I purchased a home in Ocean Shores recently and have been researching the community and government. There's all sorts of questionable shenanigans going on. E.g. despite the South end eroding, the City of Ocean Shores has been selling sand! The peninsula is literally eroding away, and the City Council is selling off the very thing the city needs to literally survive.
It's very sad- I spent a good deal of time in Ocean Shores growing up (my uncle used to own a lot down by the Jetty- long before even the first condos were built), my wife and I had our honeymoon at the Shilo Inn, and I had my last combined family vacation there (myself, my wife & daughter, my parents and my older brother) before I moved my family out-of-state. That so many instances of mismanagement, fraud, or corruption could happen in one small coastal city- speaks volumes about how broken our systems of governance have become.
The City of Ocean Shores is not alone, but if we can start to clean up small towns, we can work towards the counties and bigger cities, and eventually the state...
I'm shocked the golf course has stayed open. I have never heard of anyone going out there to golf. People go to walk on the beach, fly kites, eat fish and chips and ice cream and go to little boutiques. Sounds like horrible corruption. People need to pay attention to what is going on in their communities. This is why I have no sympathy for the Ocean Shores residents. They were "asleep at the wheel" so they got the government they deserve.
Sometimes people just want to drive their car, not work on the engine. Make no mistake though, there are many of us who are working to try to fix things in O.S. But we're up against things like the current mayor forbidding city employees to speak to a particular council member, jumping up in the middle of a resident's public comment and yanking the mic cable out, a handful of council members announcing that "public comment" at council meetings should be abolished, and one particular council member admitting in a public document that he voted to greenlight a rather expensive project "along political lines" and not because it was a good idea. And then there are some state and county agencies who could step in but for some reason always choose to turn their back when queried. There is no oversight here -- the mayor has worked hard to establish herself as her own "oversight" and she's running the totalitarian playbook.
Most of the time, it appears that people just are not aware. I will also point out, the current mayor has no mandate anyway (3 vote margin in an election is very tight, so I suspect people who live there realize there are problems).
