Schlock... The Ultimate B-Movie!!! John Landis' First Film - Rental Reviews

- Опубліковано 5 вер 2024
- It's Ape-ril at Cinemassacre Video. "All Ape Movies, All April Long!!" James and Justin sit down (in different stores) to review Schlock, John Landis' first movie from 1973. In Schlock, a small town is terrorized by "The Banana Killer", which turns out to be the missing link between man and ape. "Schlock" (the ape/big foot) is a prehistoric apeman who falls in love with a teenage blind beauty and terrorizes her Southern California suburb. Schlock is no ordinary simian as he possesses some very unusual skills. Among other things, he plays the piano and gives TV interviews. In this spoof of early monster movies and missing-link science fiction films, John Landis pays homage to the monster movies of the past with irreverent humor and wacky hijinks.
It's "Ape-ril" all April at Cinemassacre Video!!!

Atleast cinemassacre is keeping this quarantine worthwhile...thanks guys!
I love their "everyman " reviews. These reviews have been great. They research the films and drop constant random trivia. Very watchable and addicting. Keep up the great work guys.
Not anymore :(
If I'm watching a movie called "Schlock" I expect it to be Grade-APE material.
I’d prefer Grape Ape material.
Actually I’d prefer Magilla Gorilla.
@@justincoleman3805 Nice Hanna Bonbara reference.
*Insert laughing track*
Fried chicken and watermelon
This is such a great episode including social distancing and quarantining
"Schlock" used to come on about 3 times a year on a local UHF station's late night creature feature. I never missed it.
Did your UHF station ever play "UHF" ?
That's weird, "schlock" used to come on about 3 times a _night_ on my local UHF stations...
Would love to see Clint Eastwood “Every Which Way but Loose” for April
Classic
That god damn ape ate a whole bag of Oreos
U spelled aperil wrong...
CLIDE!
Yes!
Well he did do “blues brothers 2000’s” so this wouldn’t be his worst.
Oscar.
BB2K wouldn't have been as bad if they didn't just recycle most of the jokes form the original. It's just sad to watch after how amazing the original was.
I liked the music in B.B 2000. Those sequences were done pretty well. Movie itself is ok, just background noise really
"The Stupids" is his worst by far.
@@PetaHatingChris42 I kinda like the Stupids!
People using facetime on CRT televisions is one of those things I thought I would never see.
Lost it at Bigfoot in the Zapruder film. I love these little edits!
I will always have a soft spot for this movie. I watched this in my anthropology class. My professor said it was important. We were all confused over this b movie. Then toward the end she says there I am. My professor was a random extra on a dancing scene with teens. It's an odd but great movie though haha
I wasn't until halfway through this that I realized: Oh Crap, they didn't half-ass this, they really are on a conference call of some kind making this video. I respect the lengths.
I lost it at the “Bigfoot Zabruder Film”
Fun fact: The Schlock movie poster is seen behind Michael Jackson in the Thriller videoclip, when he's in the movie theater entrance with his gf.
I remember “see you next Wednesday” from Michael Jackson’s thriller music video, that Landis directed
John Landis also directed 'Thriller' for MJ too.
He also killed a guy and 2 children when he directed "The Twilight Zone."
twilight zone movie where 3 people died and 6 were injured because Landis didn't care about regulation.
Any Type Beat schlock is a fun but awful b movie😎
Everyone knows that. Thanks imdb.
you dont speak for me. thanks!
“The Ultimate B-Movie!”
Killer Klowns From Outer Space: I beg to differ...
This one is way, way more campy
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes
"Police station, Mooney speaking. Killer clowns ey?"
"Bad Taste"
Night of the Creeps.
I remember as a kid, the video rental excursions with my parents. Best of times. The best night was watching Robocop and Predator, back to back. I went to school the next day and was a god. One other night we watched Schlock and 2001: A Space Odyssey back to back. Didn't go down as well at school, but it was a funking awesome night! R.I.P. video rentals. I miss them so much.
11:00
The mad ape is attacking!
*_SMAAAASH!!_*
999 HP of damage to Ness!
Surprised you had that many commercials with Tubi. Normally it's only 2 commercial interruptions and that's it.
i think the term Schlock still holds. And, if they dont know, we teach then.
Well, they watch stuff like Riverdale, which is pure schlock.
@@praxicoide But the new "Sabrina" has some similarities to "Riverdale" , but it is actually awesome.
06:30 My thumbs raise whenever someone reference to Ric Flair!
I raise four fingers.
@@JMFabiano lol
We always have a "looks like kieran moment" in every movie. Please, we need a special epjsode , your fans need this
again, much respect to the audio editing. Love that James is on a CRT monitor.
"Thus things gonna get worse before it gets better" true words in these times
"See you next Wednesday " is a line used in Michael Jackson's thriller too. Also directed by Landis.
When I was really young, I rented this movie, but it was called "The Banana Monster." Then we rented another movie later called "The Schlock Monster." It was the same movie.
This could have been reversed, but that might explain the name. ONe name didn't work, so they renamed it.
"Wrong. I'm gonna go see what's the matter." Is that Neil Breen?😂
Hey James, you should review "Revenge of the Nerds" for Rental Reviews!
I must see Schlock, after seeing this review!! You guys are truly awesome! The kind of people I could see myself hanging with!
I can listen to James talking about ape movies for hours
OMG...I love that scientist with the pipe on his head! That is going to me by next cosplay!
Kentucky Fried Movie has an ape sequence... directed by John Landis.
With Rick Baker as Dino the Mad Gorilla. Appropriately named after Dino De Laurentis and his not so good experience on the '76 King Kong remake.
Has anyone else watched the Twilight Zone: The Movie episode of Cursed Films on Shudder recently and had their opinion of John Landis diminished quite a bit? I was really surprised he didn't suffer much more for getting those two children killed.
My opinion of him was completely negative well before Cursed Films. He was a selfish idiot and he deserves all the scorn he gets
Getting two children killed? What?
Been way ahead of the curve there.
@@viljamtheninjado you live under a rock?
Is that a Queen Amidala pen holder on Justin's desk?
10:55 Alright Landis you got me with that one. That was funny.
Thank you guys for continuing to. Post. Great content for us. I know. It must not be easy. With everybody staying at home but seriously we appreciate it👍👍👍
I thought 'See You Next Wednesday' was a play on the old UK mannerism / euphemism for C*nt : "he was a bit of a C U Next Tuesday"
The scene where the ape's picture is on the car window is totally my type of humour. I miss stuff like that.
lol at the policeman on the left holding the shotgun in a not so professional manner. @3:27
Was gonna comment that. Glad I'm not the only one who caught it.
Respecting the Corona-Quarantine and Social Distancing! Props James!
I call the 2001 theme, The Ric Flair theme
I wrote this about 10 second before Justin mentioned Flair..
I have to give a thumbs up to the The Gate T-shirt. That movie was awesome.
Shlock is just a gem. There's bad and then there's charming bad. Shlock is charming bad.
Those gumballs in his machine are nearly as old as these movies! ~A rare and collectable find that should be appreciated, the same way these movies are reviewed in my honest opinion.
Dude! I love this style of movie review how you combined yourself and your buddy back and forth through a computer so awesome please continue with this style ✌😊
I sense Red Giant’s Universe FX which are wholly necessary and fantastic. Great work as always guys!
Love the skyping on old 90s desktops😂
He's always like that *smiles widely*
Charles Gemora was probably the best gorilla suit actor. I hope you get the chance to review his work in The Monster and the Girl.
Schlock is a word alot of young people know. Redlettermedia use it alot
That still doesn’t equate to “a lot of young people.”
This reminds me of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. Alot of those jokes leave me scratching my head.
One of my favourite movies of my early years. So much fun
I feel like next month will be AniMay
Or May-Hem.
Hmmm, Akira, what else?
Except anime isn't really Cinemasacre's forte. In fact, have they ever reviewed an anime?
@@Morgil27 That's what would make it great, there are enough classic anime movies like Akira and Spirited Away that are easily on par with live-action classics, I would love to see a few get reviewed
@@Morgil27 They reviewed Akira already. It was their review that got me to try and watch it, but I hate all the gore and bad vibes. I had to shut it off
I think I need to listen to "Apeman" by The Kinks for some reason...
I'd like to see a review of "The Incredible Shrinking Woman" with Lily Tomlin sometime this month. The movie has an ape protagonist.
the editing of this video is really good!
thx for the entertainment guys
loving Ape-ril
"More than a town.
Much more than a city.
Where ever there's love.
You'll be a Wichita.
Wichita! (Wichita!) Wichita!"
I saw this movie when i was about 10 years old or something, under it's alternate title "Banana Monster". i was obsessed with gorillas as a kid. All I remember was the blind girl thinking he was a dog. i even wrote about watching it and that scene in my elementary school journal and I think i drew a picture of the ape in there. Cool to see it revisited, not sure if I'd bother rewatching ti now as an adult.
Thanks for this great review, James~! I'll have to 'watch out' for this one LOL.
"A message! Scrawled in blood..."
What's it say?
"See you next Wednesday..."
Michael Jackson's Thriller, directed by John Landis.
I knew I knew that line from somewhere
I'm very surprised they didn't mention it.
14:50 hard cut to this lookalike guy drinking beer made me laugh so hard
this, more than any movie ive seen in a while, had me repeating the question “what the hell is this?” more times than ive ever said in a day in my life.
To be honest the last good John Landis movie was that Stallone comedy film Oscar. As The Stupids is easily his worst film.
The Stupids is a masterpiece. A stupid masterpiece.
@@justincoleman3805 Praise the Lloyd! I love The Stupids - if nothing else, you can't say it didn't live up to its name.
Innocent Blood was solid.
Oscar was awful..sly can't do comedy..rhinestone much?
Beneath the Planet of the Apes is underrated
Cinemassacre should do a segment when you review a movie suggested by the subscribers! 🤘🏻
We're definitely going to call it the Big Foot Zapruder film now.
Funny, when I see the Nerd room, I feel like I see my own home.
6:14 Nah, "Also sprach Zarathustra" is about an half hour long so,,, no, they NEVER play the whole thing
I'm really loving APE-ril, but personally I'm looking forward to Tobey MAY-guire.
Thanks for continuing to make content. I laugh my ass off everytime I hear ape ril hahahha
Please do Sylvio during the next year's Aperil. I know it's "too recent" and "independent" (literally a production that was funded via a kickstarter), but it fits Aperil's theme PERFECTLY, as well as general topic on independent film-making. It really fits right up your usual alley, both as real person James and as AVGN character.
Bob Burns' book "It Came from Bob's Basement" is also a great read.
It's amazing that this movie produced a term that is used to speak of low budget horror movies!
It's actually a Yiddish word.
The word existed long before this movie.
Kong in the giant monsterverse is played by Toby Kebbel. Most people just assume it's Andy Serkis, but hey, Toby deserves to be recognized!
James it would be nice if you do a special video about the recenly passed Stuart Gordon and his career.
(Please like this comment guys so it may gets noticed. Thanks)
I like how Landis directed Vic Morrow the most.
I love that you guys are video conferencing on a CRT. That's what you call commiting to the bit.
Justin just got like 3000 points for that awesome tshirt.
hey, maybe John Landis' son has a new internet show he can go on to talk about his dad's movies after RLM ghosted him.
Everytime I see the Sonic the Hedgehog movie on the table and I really want to know when they will talk about it...
Dude! Do you really waited for an april to use the very joke - ape-reel?! LOL I like it
I just went and watched it. I love it!!!!! BWAAHAAHAA
4:12, it's a cell animation.
This
two things about this review!
1. I never have seen this movie just until Blockbuster and Hollywood video went out of business!
and 2. at 1:20 this is a must-own book along with "Two Guys Named Joe", "the 50 Greatest Cartoons" and "Mark Twain's Own Autobiography"!
There's no apes in Phat Beach but you should still review it
Loving the content guys, started originally with watching AVGN and now I lovr watching all your content, especially need it at a time like this. Really like how you used the old TVs for video calling :)
APE-RIL
I love it!
What a legend
The "See you next Wednesday" quote is also said in the intro to Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' music video, when he's just about to leave the movie theater to follow his scared date outside. The man in the movie they're watching says it, and the way he says it always stuck with me for some reason, even to this day. It's interesting for me to learn only now that it was kind of a low-key running joke in film. lol
I miss the Rental Reviews theme song m-m-m-m-meant for mommy's and dad's!
Keep up the great reviews guys!
There's a Schlock poster in the movie theater scene of Kentucky Fried Movie, directed by Landis. And Landis was in Robocop if I'm not mistaken, the 6000 SUX ad.
Could you do a video of how you Write your screenplay please Because I’ve been trying to write my own and I’m not too sure how to start
I have that John Landis 'Monsters in the Movies" book and it is indeed fantastic.
I think the reason for so meany ape movies back then is cause the ape costume was a convincing practical effect it got used often. I'm reminded of the ape in Trading Places.
with the "people in ape movies watching other ape movies" thing in mind, i'm reminded of a bit in the original Jumanji where the monkeys see Wizard of Oz playing in a TV store and they start hopping around like the flying monkeys :P
Considering the angle the 'C' falls in, I would think he just pulled a string. XD
Thank you, James for always finding shit for me to watch!
I dig that justin is chatting with james on that old monitor lol
Oh my God, how did I never hear of this movie??? Now I have to track it down and see it...
