Same. I remember logging for the first time to a small server that quickly dissipated, which made it so that I ended up with a 1v1 with a new player that also didn't knew how to play. So I was like "Oh, this is pretty cool" and it was decently fun and promising. Aaaand then the next session just getting absolutly folded by 3 different pros for an hour and being like ":/", and I never joined back again.
Meanwhile I was fascinated with all the crazy animations at the time. Roblox back then (2009-2012) almost never displayed any custom animations like that. At least not the games I'd bump into. Sure I'd get cooked but I was having fun still.
@@pyeracki ended up fighting 3 toxic sweat teamers (Those mfs did not let me breathe. It was either being L danced on or being triple combo attack-spammed to the point of 7000 Ping) and my moves didnt work properly, so i quit the game and Said “nope, not doing this today.”
i remember getting checked so god damn hard dark magic players are like "Next step, discombobulate." "neck broken, discombobulate." "colon fractured discombobulate." "target winded discombobulate." "discombobulated, discombobulate."
Black magic was the first game that ever introduced me to active input, input delay, ping and such and I was like 13/14 sweating my butt off tryna use the intricate characters having a fight of my life with the sweats as they proceed invert my Roblox character (skill issued)
i was destroying my finger using berserker and ace of spade, played it every day so frequent that my finger skin started to get ripped. best game ever imo still misses the classic bm
Very surprised you didn't mention Shards of Genesis. While not directly tied with BM, it takes heavy inspiration (as in some of the same devs, same classes, same mechanics, same maps, same factions, literally Senshi and Enigma), and basically just polishes it to a decent degree. I would say it's the closest thing to a direct sequel. Anyways, great video. I used to play BM a lot when it was first released, but ended up losing my account, and all of my memories with it. It basically became a sleeper agent. Glad to see people still talk about it, despite the fact finding any info on it is straight up harder than solving Cicada 3301.
It is directly tied with bm, it used to be called black magic (something) before rename and the main developer is original creator of bm1 so its very much worth mentioning
@@parryblockdodge Well yeah. I just said it isn't directly tied since last time I checked, the devs specifically mentioned that the project wasn't linked to any previous BM projects, so I didn't want to say anything concrete.
I just wish they didn't mess with the cool downs and such. Me and my friend used to play that a lot, but then it felt like cooldowns got way too short and fights started lasting seconds over the usual longer fights
@@FluffiestPrince Originally it was named Black Magic Genesis, created by Qaeo to be kind of a fresh start. Qaeo quickly realized just having 'Black Magic' in the name burnt him out so he renamed it to Shards of Genesis. Realistically the game is closely tied to the original image of BM, but he doesn't really want it to be associated with BM, hence why he says it doesn't have any links to BM. Things did change, but it was originally a BM project.
Black Magic must stay dead. It is a corpse. It is a rotting, sickly corpse that has had about thirteen different revival spells cast upon it. But its concept for sure isn't dead, its influence still appears in so many different games either semi-related or even completely unrelated newgen experiences- and I don't think it'll disappear anytime soon for what it's worth. rest in piss black magic, you were strong.
The BEST aspect of this game is the hidden moves some classes had. Like on Paladin you had a muffin to heal yourself and a 'secret' 2-button move that made you into a self exploding nuke. These were never in the control settings for any of those classes, but any player was friendly enough to teach these to you. I remember being like 12/13 and spending my allowance on all the Black Magic game-passes I could get ahold of (this happened multiple times) I also remember getting recruited in a BM "clan" and they had me make a Skype and everything, we would join servers and just 1v1'd everyone until we wiped the server. There was such a nice friendly aspect to the game that I feel like should've attracted way more sweats/salty players than it actually did. And now I'm playing games that have this similar feel of gameplay. Good times.
@@IsoMarley8Honestly I meant mainly outside of roblox, these types of fighting games got me into the actual fighting game community-type games. Like Guilty Gear and even the newest Street Fighter (played a little Tekken 8 too, its fun) and it's a really cool thriving place for people that enjoy it. If you've ever played Berserker in BM, then learning combo strings in actual fighting games is like Berserker's older brother, it's way more fun than it seems. But ya know, only the people that neurodivergently focused on BM back then like me talks about stuff like this hahahaha
I remember the introduction of the emma series weapons. There were NO combo videos or guides around and it was all hearsay for how to use them. You basically had to find a master and beg to learn how to use keystroke weapons lmao. The most common was the big sword you heald backwards, but there still were plenty of niche moves no one even knew about. I remember kids begging me to teach them and got high off of that pretty much. I used to think I was so cool bc I knew how to use secret cutscene moves and grab moves built into the emma2 ravenger (the black magic logo weapon). No one used that weapon bc it was clunky and stupidly hard to use, but I kicked ass with it because it made 12 yr old me feel unique. Also cried when the ASAD counter spell that nuked ur opponent got removed from the sword. Yes, about a decade later I still remember keystrokes, I had issues.
i remember being 10 and having a teacher, writing down the most ridiculous samurai moves in the default notepad. i joined the ravager group , got the shirts from it, but that guy eventually got off roblox and when he would get on he ignored me
thats the thing.. why would you spend that much time in blox fruits JUST to get to the fun parts if your actually gonna do that though maybe use 1 or 2 codes BUT THATS BESIDES THE POINT
@@gladisjoseph6646 it's like rat chasing a mouse trap. When I was younger I fell for it and farmed up to like 2500. You chase the next broken overpowered thing mindlessly Now I just exploited whatever the hell I want, until krnl shut down so I quit
As someone who has been playing Black Magic since 2010, it was really sad to see it fall from popularity. It singlehanded inspired me to get into Roblox game development and I still follow the devs to this day on their new projects. Black Magic will always hold a place in my heart as that one game I got infinite comboed to death by 50 people using oversized pickaxes.. Edit: To add on to this, me and my best irl friend love Black Magic and bonded immensely over trying to find out the funniest combo with berzerker or using obscure classes against each other. The community around the game was pretty rough, but when you find that one server full of people who just want to mess around, it was like a whole different game filled with amazing and fun people. While I’m still really sad it has fallen out of its old glory, it will always have a place in my heart for the amazing lore, the fundamental aspect of combining multiple creators in one big game and the friendships I made through it. It really was. A Black Magic
While I wasn't really around for Black Magic (I played Roblox but not BM), I was around for A Bizarre Day and Project JoJo and when those games were alive, it sounds a lot like what you experienced, a blast when you had a server when you had people who just wanted to screw around. RIP Black Magic, it had an effect on my childhood undoubtedly, being a major inspiration to many of the games I remember fondly.
BM1 is a huge part of the reason I'm part of the competitive FGC as an adult. The nostalgia I have for playing this cannot be understated-although I stuck to the tamer side of keystrokes for most of my playtime in AoS and Kunomai, this game stuck with me in a way I can't describe. Being one of the first people to find new things like the AoS+wings healthbug and being able to watch the game's rare updates to movesets and characters is a treasure, and I'm glad I got to witness a good portion of its heyday. BM1 may not be a perfect game or the best game, but it's full of fond memories and a community I feel I'll never quite leave. Rest in peace.
im completely new to this black magic stuff but throughout this video I thought: this would be the perfect gateway into the FGC with actual well-developed fighters.
A hundred percent, the same. BM got me BBCF and GGXrd/GGACR, then KoF, then a few more. Wouldn't be where I am now without that. Got to the point that I even was able to name most of the FGC references in the keystrokes despite never maining keystrokes.
i remember playing black magic when i was in 6TH GRADE. being a college student now, knowing it’s been that long, it sucks that i can’t experience and enjoy it as i did anymore. this game meant a lot to me as a kid and i’m glad it’s getting this recognition❤
As someone who's at least been around to see Black Magic in its final 2 to 3-ish years and mainly being a somewhat known BM2 player with basically no experience with keystroke classes, thanks for documenting all of this. Of all the Script Fighters Roblox had to offer, this is probably by far the most iconic one. Who knows, maybe someone will bring this game, this world, to its unrealized potential. Maybe I can gain the motivation to go back to the game and find a Keystroke class that works for me. (Can't say I'm too confident though, lol)
God I remember the days of this game... Doing class unlocks, trying to wrap my head around keystrokes (ravager was my personal fav), and just hanging out with people and exploring the maps... Good memories, and at least it has been preserved now so one can visit for nostalgia's sake. The best of the numerous class based arena fighters the site had back in the day.
@@Seinsmellednah, the same things that happens in black magic happens in yba, unbalanced characters, experienced players beating the shit of you, the game will eventually die if it keeps this way
I've been playing roblox since 2016, and games like Script Skirmish, Black Magic and STRIFE! were pretty much my childhood this video was extremely nostalgic and means a lot to me
OH MY GOD SCRIPT SKIRMIISHHH i met an old friend on script skirmish (i think) unfortunately, i lost contact with them after their roblox account got hacked remember to establish off-platform communication with people so that doesn't happen..
Strife was one of the first games I got my friend into back in 2016. Funnily enough, the person who got me into roblox a few years earlier also introduced me to it.
Forgot to shout out Vertoxico for providing clips, huge thanks to him and just being a cool guy, you can see him as the lil purple avatar in the video 👍
fr this was nice to look at and follow. It was kinda like looking into a time capsule for us older players. I think it’s insane to think about how this game fell off as I had started playing in 2012 and still I talk to people from back then and still interact with the community which is just an insane thought.
The thing that prolongs games is that they aren’t mastered. This is the concept that I liked. A game so utterly unique and difficult that playing it makes you seem like a prodigy.
Someone actually did a video on Black Magic (1). That's crazy! And I'm in two spots... As someone who was around for ~80% of it's history as a moderator, admin, and even just a normal player at the start, this video does tickle my heart. This video is probably one of the best ways to explain the evolution and downfall of BM1, which I do agree! The player base has always fluctuated, but the concept was always there, with all the little things bringing people back, be the keystrokes or even just hanging out with their friends. But even though its been years, the concept is still loved and the game has influenced many. When BM flourished during its time, the community as a whole was a blazing wildfire. Many groups were made just for the appreciation of certain classes, and there were community-led leaderboards for who were at the top of their league for the favorites they loved to play. During it's peak, there were many tournaments hosted, with a variety of prizes to be taken. All the factions were mostly community-led, but were definitely community-powered. Many ideas were thrown around, and community-made maps and classes also existed, but many sadly never saw the light. And as a small fun fact, a lot of this existed before Discord was even a thing. Lots of communications outside of ROBLOX were through Skype or the group wall. What a time. I remember the times when I was mod/admin during the OG Black Magic days. Besides banning those who'd break the rules and other management, I'd make things fun as much as I could for the servers I hung around in. Soup store on the side of Silent Town, building random buildings out of bridges, having parties in Condemned Town, cleaning the floor with definitely no other intent, drawing people I saw around the place... I loved the community that would like the sprinkles of fun I provided when I could, and I continue to cherish the time I had with them. I hope that the experiences people had with me and everyone else, from the team and the rest of the community from back then, became a memory that people remembered. Despite all this, all good things must come to an end. Shoutout to those who tried to spark the flame once again with BM1, but everyone else had moved on to other things in their lives, and newer players would always feel the outdatedness of BM1. Even though BM1 has basically come to an end, I still talk to the friends and acquaintances I've made along the way. I hope others who were active in the community back in the day managed to get some friendships out of it, or at least have inspired those in some way. I'm unsure if there will ever be a game with such a similar concept in the near future, but the drive is there. Have a great day, whoever you are! 💜
the very first black magic was an unique experience because there was really nothing much unfair except for berserker 1 shot combos, you didn't have to play sweaty keystroke classes to get kills either, and the gamepasses weren't pay to win either. it's a classic and nostalgic game and no one returns to it because it's not the same love as from 2012-2014
LETS GOOO IT DROPPED Edit: just finished the video, honestly one of the best documentaries/video essays I've seen. It did an amazing job at explaining bm1, the editing is outstanding, and the video was very interesting and entertaining. Thank you and everyone else who contributed to this video for making it.
This is by far one of the best docummentaries I've ever seen. also easily one of the best videos on a roblox game recently. All from the video, from the memes, the pacing, the script and storytelling. It truly makes up for the 27 minutes. And there are no parts where you feel a dead end or where it becomes boring. TRuly a masterpiece Personally I've never played Black Magic, and probably will give it a try later. But as for now, I can tell that by the little details and screenshots of all the events you really cared a lot about this game. And not only you, but also the whole community that came with it (not including toxic people cuz they toxic >:P) But I digress, great video, probably great game and a new suscriber
Learning how to do SSAADDQ or some random ass shit on Enma when I was like 10 years old was the greatest thing that has ever happened to me, I had so much connection to Black Magic and even met Qaeo a few times when I was super young, it's sad to see this video years later after having dropped all influence from any BM (or really fighting game) for so long in my life, and to see how far it's fallen. Thank you for making this video, it triggered a nice nostalgia trip.
So I've been in and out of the community for a good while, one of the things Nylium has expressed before, is that maintenance of the game is abhorrent. Alot of the classes in BMU require a Filter Enabled Conversion script to be functional, which spawned alot of these "Techs". Additionally because of this, there was always something new to fix when the game updated, and I think that gets exhausting. With how ruthless the community is regarding changes and balancing it's a wonder Nazo lasted as long as he did.
This was a good watch. I was an old developer and stopped making classes for Black Magic to develop Strife!, but it's great to see this game being put on the spotlight. I was never into keystroke classes cause my young teenager brain couldn't comprehend making quick inputs like those back then and I wanted to make more simpler classes for people like me who weren't into those as well. Loved seeing how much this game has inspired other people and the fighting game genre on Roblox.
It's Tsiar, hope ur doing great wherever you are Bob, it was a great 5 years, I'm so glad helpful and understanding people like you helped me to join and be a part of a faction (purity), make friends, enemies and rivals, understand the lore of the game, understand the classes and just let me escape every day after school while I was growing up. I'll never forget my days with Purity, and Subsequently with my bros. in Power, and then Omicron until it was disbanded.
Im so sad that I never found black magic till now. I really hope some crazy person comes by and makes a keystroke based 3d arena character fighter with modern graphics
Yoo you mentioned "Strife!"? I had played that game back then (didn't know of Black Magic though unfortunately) and remembered the exploiters there too as you spoke about them. From what I'm seeing, it was similar to BM so I'm just kinda happy to see others know about the game too. Though I didn't know of the original Black Magic back then, I was there in BM2 for the open test phase where the only class was Assailant...
This game, as well as Smash bros Brawl, were the catalysts that ignited my competitive drive in my childhood. While both will be missed, the fundamental passion and unyielding will to try, to optimize, and to win that they instilled in me will only burn out when my life does. Thank you, Saz, for creating the 4 most beautifully unhinged movesets imaginable.
I remember playing Black Magic all the time when I was young. I played it so much that I was an insanely good Berserker. It's sad to see the game fall though as it was a childhood favorite of mine.
For some reason and for a very long time "Enma U" kept popping into my thoughts, but couldn't remember where it's from. Thanks to complete random chance, this video popped into my recommended, unlocking a whole chain of childhood memories.
Props to you for making such a good video essay on a dead game that doesn’t really guarantee you views so that really shows that you actually care about the topic rather than trying to get some quick money.
You just unlocked a childhood memory. I had so much fun learning ravager n sending everyone flying, people running around random killing n seeing the newbies mald in chat. It was a chaotic playground i'd spend hours in having fun with the jank roblox physics. Thank you, this video is such a refreshing watch.
The thing that killed black magic was the fact it was a Roblox game. Not just because Roblox, but because of Roblox servers. The game was hosted on a server that was quite literally not designed for it, which resulted in the game playing how it did. This is how a LOT of technical arena fighters die on Roblox. Not through any fault of the devs, but the fault of Roblox's netcode. At the very least, that's my experience.
Also no way to create custom made physics, it will always run on roblox default physics which is limited and set in stone. For example if you want to go fast, then you always have to deal with the damn acceleration that was forcefully added on roblox back in 2013. or if you hit something while going fast, you just fling outside the map for some reason.
Played BM2 for a while since I was a Fighting game guy and heard abour it from friends. This video had me nostalgic about something I didn’t touch. Like playing old Melty Blood with friends nostalgic. Maybe one day a true spiritual successor will spawn up. Great video bro!
literally in the exact same boat as you man. Sorta wish I would've known about BM1 when it was more popular so I could've learned with the community, but oh well. BM2 was fun for the ~month or 2 I played it
I noticed that most roblox fighting game communities are the WORST thing and hold back the potential of a game, devs spend too much time trying to appeal to a crowd that will always bite the hand that feeds.
I remember there was one keystroke class that was easy to use. I believe it was called Divinity. It had 2 moves, you could switch through, one being a large shield and the other being a spear. It was easy because it didn't have a lot of moves and it was more forgiving on the timing of the keystrokes. I don't know why it was removed, but I remember someone telling me that it got removed because it was "Too easy of a keystroke." Which doesn't make sense because compared to the other keystrokes, it couldn't stun lock you. Plus, it didn't do a lot of damage.
Talking about Black Magic as a whole... There's one Class I like in Black Magic Unleashed: Whaler. Which essentially played like *Ahab* and *Pequod Captain Ishmael* from the Project Moon game "Limbus Company", with a couple of move from Pequod Ishmael herself... Three of its main moves, "*“To Me!”*", "*“Pursue them to the End!”*", and "Harpoon of Obsession" literally being exactly almost the exact same from the original. The link of the three moves: ua-cam.com/video/kIxBIjzGWwg/v-deo.htmlsi=FbnrZjEDsBj32-VW It's a Hybrid Class with only a few Keystroke moves, and a mechanic which changes moves, or gives them follow-up hits if turned on. I played it and accepted every loss, because it's a class I liked, and it actually felt balanced. If I lost, it was MY fault. And another thing I cared, to be honest... *...is that I was a part of the Pequod.*
Jeez this is bringing back memories, used to play this game since around 2015 right up until the filtering enabled update on roblox. Even got banned from the main discord server because one of the discord admins gave everyone admin role and I posted in the announcements tab. Kind of a shame we'll probably never get something like this again, both with all the roblox updates discouraging experimentation with game design and fighting games being such a niche genre on the platform.
I never really got into BM. Only thing I remember is that I tried one keystroke class and noped tf out of there. Years later, I kinda want to try to have a moderate amount of skills in BM. Sadly it died, hard.
Black Magic is a game I'll remember for a long time, with how many memories I've made back in my early days on roblox, thank you for making this video.
As someone who joined the Black Magic community very later on when I discovered Black Magic II in early 2022, the whole state and history of BM1 has always felt mysterious to me. Almost everyone who plays BM2 and is active on the Discord server are people who all know each other and were players of BM1 for a long time, contributing to many of the events of BM1's history that are discussed in this video. However, as an outlier, I didnt't exactly feel a connection to this community, yet I still held curiosity for its past. The history of this game and its playerbase eluded me for a while, but recently, and especially thanks to this video, I can finally begin to see the bigger picture of this fun little game I thought looked cool back in 2022. It feels like uncovering an ancient civilization that lived beneath me all along. Nice video, well done.
As a long time fighting game player, that started on a keyboard, and made a custom hitbox box based off a keyboard. I can say i would be a god at this game (1200+ hrs on fgs invested)
Yeah probably god at keystroke classes, but there is tons of classes that doesn’t use keystrokes, some of them is just spraying tons of ranged damage from a distance that can easily melt keystroke classes before the keystroke class gets to them.
I've been trying to remember this game recently, ever since I was playing another newer fighting game with a friend. But I could never remember the name, only a few of the classes. Thanks for talking about this game, I'll definitely check it out later whenever I can!
as a person who loved black magic before (and even helped Nyl in some maps and stuff), it's a tragedy that it ended up this way but it's all old things it was awesome for the time and it's funny that i'm still on the Brawler image fuck yeah
I feel like fighting games should always include a tutorial that teaches the players a simple combo or two for their class just so they can play the game with some knowledge
I feel so terribly hurt and sad seeing my old favorite games just fading away like this, especially since Black Magic was basically my first ever game on Roblox along with Kingdom Life, Roblox High School, Arcane Adventures and Polyguns. I guess some things just aren't meant to be, yet, it feels so terribly bad to be in this time, in the future, where they no longer are..
Man there was so much memories of this game honestly, Black Magic 2 was introduced and it was much much more unique than BM1, happy to see Black Magic getting love
I just want you to know I have been trying to remember the game Srife! that you showed at 15:01, and I decided to just settle for the game that you covered and I end up rewatching and clicking a random time but found it. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I never played black magic back then but i immediately recognized alot of classes because every rc7 user under the sun would use them in games back in the golden age of roblox exploiting
Thank you for this video. I've played BM1 since 2010 as a guest. It's a game dear to my heart, and I have always wished someone would make a video detailing its significance, lest it be forgotten. For you to have taken on such a daunting challenge - the game has an incredibly long history - I am beyond amazed and charmed. This video must've been no easy task. Thank you.
I never heard about black magic and I just randomly found this video, and the only thing I have to say is that this video doesn't have any reasons to be SO WELL MADE, CONGRATULATION FOR THE VIDEO, this is the type of video i want to watch. Said so I am gonna try the game, you peeked my interest
played the old bm for a pretty long time and used to be super active in the community of this game. met a lot of cool people but unfortunately the community overall was pretty bad, a groomer popping up every week isnt really an understatement lmao. i appreciate this video as a proper send off for a game i used to put a ton of hours into (even though im more glad its dead at this point), and for making keystrokes look way cooler than i ever thought they were lmao. nazo was also the one who eventually got me into scripting/coding so i owe him a lot for that, hope hes doing alright now and whatever happened with the girl isnt as bad as it sounds.
Used to play black magic after school and just play random characters, it was so fun. I loved the giant roster so much, it was genuinely just mindless fun.
I never heard of black magic until i saw this video but i think you made a really good video and you also surprised me with the passion you put in the making of this video. Keep it up like that, you made me enjoy all the video to start to end. I cant even describe how good this video is 10/10 video, Keep it up like that.
Congrats on the documentary on this game bruh, I'm surprised somebody put this despite its state right now. As a kid (moron) who used to play this game since 2014-2015 ish the lore, drama (including me) and now in his 20s living in my parents basement its been a ride in terms of being in the community, beefing with everyone then going back to play berz, losing and winning and rinse and repeat. In terms of that one point about balancing it is the most true statement with that and no matter how much the devs put time and effort to add/ nerf classes people will complain no matter what, either if the "newgens" say its too op/weak or the "old(fartassgens)" saying its this or that. Its just too much of what the game has to offer with so many classes with way too many mechanics that made it too chaotic (especially keystrokes since they obvs are on top) that balancing it would just be impossible. That and many dramas in every single generation of bm (qaeo, laricc espec on that dude, and nyl) with the usual toxicity to the ped allegations is the killers heel to black magic in general. I do miss the game as much I also want the game to just rot and kinda be on lost media cus with all the drama, complaints and such, had many fun times playing berz and the keystroke classes and I hope that concept still moves on to another game that eventually its not as chaotic as bm and obviously there is still gonna be drama and all that shit no matter what but it should be much more stable and more welcoming to newcomers because in order to even be decent in bm you have to get a phd in 1 keystroke class, figure out all the tech and some hidden ones and then and only then you are considered decent lmao.
Me with my berzerker’s sdq, sax, and asdf for years. I remember doing the hard combo for the first time and I was so proud, thanks for unlocking this memory.
man i remember so much of my time spent on this game as a kid. from playing destroyer when I found it on my mom's iPad to being a void walker in corruption and ranking up in the ravager and samurai groups it's nice to see that even though it's gone by now, a video like this is still documenting the chaotic fun that black magic 1 was. by no means was it an amazing game, but it was fun to chat and fight - and while I wouldnt play it anymore, it was still fun while it lasted. even when I recognized voidexus in another game after all these years from bm, he said "that's unfortunate". bm had a rough downfall, but it was fun while it lasted. most bm players then went on to cataclysmic clash until that fell apart too. shoutout to voiddrive for showing me neat ravager tricks, had a lotta fun making combos with that.
As an og player, whose first fighting game besides sfoth, it was a fresh new air for me to play something completely different, and new things to experience especially with the keystroke classes, the memories of this game will forever be with me, thank you for making this video as this game has a special place in my heart, I just hope black magic can get back into it's old ways...
i played this game, a long time ago when i was just a normal kid i didnt play it much, i played for a couple of minutes with cybervirt to play the among us theme and annoy people and that was it timeskip forward and i started animating just for fun, around my mid tier animator days i came back and mained the fuck out of superior and played everyday for a while but now ive grown a lot, and i am always absolutely pumped to do the flashiest fighting projects and honestly seeing this video makes me realize how the childish fantasy of over the top and awesome bullshit was utilized *so* fuckin much this video was almost enthralling to me, and you did a great job ^^
I came across this video while trying to find a video on black magic lore because it was getting tiring trying to peice it together through the wiki. As someone who's never connected to what actually what went on. Thanks for telling me what led to the downfall. It really cleaned up a bunch of stuff
out of tons of old dead roblox games, black magic probably has one of the biggest histories because of how it had many ups and downs and althought i never liked fighting keystrokes, i cannot deny that the combos looked cool and i hope one day someone makes a game with the same style i did however play bm2 alot but its just completely diffrent and has the normal hitstun combos combat where you minmax combo damage and theres not much tech to it
Black Magic was pretty much one of the games that shaped who I am today. It’s a big part of why I love Roblox in general. I still remember being the #1 ranked Spy…
I started playing the original release Black Magic in early 2010. Due to the economic recession and housing crisis at the time and untimely events I was briefly homeless, so one way I killed time and stress was through Roblox. I was 10 and found the game interesting but moved on and the following few years finally dug my nails in as I understood more coherently what the game was about. In 2012 I met the closest friend I've ever had through that game, a bit over a year later I came across him in a private 2v2 Source game server, when I recognized his name we took off as great internet friends with a lot in common, especially with the unique struggles at the time. The past few years recently is when I became bewildered upon realizing how unreal and microscopic of a chance I had to had come across him that day. He tragically passed away in the summer of 2022 in a motorcycle accident. As a 22 year old I get serious whiplash taking in the fact he's passed away when he was such a free spirit and difficult to catch up to person--I genuinely forget that he's unfortunately not around time to time. Especially considering what a cultural landmark Black Magic is to me and a lot of people, there's an association and avatar of a time that the world has moved on from. He's also had friendships flourish from Black Magic, and even met one or two kids back in the day who happened to be into that game as I have. The years between 2014 and 2020 were elusive due to how much character and personality we both cultivated as teenagers, silently learning from each other while taking separate paths of experience. Reaching 2020 and then-on into 2022 we were both through the door to adulthood. There was so much companionship between us through just under a decade long friendship that the freedom of adulthood put into perspective how much agency we have in life. Only now I realize with everything that's been said and done that we've kept an intensely strong memory and admiration of each other, despite any circumstance. I logged on this morning thinking about Black Magic out of nowhere and decided to play, discovering 40 players were online. I've played some of the rerelease the past few years but admittedly very little, and maybe a half dozen times with my friend. There was a time in 2012 when we were both adept at the keystroke classes and participated in some of the community tourneys and drama. Someone let me know from the server this morning about this video which is how I got here. I won't name my friend since privacy is rare these days. Thanks for putting in so much effort to detail a profound and esoteric corner of the internet that attracts an uncanny community with abstract degrees of separation from each other.
Black magic was my first combat game on roblox. It was so fun and the classed were awesome (head hunter main) but learning combos with besrker and gravedigger was so hard but satisfying. Whoever played this your a legend.
great video man. long time player, i'm glad this video is acting as a beacon for revival. i've been seeing tons of new players. (jogarmaxm here btw ;) )
words cant even describe how much i love seeing someone dig up an old game and make an entire documentary about it, dedicating their time for a game that we indeed never deserved. Despite being a newgen and starting from bm2 i can see how deep it can impact the lore, the amount of time and the amount of passion everyone put for this game. It's quite sad it had to die.
I never played this game, but seeing the footage and everything about black magic makes me realize if I had found it in it's hayday I i would have played it far too much. Thank you so much for this video, without it I would have never discovered such a beautiful game and concept.
I really love this type of content talking about really good and unique games in Roblox that died and most ppl don’t know, you should do more videos about other games and their stories behind them and why they never came back, it would be awesome
Im so happy this was finally released. It's a huge honor of mine to of been apart of this community from 2015-present, competing with others, even when I was so young. It was an experience that I have never been able to re-create. Samurai back in the day was the only thing I played, and it was so fucking fun.
I don't know who you are, why you where encouraged to make this video, but i respect the living hell out of you, i remember when unleashed classes got released, bosses, i remember when venta and enigma where the ONLY BOSSES. When roblox added filter enabled perm, and you couldn't turn it off, unfortunately alot of the black magic classes in the orignal game highly depended on the client side to communicate through the script and local script side insted of depending on instantances in the workspace. When roblox added the update it sadly ruined alot of the classes forcing a remake. My heart is still out to comett55, coolallball, qaeo, EnsembIe, i am missing a few but those where the OG's when i came around, i wish it would have lasted longer.
only thing i remember about black magic is hopping on it for 2 seconds as a kid, getting cooked, and then proceeding to leave to never look back again
Damn, I played the game even with 300 ping, honestly the biggest issue of literally every realtime combat roblox game for me is the terrible ping
same i got whooped then I got mad cause nobody would tell me how to play 😭
i remember getting checked so god damn hard dark magic players are like
"Next step, discombobulate."
"neck broken, discombobulate."
"colon fractured discombobulate."
"target winded discombobulate."
"discombobulated, discombobulate."
Yeah.
Discombobulate.
Black magic was the first game that ever introduced me to active input, input delay, ping and such and I was like 13/14 sweating my butt off tryna use the intricate characters having a fight of my life with the sweats as they proceed invert my Roblox character (skill issued)
proceed to invert my Roblox character is crazy 😭
Last part LMAOOOO
i was destroying my finger using berserker and ace of spade, played it every day so frequent that my finger skin started to get ripped. best game ever imo still misses the classic bm

@@vertoxico8943 Thx. I have terrible memory, and basically forget things I see 10 minutes before lol, so I completely forgot.
Thirteen different revival spells😭😭
ok watching the video i agree
"Rest in Piss"
This might be the rawest comment of all time.
True.
Good times.
can you name some games you play now that are similar ?
@@IsoMarley8Honestly I meant mainly outside of roblox, these types of fighting games got me into the actual fighting game community-type games. Like Guilty Gear and even the newest Street Fighter (played a little Tekken 8 too, its fun) and it's a really cool thriving place for people that enjoy it. If you've ever played Berserker in BM, then learning combo strings in actual fighting games is like Berserker's older brother, it's way more fun than it seems. But ya know, only the people that neurodivergently focused on BM back then like me talks about stuff like this hahahaha
@@IsoMarley8For roblox though, Combat Warriors, HOURS, and The Strongest Battlegrounds come close to the classic BM classes feel.
No shot, you just unlocked half my childhood memory, and I'm horrified that I recognize half the players in your footage.

HE SAID IT, HE SAID THE GAME’S NAME!
But all in seriousness it truly was…
While I wasn't really around for Black Magic (I played Roblox but not BM), I was around for A Bizarre Day and Project JoJo and when those games were alive, it sounds a lot like what you experienced, a blast when you had a server when you had people who just wanted to screw around.
Same, BM1 got me into BlazBlue and Guilty Gear, and from there I got into DBFZ and spent a little bit in my local scene.
im completely new to this black magic stuff but throughout this video I thought: this would be the perfect gateway into the FGC with actual well-developed fighters.
A hundred percent, the same. BM got me BBCF and GGXrd/GGACR, then KoF, then a few more. Wouldn't be where I am now without that. Got to the point that I even was able to name most of the FGC references in the keystrokes despite never maining keystrokes.
I don't get it, this game didn't really impact anyone that far.
@@CassNoko i'm. Literally talking about my own experiences. All of us are. Did you live those for us?
i remember playing black magic when i was in 6TH GRADE. being a college student now, knowing it’s been that long, it sucks that i can’t experience and enjoy it as i did anymore. this game meant a lot to me as a kid and i’m glad it’s getting this recognition❤
Got damn. rs
(Can't say I'm too confident though, lol)

this video was extremely nostalgic and means a lot to me

i met an old friend on script skirmish (i think)
unfortunately, i lost contact with them after their roblox account got hacked
remember to establish off-platform communication with people so that doesn't happen..
HOLY SHIT STRIFE I FORGOT ABOUT THAT GAME
Strife was one of the first games I got my friend into back in 2016. Funnily enough, the person who got me into roblox a few years earlier also introduced me to it.

fr this was nice to look at and follow.

All from the video, from the memes, the pacing, the script and storytelling. It truly makes up for the 27 minutes. And there are no parts where you feel a dead end or where it becomes boring. TRuly a masterpiece
Personally I've never played Black Magic, and probably will give it a try later. But as for now, I can tell that by the little details and screenshots of all the events you really cared a lot about this game.

I used to play this game so much and be toxic on it that I still have videos of it on my channel from when I was a kid dude... Awesome video
Great video bro!
melty blood sure is a hidden gem not many people know about, i'm surprised to hear about it here
melty blood is the bomb
literally in the exact same boat as you man.
After all these years, I've finally come to understand the Black Magic
I remember there was one keystroke class that was easy to use.
I believe it was called Divinity. It had 2 moves, you could switch through, one being a large shield and the other being a spear.
It was easy because it didn't have a lot of moves and it was more forgiving on the timing of the keystrokes.
I don't know why it was removed, but I remember someone telling me that it got removed because it was "Too easy of a keystroke."
Which doesn't make sense because compared to the other keystrokes, it couldn't stun lock you.
The link of the three moves: ua-cam.com/video/kIxBIjzGWwg/v-deo.htmlsi=FbnrZjEDsBj32-VW
It's a Hybrid Class with only a few Keystroke moves, and a mechanic which changes moves, or gives them follow-up hits if turned on.

I feel like fighting games should always include a tutorial that teaches the players a simple combo or two for their class just so they can play the game with some knowledge
unfortunately black magic has and never will have a tutorial mark my words, but my yt can kinda fill that gap
@@bvr_dsr black magic 2 had a tutorial but we arent tlking about that
never mind nylium decided to make a tutorial and seems to be making good progress 😭he locked in, something to look forward to
@@bvr_dsri think he should give up on bm1 and make a completely new game but with the same concept 😝
this aged poorly@@bvr_dsr
I feel so terribly hurt and sad seeing my old favorite games just fading away like this, especially since Black Magic was basically my first ever game on Roblox along with Kingdom Life, Roblox High School, Arcane Adventures and Polyguns.
I guess some things just aren't meant to be, yet, it feels so terribly bad to be in this time, in the future, where they no longer are..
black magic unlimited:
Man there was so much memories of this game honestly,
Black Magic 2 was introduced and it was much much more unique than BM1, happy to see Black Magic getting love
I just want you to know I have been trying to remember the game Srife! that you showed at 15:01, and I decided to just settle for the game that you covered and I end up rewatching and clicking a random time but found it. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Imagine a elden ring boss rush with keystroke tech and combat system with team boss fights.
I never played black magic back then but i immediately recognized alot of classes because every rc7 user under the sun would use them in games back in the golden age of roblox exploiting
Honestly I thought the channel had more subs. Really tells a cool story and convinced me to at least try the game
Thank you.
goated music choices
shut up
I never heard about black magic and I just randomly found this video, and the only thing I have to say is that this video doesn't have any reasons to be SO WELL MADE, CONGRATULATION FOR THE VIDEO, this is the type of video i want to watch.
The big claws guy is the most epic character ive seen ever since i saw it years ago
I never heard of black magic until i saw this video but i think you made a really good video and you also surprised me with the passion you put in the making of this video. Keep it up like that, you made me enjoy all the video to start to end. I cant even describe how good this video is 10/10 video, Keep it up like that.
Black Magic UNLEASHED it got updated today.
incredibly well made video and deserves millions of views. video game history runs so deep and deserves to be highlighted!
The community was so weird 80% of people active in general chat ended up being a pedo or did some weird kinky shit and got banned
Me with my berzerker’s sdq, sax, and asdf for years. I remember doing the hard combo for the first time and I was so proud, thanks for unlocking this memory.
I've only played Black Magic 2 and even after I've stopped playing Roblox, it's still one of my most favorite game. I still know most of the combo
I never heard about keystroke classes. Now I wish I did, I always wanted to see a fighting game that gave you this many opportunities to attack...
This truly was our black magic 2 after all
man i remember so much of my time spent on this game as a kid. from playing destroyer when I found it on my mom's iPad to being a void walker in corruption and ranking up in the ravager and samurai groups
it's nice to see that even though it's gone by now, a video like this is still documenting the chaotic fun that black magic 1 was. by no means was it an amazing game, but it was fun to chat and fight - and while I wouldnt play it anymore, it was still fun while it lasted. even when I recognized voidexus in another game after all these years from bm, he said "that's unfortunate". bm had a rough downfall, but it was fun while it lasted. most bm players then went on to cataclysmic clash until that fell apart too.
shoutout to voiddrive for showing me neat ravager tricks, had a lotta fun making combos with that.
Bruh I LOVED strife. I remember waiting in 8th grade for that rumored Strife remake. But now, I'm in college, and it seems it never came..
wow never heard of this game but the story is very intresting it reminds me of my adventure with old AUT
Also it’s so crazy this almost has 300K, that’s insane
What's sfoth
i played this game, a long time ago when i was just a normal kid
i didnt play it much, i played for a couple of minutes with cybervirt to play the among us theme and annoy people and that was it
timeskip forward and i started animating just for fun, around my mid tier animator days i came back and mained the fuck out of superior and played everyday for a while
but now ive grown a lot, and i am always absolutely pumped to do the flashiest fighting projects and honestly seeing this video makes me realize how the childish fantasy of over the top and awesome bullshit was utilized *so* fuckin much
this video was almost enthralling to me, and you did a great job ^^
Love your animations
I came across this video while trying to find a video on black magic lore because it was getting tiring trying to peice it together through the wiki. As someone who's never connected to what actually what went on. Thanks for telling me what led to the downfall. It really cleaned up a bunch of stuff
out of tons of old dead roblox games, black magic probably has one of the biggest histories because of how it had many ups and downs and althought i never liked fighting keystrokes, i cannot deny that the combos looked cool and i hope one day someone makes a game with the same style
i did however play bm2 alot but its just completely diffrent and has the normal hitstun combos combat where you minmax combo damage and theres not much tech to it
Man I think there's another one that's similar but it's probably dead now
bm2 is a much more traditional fighting game that isnt as out there as the original
Black Magic was pretty much one of the games that shaped who I am today. It’s a big part of why I love Roblox in general.
I still remember being the #1 ranked Spy…
fire video doc on BM
old leaderboard samurai main and i quit for the reason mentioned after samurai got gutted
@@josephnegm LordOppa a familiar name?
of course it is, the sam tech god

Thanks for putting in so much effort to detail a profound and esoteric corner of the internet that attracts an uncanny community with abstract degrees of separation from each other.
this is like gunz for roblox
Black magic was my first combat game on roblox. It was so fun and the classed were awesome (head hunter main) but learning combos with besrker and gravedigger was so hard but satisfying. Whoever played this your a legend.
in conclusion the community and keystrokes doesnt help making the game better
great video man. long time player, i'm glad this video is acting as a beacon for revival. i've been seeing tons of new players.
Dark Energy is a former competitor to Black Magic, I think you should go look into it, that game was amazing
He posted about Unleashed and not Two, Genesis, 2016 release, or 2009 release!!! (I've only been 20 seconds in the video)
I never played this game, but seeing the footage and everything about black magic makes me realize if I had found it in it's hayday I i would have played it far too much.
Thank you so much for this video, without it I would have never discovered such a beautiful game and concept.
Oh fuck
I never heard of this game yet its actually cool ngl even though i never played it lol
I really love this type of content talking about really good and unique games in Roblox that died and most ppl don’t know, you should do more videos about other games and their stories behind them and why they never came back, it would be awesome
uhhh what’s black magic?
Watch the video
It was something beautiful for its time
magic thats black
The memories are crazy, I used to main nethershade samurai lmao
0:12 WHY DO U HAVE THE SAME MAC AND SAME PROTECTING THING AS MEEEE
Im so happy this was finally released. It's a huge honor of mine to of been apart of this community from 2015-present, competing with others, even when I was so young. It was an experience that I have never been able to re-create. Samurai back in the day was the only thing I played, and it was so fucking fun.
Am I blind or is that mahoraga in 1:35
I don't know who you are, why you where encouraged to make this video, but i respect the living hell out of you, i remember when unleashed classes got released, bosses, i remember when venta and enigma where the ONLY BOSSES.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Amen
MY CHILDHOOD. i remember just flying around for fun for countless hours
What about black magic II? Is it worth playing?
last time I played, I did the tutorial, picked a class and still had no idea how to do any attacks on that class. Tutorial just feels bad.
bm2 is a way more traditional fighting game thats not as out there as bm1, i still love playing it though, its well balanced with fun mechanics
