I'm really disappointed that you didn't talk about the theorized (and then confirmed) motive of Giovanni; - That he was stealing Pokemon not just to make money, but also to find strong Pokemon. - That he knew Blaine and wanted to revive the Fossils they were collecting in Mt. Moon. - That he was trying to capture powerful Ghost Pokemon in the Pokemon Tower. (strong against Psychic) - And that he took over Silph Co in order to expedite the production of the prototype Master Ball All steps in an attempt to capture, subdue, or subjugate Mewtwo, whom Giovanni helped create and is hiding in Cerulean Cave. I'm not going to go into it, but there are hints towards this all through the games and it was essentially confirmed in the Pokemon Origins series.
22:52 I really love that you brought up the fact that Team Rocket is supposed to represent real villainy!! Battling the dead Marowak they killed as a kid is terrifying but that’s what made it so much more interesting! Because real life villains really go to any extent for their own gain- that’s what makes them evil!
Not me looking for the next in the series when everything is fresh off the press 😭 But seriously, I loved this entire thing and I'm keeping an eye out for sure
Looking forward to seeing this channel blow up, good stuff. Also wanted to say the motive of Rocket in Gen 1/2 not being some huge cosmic thing fits with the sort of magic realism of early Pokémon. It’s still our world in many ways, and hadn’t developed into its own universe per se.
Team Yell is hardly the antagonist of anything, I want to see how you classify them. If they're villainous, then a drink uncle yelling at a barbecue is a criminal mastermind.
Dog great video! Glad you were able to finally get started can't wait for more! Doesn't matter that it was a year later than promised but I am here for it!
Team yell is well written for what they were going for Every team is unique they shouldn’t all be judged on the same scale Also macro cosmos is the evil team
There’s definitely something to be said for the simplicity of team rocket, they just want money. it’s realistic and organizations like them exist in real life.
It's also cool how you're not really ever "forced" to beat team rocket, which works with their mafia persona. Like in other games it's a major part of the story and another character says you have to go stop Team Magma here or Galactic here. Nobody is telling you what to do in Kanto and when you see Team Rocket members in an area like saffron you know somethings up and you as the player "choose" to stop the threat instead of being told. I know you have to beat them to progress but there's still an illusion of player choice in Kanto
Don't forget the burned mansion on Cinnabar Island. Although it is not an official Team Rocket base, it is connected to the information on Mew, who Team Rocket cloned to make Mewtwo. For me, the in-game reason for it's destruction is that Mewtwo destroyed the mansion.
@@deanlemckeevans I was hesitant to add details about the Mansion since there is no direct mention of Team Rocket there in FRLG However, I definitely want to explore some theories in another video, thank you for watching!
@@onlyFLYBOY Yeah, the anime and the Pokemon Adventures manga make it abundantly clear that Mewtwo's creation was at least bankrolled by Team Rocket, but the games have none of that. On the topic of the manga though, Team Rocket gets more dangerous since Lt. Surge, Koga and Sabrina are all members, Blaine used to work for them, and in the GSC manga, the reformed Team Rocket was led by Pryce, with Will and Karen as two of his direct underlings.
The thing I like about Team Rocket is that they have everything to do with pokémon. Their whole thing is that they hurt pokémon for profit, and that makes them the antithesis to the player, who is a pokémon trainer and thus (presumably) love pokémon. Compare that to something like team Galactic, which has virtually nothing to do with the pokémon themselves, and this fact plus the increased stakes and absurdity of their plan just serves to raise the disbelief on the fact that 10 year old trainers just keep foiling evil organizations around the world. Also I really love the pokémon origins episode where Red battles Giovanni in the Viridian gym.
I also feel like they were farming the tm to sell at celadon. That’s why they stole the dig tm. I always assumed that they found out how to synth and re sell them
Great video, especially for your first upload. That said, pretty wild to not even mention jesse and james when you’re talking about team rocket. Guessing you never played yellow
With the fossils, I moreso got the vibe that the science guy found both of them first and the grunt was gonna take both of them by force but the guy lets you have one for chasing the grunt off; the implied crime being assault.
Actually, Team Rocket is moreso inspired by the Yakuza than the Italian Mafia. That implication was just a result of Giovanni's localized name in the English version and has only recently been leaned into with that song in Pokemoj Masters EX that pays heavy homage to the Godfather theme.
The guy "settles" into one of the most powerful roles in pokemon, a gym leader. He then is inspired to be good based on a fight with a 10 year old. Too bad being a good father is a myth in pokemon lol Incredible character with a great plot twist. Blue and Giovanni were the best twists.
MORE often than Pikachu. Pikachu wasn't catchable in gen 5 Also, on the topic of Giovanni being the 8th gym leader. Think of it from this perspective. Red is an 11 year old (it's in the handbook), he probably hasn't even been as far as Pewter city before at the start of the game, and if he has been to Viridian City, it was with his mother. The world outside of Pallet town is foreign to him, and even the Viridian Forest is terrifying to him (which is explained by the music) The first time you encounter Team Rocket, Red is very far from home, and he keeps on encountering them in major cities, far away from the peace of his home. Then you get to the 8th gym and find the leader of this criminal team within spitting distance of YOUR HOME.
I’m posting this before this channel posts a video looking at any Gen 3 teams. As crazy as the motivation of messing with nature is, I feel like life is imitating art. We have ignorant but like minded crazies driven to radical extremes to bring about change in the real world, and that helps give the two Gen 3 teams some plausibility despite how ridiculous the motivation is.
Team Rocket's motivation has always been aces to me, especially when it incorporated things like heists and poaching, neither of which the police can easily keep up with. I'm glad other teams had big goals instead of money (and Team Plasma pretending to have a big goal in pursuit of getting money...and everything else), but I also think the series is overdue for another profit-hungry Team.
Also nugget bridge is GOATED because if you defeat all the trainers, catch a weak pokemon and keep losing to the rocket grunt, you'll get infinite money
@28:08 I know you were going off of games only, but in the pokemon adventures manga series, the elite four just explicitly work with team rocket, and they try and kill the main characters multiple times.
@@onlyFLYBOY I haven't read the entire manga series, only the kanto portion, but it goes all the way up to the Kalos series iirc. I've seen panels of the later stories and it takes the evil teams into some wild places, and it's way darker so you often get to see the evil teams be much more sinister and visceral.
Giovanni and team rocket are a Yakuza branch they're not a mafioso branch remember you're dealing with a Japanese game that means they wouldn't be Italian Mafia in it
I think its interesting that all the stuff you love about Team Rocket is why I find them so boring. I get what you're saying about the others coming off as anime villains... but pokémon is a JRPG. They *should* be anime villains.
I disagree. Yeah, Pokemon is a JRPG, but what made Team Rocket interesting was the fact that they felt more grounded in reality. In the attempt to make Pokemon's evil teams more in lines with a typical JRPG villain group, the evil teams end up being laughable bad and forgettable. They lost what made them unique. People are tired of terrorists and genocidal maniacs and want criminals again.
@saucymongoose7246 I dunno, the only really forgettable one was Yell and the point was they weren't even actually villains though it was handled badly I fully admit. Like, the *original* versions of Aqua and Magma sucked, but they're more engaging in the remakes. Plasma is just a new take on the actual mafia, though they're pretending to be something else. The only actually genocidal ones (at least in intentional goals) are Galactic and Flare. The OG team rocket lacks personality, and that's one of the reasons I actually prefer them in HGSS.
@christophermitchell9739 I disagree that they lack a personality. It's not as strong as Plasma or Skull, who are the only 3 evil teams to me that have one, but it's still present. No other evil team other than Rocket or Plasma felt intimidating. These 3 are the only good evil teams because they feel grounded. Team A&M are more or less the same in ORAS, albeit slightly better, but their plans are still bizarre and frankly stupid. Galactic and Flair are so boring and generic because they just want to create creative a whole new universe/destroy humanity for no real proper or justifiable reason. Team Star is good in concept but meh in execution, and whatever the name of Chairman Rose's team are ACTUALLY the worst team in Pokemon.
the game coner hide out was done long before they steal dig it would take years to make a base that big even with pokemon for wxamples look how much changes i 3 years during gold/silver that was still years of work even with pokemon like machoke being used for construction its soooo much worse in the manga they used hipno to put everyone to sleep and kadabra to put a barrier around all of Saffron city as well as all the rockets blocking doors you see in game and oh 3 gym leaders are there and working for Geovanni lt Surge was using the ss ann to smuggle stolen pokemon out of the region Koga who was experimenting with medicines to make pokemon stronger and more aggressive and Sabarna who used her psychic powers and pokemon putting a barrier around the city and keep everyone docile with hipno pokemon origan's actually goes into Geovanni's motives a little he started off a lot like Red even with a Charmander but at some point wining and money had become all he cared about and pokemon became nothing but sunlessness to him

Let's be real. The only reason Lorelei cared was because it was her island that was affected.
With mentioning Malva in the E4. It made me realize they haven't done an evil team champion yet. I think that would be an interesting story element
