Link to Philip Ball's new book: "How to grow a human": t.ly/Qm4d
How low in complexity can you go and still have free will. Does a bacteria have free will? Do single cells have it? What do we know about agency in living systems? I collaborated with physicist and author Philip Ball, a former editor at the prestigious journal Nature. who has written extensively on this and other subjects.
What’s the difference between a living thing and one that’s not alive? Scientists don't agree. But we can say living organisms do things to suit themselves. They rearrange their surroundings for their own purposes.
Even single living cells act with agendas. Macrophages in your immune system chase a bacterium across the slide, switching course as its prey tries to escape, before finally gobbling it up.
But is this an anthropomorphic way of describing a biological process. Single cells don’t have minds of their own - so can they really have goals?
Biologists often insist that cells and bacteria aren’t trying to do anything. it all comes down to genes, chemistry and physics - no aim or design, but which fool our narrative-obsessed minds.
This is "agency" - the ability of living things to alter their environment (and themselves) with purpose, and an agenda. It might help us to understand what “free will” means. Agency supplies what genetic hard-wiring cannot. It’s not feasible to program complex living organisms for every situation they might encounter. For example, the hare is trying to escape from a wolf by being unpredictable. An organism that reacts differently in identical situations stands a better chance of outwitting predators.
The choices we humans make might be carefully deliberated: we contemplate the imagined future scenarios if we do this or that, involving our internal mental models of how the world works and of our position within it. This is what we experience as free will. But this is far from free because of the influence of memories, emotions, social conditioning, and physics.
Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell imagined a very simple scheme for how an agent could achieve a different outcome from the one the world would otherwise produce spontaneously. He imagined an ingenious demon that operates a door to sift “hot” from “cold” particles in a gas confined within a box.
The second law says this segregation of hot and cold should never happen of its own accord. But the demon does this by agency - gathering and acting information. But any real memory will eventually fill up - so the memory has to be wiped every to make room for new information. That erasure produces entropy. So all the entropy lost by separating hot from cold is recouped by clearing the demon’s memory.
Complex-systems theorist Stuart Kauffman and philosopher Philip Clayton, say we need a theory of organization. That doesn’t really exist yet.
In 2012 Susanne Still of the University of Hawaii, working with Gavin Crooks of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California and others, showed that any entity with a goal - like a cell, an animal, or even a tiny demon - needs to have a memory if it is to work efficiently without wasting energy. They found that energy efficiency depends on an ability to focus only on the information that is most useful. Efficient agents are discerning ones.
You don’t necessarily need a big brain to do it, but just the right rules. Sometimes Maxwell’s demon can work best by taking a gamble on when to open and close the trapdoor, rather than responding to every individual molecule.
    #freewill
    #agency
If we want to explain why a volcanic rock is at a particular location, we can tell a causal story in terms of simple mechanics, devoid of any goal. But if we want to explain why a bird’s nest is in a particular location, the explanation can’t be complete without invoking the bird’s purpose in building the nest. Agents are real causes of things that happen in the universe.

What the Ball guy says at the very beginning makes me think about something I've wondered about since I was a little kid - something like, at what point did the living and non-living separate? How and when did life first happen? Or were they always separate? This video is super interesting - more things I've wondered about but couldn't really find the right words for it. And damn, if all or most of our cells have "agency", that might go a long way in explaining consciousness - maybe our consciousness is made of billions of little pieces or something...

The video of the macrophage consuming the pathogen was amazing to me. I had always assumed that process was akin to a poison that only specific pathogens were susceptible to. Now I see a macrophage chasing a pathogens and consuming it. The only model I know regarding intelligent entities is Input Process Output (IPO). In this case the macrophage detects the pathogen, somehow? Chases it down (that requires some amount of processing to triangulate). Catches and eats it - which doesn't require any sort of processing. The detection and chasing does require some sort of processing and its not a small amount of processing required to perform those tasks with modern technology.

Thank you for your work. I learned from a wise teacher that free will is not about making a choice with the goal of optimally satisfying the instinct or ego (even if this choice involves complex intellectual analysis). Free will is actually about making a choice to follow truth to the detriment of instinctual/ egoistic satisfaction. Only humans are capable of this, as animals are purely instinct driven. A pure free will decision however, is rare for most humans.
To give an example, a person has an emotion of greed, and is presented with the opportunity to steal, completely get away with it, plus society would ridicule him if it was found out that didn't take this opportunity (so no ego motivation). And he decides not to steal based on the abstract recognition that all humans have equal inalienable rights. This is a free will decision. On the other hand, a decision to not steal because of one's self image, fear of getting caught, etc. is instinctually motivated, where the stronger instinct wins out.

So... do things have free will?
I understand that living things have agency. But if their (our?) collection of potential responses upon certain stimuli is limited by DNA / memories / perception etc., then it doesn't sound like free, but rather predetermined, therefore, theoretically calculable.
Then quantum physics enters the chat and shows us the random nature of reality, opening the route to the possibility of free will, via erasing the predeterministic model.
Or does it? Because a random choice doesn't sound like free, but only non-determined.
Somehow it sounds like we don't actually have free will, merely an illusion of it. Thank you, brain!

There are at least some reputable and credentialed physicists that will tell you you have no free will, for the reasons you state. I think it's still an open question. How can we know, when no biophysicist in the world can tell us what the mechanism that causes consciousness is, much less "free will"? You might doubt whether you have free will, but you no doubt have consciousness... but what is it, at the lowest quantum level? Is it millions of tiny particles going through their predetermined motions? If so, not only is your free will an illusion, not only do you not actually make "decisions"... your every thought and feeling is just a robotic playing out of the predetermined behavior of each of millions of these particles, doing their inevitable behaviors with no control. If you have no free will, that includes not having the free will to form thoughts... those thoughts are just illusions created by the particles in your brain and your consciousness, whatever that is, is just a passive observer with no control over them.

I think the free will question is often too simplified by philosophical views. Some say, that because there are constraints (environment, physics, etc), we cannot have a free will in principle. However, even in a very limited environment, we still can have infinite amount of options. If we are to choose a number between 0-1, we still have infinite number of options despite the strict limits.
Another thing is, that it only takes a simple double pendulum to create a chaos movements. Considering how much more complex the environment and living things are, we can never work with the complete set of information. We always have to make guesses.

First the definition of free will, has to be established, which is difficult, and then we need to understand, why the brain has already made a choice about something, long before we are conscious about it. That is, to my knowledge, still an enigma to science.
The thought of not really calling the shots, when a decision is made, is scary to most.
For example, can you choose to like vegetables, if you normally dislike them?
I have trouble getting it down, and it would make my life easier, if I could change this inconvenience.

Very nice explanation but I am always wondering.. . why? Why would anything that starts of as nothing more than a hot mess, give rise to things like evolution and all that comes with it? I mean it's weird that somehow there is a need for the universe to make itself increasingly complex. Why would that be a thing if everything could have just stayed simple or non-existent at all?

Good question! I think complexity can be explained after evolution takes over. The key question to me is how did the first self-replicating entity come about. There are some theories on this. The one that makes the most sense to me is one by Jeremy England. I talked about this a little bit in my video titled "Abiogenesis" -- The driving force is energy and entropy. In a nutshell, living systems process energy much more efficiently than nonliving systems.

@@robertpupo Find some entity to do my gravity test and potentially have the literal theory of everything for this universe: (copy and paste from my files):
      Revised TOE: 3/25/2017a.
      My Current TOE:
      THE SETUP:
      1. Modern science currently recognizes four forces of nature: The strong nuclear force, the weak nuclear force, gravity, and electromagnetism.
      2. In school we are taught that with magnetism, opposite polarities attract and like polarities repel. But inside the arc of a large horseshoe magnet it's the other way around, like polarities attract and opposite polarities repel. (I have proved this to myself with magnets and anybody with a large horseshoe magnet and two smaller bar magnets can easily prove this to yourself too. It occurs at the outer end of the inner arc of the horseshoe magnet.).
      3. Charged particles have an associated magnetic field with them.
      4. Protons and electrons are charged particles and have their associated magnetic fields with them.
      5. Photons also have both an electric and a magnetic component to them.
FOUR FORCES OF NATURE DOWN INTO TWO:
      6. When an electron is in close proximity to the nucleus, it would basically generate a 360 degree spherical magnetic field.
      7. Like charged protons would stick together inside of this magnetic field, while simultaneously repelling opposite charged electrons inside this magnetic field, while simultaneously attracting the opposite charged electrons across the inner portion of the electron's moving magnetic field.
      8. There are probably no such thing as "gluons" in actual reality.
      9. The strong nuclear force and the weak nuclear force are probably derivatives of the electro-magnetic field interactions between electrons and protons.
      10. The nucleus is probably an electro-magnetic field boundary.
      11. Quarks also supposedly have a charge to them and then would also most likely have electro-magnetic fields associated with them, possibly a different arrangement for each of the six different type of quarks.
      12. The interactions between the quarks EM forces are how and why protons and neutrons formulate as well as how and why protons and neutrons stay inside of the nucleus and do not just pass through as neutrinos do.
THE GEM FORCE INTERACTIONS AND QUANTA:
      13. Personally, I currently believe that the directional force in photons is "gravity". It's the force that makes the sine wave of EM energy go from a wide (maximum extension) to a point (minimum extension) of a moving photon and acts 90 degrees to the EM forces which act 90 degrees to each other. When the EM gets to maximum extension, "gravity" flips and EM goes to minimum, then "gravity" flips and goes back to maximum, etc, etc. A stationary photon would pulse from it's maximum extension to a point possibly even too small to detect, then back to maximum, etc, etc.
      14. I also believe that a pulsating, swirling singularity (which is basically a pulsating, swirling 'gem' photon) is the energy unit in this universe.
      15. When these pulsating, swirling energy units interact with other energy units, they tangle together and can interlock at times. Various shapes (strings, spheres, whatever) might be formed, which then create sub-atomic material, atoms, molecules, and everything in existence in this universe.
      16. When the energy units unite and interlock together they would tend to stabilize and vibrate.
      17. I believe there is probably a Photonic Theory Of The Atomic Structure.
      18. Everything is basically "light" (photons) in a universe entirely filled with "light" (photons).
      THE MAGNETIC FORCE SPECIFICALLY:
      19. When the electron with it's associated magnetic field goes around the proton with it's associated magnetic field, internal and external energy oscillations are set up.
      20. When more than one atom is involved, and these energy frequencies align, they add together, specifically the magnetic field frequency.
      21. I currently believe that this is where a line of flux originates from, aligned magnetic field frequencies.
      NOTES:
      22. The Earth can be looked at as being a massive singular interacting photon with it's magnetic field, electrical surface field, and gravity, all three photonic forces all being 90 degrees from each other.
      23. The flat spiral galaxy can be looked at as being a massive singular interacting photon with it's magnetic fields on each side of the plane of matter, the electrical field along the plane of matter, and gravity being directed towards the galactic center's black hole where the gravitational forces would meet, all three photonic forces all being 90 degrees from each other.
      24. As below in the singularity, as above in the galaxy and probably universe as well.
      25. I believe there are only two forces of nature, Gravity and EM, (GEM). Due to the stability of the GEM with the energy unit, this is also why the forces of nature haven't evolved by now. Of which with the current theory of understanding, how come the forces of nature haven't evolved by now since the original conditions acting upon the singularity aren't acting upon them like they originally were, billions of years have supposedly elapsed, in a universe that continues to expand and cool, with energy that could not be created nor destroyed would be getting less and less dense? My theory would seem to make more sense if in fact it is really true. I really wonder if it is in fact really true.
      26. And the universe would be expanding due to these pulsating and interacting energy units and would also allow galaxies to collide, of which, how could galaxies ever collide if they are all speeding away from each other like is currently taught?
      DISCLAIMER:
      27. As I as well as all of humanity truly do not know what we do not know, the above certainly could be wrong. It would have to be proved or disproved to know for more certainty.

@@robertpupo Here is the test for the 'gravity' portion of my TOE idea. I do not have the necessary resources to do the test but maybe you or someone else reading this does, will do the test, then tell the world what is found out either way.
      a. Imagine a 12 hour clock.
      b. Put a magnetic field across from the 3 to 9 o'clock positions.
      c. Put an electric field across from the 6 to 12 o'clock positions.
(The magnetic field and electric field would be 90 degrees to each other and should be polarized so as to complement each other.)
      d. Shoot a high powered laser through the center of the clock at 90 degrees to the em fields.
      e. Do this with the em fields on and off.
(The em fields could be varied in size, strength, density and depth. The intent would be to energy frequency match the laser and em fields for optimal results.)
      f. Look for any gravitational / anti-gravitational effects.
(Including the utilization of ferro cells so as to be able to actually see the energy field movements.)
(And note: if done right, it's possible a mini gravitational black hole might form. Be ready for it. In addition, it's possible a neutrino might be formed before the black hole stage, the neutrino being a substance with a very high gravitational modality with very low 'em' modalities.)
(An alternative to the above would be to shoot 3 high powered lasers, or a single high powered laser split into 3 beams, each adjustable to achieve the above set up, all focused upon a single point in space.)
'If' effects are noted, 'then' further research could be done.
'If' effects are not noted, 'then' my latest TOE idea is wrong. But still, we would know what 'gravity' was not, which is still something in the scientific world. Science still wins either way and moves forward.

@@milap.1616 "IF" my TOE is correct, then the 'gem' photon is the energy unit of this universe that makes up everything in existence in this universe, including space and time (space being energy itself and time being the flow of energy), as well as numbers and constants for math to do what math does in this existence.
Here is a copy and paste from my files of a part of my conversation with another individual concerning 'cause and effect', potentially showing how the 'gem' photon is it's own self causal effect, and hence, truly eternally existent.
I can clearly see what you are saying about the effect of a cause in itself may be a cause for a later effect. And in that regard, yes it could be seen as being the same. But a 'cause' usually comes before an 'effect'. And in that context, if something never ever changes, the cause brings about an effect (no change) which in itself is a cause (no change) which then brings about an effect (no change),......., and both the cause and effect are identical and no change occurs.
But now, if some state of existence changes somewhere in the process, either via a cause that is not identical to the effect or an effect that is not identical to a cause, then change occurs. But for a change to occur that causes some later effect still puts a cause before an effect. One total state of existence changing to bring about another total but different state of existence.
Logically speaking, I can't see how one could have a different state of existence (effect) from a previous state of existence that was not identical (cause) to bring about the later different state of existence. And sure, that later effect might possibly be the cause to future effects and so on and so forth and possibly life happens and evolves in a cause/effect/cause/effect.... kind of way.
And in essence, 'if' for example my latest theory of everything is really true, that the pulsating, swirling 'gem' photon is the basic energy unit of this universe that brings about everything in this universe, including even numbers themselves for math to do what math does, a singular energy unit with 3 different modalities, each modality acting 90 degrees from the other two, while the basic structure of the 'gem' photon itself never changes, it's the interaction with other 'gem' photons in existence whereby other future effects occur in a cause and effect kind of way. And sure, later effects become the cause of later effects and so on and so forth. But the pulsating, swirling 'gem' photons themselves would eternally exist as they themselves make up space and time itself. Eternally the same, but yet interactions with other like 'gem' photons brings about change. (But I fully acknowledge that this TOE idea is dependent upon the results of my gravity test.) But in the context of this discussion, it is a possibility at this time of how reality truly is.
In essence, the basic pulsating, swirling 'gem' photon would be both the 'cause' and the 'effect' all contained within itself and in that context, both the 'cause' and 'effect' would be identical.
      * Added note: The universe ALWAYS existed in some form and did not have a beginning, nor might it ever end. The creation accounts in the Bible and other religion's belief systems, as well as the singular 'big bang' theory, are all just fairy tales. The 'gem' photon would be it's own self causal effect, and hence, eternally existent.

@DECLAN DOUGAN You can say that about many things.
Can you say that about consciousness and awareness?
Determinism is not something written in stone. It took full flight after the work of Newton and Lagrange who were able to mathematically predict the future and the past of a body if parameters such as position and momentum are known. (in the case of Lagrange, it was the principle of least action that was applied and the same predictions are arrived at).
At we know Newtonian or Classical physics became a limited theory when General Relativity and Quantum Physics emerged in the early 20th century.
People often confuse Quantum Physics as a non deterministic theory. The Shroedinger Wave Function is not a non-deterministic equation. In fact it's a deterministic relationship and is the main equation used in Quantum Mechanical systems.
If there is no free will, then how are all events pre-determined? Does that mean that a creator is required? Then the question arises: Does the creator have free will? If so, why would He/She/It create a universe with mindless automata that have their entire future already set out for them?

Because without quantum indeterminacy, all of the organism's actions would be (in principle) pre-determined, regardless of how unpredictable and complex they might seem to us (due to our ignorance of all the factors at play). And this agency only emerges when a certain level of complexity is reached, and this complexity is only achievable by accessing an energy threshold?
And the evolutionary mechanism that makes complexity possible is a product of accessing a great amount of energy from the enviroment?

Pretty much any biological entity is driven by it, or so it appears. The deeper mechanism is perhaps efficient use of energy - thermodynamics. There appears to be some evidence of this based on some recent papers. Great questions!

By consciousness, I don't necessarily mean the higher cognitive functions that humans possess, but rather an "intelligent principle" that embodies purpose, prediction, and decision-making at the most fundamental levels, along with a glimmer of self-awareness (the organism must, at some rudimentary level, be "aware" that it is somewhat separate from its external environment). Consciousness can also be defined as an "organizing principle," allowing living organisms to navigate thermodynamics in such a way as to create localized order within a greater context of increasing entropy

That's an interesting thought. In principle, if one knew your psychological history, and your past scribblings, they might be able to predict with high degree of accuracy, what you are most likely to scribble. An equation might not be necessary.

I'm quite proud of the vast complexity of my randomness 😅 That said, maybe the closest thing we could get to a prediction would be probabilities on the location of my next line. Sound familiar?

"Free" will is an illusion. Probably so we don't go crazy.
It is true that we can do what we want. In fact, I would say we ONLY do what we want. We can't do things we don't want to do, that's simply not how our brains work. Everything boils down to the purely selfish reason "I did it, because I wanted to do it" even seemingly selfless acts are based on egoism. We do the things we do to get pleasure and avoid pain. That's what every organism does.
So we do have will, but we can't choose what it is that we truly want, so we can't call it "free" will. I honestly don't know how "true free will" would even work in this universe.

My theory on free will is: Each universe is intrinsically tied to causality. However as conscious beings, we forge out own path through the multiverse, our consciousness (whether a a simple emergent property of the complexity of the brain, or something more) is what decides which path we take, and therefore, which branch of the multiverse we end up in.
Obviously our choices are limited to what is permitable by physical laws.
But this way, we can have free will in a deterministic universe, because our consciousness operates a level above that of the laws of causality, on a quantum level.

What if you "froze" a human brain in time, making the brain "read only" as in computer terms, would we still have agency? Or would our actions be totally predictable?
Then selectively "unfreeze" (make writable) just a certain part like working memory. Does that change the answer to the same question?

    • @ArvinAsh
      @ArvinAsh  3 роки тому +4

Good question. I don't know. My guess would be that this process would not be like a computer. Because so many parts of the brain work together in unison, I'm not sure you could so selectively activate one area of brain functioning, while tuning out the rest.

    • @canwelook
      @canwelook 3 роки тому +1

Reading context is necessarily selective, and so is an act of agency driven by our will. If only we could choose what we will then we would have true agency.

Agency being relative to memory efficiency reminds me of good vs bad quality training data for deep learning. The more relevant features in the training data, the better the predictions. And it seems the more specific a memory is (storing most relevant data which is less space) then the more agency because more accurate recognition of the same stimuli leading to more consistent behavior?
