    Wow, this is the World Record? I used to play this game around 1987 and 1988. I know at the time I topped 1.2 million points a few times, but it never occurred to me that I actually might have been World Record level. There was no one I knew that could beat me regularly, only one other guy that would beat me from time to time. This blows me away to think I could have had a world-best score and had no idea, we didn't even think about filming a game back then. I haven't played in probably 15 years now. At age 47 I seriously doubt I could play like this anymore but I want to give it a try now. Seriously, wow.

      Nice ! So you knew the scoring tricks presented here in 1988?

    • @FloydMaxwell
      @FloydMaxwell 7 років тому +1

      As did I back then. My best was 1.3M. As to tricks, or lack of them, the guy playing here was amazingly bad at shooting the Doh at the end. Should be able to make 14 hits -- 14,000 -- per man and there were plenty of times where he gets just 3 or 5 hits. And on his last man he almost didn't complete the game...check it out again.

    • @TheGalagaKing
      @TheGalagaKing 5 років тому

      Nothing like responding to a 4 year old comment. Lol. 1.3M is a very respectable score and to average around 1.2M per game is even more impressive. Before I had any real association with twingalaxies back in the 80's, I had set a score back in '86 of 1,450,230. It wasn't until late '99 when I beat my own record with a score of 1,466,460 at Boomers in Boca Raton, Fl, which landed me an interview with the Boca Raton News (www.twingalaxies.com/content.php/732-Video-game-world-record-set-at-Boomers-in-Boca-Raton-Florida-Score-slated-for-Video-Game-and-Pinball-Book-of-Records). Walter Day recognized and inputted my score into his database but after new ownership took place and Walter sold TG, my score somehow disappeared from the database and my Arkanoid Tournament Edition high score took its place. In any event Floyd, I really think you should come out of retirement and give it a shot again. I'd like to see a bunch of great players like you and a few others work on improving their scores and give my good friend Zack Hample a run for his money (the current wr holder). Lol :)

  • @giovanni_7191
    @giovanni_7191 2 роки тому +2

    I had a personal best of 1,204,000 and few other guys in the game room I played had >1,2M as well. World record is an overstatement, especially since you lost more than 10 times. I used to run it without loss or maybe 1 (that would be most possibly in stage 25, which I consider the hardest of all! :) )
    In the final boss stage you hit it 14 times, whilst you can hit it 1 more before you bust. So in this game you lost ~40,000 (counting the extra life you would get by +30K).
    I see 2 differences between this game and the cabinet: the pills you get are averagely better, too many lives and purple ones. But I have to say that the random moving enemies are more aggressive here, that is, they go down the screen rather early.
    I tried to play this at mame but it's very hard to play with the keys instead of the wheel of the cabinet. I never had a playstation or sthg so I don't know if the gameplay is better there.
    Thanks for the memories anyway.

      You give up the chance of getting pods while playing more than 1 ball. On some levels this is a very sub-optimal strategy.

      @TheGalagaKing 5 років тому

      Yes. The next game in the line-up was Arkanoid Tournament Ed. which was exactly the same as the first version, but with different board layouts. Still 32 stages and all the same power capsules s well as the boss on stage 33. The next one after this one was Arkanoid Revenge of Doh. A revised Arkanoid with new power capsules to add to the original lineup and the ability to exit the stage after completion via the left side or right side. The last installment in the series was called Arkanoid Returns and was totally revamped compared to the first 3 versions. Scoring was a lot lower in this version and it way much harder than that of the first 3.

    At the end, he is getting a thousand points per hit on the guy, so he is point scoring for the record... good tactic there, he is killing each man before the Knight starts flashing and the game ends. I have beaten this game on a few occasions, I have the arcade cab, but never thought to go for a world record, looks like a lot of guys can beat it, so it is down to max points for the record. This is why he doesn`t use the lazer much, as it kills colored blocks off that give him big points for more pills to come down.

      To "cash in" each extra paddle for 1k a shot to the boss. 15 hits (15k worth) is the most you can get before finishing the game. That's why players miss the ball on the 16th shot to avoid finishing the game so that they can try again with their next man and earn more points for each hit to the boss.

    The game ALLOWING the player to purposely die to gain points at the end is asinine. The player's ability to exploit it at a high level is NOT asinine. Just wanted to make that clear.
    I completely and totally understand accumulating points during the actual rounds, but there you're not intentionally sacrificing lives to rack up points.
    Don't get me wrong, it's one of my favorite games and one of the two or three that was/still am can play at the highest level (I'm middle-aged now and have hardly played in 30+ years), but I always thought the ending of this game was really idiotic. I started Atari Breakout and Super Breakout when they first came out, so this game was in my wheelhouse.

    • @TheGalagaKing
      @TheGalagaKing 5 років тому

      Between my friend Zack Hample (current wr holder) and myself (currently 2nd), I believe the highest score for completing the game without "cashing in" any of your extra paddles for 15k a pop is around 1.1M. Still a very impressing score nonetheless. Not too many players can get on an average day. Your point most definitely has merit, however, I tend to look at it as the game awards you 1k for each shot to the boss for as long as it takes for you to beat it, as opposed to the game lets say giving you one lump sum of 16k for beating it, but nothing for hitting it incrementally 16 times. So lets say it took you 10 men to beat the boss but each man you hit it 13, 14, or 15 times but then accidentally died, that would be a lot of work without any reward for making an effort in the interim. At least the way it is now, during those 10 men played, you would be "compensated" if you will for trying to beat the boss even though it may have taken you 10 men to do it. If that makes any sense. :)

      He wasn't intending to finish the game quickly, but to get the highest score as possible.
      To kill the final boss, it requires 15 hits, and each hit scores 1000 points. Furthermore, if you die during the fight, you have to start it all over, so it gives a possibility of 14 hits and an extra score of 14 000 points per remaining life, except for the last one with 15 hits and 15 000 points. You can be sure the player was aware of that, and was counting every hit he made before killing himself.
      If you kill the boss quickly, the game is over, and you can't score points anymore, so spending all remaining lives in fighting the boss and register as many hits as possible without killing it is a good strategy if you want to achieve the best score possible.
      He actually spent 24 lives in fighting the boss, including the 5 extra lives won in the process, from 960 000 to 1 200 000 points, since the rate for gaining extra lives is every 60 000 points at that point of the game, and the last one was won at 900 000 points.
      In the best case, he would had made 14 hits during 23 fights, and 15 hits in the last one, for a possibility of :
      (23 X 14 000) + (1 X 15 000) = 337 000 points (337 hits),
      which is quite significant. As his score was 920 680 when he reached the boss' stage, he had a possibility to reach a score of 1 257 680, with no possibility of gaining any other extra life, since the next one would had been at 1 280 000.
      He didn't succeed to make all the 14 hits every time; the game ended with 1 236 680 points, with a gain of 316 000 points, which is 21 000 points less than the maximum possible; this means that he only missed 21 hits out of 337.
      If he had killed the boss at the first try, which wouldn't had been a problem for a skillful player like him, the extra points gain would had been only of 15 000 points, for a final score of only 935 970.
      For an average player of any video game, the main strategy is to play safe and save as many lives as possible to progress in the game. For an experienced player, sacrificing lives is often a good strategy in high-scoring and even speedrunning games.

      +DaringDramis doesn't the ships spawn infinitely? as they give 100 points you could theoretically get an infinity of points.

      You're right, it's theoretically possible, but actually won't likely to happen.
      Sometimes, the ball could get stuck in an infinite loop, whatever where you hit the ball in the field, or whatever how wide the angle goes when the ball hits the paddle, and then you may not be able to hit the last brick and finish the level.
      That's happens sometimes in older games of the same kind, like Breakout or Super Breakout; as there's no other obstacles but bricks and walls, so you are eventually forced to drop the ball intentionally. In these games, as the ball is served to you in a random direction when beginning a new turn, unlike Arkanoid where you can aim the ball where you want, you just can hope for the RNG to be on your side.
      In Arkanoid, these ships going erratically all around the playfield weren't implemented only to troll yourself, but to deviate the ball's direction and prevent it to get stuck in an infinite loop, and eventually it will find its way to that last brick that you wouldn't be able to blast otherwise. The developpers learned from older games, I guess.
      The player can intentionally try to hit these ships and get more points, but it usually last not much long.
