When to Hunt Whitetails In The Morning

  • While hunting whitetails in the morning hours has produced 75% of my top 25 bucks, the amount of time that I actually hunt during the morning hours accounts for less than 25% of all my sits. Shooting a mature buck in the morning is probably your best bet, but there is certainly an appropriate time and place.

    I always prepare for the all day sit in the stand during the rut. Over the years I have taken bucks at first light, late morning, noon, early and late afternoon. The deer are so unpredictable during the rut. I like to be in the tree at least an hour before sunrise and get all settled then sit in the dark and not make a sound and I will sit there until dark if needed. I just feel like I'm ruining my own hunt if I get out of the stand prematurely just because you never know what it just around the corner and may be heading your way. One example is one time I was getting out my stand around 1pm, I had just lowered my bow to the ground and boom I had deer coming in "and my bow was on the ground"! Ever since then I pack for the all day sit.

    I hunt Wisconsin and do like the evening sits alot more during early season and the October lull like you mentioned. But I will sit some mornings to pick off a Doe or 2 early. And with our coyote problem here I seem to arrow more of those in the morning than evening. Love all the informative subjects you cover.. Good luck on this 2018 season..

      Thanks for the comments and great points! I like to take a chance on a morning hunt here and there too. I think I will hunt Monday morning depending on the rain. I have a new stand that is near bedding areas, East wind and I have had a lot of morning mature buck movement this time of the season. To me...nothing like a morning sit and even tho it may not be the best this time of year, I do look for the opportunity! Good luck to you too and thanks for the comments!

    Jeff I've been watching some of your videos and I have to say they are some of the most informative I have found and I really enjoy them. I have never hunted whitetails and this year will be the first. I was very apprehensive but the information you provide has boosted my confidence and I'm chomping at the bit to get out and hunt. In one of your videos you talk about hunting the back end of weather extremes and I wanted to know if your activity prediction strategy will work out west? Thanks for a great channel. I appreciate that Tyler! We always have hunts within the videos...but under a strategy of some kind. Unfortunately nearly all of the channels that focus too much on hunts are dead or dying. People want more...BUT we definitely will bring you more this Fall. Just so many other priorities...also this channel is already growing at a rate that places it in the top 2 or 3 in the hunting industry so we have to stick partially to what we have been doing. I appreciate the suggestion tho and we will definitely bring you more 👍
      I also may add my favorite hunts to a hunting playlist so you can find them more easily. For now tho...this is one of my favorites!

      Richard Hicks I hear ya! I actually was very close to trying to shoot one of them, but didn't want to mess up the rut stand for does. This is a high pressure location...but the 50 acres is very low pressure. With good food and improved cover it is amazing how many deer get sucked into a small parcel during the daylight hours. They were probably moving fast because of the neighbor's, lol.

      Richard Hicks man I can I imagine! I grew up an hour from Detroit and hunted the first 10 years in that area...different state game areas, 10 acre backyard locations. There, getting to find a great spot to hunt meant maybe getting permission to access thru someone's yard to get to public land where others couldn't go.

      ELN calls ha...I know what you mean, hunted MI from 86-2013. Lived there for 42 years. But, same pressure here. The key is I hunt my stands on average twice per season. That was actually the first sit in this stand, ever. They just don't have a clue and I could get away with a whole lot in MI the same, by hunting my unpressured stands on public and private lands. I all boils down to how pressured your stands are....it really works, even in MI 🙂

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  6 років тому +1

      Mason Hall It helps greatly that I only use my stands 1-3 times each per year...some not at all. The deer just don't have any idea I am hunting the land...at least from seeing me in a tree. Of course I rarely hunt food sources where they linger and look around. Typically just deer passing by. We stayed in the tree another 20 minutes, really thought it was time to get down an had pulled the mask off...

    What is your take on slightly larger tracts of land? A lot of discussion is done on the 40-50 acre tracts maybe 80 and pressuring the deer. I have 160 acres in the Mid Michigan area and wonder if I can spread the pressure out over the 160 acres. I am the only one hunting this as well. So I would think i could hunt more often but spread it around a bit. Thoughts?

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  6 років тому +1

      Miranda Place you definitely can get away with a LOT more, if the habitat and hunting design is just a much larger version of what you maybe on a smaller parcel. I have seen some 20 acre parcels that seem a lot larger than some 160s. Hope that makes sense! You want to make your 160 seem like 400, with many layers of habitat change, lengthy food sources and travel corridors, a many bedding are, concentrated to support the movement. Also screening cuttings and plantings for hunter access and to separate the deer herd...

    What ladder brand is that for your hang on setups?

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  6 років тому +1

      Sitka Gear Fanatic that is one of the only USA made ladders, with USA steel, in the country: www.familytraditiontreestands.com. They have most likely, the best stands and ladders on the market...quietest, safest, strongest. Rubber coated chains to hold the platform up, T screw and two 800# ratchet straps to hold the stand in place, welded on footrest and a 14x20 huge seat. Not for portable use on public land so much, but highly recommended for hang-on situations on private, where you expect a stand to last for decades of use, not a few years of use. Try Jack at 517-543-3926 and he can let you know where a dealer is located near you...hope that helps!

    Insert “blah blah blah blah blah” is what to do. Then come hunt in difficult conditions and you wouldn’t know what to do to kill a 3 1/2 year old deer much less an older mature deer. Why don’t all you yo-yos start your videos with “I hunt in parts of the country where a five year old could kill a mature buck. As a matter of fact I have a 13 year old that would decimate every buck you have older than 3 1-2 in 10 days. Why? Because he hunts the thickest woods, most pressured deer, and would never think of talking to a freaking camera during a hunt.
