- This is a freeware game. It was released in 1996. The latest version is 1.09 (1998). The game is based on the Commodore Amiga classic Megaball (1991) by Ed and Al Mackey. It can be traced back to games such as Pong (1972), Breakout (1976) and Arkanoid (1986). I did not use any cheats or save states.
Apparently, this version has a high score bug, when you actually complete the game. A solution would be to leave one brick up at board 50 and then commit suicide, in order to achieve and save the highest possible score in your personal high score list.
FireBall and Thru Brick are both very powerful power-ups. When you have both, the game will not only be easy; you will also score more points compared to the combo of Shooting Paddle and Thru Brick. At this point, you can grab Falling Bricks for easier aiming and Fast Ball for higher point count per brick.
Super Shrink and Shrink Paddle (can easily be confused with Expand Paddle) should be avoided at all times. You should expand your paddle once but not twice. Using Expand Paddle more than once is dangerous, because it increases the likelihood that you, reluctantly, will be grabbing a Kill Paddle. If you are hit by Super Shrink or too many Shrink Paddle, it will almost certainly lead to losing a paddle, unless you get lucky (luck requires skill in this case).
Multiply Exploding always seems to come too late, when appropriate; or maybe I simply grabbed one of the plentiful Set-Off Exploding "power-up"s too early.
Extra Life is obviously the best and most important power-up, if you are trying to complete the game. You should always try to catch any Extra Life, even if there's a high risk of losing your current life. If the Extra Life and the DX-Ball go down at exactly the same time, you should go for the DX-Ball, because losing a life also means the loss of your current power-ups. Sometimes, this can be difficult to estimate, because the power-ups and the DX-Ball often travel at different speeds and angles. The most legitimate way of completing the game, however, would be a game in which you do not lose any lives at all; or a game in which you manage to complete it with your initial 3 lives.
Split Ball can be used at your own risk but be warned; it requires multitasking. My conclusion after this, is that singletasking is more accurate and reliable when it comes to aiming, unless you consider multitasking a proces of switching between single tasks at the appropriate time and then use singletasking.
Level Warp can be used at the expense of the value of the remaining bricks. I don't use it, because it can sometimes ruin my focus and rhythm; when I enter an even more difficult board having no power-ups. There is no easy way to do this. You might as well destroy all the bricks, unless you are in a very dangerous situation (Fast Ball + Super Shrink + Falling Bricks.without Thru Brick, Grab Paddle, FireBall or Shooting Paddle).
Board 45 was tricky due to all the invisible bricks which obviously make the DX-Ball bounce back down at an unexpected time and angle. An early Zap Bricks or Thru Brick will immidiately counter these hidden traps.
Shrink Ball would be interesting when you need to aim at narrow openings that your normal DX-Ball has trouble entering unless you hit the opening almost perpendicularly. This would be in the case of a board with bricks surrounded by indestructible bricks; except an opening at one the sides with a height of 1 brick.
Grab Paddle is nice to have, because it allows you to have a ball that travels at maximum speed (max. point per brick) and, at the same time, to be able to slow down or change position at will; in order to aim more efficiently.

remember when the Level took too long and there was only one brick left? After some time, an electronic sound was increasing and the last brick finally got struck by a lightning.

Yes I remember it did that a few times when I played this game and I almost finished it except for a few bricks and suddenly they were struck by lighting.

The sound design for this game is incredible. The different sounds each block makes perfectly match their appearance, idk how else to explain it lmao. Like, the sound that plays whenever the ball hits those unbreakable yellow bricks just makes so much sense that it sounds that way haha. It's so satisfying.
shame the music is played here on the crappy Microsoft Roland software wavetable. Sounds way better in OPL3 FM.

Just had a 231650, and yeah it takes a lot of patience singling out every brick and being careful with powerups.
Playing with the fastest ball is the way to go.

@@amnesiaPUZZLES Once you're comfortable playing the game it becomes easy. Fastest ball + Expand paddle makes it pretty easy and most profitable (with magnet it's even better obviously). Second to last level is the one you can get most points for instance, just go for pure fastball and you can easily make 15k+. Also never zap grey bricks and don't collect thru and comet balls as you get significantly less points. Same goes for dynamite and multiply exploding power ups, don't pick em up when there are exploding bricks in the level. The more you play the better you get at detecting those nuances. Now download the game and beat your dad. 😂
I was born in 2003. But this game, along with many other games, for example, Zuma, Need for Speed II, Virtua Cop, was my childhood. I was crazy for these games. And now at 18, I am weeping like a kid seeing these playthroughs. Thank you so much for the nostalgia trip.

Sadly, that guy's reply isn't there so let me tell you the differences. The differences could be according to the number of levels, bugs, soundtracks and others. Needs more testing but I hope that helps. Also, the score bug means that if you beat the game, you're supposed to be taken to the high score leaderboard and then the main menu but the bug disallows it so it takes you to the menu instead. At least, it displays the last score. No idea why it didn't get patched but oh well.

*Tips to get higher scores:*
- Pick up every powerup possible, with a few exceptions:
* Don't pick up the dynamite unless all your explosives are gone already.
* Don't pick up level-skipping powerup's.
* Don't pick up the cometball powerup. This breaks multiple blocks at once, but gives much less points!
- Try and blow up explosives as late in the level as possible because breaking blocks individually gives much more points!
- When reaching the last few levels, get rid of all your extra lives, because dying gives you points!

Did you know? On Super DX-Ball, the sound from the power-up emerging from any brick is also the sound of the ball hitting the explosive brick and if the ball touches an indestructible brick, the sound from the hard brick is heard instead. The falling brick sound is also the sound for the Expand Paddle and Mega Ball power-ups the paddle catches.

It's a "glitch" because the ball is split in two while over the pad, so it is virtually at the same position and speed. Thus, it doesn't actually split. If he have let the ball go then grab the split ball power-up I think it have worked
@@ruffusgoodman4137 but even if there are two balls at the same position, i dont think they can hit the same brick at the same time... i mean they might have to split when one hits a brick and the other keeps its way...
@@ymj5161 I don't think so, I think the glitch extends to deciding whether a ball hit the brick or not. Later on the run he gets the same power-up but the balls get different speed and the game could decide which one hit the brick.

All the sounds where in open soundfiles. I replaced them all with mimiced sound in my mic. Big improvement!

Does anyone remember a brickbreak game from the same era where you don't use a paddle but simply control a ball with a smily face on it? You would only be able to break the blocks which were the same color as your guy at the time - and you had to avoid black/red warp(death) tiles?? You started off with a blue smile face ball.

I played this game all the time when I was a kid. I never realized until today how close I came to beating the game several times. I don't have the time to watch the entire video, but did you have any stuck balls? The cactus level was notorious for getting my ball stuck.

This game is nostalgia, I’m happy to know about this game, and I remember when I was below 14 years old, I could never manage to reach the final level, until a classmate at my school then managed to reach the final level, at 1:27:30, when we had this game on our class computers back then, and could play it during the breaks.
Anyway, boy do I remember when there was only one brick left and it took to long to break it, and then an electric sound appeared, first very quietly, but more and more loudly, and then a lightning struck the final brick. I have to say that is the best thing with this breakout game. I’d love to have an MP3 file, that plays that electric sound from this game, without any other sound effects, first as quietly as possible, and slowly but surely louder and louder, and it ends with a lightning sound. Then I could play horror movie with myself at home in my apartment, turn that MP3 file on, and ask myself
”Huh? What’s that electric sound?”
”What’s going on? Is an electric disaster about to happen to my apartment?”
And so I get more and more scared, and especially in the end, at the lightning sound.
Can I get that electric sound as an MP3 file somewhere? If so, thank you so much for letting me know. You have made my day. 😊

This game make me feel sad. There is many nice looking boards. After you finish that game,, you have many points on last board, but other boards are empty and black. Real end of that game is second board - there is heart, and hearts shouldn' t be erased.

I've never finished all 50 levels, unfortunately. =( I could get to 48 or 49 once or twice, but then died in sight of the finish line.
I do know how to get even more points though - speed up your ball, it gives you more points, and don't just shoot them all away! :)

I didnt reach often last stage because i always searched for the highest possible points. Which means no slow down or as less as possible to increase the point count. The faster the ball the higher the points. I endend up with 250 300k points with only half of the levels, 700k+ when i done it completely
