, and already introduces that in season 1?
The whole point why they didn't prosecute her before Halo 5 was because during the time of War with an superior force, they did everything to gain any advantage and any favor from her that they could. You don't do that in the early stages. All this does is to further undermine the threat of the covenant.
Fml.... 🤦🤦🤦🤦
15:45 Lmao!!
I liked the adaptation. But I wish we would’ve gotten a true to halo adaptation before we got this else world story.
Master Cheeks
whats that calendar shown in the beginning of the vid it looks interesting
It’s such a shame too , Halo coulda been a blockbuster franchise on par with Star Wars
